Ukraine downs Russian Tu 22 and A 50 aircraft, while upgrading its outdated S 200 air defense system

According to reports from the Kyiv Post, Ukraine likely used Soviet-era S-200 air defense missile systems, dating back to the 1960s, to bring down a Tu-22 and two A-50s. These missiles, designed to target high-altitude strategic bombers and spy planes, have shown effectiveness against Russian strategic aviation in recent months. Unlike previous encounters where Russian bombers were only damaged or destroyed on the ground, Ukrainian air defense forces have demonstrated increased proficiency by successfully intercepting enemy aircraft in the air.
In January 2024, Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed a Russian A-50U long-range radar detection aircraft and inflicted serious damage on an Il-22M, believed to serve as a relay by the Russians. Despite significant damage to the fuselage, the enemy managed to land the damaged aircraft. On February 23, another Russian A-50 aircraft was shot down during a combat mission over the Sea of Azov.
On April 19, 2024, a Russian Tu-22M3 supersonic strategic bomber, equipped with Kh-22 and Kh-32 missiles, fell prey to the Ukrainian Air Force and the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces. Ukraine claims that in all these instances, the outdated Soviet S-200 anti-aircraft system was employed.
The S-200, originally developed in the 1960s, has undergone several modernizations, including the S-200V Vega, S-200M Vega-M, and the basic S-200 Angara version. Each modification aimed to enhance missile and guidance systems, improving system accuracy. Although specific technical details of the upgraded S-200 missile remain undisclosed, it is presumed that modifications may have been made to increase flight range and improve guidance systems.
