Now their old sentences were ignored and they were summarily executed as apostates if they did not repent and affirm belief in Islam. Several thousand were thus executed. This was one of the darkest human rights incidents in the twentieth century and certainly the worst in modern Iranian history.

For those of you who wonder why they introduced Mohammad Marandi blandly as "a professor" but Roxane Farmanfarmaian as a "Professor of Modern Middle East Politics": Marandi is professor for English Literature and Orientalism which is an unqualifying subject.
Most people are barely literate, so they don't care. Marandi's academic qualifications may not be up to international standards, he's chosen as a program guest because he's familiar with American English and U.S. politics.

IMO that was an unprofessional and even worse deliberately manipulative move by Al Jazeera and I wanted to point that out for the public.
that helicopter was 45 years old supplied by the US, they discontinued production in 1999 and later refused to supply Iran with parts and maintenance for the helicopter, adding in, thick fog, low visibility and miscommunication was really a recipe for disaster.
