John was an amazing bass player and songwriter. I can understand his retirement after Freddie Mercury died. He said it just didn’t feel right without Freddie singing in Queen. I’m so glad I got to see Queen before Freddie was gone too soon.
Vanilla Ice didn’t sample that riff, he flat out stole it and thought he’d get away with it. He didn’t. Queen and David Bowie sued his arse, and rightly so. On piano is Spike Edney, he’s still touring with Queen and Adam Lambert, after all these years, would you believe? We saw them in February last year, before Covid luckily . In 1982 Fred Mandel joined them to do piano, so Freddie had more freedom around the stage, and a couple of years after that, was replaced by Spike. This Wembley concert, particularly the Saturday night one (the first was on Friday night) is absolutely phenomenal, you could throw a pin at the set list and it wouldn’t matter which song it lands on, it would be incredible. My picks though are Now I’m Here, One Vision, Love of My Life, Another One Bites the Dust and Who Wants to Live Forever.
no, morgan fisher was with them in 1982, i saw them in edinburgh on june 2nd, fred mandel did'nt join them until he played on the works album which came out in the uk in jan 84
David didn't write the bass line. John Deacon wrote the bass line. In fact, John had been playing the bass riff all day but forgot it after Queen and David Bowie went out to dinner (pizza and beer). Luckily, Roger remembered the riff. BTW - Roger didn't like singing Under Pressure. Roger's voice is high but this song was written for David whose voice was low (Freddie could sing both high and low). Roger had to strain to sing some of the notes.
They actually all went out for pizza. When they got back, it was Roger who remembered John’s bass line well enough for John to remember it again. Maybe Roger regretted that a little, but I can’t imagine the world without this song in it. So, props to the rhythm section!
@@heatherqualy9143 Actually, he said he said that "Under Pressure" is one, if not his favorite, Queen song but it was written for David Bowie whose voice was deeper than Roger's and it was difficult for him to sing it.
I love your reactions!! Yes, Vanilla Ice stole it from Queen & Bowie. Vanilla got sued & lost (AHHH Poor Ice Ice Baby). Anyway, it’s a sore spot with Queen fans! The official video is fantastic with Queen & David Bowie vocals. It’s my email ringtone. Mega collab with a couple legends!! I love Freddie’s scatting!!! 😁
I am a Queen encyclopedia!! Love what your doing!! You HAVE to watch the ENTIRE CONCERT. He was sick and HE KNEW this was his last live show. HE LEAVES IT ALLLLLL ON THE STAGE!!!!!
I was there that that day. I've been to many gigs over the years but Wembley 12th July 1986 was the best, a totally unforgetable day. First was INXS then The Alarm, Status Quo and Queen came on at about 8pm ish. The keyboard is by Spike Edney who did a lot with Queen and still does with Brian and Roger.
Freddie did have an incredible ear and love of all kinds of music. All the members of Queen were so multitalented. Freddie Mercury was a force of nature. Thanks.
Yes, Vanilla Ice used this and tried to say it was his own and so did not owe Bowie or Queen credit. Big reason he failed. He was talented, but you just don't steal someone else's rifts and claim you added a "ching" and now it's yours. Ummm, no.
If you want to know how to get 100,000 people into your back pocket, this is exactly how to do it. I can't believe this year represents 30 years since we lost the great man himself. There never was anyone like our Freddie and there never will be again. What he's doing with the crowd before the song starts, is warming up and loosening his vocal chords whilst at the same time engaging his adoring fans. It's pure genius. God we still miss him so much but thank God, he left us with an amazing musical legacy. God rest his dear soul.
You should react to Exercises in free love which is just Freddie. Its tones only no words. It was the B side to Freddie's The great Pretender...originally written by the Platters. The song was also a demo for his collaboration with Famous opera Soprano Montserrat Caballe who he did an Opera album with. Check out Barcelona, How can I go on / guide me home and The Golden Boy.
Queen met up with David Bowie in Switzerland, where David had a house. They both wrote their parts separately at the studios in Switzerland, after dinner. Actually it was the drummer who came up with the concept of Under Pressure. Deacon gave Bowie years later the credit for the bass line but Bowie says it was Deacon. Bowie's part is all over it. Queen and Bowie recorded this in one night . Unfortunately they never performed this together. There is a video merging this with a tribute concert done by Bowie and Annie Lennox, where they merged Bowie and Freddie together. Vanilla Ice were sued and ordered to pay up. Years later Brian Mae said life was too short to hold grudges. Vanilla Ice paid up but we're still allowed to use the bass line ,they added one note. You can't beat it. .
To only echo what might have been posted earlier, what Freddie was doing earlier was simple warm-ups or vocalizing with the crowd. He did it memorably during the Live Aid set when In-between Radio Ga Ga and Hammer To Fall; remember the “Ay-ohs”.
it’s such an amazing song!! I love Roger’s vocals on it, he always sang with Freddie in most songs, sometimes he would even fill in for him when he would be too tired, he has an amazing, very powerful voice! You should check out I’m In Love With My Car Live at Montreal 1981, Roger lead sings it and plays the drums at the same time!
Ofcourse Freddie is always No. 1, & adore all the other guys. I especially like Roger Taylor. As well as his amazing playing of drums is his incredible voice too. All brilliant!!!!
David Bowie hung out with the band while they were recording their Hot Space album. They decided to jam together one night, each band member and Bowie trying to impress each other, eventually leading to this song. Bowie also contributed background vocals on the Deacon/Mercury track Cool Cat (one of the most underrated Queen songs) but Bowie wasn't satisfied with the final product, leading to a delay of the release of the final album. The Bowie Cool Cat demo is available online-- interesting though I probably prefer the album version.
They weren't hanging out together. David just happened to be in town at the same time and heard Queen were too and went down to the studios to see them and that's how they ended up jamming together
Roger is singing most of David Bowies parts. David and Freddie are brilliant in this song. Well worth listening to the concert version at some time - it's fantastic.

Queen + Adam Lambert Days of Our Lives Tokyo '14 (Roger's son plays the drums on it) Queen + Adam Lambert Who Wants To Live Forever Isle of Wight '14 (Adam sings - Freddie's version from Wembley '86 is awesome as well.)
Do listen to the studio version of this too - sadly there is no live version with both Freddie and Bowie... But Freddie has some unbelievable high notes in the studio version. When Queen did this live, Freddie and Roger basically had to divide Bowie's parts between themselves. The best part of this video is the call-and-response at the beginning; as far as live performances of Under Pressure go, the 1981 Montreal one is even better. :)

Queen "Under Pressure" 1981 Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby" 1990 Vanilla Ice ruined is career fight in the Courts saying that was his song, and the bass line was a coincidence. He lose it. It was simple to understand Vanilla's point of view. Queen in 1981 was an Hard Rock Band (Old extinguish Heavy Metal Category), as so, "no body" listening to Heavy Metal Music in that time. So he thought that no body wouldn't recognise this line bass, he didn’t even bother to modify some things even leaving the sound of the piano. \m/
