The single Space Oddity released by Mercury Records in July as Armstrong and Aldrin were landing on the moon (the album released in Nov 1969). In 1971 Bowie signed with RCA Records, company who also bought his previous Mercury releases. So the 1969 album titled David Bowie (there was a 1967 David Bowie album as well, different record label; Deram Records) was re-released in 1971 under the name Space Oddity now on RCA Records. His other album, 1970s The Man Who Sold The World was also re-released by RCA, however with a different cover. This video I believe is for a BBC program and has Bowie with his signature Ziggy Stardust carrot color hair.
When this song came out I was 11 and begged for and got that 45; I wore it out. Still love this song. There was a sort of sequel to this song by Peter Schilling called "Major Tom (Coming Home)." It reached No.1 in Germany and Austria, and no. 14 in USA. You might want to check it out sometime. Looking forward to more Bowie!
Great place to start. Was his first taste of commercial success. Came out in 69 though, rereleased as title track for the album of same name. Anyway, thank you. Subbed for the Bowie!
David Bowie was known globally as "The Chameleon of Rock" as he reinvented himself throughout his career, along with his multiple personas. It was indeed Ziggy Stardust in this video. Space Oddity was initially released just before the moon landing in 1969 and was used as part of the coverage. If you liked this you're in for a real treat discovering his work, the guy was incredibly influential and a legit musical genius. So much good stuff to choose from its impossible to pick a single track. I can only suggest you listen to all of these! His biggest 70s stuff I'd recommend (in order of release): The Man Who Sold The World, Changes, Life On Mars, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, John I'm Only Dancing, Jean Genie, Sorrow, Rebel Rebel, Young Americans, Fame, Golden Years, Sound and Vision (one of my faves) and Heroes. From the 80s: Ashes to Ashes, China Girl, As The World Falls Down (from the Labyrinth soundtrack). If you have to pick an iconic track from each decade I would probably say Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes (the latter seeing the return of Major Tom). As a visionary he also predicted how impactful the internet would become in our lives back in a 1999 interview.
Great way to go through his songs 🙂 you have a fantastic journey ahead of you! I look forward to seeing your reactions 🙂

Notorious was a song by Duran Duran, not Bowie.
