disappearing has ALSO to do with recording, eg engineers almost always place instruments in the stage (such as drums, bass, singer always in the middle), including placing some sounds/instruments solely on either the left or right channel (such that we hear such sounds from the speaker and not the stereo stage on the front wall)
There are so many factors that go into an audio experience. This is the greatest and most crucial factor involved in judging any sensory experience. Two people can listen to the same "objective" audio generation and have two totally different reactions to what they are "hearing."
LOL. Just today I was wiggling my ears (with just muscle, not touching them) and noticed the not insignificant difference in sound, especially midrange, occured with the small shape change. Speakers disappearing in the room is very simple. Can be achieved with most modern day gear. The hard trick is to get that naturalness to the notes releasing from the drivers and floating in the air when the sounds recreated don't sound like they are being reproduced by speakers. Now that's what you want to achieve. When you get it.....chef's kiss.
Thanks for your explanations! I enjoy the program a lot. As a music producer I must mention the poorly produced and mixed outro music. A high end company deserves a better sounding sound logo. For the rest: keep up the good work!
Ohm’s, the late Allison Acoustic’s(IC-20), Larsen’s, and Shahinian’s are masters at disappearing…. and quiet as it’s kept, Klipschorn’s and Everest 67000 JBLs can disappear. And NOT just those speakers either! (They’re just VERY good at it) Polk’s classic SDA technology was famous for it, (available only in the Legend 800)now.
I find planars and omnis do the best at disappearing. Love my Maggies. My first AXPONA a few years ago found only a pair of Jones box speakers that could do it properly. That included in the million dollar rooms! Have not had a chance to listen to your Aspens but I know you use a planar mid and tweeter because of your love of Maggies and the LRS5 line arrays. I find other boxes, especially with domes and horns, at best create a thin line spread at tweeter height. And as you say you can point to the boxes.
I experienced that with a streamed version of Dave Grusin’s Cripple Creek Break-Down on Sonus Faber Suprema played through a Dan D’Agostino Momentum system. I’ve never heard that song as real or live as that but it took a 1.4 million dollar system to hear it. I’m sure it can be done cheaper but that caught me by surprise.
Until you have experienced Soundstage and Imaging, you have not fully experienced 2 channel stereo sound. Imagine if when you watched a movie, the characters would holographically appear in your living room to act out the movie. THAT is what proper stereophonic sound is.

The FR series is not the only speaker that makes the boxes disappear. There are plenty of other companies that make speakers that do the exact same thing. First you need to have a great recording. If you don’t nothing else matters at least to me
I’m sure Paul realizes that. I didn’t see any indicators that would suggest otherwise. He does use his products from time to time to make his points which is fair as CEO.
You don't need PS Audio Aspen speaker for that to happen. The first time I got that in my lounge room was in 2008 with a set of Bowers & Wilkins 684 It's all a question of setting the speaker in the right spot.
It’s still track dependent though. Play something recorded bright and it’ll sound terrible on a nicely set up system, but great through a crappy Alexa!
As the source is an unalterable given, a starting point that I entirely leave to the recording engineers, the best we can do is recreate what is captured on the source material. And, in my journey, only when I replaced my Magicos with my Aspens did the entirety of my system fade aways. I have been in the audio world since the 1970's and for me this is a first!

I've heard recordings wear some instruments happen to be placed in The Sound Stage right about where my speakers are. So it's all about the recording.
No speakers completely disappear.
Boxes 📦 never dissappear 😮
