That Myota movement is is a fine machine the equivalent of an ETA costing twice the money. It is hidden in the case so the appearance is not an issue. In this application I don't see any reason to pay the Swiss tax.

When I lived in France I had the opportunity of talking with someone related with Baltic and Charlie Paris and he told me that both wanted to be “prix juste”, honest price in their words to make good watches without luxury values added.
Probably this made Baltic to avoid ETA movements, and also the delays of delivery that where barely impossible according to the development plans of the brand

THANK YOU! Finally someone states the truth, a real diver, a good diver and a safe diver doesn't use a dive watch, they use a dive computer. This has been the case for years. Any diver going under about 30 meters with a dive watch would be considered either an idiot or irresponsible show off.

Being first on the comments is a young man's game. Oh! my lost youth.
That's a bonny watch, particularly in blue, with a tastefully restrained styling, sizing and price.
Can we see some more vintage watches sometime. Maybe a subscriber's photo send in? With some value categories (under €500, €500-1500 etc.) so some mutt doesn't dominate the proceedings with a load of Rolex grail items.
    Thanks for today's show Tim.

Interesting watch, but you're right Baltic should start looking at a Swiss movement. A Super Compressor watch is a watch that has two crowns, compressor case design and a spring to help distribute the force of the water more evenly. The spring also helps the watch "relax" as the water pressure drops when ascending. The Super Compressor was the third iteration of the compressor design by Ervin Piquerez S.A. To the best of my knowledge there is only one super compressor watch still in production made by Christopher Ward. The rest have "compressor-style" designs featuring an inner rotating bezel and two crowns. I do like this sort of design and have a couple of compressor style watches myself. Keep up the great work.

A great release by Baltic, I think they are one of the good value and quality microbrands.
The black on PVD looks very cool. I would say a Soprad or an SW would be a better option than the Mioyata.

An up and coming brand like Baltic cannot solely live off collectors who prefer ETA’s or whatever else Swiss movements. They need to appeal to the wider customer base who might be drawn by visual appeal (very much the case with this brand) and value. Filling this case with a Swiss movement would easily push the price point above €1k.

  • @H0kram

ETA does not sell to small brands, one needs to sign for a significant amount of movements for them to deliver.
Thus, a small brand needs to buy the ETA from a broker, who either buys them from ETA or to big brands ( more common ).
So it's quite expensive for a very small brand to get an ETA in that regard.
Sellita is more or less the same story.
The STP company is probably going to become a solid alternative to microbrands who wants a swiss label, because they do sell their movement to small brands. Filling a void left by ETA and possibly by Sellita who is focusing on increasing their production volume.
Ps : I believe that Baltic is absolutely big enough to buy swiss movements, even from Sellita. This is an economical choice. To each his own, I'm not saying they should go swiss, I'm saying Baltic has a policy of high margin that they achieve more easely by going japanese while staying mostly under the 1000 euros market.

I have 4 Miyota 90 series and 5 ETA 28 series watches. The Miyotas all keep +5 spd or under and three of the ETAs about the same. Two ETAs refuse to stay regulated. The ETA movements are Swiss workhorses but like the words “Swiss Made” highly overrated. Especially for the price. The Swiss mafia at work.

I'm not sure why there is hate for the Miyota 9039. By all accounts, it is basically a direct competitor the ETA 2824 and Balitic regulates them well... my Aquascaphe runs 2 seconds per day from them.

    • @CasebackWatches
      @CasebackWatches  3 года назад +2

It's not really hate afaik. But often I had the feeling that a Miyota is - compared to an ETA - a wobbly thing. Winding it, setting the time, all that feels quite different. But you're right with timekeeping. I've noticed this too. They do the job.

While watching I kept thinking that I should rather save up and buy the (new) Longines Legend Diver in blue and then you suddenly showed a variant of it. But the blue has a date window so the right decision in my little world would be to wait for Longines to release the no-date version, which I have no idea if it will happen (fun fact: the black no-date is very collectible). I type this in the hope that being rational will protect me from the other me who didn’t notice my wife’s disapproving stare!

Nice looking watch, but not exciting in my opinion. Expensive at €550 for a Miyota movement. If I add the 20% tax on top in my country, €660....way too much. Better is available for €350-€500. You can get a Seiko Prospex with sapphire crystal, good movement, and great diver heritage for this Baltic price.

@@user-tx4wj7qk4t Did I say anything about compressors in particular ? No. I just mean value for money. As for the movement.....would you want a $5000 engine in a nice looking sports car you paid $100,000 for, or would you expect something better? However if you want a compressor but only want to pay an appropriate price given the movement inside, you can get a Dan Henry 1970, 200m water resistance and a Seiko NH35 for only $300. It's just not worth it. You might notice my comment was over 3 years ago so take that price as 3 years old. Since that time there is plenty of competition in compressor style watches.
