The Tupolev Tu-22M weapon upgrade is quite impressive

  • The Backfire weapon upgrade is quite impressive, enhancing the bomber’s capabilities against both land targets and surface ships. In addition to the new land-attack missiles (the Kh-101 and Kh-555, according to Russian press), there reportedly will be at least two long-range ultrahigh-speed dual-capable (nuclear and conventional) missiles with land-attack and antiship capability. This is important because the Department of Defense has said the United States currently has no defense against hypersonic missiles. Backfire’s manufacturer, Tupolev, claims the improved Backfire bomber will be operational in 2021.
Not only does the TU-22M3 have improved range, but according to Russian state media it also carries the new Kh-32 long-range supersonic cruise missile. The Kh-32 travels just below hypersonic speed and is a dual-capable (nuclear and conventional) antiship and land-attack cruise missile. Sputnik News states its speed is Mach 4.1 and TASS puts it at more than Mach 5. That appears too high, except perhaps in a terminal dive, but even at Mach 4 at 130,000 feet it is a very serious threat, possibly invulnerable to existing Western air-defense systems.
According to Russian media and other Russian publications, the Kh-32’s range is 620 miles. Sputnik News and Russia Beyond the Headlines report that it is nuclear capable, which is confirmed in the 2018 U.S. Nuclear Posture Review. Russia Beyond the Headlines reports the Kh-32’s accuracy within a few yards and warhead weight limit at 1,002 pounds. This gives a powerful conventional antiship warhead capability as well. The Kh-32 reportedly became operational in 2016. If so, more than 100 operational Backfire bombers could be carrying it now.
The Kh-32 makes it more difficult to intercept the Backfire before weapons-release range. The Soviet-era Kh-22 (still reportedly operational) has half the range of the new weapon. While post-Cold War U.S. Navy fighters have much better radars and avionics than the F-14, they lack its long-range (and even the F-14 range would not be adequate against a Kh-32-armed aircraft). The longer range of the Tu-22M3M complicates a carrier strike group’s ability to set up a barrier defense. The extreme speed of the missile reduces flight time by a factor of four compared to a subsonic antiship missile, reducing the defensive value of locational uncertainty between launch and impact time.

On 23 March 2021, a Tu-22M3's ejection system malfunctioned, suddenly activating while still on the ground. The incident resulted in the deaths of three crew members and the hospitalization of a fourth.[105] An official from Russia's Defense Ministry said that "due to the insufficient altitude for parachute opening, three crewmembers received fatal injuries upon landing.

At the same time Russia only has 63 Tu-22M aircraft in service. In the Soviet days that would be only about 2-3 regiments, doctrinally only enough to attack a battlegroup with a single super-carrier. With the prevalence of AEGIS ships, I doubt that number is still sufficient.
Attacking the bombers is primarily done in the Outer Air Battle, carried out by fighters, and, if time allows, through a SAM trap DDG or CG. Defense against the missiles is part of the Inner Air Battle done primarily with SAMs.
If I were a Russian pilot I’d hope that I wasn’t expected to get within 1000 kilometers of a CVBG. Not that this missile will put more bread on the tables of the Russian citizens (or make their public healthcare better, But it makes the Russians feel more proud (despite the state of the Russian infrastructure, public health, economy, retirement, and CORRUPTION).
For all "Sofa experts" that earned their PhD in Geopolitics and military studies sitting in their mom's attic watching RUclips videos:
This video is for internal consumption. Mind you all that a chance of a war between Russia / US / China etc. is closer to getting your car hit by an asteroid. However this kind of discussion destructs the Russian citizens (And, recently the US citizens as well) from discussing the real issues that affect our daily lives, such as economical / social situation, state of corruption and investment in infrastructure, public health, education and other topics that need attention. Standard slight of hand trick, cynically exploited by our politicians to keep the "regular citizens" under control, without them noticing they've been "taken for a ride". At the end of the day the worst scenario for all politicians is that the regular mortals wake up and realize the the war is not between us, but between the regular citizens and their "leaders" (the only use for them that I see, is to be processed for dog food).
To the point of those "scary supersonic missiles". Objectively speaking, the difference between military capabilities of Russia vs. this of the US is not even a subject to comparison. The Pentagon, as well as, top Russian Brass and Putin know this fact very well. There are other reasons why the Pentagon will never admit this (MIC). That's why the Russian defense doctrine has not changed since 1987.
In an unlikely scenario of a full fledged war between the US and Russia, the defining factors (specifically talking about TU22 ) are their combat cycle (I bet are over 12 hours and operational / maint. is around 1/ 14 to 1 / 25) leads to a negligible cumulative impact of these missiles on the US military targets. Further discussion is a waste of time.

The TU-160 is far better, the Tu-22M was shot down by Georgia in 2008

Doesnt mean the 22 is bad...Georgia had some decent air defenses and the 22 was put at risk

You can't compare Land bombing operations with Naval Strike Missions. It's two comoletely different settings

But in 12 years it's undergone substantial modification and enhancement. So the argument hardly applies?
