David Bowie was an English singer-songwriter & actor. He constantly reinvented himself to stay current over nearly 5 decades. His first big hit was "Space Oddity" in 1969. He had a lot of great songs including "Ziggy Stardust", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Changes", "Fame", "Golden Years", "Ashes To Ashes", "Under Pressure", Let's Dance", "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Heroes" etc.
It is hard to really grasp Bowie as an artist until you sample songs from across his long catalogue because every album sounds totally different - music hall, pop, glam, rock, soul, industrial, electronica... His "great run" in the 1970s changed music forever - yes, he shocked the world with his look and sound - but his greatest commercial success was in the 1980s. His last several albums in the 2000s, however, are just as strong. I can't think of another artist who started in the '60s who continued to make equally brilliant music at the end of their careers.
He was an artist in every sense of the word. He was one of those alternative celebrities that made me feel comfortable trying different things as I tried to discover myself. He was very important to me in my own development. I appreciate him so much. He never stopped trying out new ways of expressing himself.
As a kid in the 70s with an active imagination, this song terrified me every time it came on the radio… I just imagined this poor man drifting in space forever. It honestly took me a long time to appreciate Bowie because I had such a visceral negative reaction to his voice for a long time. But I did come around to recognize his genius eventually. There’s a lot more Bowie to love! Changes, Rebel Rebel, Life on Mars, Young Americans, Under Pressure… so many incredible tracks from this totally unique legend.
Same. Exactly the same, with the Space Oddity fear. It was like a tragic story they turned into a song. "Run Joey Run" freaked me out, too. 😆😆😆😆 I was such a wuss.
I saw this concert!! It was phenomenal ! He actually had a space ship come down from the ceiling…his props were literally out of this world! Loved him!👍💕. A pure genius!🥰
I would highly recommend you checking out Commander Chris Hadfield on board the International Space Station performing this song, it is both mindblowing and a fitting tribute to Bowie and the countless imaginations that this song inspired over the decades.
"Ziggy Stardust" was Bowie's world-changing new character. Unlike anything early-70's, he literally transformed into an Androgynous Alien on stage, posing as a human, enjoying it's seductive power, disturbing and a bit menacing. Totally other-worldly, Ziggy shocked conventional audiences, and created a massive cult following. At the brink of world-fame, Bowie unexpectedly announced (on stage), the end of Ziggy, and moved on. Check out amazing Live performances from "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars".
I discovered Bowie and this song in 78 in the 7th grade. The small town library was by the jr high and high school. They had the album, a small record player and headphones. I bet I wore that song off the album I played it so many times )
Back in the 60s the Bee Gees had a totally different sound and were very good at storytelling. Try listening to 'New York Mining Disaster 1941' which was a huge hit for them. I can totally see where Bowie got their influence.
A tribute to the astronauts (and moon landing) in '69! Musicians did not make videos when this was made (since it didn't yet exist). The fact that he filmed this was another way Bowie was so far ahead of his time. Now you gotta do Cmdr Chris Hadfield's cover live from the ISS!
The entire world literally sang this song together when he died. Find video of the Serious Moonlight tour. 1983. I was at one and he was awesome. Oh, the last album made while he was dying must be on your journey.
After 6 years of trying to become recognised, David wrote and released this in 1969, aged 22! His style? His own style. No 2 songs are the same, no 2 looks are the same. David would reinvent himself to suit the times. From here up to 1973 he personified the alien character of Ziggy Stardust and released it's concept album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Try, Moonage Daydream Suffragette City. BTW David also did mime, performed in theatres, played the saxophone...all prior to 1969. He worked right through to the end, releasing his last works in January 2016, just prior to his death at age 69😢. He's been one of my idols and I'm so glad I got to experience his concert, in 2004
Great reaction. He is my favorite singer of all time. He played 14 instruments, he was also an actor! Another great song to react to is: Time, Teenage Wildlife and Quicksand.
Was lucky enough to see him live in Memphis in the 70’s- with Cat Stevens opening. He was SO ahead of his time- and the look (this look) is part of the glam rock scene. His repertoire is so varied with each persona. You just have to keep exploring .
This song actually has a sequel, and it has a great video as well. The song is called " Ashes to Ashes" and is off his tremendous, and very infkuential 1980 album, Scary monsters. One of my favorite, underrated bowie song is from an early akum, Hunky Dory, called, Kooks And its pronounced bow-ee, like bow and arrow
Not a song suggestion, but just popping in to say Bowie was super ahead of the times on a lot of things. He's the first artist that I'm aware of to successfully negotiate retaining all publishing rights to his own music into each of his contracts. In 1990 he successfully bought out his contract with a label and previous manager he wanted to get free of, for a lump sum cash offer that left him close to wiped out. He actually walked into a bank to take out a loan on the collateral of essentially "being David Bowie" in order to pay for it. Shortly after that he reissued his entire (now free and clear) song catalogue on a pair of expansive boxed sets called Sound+Vision through Rykodisc, along with a tour series which he said would be his last live performances of the old catalogue, and which earned him enough to compensate the previous buyout from the other label and pay off the loans. He also issued stock bonds (the majority of which were bought by Prudential Insurance Company) that paid out based on his future album sales. In 1996 he even pioneered livestream simulcast, broadcasting a live show to theaters across the US, in an early live version of what Taylor Swift is doing with her concert film now. He did an exclusive online only song release for download, which was the first time that had been offered. That year he also introduced what is arguably the first music streaming service, though the technology was still developing... he created UltraStar, which turned into BowieNet, an online hosting service and internet provider. When people were still using dial-up with America Online discs, he was offering subscription internet access, which came with exclusive music (before spotify), fan boards (before reddit), and ticket purchasing (before stubhub) and a bowienet email address. His idea was that in a few years, streaming (which didn't exist yet, mp3 players weren't even around) would replace physical media for music sales. He had a lot of collaboration / got into trouble with Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, etc. He had entire concept albums he never published or finished producing, and more than one legitimate stage show rock opera he worked on with people before deciding on different directions (knowing but not yet making public that he was terminally ill). It was really a "whatever excited him right now" kind of situation.
I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. It's fascinating to see you fascinated with this. But I must tell you, this is just the tiniest tip of the iceberg. He did so many different kinds of things and had so many looks and personas. And it wasn't just in the 70s man he was absolutely huge in the 80s to a whole new audience but they were the really super hip people around the edges and yet his stuff still kept breaking through and charting on mainstream radio. He is so highly revered. He also collaborated with John Lennon from the Beatles in the seventies, that was a lot of fun. For something more down to earth, pardon the pun, but still totally Bowie often his world, check out Queen bitch, and there are a couple of interesting live versions in front of I think television Studio audiences, but maybe one is an actual concert. But his Studio tracks are fantastic as well both to that, and some of his other early hits, like Rebel rebel, and, suffragette city, and then of course the spiders from Mars stuff is all fantastic with many huge hits, and that was also in this Ziggy Stardust phase which he looks like in this video.
The Bee Gees had three stages of their music career. They started out as child prodigies in the late-1950s to the early-1960s in Australia. In 1967, the trio moved to the UK, and had a number of hit Pop Rock songs in the US and the UK in the late-1960s. In 1975, they started playing and recording Soul-inspired Disco music, which defined the public’s perception of the trio for the rest of their career. The Bee Gees made a promotional film clip to promote their 1967 hit song, “I Started A Joke”. You might want to react to that “music video” at your most convenient time. You will also want to react to their 1967 hit song, “To Love Somebody”. There is a good TV performance of the song by The Bee Gees on the West German music program, “Beat Club”, available for viewing here on RUclips.
David Bowie was an innovator in so many ways including music videos. You mostly can't go wrong, but when you get around to reacting to "Heroes" (one of the greatest songs ever written) please react to the studio recording or a live version. The "official music video", while very cool, uses the single edit which cuts out so much of what makes the song great-- the intense gorgeous buildup. I really enjoyed this reaction! Enjoy the Bowie rabbit hole! It's deep! 😊
Space exploration was very new, there was no music videos for another 10 years or so. The beginning is all the pr of NASA. Then it goes wrong and he floats away in space. Bowie absolutely blew us away , and he alway created a character to base his music around until later in life. He was hounded by the press and they treated him like a freak, that didn’t help his drug use. Epic piece of art ☮️
Some great tracks to follow with: "Ashes to Ashes" is a sequel to "Space Oddity." Also check out "Fame," "Changes," "Life on Mars?", "Heroes," "Scary Monsters and Super Creeps," "Golden Years," "Teenage Wildlife," "I'm Afraid of Americans"... there's just too many great songs from him.
I'm Afraid of Americans is one of my favorites. His vibe is so fun with it. It is one of those "odd" songs that I fit into a lot of my playlists just because I love it so much.
One of the most innovative and creative musicians of all time. His constant reinventing of himself led to so much brilliant music that you are heading down one deep rabbit hole. Try my personal favourite "Heroes".
The Bowie rabbit hole. Love it. Check out Changes…what I think is his signature ‘70’s song and Suffragette City. I mean who hasn’t screamed at the top of their lungs…Wam Bam Thank You Ma’am!!!
Crazy thing is that Major Tom loses his connection to Ground Control. In those days space vehicles were almost entirely controlled from the ground which means he was basically adrift at the end.
Getting close to that 50k subscribers!👍 David's last name is pronounced Bow-ee (as in bow and arrow). He was known as a glam rocker in the early 70's thus the clothing & makeup. He was a very versatile artist. When they compared him to the Bee Gees, I was kind of surprised, although the Bee Gees sound in the late 60's were different than the Disco era. Great reaction though. Goto dive deep into David's repertoire.🎃
Now what if I told you that Major Tom from Space Oddity was a reoccurring character in Bowies music until the end? Check out in order, Ashes to Ashes, Hello Space Boy, and finally Black Star.
Wether you listen to David's albuns chronologically or not he will always blow your mind, Bowie has been a part of my life since I was 12 years old, really enjoyed your reaction!
David Bowie was one if those rare artist who was a master at reinventing his image and sound. He always seemed to be a step ahead of everybody else. His is a deep rabbit hole but its well worth the dive in.
Thanks, MMB! David Bowie was an innovator.. extremely unique and talented.. he re-invented his image numerous times.. this was "Ziggy Stardust"... another great song from this album is "Star Man".. I appreciate your reaction!
You did a reaction to Queen's "Under Pressure" (the one with the bass riff stolen by Vanilla Ice). Anyway, that song was written by Queen and David Bowie (pronounced BO-ee, not BOO-ee). David and Freddie sing it as a duet on the official video. They were all great friends. David performed at Freddie's memorial concert.
David Bowie is a chamillion...Every album he evolved. This was his "Ziggy Stardust" personal. The album was Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars. Ck out suffergette city.
great reaction! love your research and enthusiasm. not just for the song, but also the artist. He really is one of the greatest and most influential people in popular music. and yes, his 70s run is one of the best ever. so many great albums, looks, and changes ( he has a song called "Changes"). but he did great work also in the 90s. you cannot really go wrong with him. recommended songs: "Changes", "Heroes"(studio version, 6minutes!), "Ziggy Stardust", "Golden Years", "Sound and Vision" or "Strangers When We Meet" -- for me he is the greatest and I miss him dearly. Welcome to Bowie and enjoy the ride, it will make you smile :)
This song came out in 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission. The video was 1972. Music videos were not yet a big thing, but were made for broadcast TV shows occasionally. MTV was about 10 years later.
For early David Bowie songs, you should check out his 1970 song, “The Man Who Sold The World”, which was covered by Nirvana on their TV concert on “MTV Unplugged”. Another one is his 1972 song, “Suffragette City”. A third one from 1972 is his song “Starman”. He and his band do a great TV performance of the song on BBC’s “Top Of The Pops” music program.
He was the OG when it comes to the wild looks/costumes of a Madonna, Lady gaga type thing. That’s where they got their influences in that regard but even more shock and awe given the times and fact he was initially the first.
Bowie was a pioneer of the glam rock genre of the early 1970s. Bowie was famous for constantly reinventing himself, pioneering new forms of music and his fashion sense, particularly from the early 70s to mid-80s. His most well-known album is The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (Please react to ‘Moonage Daydream’ from that album). Oh, by the way, his name is pronounced BOW-E, not BOO-E. Great reaction. Please do more Bowie, one of my all time favorite artists.
For 70s music especially Headphones are required. The music was devised and produced even played with them in mind. This song with headphones is completely different!
The way you enjoyed the trippy end of this made me think you need to do Pink Floyd. The Dark Side of the Moon album. Look it up. You need to hear it. And lots of Pink Floyd.
Bowie was a visionary and he had a tremendous impact on music, film, and theatre. He pushed boundaries the entirety of his life. It would be great to get a song or two from each album to get a sense of his arc. And for fun, as we approach the holidays, listen to his duet of The Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby. (Do you even know who Bing is!? 😂)
It may be a bit harder for newer audiences to understand why Bowie is such a famous artist but it takes some homework or jumping in the David Bowie rabbit hole, very unique artist. There's a movie that came out recently that shows a bit about him before he became a superstar. This song, is an epic one, has been used in movies, shows, everything and has been covered by many artists as well.
Saw him in Anaheim early 70's song started with him in a capsule 60' or so up un the rafters, slowly decending to the stage. A "Trip" if you get my drift. Also married to Iman a supermodel.
When u say Let’s talk about his style, what you will learn going forward is that his “style” can change from song to song. He is a chameleon. Ever changing
You can't describe Bowie ... David was/is art! :) ♥ He was an epic actor, too! He was the "The Goblin KIng" in the movie "The Labyrinth" < and yes, he did performed there, too. Queen (< you remember? Freddie Mercury, etc.) did a track with Bowie, too. It's called "Under Pressure". You might heard at least the riff of this track, as it got famous again when "Vanilla Ice" made his "Ice Ice Baby" song with a sample of it. As he didn't asked in advanced, so he got sued for it! *arg
I hope you do Heroes next. My favorite David Bowie song. Then Young Americans. And Changes. And then Let's Dance from the 80's which is completely different.
He didnt had a green eye, one of his eyes was discolourated and permanently dilated due to a childhood accident. Itbgives the ilusion it is of a different colour but no, he was born with normal monochomatic blue eyes.
You really can't go wrong with any song you pick from David Bowie. You got it right when You said he was a pillar. He was a pillar for Rock, punk, and pop. One of my favorites from Bowie is Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from mars. P.S. I still would like to hear your reaction to VoicePlay.
I'd forgotten just how spiritual & uplifting this is. He describes a man completely overcome by feelings of awe & wonder at the beauty of the universe. He surely must have seen the film '2001: A Space Odyssey' with it's absolutely breathtaking opening. He was certainly a unique musical phenomenon.
Not an orchestra. I believe it’s a mellotron being played by Rick Wakeman. This is before Rick joined YES. Bowie changed his style. So there in not one style. Might be good to hear his song ‘Changes’. He was married to model Iman. You may have heard of her.
Deep dive into the exotic world of David Bowie! Dozens of a variety of tunes to go including the tune Fame, Heroes, Let’s Dance, and Under Pressure which he sings with Freddie Mercury and Queen! Gus Dudgeon produced several early albums by Elton John including Elton’s self titled Elton John album. Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across The Water albums of Elton’s! Compare this tune of David’s to The Brother Gibbs song 1941 NY Coalmining Disaster.Have you listened to songs from The Beatles Sgt. Pepper album?
PANIC IN DETROIT , AND MOONAGE DAYDREAM ARE SICK ON DAVID LIVE ,AWESOME AX EARL SLICK IS SLICK ALLRIGHT AND DAVID IS GREAT , HE WAS ZIGGY , THE THIN WHITE DUKE ,( station to station) real good trax them first two , like real good cheers from Aus
This song is from the Ziggurat Stardust Album which is one of the best albums ever! If you have the opportunity to hear the whole album, you won’t regret it!
If you're going to do it other songs by David Bowie I suggest Lazarus with the original video it was released a few days before he passed away he was an artist till the day he died other good songs are running gun blues, quicksand, new killer star
It charted years after release because he had just released Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. It’s all Bowiestyle.

One thing about Bowie is that you have to be prepared his his many constant ch-ch-ch-changes.

changes one bowie

wait til you see him as Ziggy Stardust
Welcome To The Awesome World That Is BOWIE ❤️
As a kid in the 70s with an active imagination, this song terrified me every time it came on the radio… I just imagined this poor man drifting in space forever. Agree!! And space travel was so new and so terrifying...just to imagine what could go wrong. And the result of that.... I love David so much. ❤❤❤
Same.
As a kid in the 60's, each space flight had everyone on edge until a safe touchdown and retrieval occurred.
David Bowie.Very unique. Always reinventing himself. Another grand reaction and take on the music as a whole. Fire it is!!!! Thank you again.
Amazing cover! Hadfield did a lot of videos, including science experiments in a deep sea submersible. (talk about versatility!)
He wrote this song and realized it in 1969. I think this video is from 72 or 73.
Mmmmmmellotron. Love it, enjoy this journey.
Bowie. Enough said. His song Star Man is great. Along with pretty much anything he's ever done. Especially "Under pressure" with Freddie Mercury.
He was a true artist
"Ziggy Stardust" was Bowie's world-changing new character. This was not the original music video for this song, thus was filmed with Bowie at the height of his Ziggy Stardust persona popularity.
David Bowie was a master at sound and lyrics. He was considered the chameleon of the music world. Genius & talented. His very own.
After 6 years of trying to become recognised, David wrote and released this in 1969, aged 22!

Moonage Daydream
Suffragette City.

Featured the synth, or mellotron... Bowie is genius
David Bowie and Peter Frampton were great childhood friends. They went to technical school together!!!
Great reaction. He is my favorite singer of all time. He played 14 instruments, he was also an actor! Another great song to react to is: Time, Teenage Wildlife and Quicksand.

THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!

My favorite Christmas song is Bowie's duet with the legendary Bing Crosby and their mash up of the Little Drummer Boy and Peace on Earth.
Cry every time...
The Bee Gees were a different sounding band in the 1960’s than the disco direction they took in the mid 1970’s.
The Bowie rabbit hole. Love it. Check out Changes…what I think is his signature ‘70’s song and Suffragette City. I mean who hasn’t screamed at the top of their lungs…Wam Bam Thank You Ma’am!!!
Major tom eventually makes it back home it takes about 4 songs along with another group To finish the story
Always ahead of his time. Bowie was always weird but cool beyond belief. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is a great, great album.
His Ziggy period was awesome.
Crazy thing is that Major Tom loses his connection to Ground Control. In those days space vehicles were almost entirely controlled from the ground which means he was basically adrift at the end.
The voice is amazing, the double tracked voice is genius.
Some of Bowie's best songs you should give a listen to: Heros (Live), Golden Years, Fame, Modern Love
The bass guitar and drummer are just totally going off there at the end underneath all that Spacey stuff going on. Love it. It's funky as hell.
Call first date. The kid asked? I was did quite well after the eighties he had the last stance to know that china girl and all that stuff going
Just one time just once. You can't know that it's the song called just once all right?😅
It's good at right one time alright come on
You did a reaction to Queen's "Under Pressure" (the one with the bass riff stolen by Vanilla Ice). Anyway, that song was written by Queen and David Bowie (pronounced BO-ee, not BOO-ee). David and Freddie sing it as a duet on the official video. They were all great friends. David performed at Freddie's memorial concert.
The ultimate Chameleon. So many persona, so many genres.
Pioneer is the word that comes to mind
Early seventies he was part of a music genre called Glam Rock
For 70s music especially
Headphones are required.
The music was devised and produced even played with them in mind.
This song with headphones is completely different!
a performer who has never been afraid to experiment - both with music and with his appearance.
Me remembering experiencing Bowie while my friends were tripping.....lol! Psychedelic music dude!
Yes his souuuo creative 'RIP , i love David Bowie
When u say Let’s talk about his style, what you will learn going forward is that his “style” can change from song to song. He is a chameleon. Ever changing
You can't describe Bowie ... David was/is art! :) ♥
He was an epic actor, too!
*arg
Btw, they didn't have green screen for music videos in the 70s. ❤
Probably my favorite of his songs is Let's Dance but he has so many good ones like this.
This was Bowie's first big hit, during the space race era.
BTW, I own 11 of his albums and they only go to 1979!!! His catalogue is immense!
I hope you do Heroes next. My favorite David Bowie song. Then Young Americans. And Changes. And then Let's Dance from the 80's which is completely different.
What I thought of DB was he had one blue eye and one green eye. I had never heard of that before.
He didnt had a green eye, one of his eyes was discolourated and permanently dilated due to a childhood accident. Itbgives the ilusion it is of a different colour but no, he was born with normal monochomatic blue eyes.
The early early Bee Gees (the 60s) were way different that the disco then pop Bee Gees
You need to hear the unofficial part two of this song, Major Tom by Peter Schilling! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Fame, Changes, Heroes, and Golden Years are a good starting point but the list is endless. Enjoy!
Superb deconstruction. Bowie is for sure complex, but beloved.
♥ also.... When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Matthew 9:36
I think the green wave was a oscilloscope reading, and they were using the mixing board for other shots
Bowie was ahead of his time. Yes, it was outside the box in many ways...lol
It charted years after release because he had just released Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
It’s all Bowiestyle.
It's David Bowie, not Bouey lol. The first line on wikipedia says how to pronounce it and everything. Boh-ee. Like bow and arrow.
This actually came out 9 days before the moon landing in 1969.
He also the slim white Duke. And he performed with Tina Turner.
“New York Mining Disaster” by the Bee Gees on their first album about 1966.
Pinky rolling up to his record shop in next Friday, “Fame” by Bowie is playing if I’m not mistaken.
Ahh...Brilliant! Thank You!
I would recommend listening to this one with headphones. I didn't realize how much I was missing and how good it really is until I did.
Glam Rock was a definite style in the 70s with Alice Cooper, and others it was a style many artist incorporated.
I think it’s either about coming to terms with his rising fame, or the song is about a psychedelic trip.
He always was different and great! The closest thing to mainstream I think he did was a duet with Bing Crosby for the song Little Drummer Boy!
