1979 Dodge RV Restore #2 - Starting Issues

  • Did a quick vid to outline some of the starting issues I had with our 1979 Dodge Camper. I bought this camper about 1 1/2 ago and and quite soon realize that something was up when it often would not start after it had been running for about 20 minutes. Eventually I discovered that my really old starter had an issue called "heat-soak" which means that one it got hot it would not function as well. So I picked up a high-torque starter that solved the problem. The next issue was a bad alternator, which I discovered only after the muffler exploded and the battery completely died.
    I also had some major issues with the engine which eventually meant I had to take the heads off and get them rebuilt, but that is a story for another video.

    Thanks for this video. I have a 1979 Dodge Sportsman RV with a 440 in it and it starts easy at first and once it's hot I will have to turn it over for 10-15 seconds before it fires up. I'm going to change the starter and hopefully that fixes the issue.

    Hello I just bought a 1979 dodge sportsman the original owner installed new alternator and doesn’t know why it’s not charging the battery. You think it might be that module u pointed out in your video?

    I found the problem is that pink wire from the coil that goes into the firewall for the ignition they had a red wire going from it to the solenoid on the firewall that controls all the back stuff and it was just ripped and tied together and takes so had no real good connection so I was losing voltage but thanks anyhow and I could never locate that starter control module maybe include me in 75 Dodge Fireball

    Another thing- the instrument cluster voltage regulator. The old version is an old bi-metal arm & when it breaks, it'll 'full-field' the voltage and cook your gauges- new ones are electronic, cost around $38-47. That huge alternator? It's a Leece-Neville unit. Found mostly in old cop cars of the day, you'd need the brackets, isolators (they are rubber isolated, that's why there are big mounting holes) & engine pulleys to fit it. Go to AR Engineering, get one of Andy's kits that fits a Nippondenso alternator in there. Smaller, more juice, more efficient & easy replacement with off the shelf modern parts.

    Awesome stuff. I just bought a 78 Sportsman yesterday and it fired right up when buying it, then didn't want to start again later and now the starter is having probelms, I guess I gotta get one of those high torque ones. Also my ballast resistor is behind my battery and the 2 wires aren't even plugged into it so I guess somebody bypassed it. The ecu plug you pointed out is also just hanging unplugged on mine. My muffler appears blown up like yours also. Right now it's cranking sometimes, but not turning over.

    Hey folks I have a 1975 Dodge Fireball with a 318 and I've had a little issue with electrical voltage in will not start although I can put a jump wire from the positive side of the battery to the coil positive side and it'll fire right up the I thought maybe it was the ballast resistor replace didn't nothing replace the ignition and the tumbler still nothing now on the ignition I can touch the black wire the big black wire to the pink wire and it'll fire up and I still can't track down this problem I even replace the wire going from the loom to the coil positive side. Maybe he was burnt out but nothing it'll act like it wants to start but will not unless I use the jumper wire but I found out if you use a jump wire it can also drain your battery to nothing thank you

    maybe you can tell me what the control starter module is and where it would be located because no as far as I know I did I don't know what it looks like I replace the ballast resistor and the ignition switch and tumbler that's all I have it replaced does located and what its purposes and how do I test it with a multimeter

    • @tfived4339
      @tfived4339  6 лет назад

      jones c harvey I don’t know exactly where it would be on your vehicle, or even really if your vehicle has one. I know on this Dodge Camper it is mounted on the firewall directly under the master cylinder. Check out 3:24 of this video.
      Also, replacing the coil and the ballast was probably a good idea given the age of the vehicle, but these components have to do with the running of the engine, not the starting of the engine, So I would not expect it to have an effect on how well your engine starts or doesn’t start.
      Basically, what I did is I looked on Rockauto.com to see what it looked like and then started looking around under the hood to find it.

    your voltage regulator is supposed to be very well grounded by using a clean metal ground through zinc coated mounting screws, you need to attach 2 more to your firwall voltage re goo later!.... Gonz...clean grounds on a motorhome ive got a 1978 doge tioga...wear eye and face protection nasty, rusty oily crud...
