Pastor Mike, this teaching is so needed! I live in the South, and the way that politics (mostly conservative politics but also sometimes liberal politics) dictates Biblical interpretation sometimes feels spiritually oppressive. I’ve started inserting your tag line of “learning to think Biblically about everything” into many of my conversations because so many times we just don’t. A million thanks Pastor. I love what you’re doing.

@@EphLife51516 I can't speak for phillyphi12, but from my experience, American Christians of the Conservative Republican persuasion have a very particular way of interpreting scripture, ignoring verses that don't jive with their political views, and assuming that all Christians share their same political views which can feel oppressive. Liberal Christians are certainly guilty of this as well, but that doesn't somehow make Conservatives' behavior okay. I find myself being treated differently in my church because I do not wholeheartedly support "Trumpism". In my church, there are many who assume that the mainstream Republican positions on Covid-19 are the Christian position. There are many who assume that all Christians vote for Trump. If you don't/didn't, you are considered a Democrat and a non-Christian. It is a false dichotomy as disagreements with the Republican party do not make me a Democrat. American Christians don't realize just how influenced they are by the wider culture. American politics is an idol in the American church today.

We can feed the poor and meet their physical need, but if - in addition - we do not feed them spiritually with the gospel of Jesus Christ, we have failed to love them with the same redemptive love with which God loved us - and we have failed in our mission to make disciples of all nations. That said, I can’t help but think that we - as part of the western church who have been blessed with so much - are falling short of stewarding those resources faithfully to complete the church’s mission not only in our own communities…. but to the ends of the earth. If we couldn’t do it, Jesus wouldn’t have commanded it. Far too often we are so distracted by lesser things, we fail at the most important task that we’ve been given: the great commission.

@@DiggitySlice Hi Dusty. The apostle Peter in his second epistle to the church instructed us that God called us by His own glory and moral excellence (2 Peter 1:2-11).
That glory (essence of God’s nature) and moral excellence was manifest in Jesus Christ who when encountering the crowds, “had compassion on them because they were bewildered and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest-ready fields.” Matthew 9:36-38 NET
We are those workers called to manifest that same glory and moral excellence to a world bewildered and helpless like sheep without a shepherd that they might experience the selfless love of God in Christ Jesus for these - the lost and the least - and become part of His flock. ❤

Great lesson. You’ve given me something to think about with Judas. Bitterness about something or someone in the Church has harmed a lot of people and I had not looked at it like that.
But I’m not sure that I agree that he was casting out demons. Jesus did call the disciples together and gave them the authority to use His Name. The disciples as a group came back and talked about what all had happened. But I think it is an assumption to say that Judas also cast out demons. My guess is that you’re right but I’m not certain and I’m thinking about it.

This humble piece of honest work not only showed your passion and dedication to the Word and your love for our souls, it has the spirit of truth holding it all together and delivering all of these vital facets right into the lives and hearts of the listeners. I know quite a few families that have left the word of faith church at the beginning of covid and some kind of used that to not be part of any fellowship. They have been praying about a church in our rural community that is saturated with the same teachings. There are many things they felt they needed to unlearn. I point them to you all the time. One family in particular hasn't started going back to church because of an elderly family member they take care of and fear of covid. They are very open to fellowship at their home outside now that the weather is good. This may be very helpful.

We aren't lobbying to refuse aid to the poor. We just think there are better avenues that can be taken to accomplish that, rather than making the government responsible for it. Charities/shelters for example. The hang up is that if any institution could get away with corruption it would be the government, so the less we rely on big gov the better.

@@seraphina77 Your point was "The government does certain things, so that means the government is correct and within its rights to do those things". It's circular logic (and just because they get away with it doesn't mean it is right or appropriate). The Federal and State Constitutions outline the responsibilities of those bodies. The Federal Government has a very narrow purview, yet these days has its tentacles reaching into almost every aspect of a person's life.
Just to take one of those -- education is not a function of the Federal government, and arguably neither should it be at the state level. Control & funding of schools should be left up to the local communities they serve. Some state constitutions essentially consider the "local community" to be all the citizens of that state and the state government will have an hand in regulating local school districts (which I think is a bad idea, but each community is allowed to set their own rules).

"The poor you will ALWAYS have with you" addresses the fact that poverty doesn't have only one cause. Poverty isn't caused only by social or physical frailty (old age, lack of opportunities) but also by many other things, including an unwillingness to give up certain things that one would have to in order to work, whether that is just sleeping in any day you feel like or a drug or alcohol or taking meds that make you stable but that make you feel dull and bad. The issue is not that secular institutions want to help people but rather that the refuse to understand the human condition from an accurate and biblical perspective, instead casting the human heart as inherently good that is being somehow always restrained by an external evil, and so what they do to "help" destroys society and causes untold suffering and, frankly, lost souls. The secular version of help is structured quite deliberately to tear at the root of biblical anthropology, marriage, family, and so on, and it's not an accident.
The Church's role in the care of the poor is not from a person but rather from the historical role of the church from its foundation. One of the major functions of the church from its foundation was the physical support of the poor, first the poor in the church and then later all the poor because officially, at least, everyone was a Christian. The entire basis for this role existing was from a Christian belief about what Christians should do, with no existing secular basis. The bread of bread and circuses was not compassion but political expediency.
The state then seized this role from the Church and added it to the new religion of modernism, because all laws have a moral foundation and all morals can only be religious in character. This new foundation was one in which the state was the replacement for the church, which would bring about a new atheistic yet deeply religious Kingdom of Heaven on earth.
The reason that you don't see this pushback in other countries is that other countries are almost entirely apostate, having now moved to the new secularist religion, or they are in the mindset where there is hardly a difference between the power of the church or the state because they are so enmeshed.

I'm also not even saying that those who are poor because they're criminal druggies and have abused and stolen from every friend and family member they have shouldn't be helped. What I AM saying is that this is an issue of the heart, and unless the heart is addressed, no change can be made. This is why progressive "compassion" results in tent cities of homeless where people catch medieval diseases and sexual trafficking is rampant.

Amen and thank you for this very applicable teaching! Your insight on double-mindedness and the "feigned piety" of social justice revealed in Mark 14:4-5 serves as witness to Jesus' teaching on the same issue, in Matthew 6:1-4:
“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly."

That was a long-awaited discussion mic I loved every bit of it and right now we need this because our world is so confusing and it's confusing us as Christians of what were to believe and not believe and a lot of times the government who already takes our money and spends it the way they want to instead of leaving it up to us you find yourself in a position where you end up with not a lot of money but you still feel the obligation to get the word of Christ out there by supporting ministries and I struggle with that a lot

Don't just try to stop the lewdness. Try to worship the worthy Saviour more and more and more and the things of earth (like beautiful alabaster jars) will fall away into the dust. You are repentant and will find grace every day, like daily bread. You are finding your true love and acceptance and purpose as a worshipper and warrior in the Kingdom. God has great plans for you to lead others into wholeness and humility. Honesty is where it starts. You're not hiding anymore. You're coming into the light with truth! Praise the Lord!

As a Reformed Christian (i.e. following the biblical teachings of the Reformation), I many times have issues with Mr. Winger, and here is another case. He says not to apply the OT Israelite civil laws to our society "because we're not supposed to", without any biblical reasoning for this conclusion. The Reformers understood there were three spheres of "government" taught in the Bible - The Family, The Church, and The State - each has a sphere of responsibility before God, but each should respect their areas, and not "glom" over into the other spheres (e.g. State trying to tell churches when where, and how they are to worship God, Church taking on "the sword" of God's punishment, etc.). Mr. Winger's dispensational anti-Calvinistic leanings are skewing his judgment.
The question is - What does the Bible teach regarding the care of the poor? There should be no question that 1. Christians and the Christian Church are to care for the poor in their own extended families and in the Body of Christ - give to "your poor brother" (Deut. 15:7, Acts 6:1, I TIm. 5:8, Gal. 2:10; etc.); 2. The ones who we help should be deserving of help, not lazy or scofflaws (I TIm. 5:1-16), but regarding the poor in general, we are to practice personal piety and kindness to those in need around us (Matthew 5 - 7), but this is not required of Civil Governments. There is no obligation for any government to take care of the poor, unless you are able to set up a truly Christian Government, following biblical principles in all areas of government (i.e. as RJ Rushdooney, Gary North, and others have taught). But you can't tell an evil government to steal from the rich to give to the poor, as if that is somehow biblical! Our current tax codes and welfare systems are totally unbiblical, stealing from working people to give to many who are simply poor due to their own unbiblical choices. We as believers can and should help those around us personally, giving food, shelter, and the Gospel, but to then project this obligation onto a godless government is not biblical at all.
The Church CAN take care of the truly needy poor, if we were truly tithing, and if we were focusing on spreading the Gospel instead of basking in entertainment and self-help. The Church will grow and expand over the entire world, as Christ promised (Dan. 2:44; Luke 13:18-20; Rev. 11:15). Just as Mike said, why not have richer churches help poorer churches! It is NOT a Christian perspective to let the ungodly government take over the responsibility of caring for the poor. The Government should only do what only the Government can do - defense and civil/criminal justice - this is what Civil Israel did. Leave the "social issues" to the Church and the Family.
And for the record, most thinking politically minded Christians do NOT use this verse to "lobby" against care of the poor, they use this verse to show there can be no government-controlled "solution" to poverty or "the wealth gap" or whatever hip phrase is being thrown around, because there will always be poorer people and richer people. Biblical Charity is ALWAYS voluntary, not forced by a oppresive government. Even in Acts 5, Peter told Ananias regarding his property that "While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control?" There is no socialism in the Bible, and private property is foundational to the concept of Thou Shalt Not Steal!
Thank you, Mike, for tackling this issue, and allowing respectful and biblical responses that may or may not agree with you. Dios te bendiga!

Quick comment about the Sunday gatherings mentioned in the New Testament…I have heard it said that they gathered to deal and collect the money on the first day of the week because they were forbidden to handle money on the sabbath…so it’s not saying that they no longer gathered and worshipped on the Sabbath but that the business was dealt with on the first day of the week instead of the sabbath.
