he really is a national treasure, brilliant in everything he's ever been in. from watching him play Mr bean when I was younger to Blackadder when I was older. He and other great comedians like Stephen fry and rik mayall make me feel very proud to be British
Part of it comes from having a very slight stutter ... which made him create ... "a_bibble" and such to be able to say these things. There is a documentary about Blackadder where he talks about this.
Yep, it is partly a side-effect of being schooled around a speech impediment, though, that you learn to pronounce things very correctly. Jeremy Brett, the most famous Sherlock Holmes, had a wonderfully honed posh accent and great enunciation with rolling 'R's that he learned through elocution lessons to counter a speech impediment when he was younger.
I was shocked when I first learned he was from Durham, which is the north of England, and the accent there is as far from Queen's English as you can get :P
I was always amazed at the last episode myself, that sudden turn to the reality of war must be one of the best moments ever on television. And it's nice to hear that he felt it too. Great man.
He's popular internationally because most of his comedy doesn't use any language but mostly visual so there is nothing lost in translation because there is nothing TO translate!
Rowan Atkinson is indeed big on visual comedy. His early work in university centered around sketches with very few lines, or with a simple script accompanied with a funny character. And there's the musical mimes, where all he really do is sit alone on stage and mime playing musical instruments. The best sketch he did on "Not the 9 o clock New" was arguably "The man who walked into a tree", and that was a minute long sketch with absolutely no lines. He even made a video documentary about physical comedy called "Laughing Matters", which doubled as a lecture on how to do visual comedy. Of course, his role as Blackadder should not be forgotten. But barring the first series, Blackadder's script was the work of the genius of Richard Curtis and Ben Elton, while Rowan more or less had the role of an actor/performer who reads the scripts. Physical comedy might be simplistic, usually slapstick and light-hearted. But due to that, it's also far-reaching, easily accessible and understandable, and enjoyed at an instinctual level. And that is the appeal of Mr Bean.
"Who would notice another madman around here"... One of the most poignant lines in the history of television and delivered perfectly by an insanely underrated actor.
His voice is so soothing and really nice to listen to. There are only a few who are this articulate. Hopefully he'll do a reboot of one of his characters very soon!!
He's a very very good actor! In his life outside of Mr Bean Rowans quite a posh/upper class man (not in a snobby way)! So that just shows how well he brought this character to life!! What a legend ❤️
Rowan Atkinson is an incredible actor and also a quite charismatic person , I'm 30 years old, Mr. Bean was a remarkable show during my childhood in the 90's, very popular here in Brazil on Sundays night, besides this is a great video to improve my english listening skills... Thank you
This guy is such a comedy hero to me and Blackadder such a great example of the astonishing luck I've had to be a Brit growing up with this rich and unique comedy heritage... that I think I'm doing that seizure face us men do when we're trying to avoid crying.
Mr Atkinson thank you and the cohort of others for making life so enjoyable, and thought provoking lines such as ..... "who would notice another mad man around here" just pure gold.
The interviewer is called Michael Parkinson to anyone who's asking. One of the worlds greatest and long lasting interviewers. Rowan Atkinson is a comedy legend, and also a very nice person it seems.
"There is no doubt that the darker, the more serious the backdrop into which you set your comedy, sometimes the brighter your little sparks of comedy are set out in sharp relief against it" Such an intellectual icon
Well I live in Africa *Mozambique( and he is an absolute miracle, especially for his mimic work it is just INCREDIBLE! His act on how to act when paying your bill at the restaurant is possibly the best act I have seen in my life!
How nice to hear someone speak so eloquently and intelligently. A tad better than TOWIE, or some such idiotic construct which seems to revel in; and indeed glorify their ignorance.
I thought, when ITV cast Rowan as French detective Maigret that they made a big mistake. How wrong was I !! He is perfect for the role & shows what a subtle yet brilliant actor he is. Despite being best known as Blackaddder/Mr Bean his Maigret is so good that you leave the thoughts of his other characters behind.
Rowan, you dont know me but I know you. I am a 23 yr old physician in training and I have been going through hell these past few months. The only thing that's leading me through these hard times is you. Watching Mr Bean as a kid and now has made me a very happy person cuz u always put a smile on me...even in the toughest situations. You are great. Thank you Sir.
A wonderful talent and a genuinely nice man. His energy is fabulous and his comic timing is exceptional. I enjoy him on Mr Bean and Blackadder is also great for those who've not seen it. The CBE decoration was well-deserved Keep up the good work Mr Atkinson ❤ 😊
I cried when blackadder died. It wasn't one man dying, but the lineage of 500 years since the first blackadder and a character that provided a humourous backdrop to my childhood. It was a profoundly sad moment.
I lived in quite an isolated tribal village on the Burmese border with Thailand for 6 months a few years ago teaching. They had never heard of David Beckham but loooooved Mr. Bean! :)
I have only just seen this interview, on July 19/2022. Rowan Atkinson is a brilliant actor. His work on Blackadder, Mr. Bean and The Thin Blue Line are all magnificent. I also love the character of Baldrick, played by Tony Robinson. Superb actors and superb characters. Thank you for the laughs.
Blackadder goes forth is still (in my humble opinion anyway) the funniest comedy ever written. And the last scene when they go over the top is one of the most poignant pieces of television in history. Captures the absurdity and horror of the first world war beautifully. Brings a tear to my eye everytime I watch it.
Mr. bean, you had been my child hood entertainer. but now I'm seeing you as rowan Atkinson. you're a legend sir. no other comedian can match your skill. #the legend
Knighthoods mean jack shit these days. Jimmy Saville had a knighthood. My useless mp has a knighthood. Devaluation of knighthood massively. Should be called a shitehood.
final Blackadder episode got me crying! How is that possible. I believe it was the shock from seeing such vivid characters - who were built from the best humour I ever saw & heard - die.
That's simply because you've grown accustomed to him not speaking at all, dear. Take Beckham for example... Now that's a lad with a contradicting voice.
I loved Mr Bean the first time I ever saw him. Since then I have watched the complete series of Blackadder and absolutely loved it. And I also love Mr Atkinson's other work. He is just funny and that's that. 😊
All the Americans can't believe he speaks. Brits grew up MAINLY hearing him speak by way of insulting Baldrick. And we tended to not really watch much Mr Bean.
Please do yourself a favour and watch seasons 2-4 of Blackadder. The greatest British sitcom of the 1980s. (Season 1 is a bit of a misfire; they hadn't got the formula right.)
The last bit on the last sketch of the series as so heart-wrenching. Took me a long time to watch it a second time. I remember somewhere I heard that the image of the field of poppies was found and rushed down and added at the last moment. - That had to be the very best ending of anything in film - ever. So many millions of school children were taught to recite In Flanders Fields by heart. Tear-jerker moment. war sucks
The big misnomer about Mr Atkinson is that he’s going to make you laugh off camera as much as he does on. Where as he’s highly intelligent & engages in intellectual conversations & topics very deeply. Something you don’t really find in most comedians today- with the exception of the brilliant - Late Robin Williams.
Made me and my father laugh our heads of with very intelligent comedy and now my cambodian wife and my daughter love him for Mr. Bean on the other side of the world. Truly a comedy genius and a national treasure, surprised he has not been knighted like David Jason, when you make people laugh in tough times, it's utterly priceless. Great guy
Nabarun Roy I think that Max Dmytriyev has a point. Back in 2007 don't think RUclips supported HD uploads. If the BBC were to upload the video - it will be both widescreen and HD.
One of the greatest comic Geniuses of all time. Black Adder was bloody amazing, 3rd and 4th series will always be my favourite. Good luck everyone, for me was the best Tv episode I’ve ever seen.
Rowan Atkinson is a living legend, so intelligent and intriguing. Definitely deserves the CBE decoration.
And he drives a Mclaren f1

Jose Hernandez Totally Lool ;D
Hahaha chain sou

You should look up all of the Blackadders, Mr. Bean isn't even in the same league.
Still can't accept the fact he has an extremely posh and diplomatic accent :P
Part of it comes from having a very slight stutter ... which made him create ... "a_bibble" and such to be able to say these things. There is a documentary about Blackadder where he talks about this.
He still has a posh accent naturally, and you can't take that away from him
Yep, it is partly a side-effect of being schooled around a speech impediment, though, that you learn to pronounce things very correctly.
Bollthorn he’s upper middle class and was educated at reasonably posh schools though, unlikely to have the local accent.
The last five minutes of Blackadder 4 was one of the most brilliant scenes in history.
It sure was. I cried as a kid.
Yes. Yes it is.
Totally agree, still for me the greatest TV episode ever
The warmongers certainly don’t like it that’s for sure
I was always amazed at the last episode myself, that sudden turn to the reality of war must be one of the best moments ever on television. And it's nice to hear that he felt it too. Great man.
He has such a beautiful speaking voice. Lovely, rich, well-spoken sound.
He's popular internationally because most of his comedy doesn't use any language but mostly visual so there is nothing lost in translation because there is nothing TO translate!
Indeed
+Georgie Thumbs Well - it has to be internationally and crossculturally funny. There is that little thing.
thanks for the observation, you are absolutely useless
I vastly prefer Blackadder to Mr. Bean ... and I am german.

A relic of a bygone age. Mr. Atkinson is one of the few remaining television geniuses.
i wouldn't call him a relic LOL he's a living, breathing human being. But yea agreed, genius indeed.
He is a very clever man. I love listening to him. He is so interesting personality.

I'm sure that final scene, urged children to ask 'oh, is that what the poppies are for,' poignant and very clever...
Hello Darling!
Wow, he talks a LOT! :) He contrasts so much with Mr. Bean
Well it'd be a very cruel series if Mr. Bean were a docusoap!
It's called acting.
Patrick Joseph Klocek I like Mr Bean, but Blackadder I LOVE. A recommendation for anyone who hasn't already, watch it!
I love watching Mr.Bean when I'm feeling down I watch it and I start to laugh.
The thin blue line, excellent series. All brilliant actors in it.
Mr. bean, you had been my child hood entertainer. but now I'm seeing you as rowan Atkinson. you're a legend sir. no other comedian can match your skill.

Why he isn`t knighted Sir Rowan Atkinson, I do not understand. Ironically Baldric(Tony Robinson) has...
+christian hartviksen He turned down a knighthood but he does have a CBE.
"Technically" he should become King Blackadder ... I saw it on a "documentary" once.
Tony Robinson’s was for services because he is anarcheologist
Knighthoods mean jack shit these days. Jimmy Saville had a knighthood. My useless mp has a knighthood. Devaluation of knighthood massively. Should be called a shitehood.
Why should someone's success be measured by a knighthood?
Love Mr Bean!
He really is intelligent and he can really ...talk...:D How cool is that!! :D
final Blackadder episode got me crying! How is that possible. I believe it was the shock from seeing such vivid characters - who were built from the best humour I ever saw & heard - die.
A great British comedian!
Every time I watch black adder I always think they r calling him Mr bean when they say Mr B.
Hats off to this man
Please thumbs up those who came here just to hear his voice... it’s incredible I could listen to this guy all day... love you bean❤️

What diction, the man can speak ! Would love if he made a guest appearance on House.

right. Mr. bean doesn't give you the impression that this guy has biritsh manner of speaking

Rowan atkinson is actually a really normal man ..
Yeah whatever you say we will like it Mr. Bean
hes so well spoken
I love Rowan Atkinson 💖 so much. Legend. Iconic. Original. Historical.
I agree and have been hauled through tough times via this man's fantastic humour
He has a masters degree in electronic engineering. Educated in oxford university. Probably one of the greatest comedians of all time.

Mr. Bean é um grande comediante, unico, inconfundível e genial...
What a lovely guy always liked him ☺️🤗😘❤️💞💕 xxxx
he's amazing! and he's SOOOO shy and quiet in real life, i've met him! sooooo lucky i couldn't believe it!
Wow this is how Mr. Bean actually talks
Please do yourself a favour and watch seasons 2-4 of Blackadder. The greatest British sitcom of the 1980s. (Season 1 is a bit of a misfire; they hadn't got the formula right.)

Yes....To you, Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn't it?
Mr. Bean is an another unique character as Charlie Chaplin..
SAM Charlie Chaplin isn't a character, he's a real person.
