- Stockpile Volume Calculations
Using drones to measure stockpiles is quickly becoming a go-to surveying workflow for earthwork sites around the world.
Construction sites also use drones to survey their sites more quickly. The 3D maps generated from those flights collect actionable data, including stockpile volume calculations.
✔ Quicker & safer than conventional methods
✔ Cost effective
✔ Reduce risk
✔ Actionable data
✔ Reduce costly write-offs

What program did you use? DRONE DEPLOY or WebODM?
It doesn't look like Dronedeploy
Data was processed using Agisoft Metashape. Data cleaning and volumes were done in Virtual Surveyor.
VS looks like a cost-effective alternative to DD. Did you use any GCPs in your project?
VS has many more features than DD. We always use GCP's and checkpoints to validate accuracy of data.
Do you charge a flat fee for the job on something like this? Or do you charge an hourly rate for the work?
This will depend on both you and the client. This is a repeat job so a fee per visit was agreed. Don't forget to cater for your travel, office time and hardware / software costs. New stockpile video coming shortly!
How long to get the volume calculation? is it in hours, days or what? Thanks
For smaller sites we can usually collect and process the data, delivering a report in the same day.
Otherwise it's around 48 hours but we will discuss this with the client and work to their requirements. The bonus is, we can cover the whole site, not just one stockpile. Thanks for watching 🙌🏻
@@droneworksuk okay pretty fast.. thx for the response
Please send to me this program 🙏
Hi! What software and drone model is this?
Hi. Data was processed using Agisoft Metashape. Data cleaning and volumes were done in Virtual Surveyor.
Thanks for watching 👍
@@droneworksuk thank you
No problem. Virtual Surveyor is a really useful tool to bridge the gap between drone data and CAD, lots of tutorials on their RUclips channel too!
@VirtualSurveyor
@@droneworksuk will look into that. Really appreciate your help. Thanks 😊
so how accurate is this?
The data itself has an RMSE of 3cm, using GCP, check points and RTK drone, but the volume calculations are generally within 3% of laser scan or total station, whilst being much quicker and safer.
Accuracy of the volume does tend to depend on the shape of the heap, but always within the required tolerances for material management.
