Started using computers early on ('98), and the veryfirst thing I started to notice was that my skin looked like it aged visibly after 3 -6 months of use (around 5 hours per day, sometimes longer). My skin looked noticeably worse. More visible wrinkles (even though I have very oily skin). More uneven skin tone. Before this, I always looked younger than my age, but in a very short time, it visibly affected my skin, where a friend even commented that my skin looked unhealthy. Hmmm. I contacted several dermatologists online on forums to ask if computers emitted radiation that could affect collagen and health of the skin, like the sun. This was back in 2000. Not ONE dr. ever commented on it or answered my question. So, thank you for addressing this possibility that I have noticed for 20 yrs. and have never seen anyone address until now.

I have very dark skin (think Lupita) and I have never found a tinted sunscreen deep enough...how about products that are advertised to fight HEVL (like Supergoop Unseen or Uriage Blue Light Serum)?
It is great to know the sun is the most damaging as I am getting ads related to screen exposure time and their wonderful product that will “keep me safe”. Did order 1 jar to give it a check out but I will not be reordering! Thanks for all this info and I do wear my sunscreen everyday! I do like foundation that has sunscreen in it but only to get some spot I might have missed. Thanks 🙏🏻
How can I use sunscreen without looking so oily? And if you’re wondering what kind of sunscreen I use, it’s elta MD uv sport. Is there a sunscreen that doesn’t make me look like an oil ball? I don’t really have a problem with the cast, but more so a problem with the oily look it leaves. I tried the cetaphil pro oily skin oil absorbing moisturizer spf 30 but it’s just too irritating around the eyes and it still looks oily even after I’ve given it half an hour to dry down. Now I’m trying the elta MD uv sport and it looks too oily on my face as well even after 30 minutes. The only way I seem to avoid the oily looking face is if I don’t put enough sunscreen on, but if I don’t put enough on then I might as well not even use it. I just want a good sunscreen that I can wear, and no one can tell that I’m even wearing it, because my family likes to give me a hard time about how I wear sunscreen everyday. People in general are always just like “Why are you wearing sunscreen?” and I try to tell them how it’s good for us to try and protect our skin from the sun especially in the summer, and it’s just like it goes right over their head because they’re still like “But it would be good for you to get some sun because you’re so pale”. Then I try to tell them how I don’t tan and only burn and then they come at me with the “but the only reason you burn is because you’re not used to the sun”. I can’t get a brake honestly. Also sorry for the rant lol.
@J T I usually only put the tintied sunscreen under my eyes. If I put it all over my face on top of the sunscreen then it sort of looks like I’m wearing makeup, and that’s not really the look that I’m trying to go for.
If I am in a room with windows, but NOT in direct sunlight, is sunscreen needed? You often mention wearing sunscreen even inside (like in your gym) but if the light is only indirect is it still damaging?
Amy Exo: Check out the video titled, “Should I wear sunscreen inside? In the car?| Q&A with Dr Dray”. You can easily find this video by typing “Dr Dray sunscreen indoors” in the RUclips search bar (without quotes).
J T I am specifically asking about indirect light- as in a west-facing window in the morning. No actual sun exposure, just light. Those question did not seem to be answered in comments
It’s the same but obviously much stronger. It would be fine for light skin tones but light cause pigmentation in deep skin tones. It doesn’t age skin it just triggers a damage response which causes skin to darken.
If you say you need 150 hours to see the effect of blue light in devices if you count it in years it actually does effect our skin, I don't think majority of us will just spend 30 minutes only everyday on our devices, we all know it’s more then that specially when we go to Instagram, Snapchat etc... the time just pass and you find yourself that you spent 3 or 4 hours even watching RUclips videos you don't just watch 1 video, plus some of us works for hours in the computer from morning to evening, sometimes we edit videos which takes hours then chill and watch TV well I believe we still get a lot of exposure even sun worse effects it doesn't show immediately it shows with time as you age from early skin aging, dark spots etc... it's the same with the devices it comes with time
Hello Dr. Dray, I just checked the Sephora website and realized that the sunscreen Murad City Shield SPF50 PA++++ contains less than one percent of synthetic fragrances. Does the percentage of fragrance matter? I try to avoid fragrance after following your channel.
Thank you for making this video! I’m a medical writer, so I spend my whole day in front of a computer screen. I placed anti-blue light shields on my computer and phone screens and also use the night shift, and wear my mineral and tinted sunscreen daily, hoping that may help (am I a crazy person?). I just wonder about the long-term accumulation of low-dose blue light exposure. Hopefully more research will come out soon!
I found one which is a sheer tint, non-nano zinc oxide 14%, but sadly it contains fragrance. Its called Badger Damascus Rose with Lavender & Chamomile Broad Spectrum SPF 25. I tried it and love it!
Thank you for making all the videos! I use Cerave now and love it! I love the night cream!!! I always say well Dr. Dray said this and it cracks my sister! 😻😍🤗🤩
But people still fail to understand that most things overlap. Most people are in their phones constantly. Phones are harder to see outdoors so you have to move the phone even closer to your face. Just want to thank you for stressing the need to wear sunscreen. It was not easy for me but I finally use sunscreen practically everyday even on overcast days. The texture of my skin has improved significantly. My pores are shrinking which is kind of amazing to see. It’s almost like wearing sunscreen allows the skin the time to naturally breathe and repair itself. The cheapest and yet the best skincare product money can buy.
Shiiiiiit your skin on your face barely has a godamn line. What do you do to maintain it i got laugh lines and it's breaking down my confidence level and i thought it was my cellphone light :/
Thank you so much for this video! As someone with melasma, I was really confused about what nano, non-nano meant. Avene makes tinted and non-tinted mineral sunscreens for intolerant skin but even though they have the UVA circle logo, the ingredients are nano-size so I"m not sure how much protection I'm getting. I love their compact in beige though!
I got Heliocare vitamins from my Derm and I've been using them regularly. I live in AZ, so I try it all...I have olive skin that tans when it even thinks about the sun, (even through most sunscreens), but my skin seems more resistant to getting color. The melasma on my face is noticeably faded as well.
GreenLover it’s tricky - I am very fair skinned and never get hyperpigmentation, my friend who is also fair skinned ( we usually wear the same shade foundation) get a lot of hyperpigmentation from even a single exposure 🤷♀️
I got blue light protection in my computer glasses. Am on warm tone for night watching this. Just applied my night sunscreen got my sunglasses on top of my regular glasses and am ordering the 50 spf face mask. I also use carave and got my new sleep and glow pillow. I am ageless at 62
Dr. Dray, your timing of this was PERFECT! I recently saw a couple of your videos where you recommend iron oxides in a tinted cream to help with blue, visible light and hyper pigmentation. I was wondering about the blue light emitted from PC screens (I am in IT so I'm in front of computer monitors all day long). This information was very helpful. I noticed you didn't recommend the Cetaphil Redness Reducing lotion with SPF in this video as you had in other videos. Does it not contain the 3% recommended amount?
Hello! I just wanted to say thank you so much for all of these very helpful skincare videos. You’re the main reason why I’ve gotten into skincare and without you I probably wouldn’t be applying sunscreen everyday to my face lol. On the topic of sunscreen, I had a few questions about the DRMTLGY BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 45 one.. is it water/sweat proof? When it dries down, what is it’s finish? How long would you say it lasts, using everyday and replying 2-3 times throughout the day? I have normal to slightly dry skin on my cheeks and oily on my T-Zone. I’m in search for a mineral sunscreen that won’t irritate my sensitive skin with no (or very light) white cast but won’t exaggerate the oil shine of my nose and clog pores. I know this is a lot but I’m in desperate need of help. If there are any other recommendations for different sunscreens please keep in mind that money is very tight for me so maybe things on the lower end when it comes to money. A sweatproof/waterproof sunscreen is one I’ve been searching for because I do many physical activities outdoors. Thank you ❤️

Thank you so much Doc, this video is timely for me, just started Heliocare at the recommendation of a friend who sees Dr Whitney and had good results adding it to her routine for hyperpigmentation.
Thanks for this list of sunscreens with iron oxide. I have been using Elta MD and the Colorscience sunscreen. Also have my Ipad in night time mode with warm light from evening until morning. Hope this will help me sleep better,. Will be sharing this with family. Hugs....Sherrry
Does staring at a screen all the time increase eye bags or puffiness? Btw just recently found your channel and I'm loving your content. Soo helpful thank you! ❤️
My understanding from a cosmetic journal is that in the inactive ingredients the percentage cannot be more than 1% each. In other words, each ingredient listed is only 1% . It cannot be more than that. I could of misunderstood, if so please correct me. But that was my understanding
I know Dr Dray that you are on a mission to help as many people as possible to avoid skin damage; I don't think I've come across a channel so rich in information that we as consumers of skin products as well as humans living in increasingly toxic environments need to know. Yes I use the best mineral based sun screen I can during the day but I am often on my computer after I've switched to a night time routine after swimming.. Am I going to change? No. I know the risks now but at 63 I just don't want to predecease my dog and live as full a life as I can, which includes reaching out to the community and for me some endurance sports that expose me to the elements. Because of your generosity in sharing your knowledge I can make informed choices; you deserve a Cole Porter song, :"You're the top'' you know the rest. Tx.

OMG Thank you. you just open my eyes. I have a very hard time falling to sleep. I am in front of my computer up to three hours or more before I get in bed and is three in the morning my mind can't stop I end up with two or hours of sleep every night, and feeling lousy all day!!!!

A valid option is a UV Face Mask, which Dr Dray has talked about and worn in past videos. For example: www.coolibar.com/unisex-face-mask-upf-50.html

Then I try to tell them how I don’t tan and only burn and then they come at me with the “but the only reason you burn is because you’re not used to the sun”. I can’t get a brake honestly. Also sorry for the rant lol.
Matthew: I really like EltaMD UV Sport too. I combat the shiny effect by putting a tinted mineral sunscreen on top, which also contains iron oxides.
Apply a light dusting of powder after if you can deal with the slight sheen.
this is kind of a personal journey with no actual answer. dont blot sunscreen off....that wastes it and you lose spf in the process
@J T I usually only put the tintied sunscreen under my eyes. If I put it all over my face on top of the sunscreen then it sort of looks like I’m wearing makeup, and that’s not really the look that I’m trying to go for.
@Rae Badding's What kind of powder? Setting powder?
If I am in a room with windows, but NOT in direct sunlight, is sunscreen needed? You often mention wearing sunscreen even inside (like in your gym) but if the light is only indirect is it still damaging?
Amy Exo: Check out the video titled, “Should I wear sunscreen inside? In the car?| Q&A with Dr Dray”.
You can easily find this video by typing “Dr Dray sunscreen indoors” in the RUclips search bar (without quotes).
Yes, even ambient low-level UVA (which passes through clouds, most glass etc.) affects the skin.
J T I am specifically asking about indirect light- as in a west-facing window in the morning. No actual sun exposure, just light. Those question did not seem to be answered in comments
Will blue light acne therapy expose skin to the same photo aging effect ? Or is it different than the ones found in screens ?
It’s the same but obviously much stronger. It would be fine for light skin tones but light cause pigmentation in deep skin tones. It doesn’t age skin it just triggers a damage response which causes skin to darken.
@@raebaddings1521 will it help to cancel out the hyperpigmentation if I couple it with red light or yellow light?
Turn on night shift on iPhone to reduce blue light guys!!!!!!!
You always seem to put a video up on exactly what I’m questioning. Thank you Dr. Dray for being you, you’re great!!!
Thank you for making this video! I sent you a request to cover this topic and I’m so incredibly grateful for your knowledge. 🦋
Hopefully more research will come out soon!
thanks for watching
TGIF Dr Dray :) Yes, you have turned me into a vampire but I am ok with that lol
Reed Berger-Fleishman Happy Friday
Another fantastic video! Thank you for going into such detail for us Dr. Dray! 💜
Thank you for addressing this topic and found it extremely educational. Have a great Friday!
You’re looking fabulous thanks for the educational videos.
Your skin is looking so good it looks like you have on cream color foundation!🌸🌸🌸
What about visible light from light bulbs? Should I be wearing sunscreen in a room with no windows and only light bulbs?
Sky Gale don’t worry about it lol
Sky Gale sun is the major source
I can’t with these comments 😂😂🙈🙈
I got Heliocare vitamins from my Derm and I've been using them regularly. I live in AZ, so I try it all...I have olive skin that tans when it even thinks about the sun, (even through most sunscreens), but my skin seems more resistant to getting color. The melasma on my face is noticeably faded as well.
Thorough awesome explanation as usual ❤
I got hyperpigmentation and sun spots but I’m fair skinned
GreenLover sunscreens for all
GreenLover it’s tricky - I am very fair skinned and never get hyperpigmentation, my friend who is also fair skinned ( we usually wear the same shade foundation) get a lot of hyperpigmentation from even a single exposure 🤷♀️
I got blue light protection in my computer glasses. Am on warm tone for night watching this. Just applied my night sunscreen got my sunglasses on top of my regular glasses and am ordering the 50 spf face mask. I also use carave and got my new sleep and glow pillow. I am ageless at 62
Always learning something new on your channel. Like being in class lol. Have a great Friday . ☺
Thank you ❤️
All of my light bulbs are 6500k LED 100 watt equivalent. Am I hurting myself? I like the look of these bulbs
Fitzpatrick type 2 people don't have to worry then? Phew.
Loved this video Dr. Dray!! Very Very Interesting Topic for sure!! I have often Wondered about this topic!! Thank You for a Perfect video as Always!! Please Enjoy Your Day!!
Hi I purchased the one you recommended pure simply.
Wear it under makeup it works fine. thanks Dr.Dray. Jennifer 😊 👍❤️
Happy Friday!
what about led light , light bulbs ,lamps?
can you do a video on coldsores please? I'm desperate for answers and I'm a huge fan of your videos. Also, what's your opinion on lysine for treating both acne and cold sores?
I'm breaking out with large painful acne and also getting cold sores back to back. Do you think there is a connection between the two?
What type of fluorescent lighting should one get for the home and kitchen for good skin and mental health?
Happy Friday Dr. Dray! Thank you for all the work you do and sharing your knowledge with the world. I thouroughly enjoyed learning this topic from you and now have better understanding of blue light and product tips to protect my skin. Thank you for the education and please keep up the good work!
Happy Friday!
Thank you very much for this informative video Dr Dray.
My understanding from a cosmetic journal is that in the inactive ingredients the percentage cannot be more than 1% each. In other words, each ingredient listed is only 1% . It cannot be more than that. I could of misunderstood, if so please correct me. But that was my understanding
Which journal did you read?
Tx.
Our lord and Queen has returned! ✌
Happy Friday!
Does specific glasses help?
Xavier Binet good question!
I'm just following this comment section xD
blue blocking films
Does mineral sunscreen with zinc and titanium without iron oxide protect against blue light ?
Thank you so much for all this information! Happy weekend, Dr Dray 😘❤️❤️
Does that mean blue LED light used in PDT can lead to hyperpigmentation as well or is that different?
GirlyMuscleTV dose is not the same
What's the difference with phones' blue light to the LED lights used in dermatology? Are LED lights damaging, too?
Thanks Dr. Dray, loving your videos, and I have talked my grown son into wearing sunscreen.
Happy Friday!
Hi dr Dray! Thank you for your video. Ive been researching the Google about blue light recently and finally I got to watch your video. I have a question though: does blue light cause wrinkles too?
OMG Thank you. you just open my eyes. I have a very hard time falling to sleep. I am in front of my computer up to three hours or more before I get in bed and is three in the morning my mind can't stop I end up with two or hours of sleep every night, and feeling lousy all day!!!!
I saw that the pink Skin Aqua Sun Gel has iron oxides in it. Would you please do a review of that? I'm curious about the color.
