Ok so I had the Xperia Z,Z1, 2 Z2's and a Z3+. On top of that I convinced 6 people to buy Sony phones in the past 2 years. With that said I bought a Galaxy S8+ to replace my Z3+ 3 weeks ago. I love how it looks and feels in the hand, but deep down I don't think I'll buy a Samsung phone again. As with almost all Samsung devices it is already starting to slow down, something that NONE of my Sony phones did in the time I had them. So after this Galaxy S8+, most probably hello again Sony :D
Matthew Gauci I've had Galaxy 2,3 4 and 5 . Switched to Z5 and will stick to Sony from now on. Like you, all of my Samsung devices have slowed den within 6 months of use. I'll probably skip this one because I'm really happy with my z5, but will buy the next premium Sony mobile.
CKG the phone was developed months before this was released so they probably couldn't predict the trend, and considering the bureaucratic progress in which ideas are implemented into products at Sony, it probably wouldn't implement bezeless displays that quickly
CKG Because Sony doesn't go with the flow most of the time. Bandwagon effect always plays a big part why Sony always left behind. It's nothing but marketing ploy. 😒😒😒 Side note: Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is my main driver and Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra is my second driver (for video viewing and gaming). I also have Xiaomi Mi Max for lighter games.
I have had my SONY XZP for over three weeks now, and I absolutely love it. In my opinion SONY has made a phone as good as any flagship phone made by any other brand. The stand out features are indeed the speed (the phone is blazingly fast) with a very smooth touch when using it.....the stunning 4K screen look amazing (colours just pop) and when you are just using it the screen is still crystal clear and vibrant. The build quality is excellent and it truly feels like a Premium device in the hand. The camera is very good, and the slo mo feature and the predictive picture function are both excellent.

As a Sony user for already a 4th phone and a proud owner of a XZs, I should add that after two years this phone will be still snappy as hell and still have an amazing battery life. I have seen this with Sony devices and is something I do really respect. Great review capturing the strengths of the phone.
Muhammad Wahaj Z1 user here! Sony phones may not be as 'great' as other flagships. But if there's one thing Sony's good at, it's longevity. My phone still hasn't slowed down and is still pretty snappy despite me having it for almost 4 years now!
Stanislav Slavev exactly! I've had every main iteration of the Sony Xperia line since the Z3 and not one phone has slowed down over time or lost battery capacity. Any Samsung or LG phone will become laggy after a year or so and the battery deteriorates. Sony does an excellent job of making sure that isn't the case with its phones
You Sony brainwashed zombies always come up with an excuse for those fat bezels lol their UI isn't 100% stock they still use their ugly AF icons and it comes with their own crappy software. They do update their phones quickly I'll give them that.
I have an XZ Premium (with the finger print sensor) for over 1 week and there is nothing out there that can compete with this phone when it comes to fit, finish, quality, build refinement, display resolution, black levels, battery life and camera 4K HDR an 960 fps slow motion all in one phone. I should know since I cross shopped with other mainstream phones. Many people in my office have the S8 plus or iPhone 7S plus. Their reaction once they put their phones next to mine, says it all.
Right, I would take high resolution speakers and those incredible camera sensors over bezel-less for show any day of the week. The build quality of XZ premium is on a different level. Fit, finish, materials and quality. All reviews online agree, Sony quality is on a different level. You are only making yourself look like an a**. It is all aluminum and Gorilla glass 5 everywhere except sides, which are extremely high quality composite material that was tested on youtube and it was extremely durable. The cheap sh*t plastic on the back of your Samsung. Try tapping it and listen to the hollow cr*p noise from it.
Im not a fan of glass back phones but samsungs dont look like plastic , sony looks more like it, and they didnt even bother to make metal frames like every decent phone
This is a videographers phone. Just love the sheer quality of footage and what about the frame rate!!!! Awesome. I used to have a z3 and chopped it in for an s6. Biggest mistake of my life. Will be back with Sony next February.
Still using this phone...love it...never slow...amazing screen...still getting 7hrs SOT regularly after 14months of use. My Z2 lasted 4 years, no doubt this one will last just as long. Testimony to a true quality device, not made up of gimmicks you use twice. Premium price but because they last longer than Samsung’s iPhones etc...so over the life Sony phones are actually cheaper to own, and as far as I can see without compromise.

Random Guy I don't understand, why does it have to be ugly to be a good phone? My S8+ can do everything the Sony can but on top of that it has a better design, better screen and more features.
Sony said they aren't doing it, but consider everyone else is starting to do it, I'm sure they will change their mind. A 2:1 screen at this size of a phone would look nice.
2:06 Correction: The XZ Premium runs at 1080p resolution most of the time and runs at 4k resolution when their is 4k content, it's 100% similar to Z5 Premium and it can run native 4k resolution (all the time) only when a custom ROM is applied.
While it is true that it runs in 1080p most of the time. It's not true that you need a custom ROM to run it in 4k. There is a simple command in ADB that you can run which ups the resolution to 4k. No root needed, just developer settings enabled :)

I have been using my phone at work for a few weeks now and quite a few of them, even ones with an S8, say that they love the look of my phone. For me the part that sold me on the phone was the audiophile options and even with me watching videos constantly the battery will last my full shift and then some so the people complaining about the battery drain of the display are exaggerating a bit.
Stop lying brah that phone won't last you a full day running on full 4K (oh wait it doesn't) and if you're a true audiophile you'd get a phone designed for that like the V10/V20 or an HTC phone.
the dislikes this phone gets is ridiculous considering it has: 5.5 inch 4 khr display wich is sharper than anything else out there at the moment. 19mp 960fps capable camera wich is unique and makes superb shots and even better daylight pictures than the s8 its being ignored or downtalked by most big reviewers. duel front facing stereo speakers. an actual 3.5mm headphone jack. a dedicated two stage camera shutter button. and it's the fastest android smartphone up to date! it's funny how most choose a smaller bezel over an overall better device. it didn't win best mobile 2017 for no reason! Ppl who complains this phone has too much top and bottom bezels needs to know it has a bit lesser bezels than iPHONE 7+ with the same screen size, yet no one complains about the bezels of iPHONE 7+.
I prefer a physical button. I don't trust finger print scanners. Im not bothered by bezel and I think it's petty to be. I mean, a front facing speaker is in all honesty superior in every way to anything else because its not going to be obstructed unless the screen is obstructed.

I like Xperia because of their practicality. They seem bulky, but its a huge testament to their build quality. I hate how phones keep getting thinner. Expandable storage, and battery life have always been important to me. And the camera takes amazing pictures.
Watching this with my Xperia XZ Premium. Finally! A perfect person to review a Sony Xperia smartphone, it's been a while since Xperia Z3. After 2 years of using Samsung Galaxy, from S4 to Note 5, I decided to switch back to Xperia (I used to have Sony Ericsson Xperia Play), as a Sony fan I'm so happy with this although honestly there are some features that are missing that I expected to be in this phone but this is the most optimized Android phone that I ever use. The design still works for me, the Omni-balance or Loop design though bezels are somewhat outdated but there are front facing stereo speakers and the 4K HDR screen packed with Sony's Bravia techs for mobile. In order for me to use the fingerprint scanner here in US, I bought mine with an international and unlocked version from Clove Technology a UK retailer and I'm using with T-Mobile (will only work with GSM carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T). The best smartphone for me. :-)
Tiv F the iPhone X is like the least bezelled device on the market 😂😂😂 the only device with less bezel is the New essential phone. I don't like the bezels on my Xperia xzp either. I hope they get rid of them soon and start using oled as well so I can actually enjoy the 4K on my screen.

As a filmmaker I must say this phone is awesome! I made a travel film of a recent trip to Paris with only Sony Xperia XZ Premium footage. The different recording modes just make it so cool. The 960fps mode is amazing if you use it right. 1080p, 60fps is wonderful and the 4K is just marvelous!

Thanks so much for watching and liking the video!!! Yes, Sony is superbe ;) The speakers are the best I've ever heard on a smartphone. Sony managed to give the sound bass and vividness. When watching RUclips or listening Spotify the sound is pleasing and loud enough to fill a room.
I've just ordered a pre owned one of these from someone on Ebay to replace my Z5. I've had my Z5 for 4 years and I still love it now. Me and that phone have been through some ups n downs. Best phone I've ever had! I also have a Samsung S8 that I've had for the past almost 2 years and I love that phone too. But I'm still leaning towards Sony's phones as my favourite. They've just got the edge over any other for me.

Why do people keep saying there's hardly any 4K content available? There's plenty and it'll only become more common as time goes bye and I prefer saying its future proof rather than ahead of its time. Theres no negative to having something "ahead of its time."
It's 2021 and After 4 yrs, my XZP is still working like like a champ. Fingerprint reader may be a bit off sometimes, but still works great. With the battery saver charging mode, Still get about 8 hrs of constant use while listening/watching youtube podcasts through a Bluetooth headphone set, and music through Bluetooth speaker at work. Lasts long if you take care of it.
Same here. Qnovo is just amazing, had other (Samsung S7, S9+) phones with battery degradation in 2 - 3 months while I noticed slight degradation after 3 years on the XZ Premium. I still keep it as I don't see a need to upgrade. Seems like 2017 was the peak of smartphone (in terms of processing power and efficiency, SD835 was the best leap) now they're just adding more cameras and focusing on software.
Sony XZp has already beaten s8, lg g6 and one plus 5 in speed tests. You can check that in comparison videos available online. Best phone of this year for sure. 👌👌
The interface does NOT run in 4K all the time (it wouldn't even make sense tbh.) Aside from that, really good review. Can't wait for the in depth camera and audio reviews!
Running the interface in a different resolution doesn't make a difference in battery. I've tested it myself with my old Nexus 6 and the only difference was in fluidity.
I had been using Sony Xperia Z5 for over a year. The cost for it was same as XZ when it was launched. Let me be frank, I have never experienced a single problem with Z5. The durability, usability and class is what Sony gives along with its powerful brand image. Those complaining about bezels in XZ needs to understand that this phone design was made months before bazel-less trends started in the market. I am sure Sony will launch the bazel-less phone soon.

People complaining about bezels. I like large bezel phones because it allows for stereo speakers and a proper place to hold the phone without disrupting the screen.
Why does everyone act like bezels are a bad thing. I absolutely despise bezeless phones. The are extremely fragile and you have no points to grip your phone without also touching the touchscreen.
From 2012 I am using Sony Xperia e1, then e3, then z2 then z5 and now thinking about Xperia xz pre. I liked that phone more than s8. But a bezel less design on same body would be appreciated. But again I loved the way it is now.

The best thing I've done is ditch the Sony, it always used to over heat in normal use. I could never film video on it as it would close down with a warning that it was overheating.
What i like most about this phone (aside from everything) is the play Pause functionality when recording videos.. As long as you set plan before making some vlogs or simple video story you can easily creat a story with out the aid of other apps to stitch multiple videos.. You get what i mean?.. Just amazing.. ELEXCEER you get the best stereo speakers built in within those bezels . you won't get that with S8 or any flagship this year . S8 looks better but i'm always after the specs ...

I'm not too surprised that the Motion Eye slow-mo isn't ideal for less-than-perfect lighting conditions. That's all down to shutter speed. The speed has to be really quick to capture all those frames. That means less time to get light which also means the ISO has to be jacked up to get legible footage. This isn't necessarily a knock on the Sony as many slow-mo cameras suffer from the same thing.
uhhh...Android Pay works fine on mine, and your internet is slow af if it's constantly buffering. Mine never buffers like that. Also, I'm getting minimum 5 hours SOT (I have yet to get less), so how are you not even getting 4? Something's not right....
Sony does make truly remarkable phones. Still have my original Xperia Z (with replaced battery this year after 5 years, yes, 5 years) with a custom rom that makes it run smooth. Also love how Sony give you the "keys" to its wipe and replace their OS on their website. So if you feel that its age is getting to it (3 years for my Xperia Z) just wipe and install a new lightweight OS and you've probably got another 3 years + performance. I mean, how many still use their old smartphone 5 years later, I do x'D (I have the XZP as well)

Sony xperia phones were always ahead of its time especially the z2 nothing could compete when z2 came out. There are couple of issues sony needs to fix like design and reduce bezels at least. new UI design (getting stale?), louders volume and better camera sofftware and nothing would touch it.
Edges are horrible for holding a phone sideways. It's just something that will look cool at first and then you will only be bothered by it because of the inconvenience while typing, watching videos and so on. It had already started to happen to me when I once used my aunt's S6 Edge. It's basically useless.
I sold my S8 and bought this a month after it came out in the US. I must say that I personally love it and have had a great experience with it. However, I am very biased on this because I have used Sony products since I was a child.
Samsung can have their title of android king when it comes to sales and popularity but Sony is King when it comes to hardware. They've been doing it since the Triniton days and with their Bravias and Playstations today. Will forever love Sony's design approach and premium feel.
I have the luminous chrome XZP and it is the most beautiful phone in the world. I had an iPhone before this and have tried an S8 and like my previous experience from my original Xperia Z, Sony's sheer speed and fluidity is unrivalled. This is the first phone to beat the 7 Plus in every type of speed test and it's a Android. That should get some serious recognition. Also the pentile screen of the S8 isn't as sharp and nothing can rival 4K HDR with 801ppi. The S8 also had black bars on RUclips which makes it the largest bezel phone in the world. The XZP atleast has stereospeakers and grip for the camera button as reasons for the bezels. Also the memory stacked camera takes a lot space.
Everyone saying that different phones had big bezels too, but these bezels are too much even for the stereo speakers. Don't has to take notes from HTC with the HTC one or the newer Razer phone those speakers are just too small to justify the amount of bezel.
Honestly if the display was 4K HDR all the time and OLED and infinity display.... (And fingerprint worked in US) It would be the best phone of all time.

Every phone has had massive bezels until the begining of this year. It's not a "2012 design" it's "2016" at the least.

While it is true that it runs in 1080p most of the time. It's not true that you need a custom ROM to run it in 4k. There is a simple command in ADB that you can run which ups the resolution to 4k. No root needed, just developer settings enabled :)
Burned, no it shows 1080p most of the time but when there's 4k content it shows 4k resolution.

I have been using my phone at work for a few weeks now and quite a few of them, even ones with an S8, say that they love the look of my phone. For me the part that sold me on the phone was the audiophile options and even with me watching videos constantly the battery will last my full shift and then some so the people complaining about the battery drain of the display are exaggerating a bit.

I prefer a physical button. I don't trust finger print scanners. Im not bothered by bezel and I think it's petty to be. I mean, a front facing speaker is in all honesty superior in every way to anything else because its not going to be obstructed unless the screen is obstructed.

I like Xperia because of their practicality. They seem bulky, but its a huge testament to their build quality. I hate how phones keep getting thinner. Expandable storage, and battery life have always been important to me. And the camera takes amazing pictures.

Watching this with my Xperia XZ Premium. Finally! A perfect person to review a Sony Xperia smartphone, it's been a while since Xperia Z3. After 2 years of using Samsung Galaxy, from S4 to Note 5, I decided to switch back to Xperia (I used to have Sony Ericsson Xperia Play), as a Sony fan I'm so happy with this although honestly there are some features that are missing that I expected to be in this phone but this is the most optimized Android phone that I ever use. The design still works for me, the Omni-balance or Loop design though bezels are somewhat outdated but there are front facing stereo speakers and the 4K HDR screen packed with Sony's Bravia techs for mobile. In order for me to use the fingerprint scanner here in US, I bought mine with an international and unlocked version from Clove Technology a UK retailer and I'm using with T-Mobile (will only work with GSM carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T). The best smartphone for me. :-)

As a filmmaker I must say this phone is awesome! I made a travel film of a recent trip to Paris with only Sony Xperia XZ Premium footage. The different recording modes just make it so cool. The 960fps mode is amazing if you use it right. 1080p, 60fps is wonderful and the 4K is just marvelous!

The speakers are the best I've ever heard on a smartphone. Sony managed to give the sound bass and vividness. When watching RUclips or listening Spotify the sound is pleasing and loud enough to fill a room.

I've just ordered a pre owned one of these from someone on Ebay to replace my Z5. I've had my Z5 for 4 years and I still love it now. Me and that phone have been through some ups n downs. Best phone I've ever had!
I also have a Samsung S8 that I've had for the past almost 2 years and I love that phone too. But I'm still leaning towards Sony's phones as my favourite. They've just got the edge over any other for me.

Why do people keep saying there's hardly any 4K content available? There's plenty and it'll only become more common as time goes bye and I prefer saying its future proof rather than ahead of its time. Theres no negative to having something "ahead of its time."
It's 2021 and After 4 yrs, my XZP is still working like like a champ. Fingerprint reader may be a bit off sometimes, but still works great. With the battery saver charging mode, Still get about 8 hrs of constant use while listening/watching youtube podcasts through a Bluetooth headphone set, and music through Bluetooth speaker at work. Lasts long if you take care of it.
Same here. Qnovo is just amazing, had other (Samsung S7, S9+) phones with battery degradation in 2 - 3 months while I noticed slight degradation after 3 years on the XZ Premium. I still keep it as I don't see a need to upgrade. Seems like 2017 was the peak of smartphone (in terms of processing power and efficiency, SD835 was the best leap) now they're just adding more cameras and focusing on software.
Sony XZp has already beaten s8, lg g6 and one plus 5 in speed tests. You can check that in comparison videos available online. Best phone of this year for sure. 👌👌

The interface does NOT run in 4K all the time (it wouldn't even make sense tbh.) Aside from that, really good review. Can't wait for the in depth camera and audio reviews!

Running the interface in a different resolution doesn't make a difference in battery. I've tested it myself with my old Nexus 6 and the only difference was in fluidity.
Yes, you can simulate any screen resolution with ADB on any phone.

I own the XZ1 with a custom ROM rooted running Android 11 Arrow ROM. Before rooting it was a good phone but now it's almost perfect!!
I had been using Sony Xperia Z5 for over a year. The cost for it was same as XZ when it was launched. Let me be frank, I have never experienced a single problem with Z5. The durability, usability and class is what Sony gives along with its powerful brand image. Those complaining about bezels in XZ needs to understand that this phone design was made months before bazel-less trends started in the market. I am sure Sony will launch the bazel-less phone soon.

I've had a Sony, Samsung, two LG's, and a Sanyo. The best one out of all of them is the Sony because of the hardware quality and the software. I'm going back to Sony with a an XZ Premium.
People complaining about bezels. I like large bezel phones because it allows for stereo speakers and a proper place to hold the phone without disrupting the screen.
Why does everyone act like bezels are a bad thing. I absolutely despise bezeless phones. The are extremely fragile and you have no points to grip your phone without also touching the touchscreen.

The best thing I've done is ditch the Sony, it always used to over heat in normal use.

What i like most about this phone (aside from everything) is the play Pause functionality when recording videos.. As long as you set plan before making some vlogs or simple video story you can easily creat a story with out the aid of other apps to stitch multiple videos.. You get what i mean?.. Just amazing.. Thumbs up

I'm not too surprised that the Motion Eye slow-mo isn't ideal for less-than-perfect lighting conditions.
That's all down to shutter speed. The speed has to be really quick to capture all those frames. That means less time to get light which also means the ISO has to be jacked up to get legible footage. This isn't necessarily a knock on the Sony as many slow-mo cameras suffer from the same thing.

uhhh...Android Pay works fine on mine, and your internet is slow af if it's constantly buffering. Mine never buffers like that. Also, I'm getting minimum 5 hours SOT (I have yet to get less), so how are you not even getting 4? Something's not right....
Sony does make truly remarkable phones. Still have my original Xperia Z (with replaced battery this year after 5 years, yes, 5 years) with a custom rom that makes it run smooth. Also love how Sony give you the "keys" to its wipe and replace their OS on their website. So if you feel that its age is getting to it (3 years for my Xperia Z) just wipe and install a new lightweight OS and you've probably got another 3 years + performance. I mean, how many still use their old smartphone 5 years later, I do x'D (I have the XZP as well)

Sony xperia phones were always ahead of its time especially the z2 nothing could compete when z2 came out.
There are couple of issues sony needs to fix like design and reduce bezels at least. new UI design (getting stale?), louders volume and better camera sofftware and nothing would touch it.

I couldn't care less about the bezels and don't care about edge display... So don't care about iPhones and Samsung they r a bit overrated...
Edges are horrible for holding a phone sideways. It's just something that will look cool at first and then you will only be bothered by it because of the inconvenience while typing, watching videos and so on. It had already started to happen to me when I once used my aunt's S6 Edge. It's basically useless.

I sold my S8 and bought this a month after it came out in the US. I must say that I personally love it and have had a great experience with it. However, I am very biased on this because I have used Sony products since I was a child.
Samsung can have their title of android king when it comes to sales and popularity but Sony is King when it comes to hardware. They've been doing it since the Triniton days and with their Bravias and Playstations today. Will forever love Sony's design approach and premium feel.

The fingerprint sensors on Sony phones are enabled in Canada, its just the U.S. models that have it disabled.
I have the luminous chrome XZP and it is the most beautiful phone in the world. I had an iPhone before this and have tried an S8 and like my previous experience from my original Xperia Z, Sony's sheer speed and fluidity is unrivalled. This is the first phone to beat the 7 Plus in every type of speed test and it's a Android. That should get some serious recognition. Also the pentile screen of the S8 isn't as sharp and nothing can rival 4K HDR with 801ppi. The S8 also had black bars on RUclips which makes it the largest bezel phone in the world. The XZP atleast has stereospeakers and grip for the camera button as reasons for the bezels. Also the memory stacked camera takes a lot space.

Everyone saying that different phones had big bezels too, but these bezels are too much even for the stereo speakers. Don't has to take notes from HTC with the HTC one or the newer Razer phone those speakers are just too small to justify the amount of bezel.
