    Hi Jerry thanks for this video! I have a 1938 blonde Deluxe - the 17" version. She's certainly been in better hands over her long life, but she cannot complain of being neglected. I play in a big band and we do quite a few gigs every year. She is the best instrument I've ever laid hands on in about 40 years of guitar playing: the quintessential big band guitar and a sweet versatile swing/bop instrument with a DeArmond on. The only acoustic archtop I'd really like to add to my stable at this point is precisely a 16" Deluxe. If I get a Broadway, I won't complain ;D I played a refin 1934 Deluxe side by side with my 1938 once and it stayed with me how different they were: the Epiphone sound for both, as you say, which I prefer to any other archtop sound, and the same sublime note separation and definition. However the 16" had such an immediate attack, and a very different way to project. As I live in Europe, these are even rarer than they are in the US but I have faith ;D Meanwhile, congratulations on a fantastic one-in-a-lifetime acquisition! Enjoy this marvellous guitar in good health and make her sing and swing!

      Hi and thanks for taking a watch and listen. You are correct on all accounts. I also have a 16” Blackstone I will not part with. That guitar leans a tad towards an L-5, it is loud and cutting. It was a workhorse for me many years. You are also correct about the DeArmond. I also have a Kent; to my ears as good. Best, Jerry

    Hello Jerry, Trev here from the UK. Thanks for your vid which I’ve subscribed to. I really enjoyed listening to your lovely Epi Deluxe. I only have a 2016 Century Zenith which I acquired last February. Being mostly a solo jazz pianist, I’ve lately come back to my first love,archtops! My arthritic hands weren’t prepared for the adventure so I’m doing the best I can with quiet (and slow!) Joe Pass-style chordal standards. I love my Epi although it’s provenance and history pales into the background compared to yours, but it’s all I can afford in my latter years!
    I look forward to more of your very pleasant offerings! Best wishes.

    Pretty sounding guitar, are those flat wound strings ??
    What gauge ?

    • @jerryfholes
      @jerryfholes  Год назад +1

      These are Tenorio Round Core; brass round wound. The round core is how strings were often wound. Less tension. This set is 14s. I am liking round core on acoustic and electric. D’addario makes a great set in acoustic Flat Tops but still round wound.

    Is that the original bridge?
    And is it a footed bridge or solid contact across the top?

    • @jerryfholes
      @jerryfholes  Год назад

      A great question. It is a newer style two foot bridge. When I sent it to Jay at archtop.com, the bridge style was not discussed. This bridge is what he decided to build. While I would have preferred a solid contact more traditional bridge, I am very happy with this one. Perhaps it is better, or at least as good.

      Oh--my!
      Thank you for coming back.
      I've been restoring pianos most of my life.
      Hampshire Piano. Chesterfield MA.
      And for 25 years or so wanted to experiment with making a guitar with piano SB engineering , and so now I have.
      My son and I have made ten pianotop guitars and No. 11 is soon to be.
      They are similar to arch-tops but not so in several ways.
      I have had questions Re: bridges on acoustic arch-tops and haven't had much luck or answers.
      I couldn't see on your video if the base of the bridge is touching all across or, is there a space. two separate contact spots.?
      Why do I ask these questions?
      Arch-tops have lateral nodal/anti nodal behavior like fiddles and the "feet" are on optimum positions, they are spaced apart to be on anti nodes.
      Solid contact bridges defeat that lateral undulation element .
      Longitudinal element is another story.
      Those blue guitars are a good example of not so good a tone as the Epiphone you have there.
      That blue guitar collection they just do not sound as good, really not good.
      I'll try Jay, maybe he wouldn't mind.
      Best.
      RB.

      @@hampshirepiano6383 I am very sorry, this guitar does not have two feet, but the entire length of the bridge. I was confusing two guitars. On acoustic archtops, the bridge must form exactly to the body. To the extent that one should not be able to slide a standard piece of paper underneath the bridge anywhere. There are archtops with two foot bridges. My Gibson L-48 has a two foot bridge. A bit different, but some banjo players insist on two legs, others insist on three legs. My feeling is newer archtop making is focusing on beauty rather than a cutting, punch, cutting chomp volume that was used, in the past. ALA Freddie Green and Allan Reuss and Eddie Lang.
