Poles are very tolerant but are not blind to differences. That's why Polish make fun of everybody, including (or maybe even: mostly) of themselves. Because "if you can laugh at your differences you're one of us". Kind of "no b.s. approach".

13 posterunek (13th precinct ) it's hilarious comedy, but i'm afraid that many jokes will be not understandable only for those aware of polish culture, history. Nerveless, Cezary Pazura (that guy who started quarrel) is always pretty funny.

The 13th Precinct is a comedy sitcom from the 1990s. Poland overthrew socialism in the early 1990s and at that time we were a very homogeneous society. Back then, seeing a black person was unusual in Poland and caused curiosity (the vast majority of them were friendly, but a person unaccustomed to it could perceive it as racism). Nowadays, in large cities, almost no attention is paid to it, but in small towns people of other nationalities are still a curiosity, especially for older people. But it is exactly the same, for example, when a white person goes to a less touristy place in Africa, or, for example, to a province in Japan. In general, according to statistics, Poland is one of the safest countries in the world (we have a lower crime rate even than in Canada and much lower than in the USA). This does not mean that there will not be racists and dangerous people in our country, but they are just as dangerous for Poles as for foreigners. Besides, Poles are specific, we can be very cynical and sarcastic... towards our own people. If you meet Poles and at first they are stiff and taciturn, and after some time they start making stupid jokes, it means that you have been recognized as one of their own (you have every right to snap back at them and it is even expected of you, just don't be offended).

You need basic knowledge of Polish language and history to fully appreciate this episode. There are references to Polish history in almost every sentence, also a lot of word play. For example 'White Tower' is a direct translation of the name of the Polish village, 'Whites to White Tower', 'to believe' is a homonym with 'a tower'. Zawisza the black was famous polish knight
