Missy was only 14 when her dad died, you can see the change in her, how DEEPLY it hurt her and that could’ve set her off the wrong path for a little while, it’s completely plausible that she was no help to Georgie while he was trying to keep things together, no one is the same person they always were as a child
Especially since out of all of them she arguably had the greater relationship with him, before George sr died she was alread partying and rebelling, imagine what she would do after the fact
I'm fine with the idea Sheldon was a kid who didn't understand his parents as much as they might not have understood him. And that he misinterpreted things he saw, especially when he only saw pieces. It helps humanize him &, to me, makes him even more likeable. What kid doesn't do that?
That Sheldon didn't understand a social situation (his parents' having sex) and then he took it well out of proportion absolutely fits with his character both in YS and in TBBT. I think that sort of retcon is funny and surprising (as a fan of both shows I was waiting to see how it would resolve, but it shouldn't have been predictable). The retcon also honours the canon and exclusive viewers of YS. Given his character arc, George cheating then would have made no sense at all. Also it makes sense that after reparing his relationship with Georgie at the end of TBBT (and presumably continuing to interact further), that would have given him time to refkect on his life - you have to remember that the "old Sheldon" parts of the YS finale take place many years after the end of TBBT.
I can't believe that fancam of Sheldon's dad one shotting a creep on his front porch has led me down a rabbit hole developing a genuine interest in giving this show a try, but god bless.
I like how Fraiser addressed issues in the continuity and retcons, in Cheers he said his dad is dead but he obviously isn't in Fraiser and the show gives the reason "Frasier had a fight with his dad and said he was dead"
Let’s not forget that the Big Bang theory in its early days didn’t even hold to its own continuity. Example in the first few episodes, Leonard mentions that he’s looking into getting a cat and tell Sheldon he will keep in mind Sheldon‘s cat allergies. Three seasons later after Sheldon broke up with Amy and was lonely, he adopts a group of cats and needs him after a bunch of scientists, what happened to Sheldon’s allergies?
Well yes. Retcon doesn't actually mean change. It just means having some sort of continuity that was added retroactively. It can change or enhance existing lore but it doesn't have to do either
I mean, to be fair, even Big Bang Theory’s canon didn’t always add up. I remember Sheldon said Leonard couldn’t have a pet since he was allergic but yet in a famous episode, he adopted several to cope with Amy’s breakup (one was named Zazzles)
On Georgie: you gloss over the times when he was less than kind to Sheldon, and we know (from both YS and TBBT Sheldon is very good at holding a grudge) - we also don't know exactly what happens between the end of YS and the start of TBBT, it can't have been complete radio-silence between the siblings. The new Georgie spinoff will hopefully fill in more of those gaps with their relationship falling apart. (The spinoff won't make any sense without at least some guest appearances from the wider family). But we also know that since Georgie and Mandy do get divorved there's bound to be some changes to his character. It would be stupid to think that the personality of a teenager would survive the decades of life experiences that Georgie has between YS and TBBT.
i see this a sheldon being a unreliable narrator as is from sheldon perspective for his memoir while the show sheldon home references are more to the truth
I know its a cop but I'm kinda glad they didn't go with George's cheating event. So many of the young Sheldon fans have not watched a single episode of Big Bang Theory, and it would have been a little drastic to some for George to do that.
not only that age in the Show itself Young Sheldon. He said that Georgy first marriage is at 19 when it was at 18. But overall I love that they retconed things I didn't see the family as a bad one to have Sheldon being like that and I didn't want them to suddenly go and change everything in the last season, so I am happy that George is not a cheater and that his mother while yea loves the Chruch always loved her children more unlike TBBT.
I gotta be honest you constantly say ‘the fans’ are upset with this or how something disappointed ‘the core audience’ but your opinions and viewpoints (which by the way are completely fair - everyone is entitled to their own interpretations) seem to be completely in the minority. Twitter Reddit the comments on your own RUclips videos and other RUclips videos seem to completely lean in the other direction. Also as far as the characters being so different from their future selves just kind of ignores a universal truth that people grow and change, sometimes drastically. And as people grow and change, their perceptions of their reality is what becomes real to them, as opposed to the actual reality of their history. Basically someone’s interpretation of events from their past become what shapes their lives; rather than the events themselves. And as an audience, we get an entirely different perspective because we see the events themselves, along with each characters interpretations of the events and their reactions to those experiences and reactions to their own individual interpretations, which gives us a clearer picture while also making it feel more human and true to life as this same thing happens in real life
I do somewhat disagree with the Georgie part. In The Big Bang theory claims he has two ex-wives and as much as I love Mandy and Georgie there are times even in s7 where they have issues in the relationship with them having very different opinions (Like wanting more kids, Mand changing her last name, etc) and now him having to be deal with a somehow even more religious Mary (look at how she turned out in TBBT) and a teenage Missy who is lashing out at everyone and of course is going to become very disrespectful as when it seemed her life was getting better, her dad dies and Georgie has to take over that role while Mary ignores her, and a daughter with a mother in law who doesn't like him, I could honestly see a divorce happening and him becoming a bit like his older self. I will say though with how much the big bang theory gave so little about his life and depending on how many seasons and thus canonical years we watch the characters go through, we could see him become an ass, his relationship with Mandy falling apart but the two being able to fix their issues.
Got to say.... i agree its a retcon, i thought it was a brilliant, thoughtful, insightful one that perfectly suited the theme of both shows... Very little from the original is contradicted, and sheldon not understanding what his family were doing is truly in keeping with the character
2 things 1 it’s Sheldon of course he got things wrong. Might have a mamatic memory but it still doesn’t make up for horrendous personal and people skills And 2 after gorges death they all go down hill. Gorgies hit the least. But the mom gos heavy religious. Grandma vary conservative, sister losses that fire. Gorgie had to become the man of two homes. While Sheldons well it’s Sheldon. He blames everyone but himself. Most of these people won’t heal for the next 20~30 years. You forgot the simple fact that Sheldon’s an idiot and theirs a big time gap between shows. People change
Something that a lot of people go eh at is how Sheldon talks about George in TBBT compared to YS- It kinda comes down to Mary, She got angry that George died and put that on Sheldon- Constantly shit talking him and only thinking of the bad things, causing him to grow up and think the same, Sheldon did the same and thought he was a lousy father- it was only when he saw the video of his dad coaching his team he saw a different side- and when he became a father himself his view on George flipped
6:20 I mean tbf does that not sound like Sheldon 😂, the dude even as an adult has no emotional maturity even after his “character growth” let alone as a child, it makes sense that as he retold his story and became a father he’d come to understand maybe it was him and not his dad
Yeah I agree and in universe Sheldon thought he was cheating not knowing his mom was in a costume role playing for George Sr after watching the scene I shook my head and just said wow he didn’t recognize his mom
This channel just showed up on my algorithm, so I'm new around here and not really sure what's going on or what tone is acceptable. That said, god, how I despise BBT. Never made it through an entire episode. Have only been subjected to it secondhand and found it painful to endure. That said, I was sort of forced to watch a few YS episodes this past week and... it's good. Really good. Shockingly good. Not sure how that happened.

Completely agree, it fit in well with his TBBT character, he was a child what was he supposed to think?
Sheldon dedicating his Valedictorian to Missy was so sweet
Yes❤
I always took it as sheldon was not a accurate narrator
which makes sense since he was a kid and already had struggles with social queues etc
I can't believe that fancam of Sheldon's dad one shotting a creep on his front porch has led me down a rabbit hole developing a genuine interest in giving this show a try, but god bless.

Meemaw in TBBT is like 15-20 years older than in YS.
I'm still waiting for the explanation of how he went from bow ties and button down shirts to novelty t-shirts on to of long sleeve shirts. 🙂
14:01 Both can be true at the same time. You think Missy was the same person after her father died and her twin brother went to college? Come on😂

"We still think Missy is the best Cooper sibling"
boy would I agree with you if not for the last episode or two.
Young Sheldon makes it clear that Sheldon got a few things wrong about his life growing up.
Lillian Hellman called it "pentimento."
