The credits in the beginning say Produced and Directed by "Mick Rock"... He just passed away the other day. A great British photographer who took many iconic photographs of David Bowie Queen and pictures of Freddie alone. He did the cover for "Queen 2" that inspired the beginning of the well known "Bohemian Rhapsody" silhouette, and many other videos and album covers including "Sheer Heart Attack" too. Mick Rock was very friendly with Freddie and David on a personal level and worked with other rock stars of that era. Very much a Rock Star in his own right.
This song by David was his first hit to make it. Inspired by the iconic walk on the moon. And was the intro to "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" Check out "Ashes to Ashes" Major Tom makes another appearance on that song and on David's last album "Black Star" David was and is a true legend ... Who will always have a special place in my heart. You should listen to the album "Station to Station" in it's entirety. "Wild is the Wind" and "Word on a Wing" are beautiful ballads. David's voice is outstanding and Dereck the title track will blow your mind completely.
      Rest Peacefully Starman...Miss you

I'd really like to hear your reaction to "Golden Years" due to it's incredibly crisp accoustics and very unique soundscape. But I'm not going to complain about Any Bowie. Golden Years is seriously yummy ear candy.

Space Oddity, a classic, can never be duplicated. This one was the 1972 re-release of Space Oddity (by far my favourite). It was originally released in 1969, you should try to see the video to that. Basically the same song but without the signature use of the Stylophone! Just unique.

You have SO much to discover with Bowie! One of the true giants of modern popular music and one of the most innovative and influential music artists of all-time! When it comes to influence, probably only The Beatles rank higher than Bowie! An incredible artist, who'd change his stage persona every few years, to match his changes in musical style. So much incredible music, he's a hero and an icon to the disenfranchised and marginalised, to freaks, rebels and minorities. Through his art alone, he probably did more to advance the cause of lgbtq equality than most activist organisations. An incredibly intelligent, funny and thoughtful man, yet very private at the same time. We will never see his like again. His death caused shockwaves around the World. It was headline news and World leaders queued up to praise him, including both President Obama and the Pope. The British Parliament even paused official business to laud him and pay their respects. He's sorely missed!

I remember when Space Oddity was first played on Radio 1 (in the UK). At that time Radio 1 was broadcast on 247m AM, so coupled with the fact that most of us were listening on tinny sounding transistor radios, it didn't sound anything like this. Mono record players were still prevalent in most teens bedrooms, so we didn't get to hear any of the stereo effects on the single either. For those whose parents had a stereo music centre, which were the rage then, you could get to hear the album version in stereo when they were out.

Chris was a Commander on the International Space Station (ISS) and performed a cover in (real) space, -outside of our earth! So if he is singing "here i'm floating in a tin pin, far away from home" he is actually is floating in a tin pin far away from home! < and that is amazing, 'cause it's true! :-) Worth to check it out as it's not a video-trick creating a space-scene effect as he is in space ...^^+gg

There is an earlier version of this song when it was first released with a very low budget yet creative video (you have to remember videos were not being made in the 60's-70's, only the occasional promo for a song from an already established group). Also you can find an earlier performance of him doing this live on a European TV show, pre-Ziggy. My fave live filmed performance of this is his last "Ziggy" extravaganza from the Midnight Special Show that he called "The 1980 Floor Show" (Bowie was always good for a pun), I will leave a link for anyone interested. He is mesmerizing in it, IMHO.

Oh, yes, some David Bowie finally! Thanks Dereck! There isn’t enough David Bowie’s songs on your channel. 😉 Could I hope for more in the future?

You should check Klaus Nomi "The Cold Song"... David Bowie liked him and he even performed with him... And talking about german music, Bowie was also an early fan on Kraftwerk...

It reminds me when I discover Bowie when I was 20. It was the beginning of a new world. It leads me to new music, new novelist, new movies etc… Bowie is my god and I am so happy I had the chance to see him once in concert. He was just amazing.
So many great songs…. Among the not that famous one you can try Joe the Lion or Blackout, the Beauty and the beast. Just give energy !

The keyboards are courtesy of the legendary (and very young) Rick Wakeman who did the whole thing in one take. Bowie offered him a gig with the Spiders from Mars on the same day he joined Yes.
