I love this flag. When you're torching the wood, it's a great idea to torch both sides (face and rear). The reason for this is that you're drying out one side of the board, while leaving the other side with a higher moisture content, which could cause warping. It may or may not even happen at all, but I think the extra time spent torching the back side of the stripes is just good insurance.
If I wanted to make one can you tell me the things that I need. Or can u make one for me. I wanted to make out. For about 30 coins. I think the one you made was kind of too big. Will u give me all supplies that’s I need to buy pls. Or just tell me how much for u to make it. Thanks. Anna
Hi I just got one pretty similar for my retirement on wednesday. Mine was not sealed and i would like to put some kind of sealant or epoxy on it. What is the best stuff to use to put a shine on it and seal it. Thanks in advance.
How did you get the city and county ems challenge coin? Just curious. My wife and I work for honolulu ems. I'm making this flag coin holder for her to display in her office. Thanks for the idea
I was working the Secret Service check point during Obama's vacation one year and one day the EMS guys parked next to us and hung out. So we ended up trading.
Do u sell the coin flag and could you make a smaller one maybe 2x3.5 don’t have ton of room to hang something that big in man cave but would love a new way to display my coins
Love this! I took a crack at building a few. I’m having issues with the spray finish though. I have a Husky syphon sprayer and I used semi gloss polyurethane diluted with mineral spirits. The top and bottom stripe and the shelves never seem to get enough of the clear coat. The raw/burned wood never seems to hold the finish well either. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?
I recommend just using a nice spray lacquer without any kind of dilution. It's more than enough protection for it and produces a very nice finish. When you go to spray it, tighten up the sprayer's pattern and go at the coin shelves at an angle from above and below the shelf for a couple passes. Then spread the spray pattern out to about 2-3 stripes worth and spray the flag from straight on. This should give you an amazing finish and adequate coverage. I will usually do about 4 coats.
Also, before spraying confirm with the customer where they plan to hang it. That way if they plan to hang it outside you can use spar urethane for better protection.
I do sell these. I am currently building my new shop though so I am not taking orders. Please check out my facebook.com/explosivewoodworks to keep up to date of when I start taking orders again.
I used Varathane "Barn Red" and and Minwax Clear Tint with the blue additive. You have to have the tint mixed at the paint counter at home depot or Lowes.
Love this. Thanks for sharing with everyone, I might tackle this one for my brother-in-law he would love something like this. Thanks again

Your very welcome you know I have a RUclips also!
Did you use the router to cut the coin slot for the coin holder?
Yes. I used my router table. I think a 3/8" straight bit.
How heavy is it
Do you have plans for this coin holder? This is an amazing idea, and I would like to make one for a friend of mine that is retiring.
I do not. Sorry.
Could you include dimensions and material list?
Nice work man! Where'd the star cut outs come from?
Thanks! "All This Wood" on Etsy.
How much did that weigh? Looks like it ended up on the heavieer side
These are pretty stout flags. Not like the ones using only 3/4" material. If I had to guess... Maybe 50-60lbs?

Do you have the dimensions for the union and star placement by chance? Beautiful build!!!
If you google "US Flag Dimensions" you'll find multiple sites that give the ratios for you to use based on the overall size you want the flag to be.

I just read on another site that polyurethane is pretty good
Minwax polyurethane spray is really good
Polyurethane or spray lacquer will be fine.
Great video! Have the stars been treated in any way before you glue and scorch them?
Thank you! No I didn't treat them at all. If you watch my newer video I go into more detail on how I build them.
