      After watching your videos for over three years, I am wondering if you have thought of how many head of cattle will the 150 acres going to support. Is it an advantage to having a rotation plan that will support more animals? I think you have the right idea but wonder if moving them every twelve hours will allow for a larger herd.

    Definitely don't want to be drinking when dealing with vegetation that grows taller than the tractor because the ground frequently gets too wet to mow. I want land. But i also want cattle, probably Dexter's. I'll have other things as well. Pretty much a homestead farm. I'm a practical man though and know i don't need shiny new equipment and the best of the best to get started. There's quite a bit you can accomplish with just an ATV. Plenty of attachments and such to get you started. You even cover that in a video with those two Honda's. Love watching your videos. I've gotten so many good ideas too.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  Год назад

      not sure why Dexters? I see another fella out here that speaks very highly of dexters....let me tell ya...take it to the cattle sale and you'll see your profits go down the dexter toilet my friend. We went angus because the market price is typically much higher. As for "shiny" equipment.....best to start with something nice, something reliable. I've had tractor mechanical issues with every used and old tractor I've ever bought...even the new John Deere ....ya need a good, reliable cab tractor and a second machine that's a backup and for other jobs around the property. Shiny and new doesn't mean much, but buying something that's not broken all the time is priceless....you've gotta rely on these machines for your work...and when they're down...its bad! Look at the parasitic resistance and health issues associated with the dexter breed closely before you decide. Take an afternoon and go to the cattle sale barn and look at prices....you'll be blown away!! Most folks don't have the market to sell direct to consumer right away...that's why we started with angus and are now bridging to south poll grass genetics. Beware the youtube farmer that's not telling it all.....just be weary of what you see on social media, I assure you are not seeing all the input costs like I'm sharing

    • @MissingLinkMTB
      @MissingLinkMTB Год назад

      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer I guess overall there's a lack of information out there on Dexter's then. I thought I did some good research but admittedly it seems like a "cult" of cows... perhaps with people loving them just for their size. I'm working with angus out here currently in Arizona and have zero issues with their size or anything else. Equipment wise, I've been a mechanic 30 years. I'd hope I could spot issues during inspection and I'm quite capable of working on them. I don't mean clunkers though, as that'll keep you busy with one breakdown to the next. My deployment's almost up here and I'll be back home soon though. (Deployed to AZ, but volunteering my free time at a local ranch with a horse rescue).

      I think it would totally destroy all of the soil structure and ruin all of the work we've done. Now...ripping the soil for water intrusion...that's another story!

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer

      moving the fence daily is labor intensive, we might move the fences 3 times a year, what you see other's doing on the web, moving fences all the time, pulling posts, rolling up wire and such is a monumental time sucker. Once you've got your paddock size set, why pull the fence? It takes me 10 mins twice a day v/s 2 hours....and we have to remember...the soil is soft when it's wet, but hard as a darn rock when it's dry.....we have to wait until the soil conditions are right to place step in posts. Time is our most valuable commodity....you see others on youtube taking up fences....that's because they don't have the extensive water system that I built....and they have helpers or "interns" which basically means underpaid farm hands lol

    Hey SRF, great to see how far your farm has come, you seem to be doing amazing as far as building the land and equipment out.
    I do find it unfortunate that you've pivoted 180 degrees from your previous point of pride being a "100% regenerative farmer", often bragging how your pastures hadn't seen any spray/fertilizer in 7 years etc. in your older videos. I don't know the reason you've decided to start using sprays (my first guess is financial compensation), but since you are now using them, and not just "livestock to heal the land", you should probably stop claiming to be a regenerative farmer, as that term is used to mean people who use only livestock and rotational grazing to improve their pastures. Sure, you're still doing rotational grazing, and you can lay claim to that, but i think you're giving the wrong impression of what regenerative farming is by using sprays to green up your pastures, and while i know that regenerative farming isn't a legally protected name, i think it would still be the ethical thing if you stop using the term since you do know you are not following the ethos.
    That being said, i do love your videos, i watch almost all of them and REALLY enjoy your channel, and you seem like a heck of a nice guy. Keep up the great work!

      SOIL AMENDMENTS MY FRIEND!! WE PUT ALL SORTS OF AMENDMENTS ON OUR LAND.....Respectfully...you probably should do a little more research before ya lay into me brother...I'm not a politician buddy...here's the rub ....super soil is not conventional fertilizer...it's microbes, beneficial microbes that occur naturally in the soil that help build tops soil, biomass and fix cabon. I think you're misunderstanding the difference between chemical petroleum based fertilizer and SOIL AMENDMENTS. Supersoil is an amendment....adding beneficial microbes to the soil....not a fertilizer spray. Ya don't need to look for what I'm doing wrong my friend...it's not chemical fertilizer...it's microbial soil amendment. I don't think you understand what super soil actually is brother. Things you're doing wrong, complaining, and not drinking beer.....oh and dyeing your beard....lame.
    Love your videos josh, im kidding here, for the first part, dont dye your beard, makes you look weak dude, like you're trying too hard. Be yourself, every is already here because of that. Keep on keepin on man, hope the the missus makes a few more cameos in your videos!

      not sure why dying my beard makes me any different a person than I was before buddy? If I whitened my teeth would it make me less of a man? lol Funny....we just all need to do what makes us happy with ourselves brother...as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else..I think it's fine. I will tell ya this....when I bought the farm I was in my late 30s....now I'm 46 and I'm seeing the aging process hit me a little faster than before. Building a farm like this and the stress of running an business can weigh heavy on ya and age ya a bit. My father dies his beard sometimes too.....and I get it now. As he's gotten older, more and more folks have tended to ignore him....he looks like an old man and folks just quit paying attention to him or treat him poorly in places like the hardware store, grocery store and others. I'm getting older, but I still appreciate the smile of a pretty young lady....none of us wanna get old...but we only have 2 options...get older...or the grave lol......so...the message here is ....do what makes you happy brother....beauty is only skin deep, but feeling good about yourself goes much deeper. Do what makes you feel good about yourself my brother

    Love your channel so sorry crazy expensive just for my edification how much for those 3 timbers alone ? I might get huge bandsaw and manufacturer those beams in I cabin I may build as my VA benefits may buy the farm pretty building structure I'd have used Seikens cetol 1,2 & 3 a three coat process fantastic finish really hold up stinky yeah pretty structure redish stain on slate type forms it's flagstone color and finish beauty color nicely done totally agree with clear coating concrete sooooo expensive but looks great. God bless you and your best mate misses Stoney Ridge I saw her say her name once even if Hogan I know nothing , nothing.
    Best David

      yep...once in a while we'll have to do one out of order brother. Here's why....I did a week of mowing and spraying...every day I mowed and sprayed and then disconnected everything for the winter....we needed to spread that content out so it didn't get boring
