    Been at plant hire with commercial customers. My policy has been , send inv, next month send statement, 14 days after that, send final demand with request for payment within 7 days. After that please don't contact me, my solicitor s details are,,,,, they will commence collection procedures and will be adding their costs plus collection fees. Over 25 years in business, only one non payment. It isn't personal ,it's business, simple as.

    I knew a contractor in cork who had a client who would only pay his silage bill the following year when the next cut was made. The contractor got sick of this but went and mowed the farmers field but then never returned to pick it up. The farmer rang him and the contractor explained that he needed to be paid for last year's and this year's before he would bring the cut grass in. The farmer tried to get other contractors to finish it but none would touch the job. He had to go back, pay the guy for last year and this year to get his silage in the pit.
    As you probably guessed that was the last year the contractor worked for him

Can be a lot of expense to carry for the year. I have to travel this year for the work. From cloughan, to rathdowney to caherconlish in a tractor is a job in itself

If you don’t get it go the solicitor direction, either way you won’t be working for him again. You can’t absorb even €1k hit when the numbers are so tight on that machine. Keep up the good work.

    By not charging interest on the money that man owes you, you're effectively paying him to hold your money. Now, it's not much, but you do have a right to reclaim your costs. You have to weigh that against whether doing that damages other relationships, but you'll know about that from contracting generally.

    • @TerriblyNice_Not
      @TerriblyNice_Not 3 месяца назад

      I would also say, you could probably do worse than investing in an e-invoicing system which would also do your books for you too. There are lots of cheap and effective software out there that are pretty straightforward - even like a Shopify type thing which would handle payments and invoicing on the front end, and book keeping on the back. This would keep all invoicing up to date, and avoid any problems with finding numbers, etc.

    Why did yhe self feed silage pits go out of fashion? From initial thoughts, its a hell of a saving on diesel and time over winter. But there are lots of things that would need to be done to get it right, including sloping floor away from the face, long pit face, checking of the fence to make sure it is live and damgerous. Whats your thoughts Phil?

    Hi Phil, watching the video's for years now but don't normally comment on any, but that not getting paid makes my blood boil, could you try the small claims court, it's done through your local council i think and you don't need a solicitor, it covers claims up to €2,000 .

    • @user-qj2ge5hz4d
      @user-qj2ge5hz4d 3 месяца назад +2

      You can't use the small claims court to recover money owed.
      Best thing that farmer Phil can do is make contact with farmers that owe him money, ask them outright if there's a problem in paying , offer them monthly repayments to repay debt over 12 months. In reality if you are taking on work with that machine from someone that you haven't worked for before you should demand payment on the headland when the work is complete, have the invoice book in the tractor with you. If a cheque bounces at least you can take that to court.. It's hard to stay in business if you give credit to someone without doing background checks.

    First rule doing contracting is issue invoice 10 to 14 days I send a message one month after invoice date if it’s for a large farm/ company. In general I carry the invoice book in the tractor hand it to them when the job is complete if any one is offended by my policy they can get someone else. I started in 1994 after leaving College with a old Ursus and am owed nothing.

    Now from a pure financial perspective I would encourage you to seek payment for work done it’s just fairness but then as a farmer you know the life better than anyone. The chances are there is reason that payment is delayed. Pride can get in the way but also you’re a good man so I find that the lack of payment is just not on without discussing it with you. Anyway you can name ans shame so to speak, but maybe father is best to remind the other fella that his actions are out of order as he has a way about him that really does make you think. Anyway not sure how swift the Irish courts work and the time and cost to recover money but it’s always an option. You’re the better man but don’t let your kindest be mistaken! You always could go drop off a reminder invoice with a few ton and stones to ensure the wind doesn’t blow it out the postbox! You’re a good man, let’s hope they do the right thing!

    Blimey what an admission! Basically not having any customer details of who you do work for. I couldn't operate my business on that basis because nobody pay knowing I don't have their address, contact number, email address and job details. That doesn't mean I am not owed money because I am, but I know where to send reminders and warning letters which to be fair is rare. New customers get no credit existing customers seven days. Times are very tricky. Anyone wanting 90day terms, sure but the job price increases dramatically if I have to give 90days credit for one job. My mind is boggled at your very relaxed business practice.

    • @JonDingle

      Completely irrelevant if there isn't an invoice because an invoice is a legal document that must have details on it. It is extremely difficult to prove a debt UNLESS, the defendant fails to respond to any written communications citing the debt. If the defendant denies the debt, the case is dead. I gave a guy £100 here in the UK for some parts and he never delivered, eventually I won in court because of his failure to deny the debt. You see, I have the T shirt and I am in business too as self employed and with a limited company.Also, IF the debt here in the UK is not billed within six months of the work being done, there is no recourse for the contractor.

    Phil, in both Business and Personal, remember that people will only treat you the way you allow them to treat you.
    Next time you deal with a difficult person - set clear boundaries and make clear your rules for engagement.

    I'd put a timber board under all them tyres on machines that you parked. The milled peat on the floor is acidic which is not good for the life of the tyres.

    It doesn't matter what game your at you'll always find bad payers.
    1 you have his email send him a reminder if that doesn't work after a week go and knock on the door and talk to him face to face. And if that doesn't work then take legal action. And if that doesn't work then just tip a couple of loads of stones or shit at his front door.
    But 🤞 you get your money it's not a nice feeling when you work for free.

      He’s in partnership with Samaz from the mowers came hence the tour of the factory, ploughing match promoting and so on. Free machines to promote and the word demo just dilutes it. Fair play to him as it helps them get through work but i think he should be careful in how he declares it. That’s the retired accountant in me speaking.

    We do a little bit of contract work for farmers, and I can honestly say that this year has been the hardest year so far to collect money. Everyone's overheads are going up every day, and some folks just don't know how to budget for anything. 9 out of 10 jobs, no bother. The tenth job, bloody nightmare. Spoils the hole effort. Because it always seems to be the time you have a breakdown of the oli tanks have just been filled.

    Its before you do a job money needs to be talked about. Different if working for a neighbour or some 1 ye have done all their work for years. But when taking 1 off jobs off strangers or not your clients. You need to tell them before you arrive at their field as in when they ring you. That its so much an hr and iv to be paid leaving the field. Bein working for my self for 20 years. You still may meet a bolloks who will dissappear. But in general if you tell them straight out you need to be paid on the day they will. Or they wont hire you. They will ring someone else hoping they will do the job and send an envoice after they can ignore till the perfect time comes which never does. You need to call to that man tomoro you shudnt have mentioned it here. Single payment was made this week you shud have had that in mind and called to him Thursday.

    1000 or more I would be speaking to bailiffs or a solicitor it might cost you 500 (hopefully less) for them to send a court letter or give a knock on the door but you will get get some if not all of the money back. Saying that as I seen what my father went through in the 90s and the occasional person owing 1000 here 1000 there soon adds up at the end of the year. And you can't send round the heavies these days like you could back then
