A Very Challenging "Contradiction" in the Gospels: The Mark Series pt 57 (14:1-12)

  • I almost gave up trying to resolve this supposed "contradiction" between Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Was Jesus anointed with oil/perfume once, twice or three times? Is there error in the Gospels about this? This is a rather complicated set of problems that will take time to unpack. In my study this week I searched and searched and could not find a satisfactory answer; and I'm not really ok with half-answers, so I was about to give up on the issue when I set aside all my resources and just worked with the texts themselves. Now I think I understand a very plausible explanation for the differences and similarities in the four Gospels on this issue.
    Today is all about apologetics!
I'll be answering a lot of the following questions.
If Luke is a separate account that happened at a different time and place how do we explain the similarities between his account and those in Mt, Mk and John? Like the other Gospels, Luke records a woman anointing Jesus, using fragrance from an alabaster flask and the name of the home owner being "Simon".
Even if Luke is a separate account we have questions about how John can be harmonized with Matt and Mark. Critics claim that John has this event happening 6 days before Passover while Mark and Matt have it happening 2 days before Passover. They say that John has this happening at the home of Lazarus while Mark and Matt have it happening at the home of Simon the Leper. Yet these three accounts seem too similar to say it happened twice in such a short period of time. This puzzle had me confused for a time, and when I looked up resources from other people who tried to figure out a good solution I found myself bothered even more. The solutions often disregarded obvious challenges! In the end, I think I've figured it out and decided to do a whole video on it to make sure a good resource was out there for those looking to answer the question. I also think we should talk a bit about the anxiety Christians often feel when trying to resolve a supposed contradiction. How do we process that, especially if we simply don't know the answer yet?
This is part 57 of the Mark Series, going verse by verse through the Gospel of Mark. Today we are in chapter 13:32-37.
Feel free to use my videos in your own gatherings as an aid to studying Scripture.

As a lover of knowledge, I come to a point where I'm convinced that unanswered questions are actually beneficial for us Christians in the sense that they humble us, that we don't know everything, and that's why our faith is based on our trust and confidence in Jesus Christ and the Scriptures.
Thank you Ptr. Mike for your dedication to answering these tough questions.

“For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.”
      - Luke 8:17
Whether in this age or in the next, every question, every hidden thing, and all misconceptions shall be revealed. We aren’t always given every answer, so that we don’t lean on our own understanding, nor put confidence in knowledge. Knowledge is good, but not even knowledge of the truth saves, it’s Christ and His grace that saves. God please, always keep praying and don’t lose heart, ❤️

I love your response, I was thinking along the same lines.
We aren't going to know it all it doesn't matter how much scripture we know or the amount of time we have. There's a guy I forgot his name it might be the answer Man or the Bible answer Man I forgot but basically this guy has memorized the whole Bible. That doesn't make him all knowing, hardly. I can look at a math equation and be able to read the numbers and even memorize the numbers but not have the answer to that problem.
I heard it said a long time ago and it always stuck with me. "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care". I believe it's the living word of God we can't study it as a dead artifact.

When I was a kid, I remember going to people’s houses and if an old lady lived there, she would put oil on our foreheads with the sign of a cross.

Hi! Is there any historical origin of anointing people? I understand it's a religious act but to someone who's outside of the middle eastern culture, it seems obscure that rubbing oil on someone's head is an holy act.
If I don't know anything about Jesus and I saw someone does that, I would immediately assume that it's provocative.

    • @truthseeker4470
      @truthseeker4470 Год назад +5

@陳查理 it's actually a very common Christian act. Nearly every liturgical Church (Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, etc) uses oil in Confirmation. A lot of Charismatic/Pentacostal Churches use it as well, but not tied to a particular "Sarement").
FWIW, the Greek term "Christos" or Hebrew "Mesiach" (Messiah) both mean "Annointed One" in their respective languages. Kings in the Hebrew Bible were also annointed with oil.
So in a way, anointing with oil goes to the very heart of Christian history.

    • @jason7t7
      @jason7t7 Год назад +1

@user-cu1yo7ty5j We use creams and body lotions. Oils are some of the earliest forms of rubs, with various benefits and the anointing is many times simply rubbing or massaging a soothing ointment or oil. Imagine how wonderful it must have been to get that. It seems to be associated with real love and intimacy so much so that God uses it to illustrate his love and grace upon us. Someone may explain it better

*Hi Mike. I actually synchronized the four gospels starting way back in 2013 and when I came to this section with the apparent contradiction, I did indeed come to exactly the same conclusion as you have in this video.*
On top of this, I was finally able (after many setbacks and hindrances) to publish the synchronization earlier this year (2022), it is called: 'GOSPEL SYNC; the greatest story ever told'. _So I guess this book is one Christian resource that agrees with your sound interpretation..._

I recommend EW Bullinger's Appendix 97 "THE UNITY OF THE FOUR GOSPELS."
      It comes with a table.
Excerpt: "After what has been said in Ap. 96, and in the notes to the Structure on p. 1304, it would be out of place to attempt to present anything like a complete "Harmony"; but, in order to show how needless it is to dislocate certain passages in order to bring together similar events and discourses (supposed to be identical, as though nothing the Lord said or did was ever repeated), a condensed outline is presented. It will be noted that there are great events which were never repeated : such as the Mission of the Twelve, the Transfiguration, the Dividing of the Garments, &c. These help us in determining the order and place of other events which, though similar, are not identical.
From the outline given below it will be easy to see how the several accounts of similar events and discourses are distributed in the several Gospels, without violently altering the sequence of verses and chapters, as is done in most so-called "Harmonies".

Something to consider is that the Passover generically consisted of a week long event beginning at the 10th of the month and ending on the morning of the 18th with a Passover feast on the evening of the 14th. If you consider that John is dating from the feast and Matthew and Mark are dating from the beginning of the Passover week it works out perfectly.

And for me it was pride! I like having answers. I like being the friend that people come to for the hard questions. I like being the intellectual heavyweight. If God inspired a Bible that was so clear-cut that a grade school child could fully understand it, why would any of us study it year after year? I suspect it's complex for a reason. passage around and approaching it from many angles, etc, etc, including
hearing selfless teachings like this one. And when I still don't know the

When this came out I'd only been a Christian for about a year and I was definitely still in that place of feeling like I needed to have the answer to everything or my faith had no foundation. The advice at the end of this video really helped me become aware of that problem at the time. I'm happy to notice that, coming here the second time, having actually found the answers to most (but not all!) of the questions, I've indeed learned to stop caring about whether I can defend it and just accept that God's word isn't lying to me. It indeed helps a lot with having God's word in its proper place as authority.
And ironically, as a bonus, not caring about having to defend everything has actually really sped up the process of defending these things, since I can kinda cheat my way to the ending by just taking the right answer straight out of scripture. At that point all the other puzzle pieces usually (not always!) just fall into place immediately.

When I started looking at first century texts like Philo, Josephus, and even the Talmud, I realized that the "scholars" have essentially just been lazy because they found a POSSIBLE answer and they just kept repeating it even though there was basically no evidence for it. There's a much more solid explanation that I'm blown away that no one has posited it. I actually passed it by a friend who has two doctorates I. The area and he initially hand waved me away like, "you don't have the degrees, so you really shouldn't worry about it." After a few weeks he told me, "you know, your solution kept coming back to me, so I looked into it and I'm pretty convinced. The main reason the gospels seem to answer each other is that Luke and Matthew were written to supplement Mark, and John wrote his gospel later as a supplement to the first three. This occurred to answer questions of theology that each gospel writer focused on with John most notably focusing on the divinity of Christ. This also explains why John seems to omit much of the main story, because he need only highlight it for context, since he assumes the reader of listener is familiar with the other gospels.

Also, Jesus told him the Holy Spirit would bring to remembrance everything he taught them. Plus he was an inspired author of Holy Scripture. ... complicated answer from scholars. Matthew got his information from Mark who got his information from Q who got his information from oral tradition. ... Yet no proof of any of this has ever been produced. ... For Mary Magdelaine, the sinner woman that anointed Jesus, please note that she cried and was totally broken and was pouring out her heart to Jesus BEFORE she was forgiven. She was not the only one with Jesus that day, but she was the only one that truly met Jesus. Something wonderful, strange and powerful must have happened to her that she bow downed before Jesus, washed His feet with her tears of repentance, regret, shame and thousands of other emotions, and then pour out her precious oil and anointed Jesus's feet. Those perfume oil are very precious and can worth up to a year's wages (300 dinaris). She poured out her heart, her soul, her love to Jesus BEFORE she was forgiven. She did not do it to ASK for forgiveness, she just did it. And it was then after all that, then Jesus turned to her and told her that her sins are forgiven. Indeed, those who are forgiven more would love more, but it is also very interesting that Mary poured out everything at Jesus' feet, before she heard Jesus' word of forgiveness. And from what we read later, we know that this Mary was the only one that sought after Jesus' body and refused to leave and wept outside Jesus' tomb that Jesus was so drawn by her love, He appeared to Mary before going up heaven to see His Father! So indeed, those who were forgiven much would love much!

I like to think Mary is a lot like us as an example where we sin and sometimes we think or others may think like how the Pharisees did in that we’re not redeemable or not meant to be forgiven because of our sins hold so much weight. But Jesus saves her from being stoned to death and Mary thanks her for saving him and Jesus tells her to not sin no more. So it is through Christ that no matter what sin we do we are forgiven and can come to repentance so we no longer keep committing the same sin.
Correct me if I’m wrong with this

This explanation was very insightful and helpful. One thing I noticed as you were explaining the narrative was that there is a common theme with underlying messages which I think are very important. It is these types of passages that truly provide a depth of understanding when you break through the surface complexities. It is the hard passages that really do yield a lot of knowledge once you understand them. I had a similar time trying to understand 1 pe 4:1 "...whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin" I read lot of commentaries and none of them provided to me any real explanation. It was only after I read Heb 2:18 did I understand that the suffering spoken of in 1 Peter is the denying of our flesh for us which then makes perfect sense, if you are denying satisfying the desires of the flesh which is at war with God, you will not be sinning. Jesus not only suffered physically but also denied his flesh which is a type of suffering too. There is much to learn from this, but by me seeking God and trying to understand this did it then open a door to further understanding and research into this very important topic. Thanks again.

This is three separate events. In Matthew and Mark nothing is known about the woman; she pours the ointment on Jesus head to prepare his body for burial. In Luke the woman is known to be a sinner and she pours the ointment on his feet not his head and washes his feet with her tears. This took place earlier in Jesus's ministry and had nothing to do with preparing his body for burial. This was after John the Baptist sent messengers to Jesus, questioning whether he was the Messiah. In John the woman is Mary the sister of Lazarus and a follower of Jesus, not a sinner. She pours ointment on his feet not his head to prepare his body for burial. This was a different time and place from Mattthew and Mark.

Saint Augustine actually gave the same explanation as you did for the 2 vs 6 days "contradiction," namely that the versions which seem to say that it happened two days before Passover are merely recapitulating (his term) an earlier event later in the story because it fits better with the narrative there.
You seemed not to be aware of the theory before you thought of it, so I guess great minds think alike!

There is also a harmony of events of holy week on page 1866 in my copy of the esv study bible (between mat 21:20 and 21:21)
It lists john as saying when Jesus entered bethany and was annointed(day before triumphal entry), and it lists the mark and mathew accounts as noting the time of the sanhedrins plot at a different time(obviously two days before the feast).
Sometimes it's just nice to know your not the only one in the world that came to a realization, God is good, thanks for sharing this mike, the anecdote about the trial and how someone else bringing in contradictory evidense doesn't change your testimony was really helpful(seen a few crime dramas where that happens) we are called to be ready .
1 peter 3:15 says we are to be ready to give the reason for the hope that we have, thats not quite the same thing as having all the answeres.
Sometimes our testimony is like that of the blind man Jhn 9:25 NIV -
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” (He came to saving faith later when he accepted christ as lord[or maybe demonstrated his faith])
Although God is able, and the word cuts deep.
      2Co 10: 3-5 NIV -
3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Arguments are listed here but also pretensions, we must watch ourselves for pride, making our hearts and minds obedient to christ (earlier in the chapter paul appeals for us to remember the humility and gentleness of christ so this is not an invitation to roast people and put them down but to stand firm in the awesome effectiveness of the sword of the spirit)

Again, the oil was used to mask the smell of a decaying body.

Luke’s was a different anointing all together. The others that coincide with the last supper are one account. He was anointed twice. The second was before the Passover when the whole family would have been in the same house. Each account names someone different being the house they were in because they associated them house different based on tradition and relationships. The earlier anointing possibly changed the heart of the people in the house and was a teaching moment for them. The other account was separate for a different meaning and reason. It was for his burial.

When I looked into them and time and time again the objections didn't hold water, my trust in God's word grew. Now it feels like I've built up a shield of faith to withstand the fiery darts.
