Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 5 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming background I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15 We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to were we are now. We took on a 500 acre hill farm in 2019 currently 5 years into the tenancy.

Barton wool website looks great! How kind of Heather Barton to give the children such lovely hats. I am stocked up on wool at the moment but I will definitely look at their wool when i need some more!

Hi Sam and family, so glad you share your day's on the farm . It was so nice to see you and Oliver at the show . I love the old country shows ,we went to one in a village hall the other week . It had flower arrangements, jams and pickles, cakes and novelty vertebral animals. That childern had made , A dog show on the green at the back of the hall . The boiler suit looks great. It will keep normal clothes clean on farm work tasks.
It's interesting to see the various shows farmers go to. Lots to spend money on...if you have money.

Get a pod put in there Sam. You'll rake it in. We converted two little buildings and rent them out on air bnb. Bit of work keeping them clean but worth it. It'll go a long way to paying the rent👌
@benwilliams8261 would love to do that! Convert a shed / old building if we owned it there's no stopping me 🤣 I might ask if I can put a pod/shepherds hut and try it no harm!
@@Sam-shutt definitely worth trying. I can't believe how much people go on holiday. I thought holidays were just something people did every ten years but nope! We're busy all year round with it. Very best of luck with it. You're in a perfect location for holiday pods👌

Great video tonight, I miss being able to get to the shows and markets nowadays and watching yourtrips out and daily working on the farm is great. Brought back memories of converting our old byres and barns. Hope the boss got home okay. Btw your definitely worth more than the baler and far better looking. Priceless. x

Glad to see you having some time out at the show. We've just been to our local county show and hopefully will be going to the ploughing match and country show in a few weeks. They are great for a day out 😊

Hi SAM an OLIVER, machinery costs absolutely crazy, shows true costs in food production plus all your hard labour ,yet train drivers on £72,000 /year and you both working 80 hours /week probably earning £5 /hour, what a SAD world . Once again good luck keeping farming. Your holiday POD excellent idea ,i can come an stay and see the North, as i am way down in Devon.

a diversification idea..........buy a couple of those pods and stick them up top of those hills of yours.......bring you in a nice few bob. lots of shiny new kit at the show........if only there was some money to be made out of farming......eh

Be careful with your new feeding system . I watch the flying fergi on you tube and they had problems like yours feeding down a narrow feed passage. The cattle putting there head through at feeding time he court one with the tractor tyre . Not ideal . Just because it was narrow passage.
@@abbiejones4222 can't get down the narrow passage with anything but loads. But we feeding from the side so it's safter
I think the sheep trailer need to have 3 axles. I know more money.
