I've had the 880 premiums since i saw this video in 2014. They are still going strong, no faults, very durable! Fell in love with them the day i got them and still do, wouldn't want any other phones for my home setup.

Just incase anyone is wondering. The 880s are superb for House, especially Deep House. Drums are really crisp.

Can definitely recommend the DT770 Pro 250 Ohms. Bought them for a noisy dorm environment and they're ideal for my situation.

I picked up a pair of DT990 600Ohms a few weeks ago and I'm loving how comfortable they are. I wear them pretty much all day.

  • @metalbillyboy

I have the 990 (250 ohms), my brother the 990 (600 ohms). They sound amazing. the base is stronger than the 880s but very tight. they are completely open. I'd recommend them to anyone who likes bass. from symphonic metal over electronic and dubstep to good ol' rock these sound amazing (paired them with a xonar essence stx soundcard) best money I've ever spend

Anyone getting a slight hissing in the audio?

    • @bfkc111
      @bfkc111 5 лет назад +2

No, you stupid a**hole. Maybe it's somehow connected to the audio, but still a faulty, distorted presentation by your gear. (I have good enough gear to hear basic faults like that if relevant, a Sennheiser HD 600 and ODAC/O2, though not even going to get into debates with conceited, manipulative idiots now, that is in any case better than most have, even many qualifying for Hifi. But there you, already dealing with so many idiots in advance [as proven by the upvotes though]...)

BFKC hmm, isn’t that a bit rude, no one really cares about your gear or opinion on people. This guy (I assume) just asked a question if he was the only one, so maby he could just realize that he has a problen with his audio system. Just chill.

@@bfkc111 Who is really the stupid one here? It's not about gear, I have HD 600 as well as there is indeed a background hiss in the video. Not a lot, but he was just pointing it out, while you just blew it out of the proportions for no reason. If you can't hear the hiss, then maybe you should check your ears.

Just a bit of info - "Premium" is not the official name. Beyerdynamic even made an official statement explaining that there are no Premium names for their products, but some distributors added Premium name instead of the official name, which is Edition.
So, I have seen the following variations of DT880 and DT990:
    Pro,
    regular non-Pro,
    Edition (Premium),
    Special Black Edition,
Pro Black Edition (seen this only on Thomann.de),
    Premium Limited-Edition Black (Massdrop),
    Pro Limited-Edition Black (Massdrop),
HZ (seen only on Beyerdynamic website).
And now also custom Manufaktur editions.
And also consider that many of those editions have subvariants with different impedances: 32/250/600 Ohm.
Oh, Beyerdynamic, what are you doing, please, stop confusing us!

  • @evilsqirrel

Owner of DT 880 premium 250 Ohm cans here. They are really good. Extremely comfortable, semi-open back makes them great for listening to all sorts of sound and music. One important thing to note that is not said in the video: The DT 880 Pros are designed for studio mastering. They are more sensitive to volume and pitch changes than the premiums. This can cause a suboptimal listening experience. If you get these, get the premiums. They are designed for listening. The bass is indeed tight, but I still find it good for electronic music. If you are looking for loose, muddy bass, these are not the right headphones. They are great for all-around listening and are great entry-level audiophile cans.

  • @HeretixAevum
    @HeretixAevum 10 лет назад +8

2:00 Actually on the Premium you can open the headband padding up on the top and put it back together. If you look closely at the top, the seam in the middle is actually where the two sides snap lock into place. It just means you have to open up the headband assembly with a screwdriver to get at it. The fins you mention at 3:25 are there to conceal that part (as well as for looks). Less convenient but looks a lot more subtle.
Also I have to disagree with you about you saying that "they're not as open as they are closed". I don't think they share any of the traits at all of a sealed headphone, and I think "semi open" is a bullshit term used by Beyer to try and make the DT880 seem unique among the DT770-DT880-DT990 line up. Semi open is kind of like saying a woman is semi-pregnant. You're one or the other, you cannot be halfway in between. The DT880 sounds distinctly like a "fully" open headphone to me, because that's what it is. When you open them up and look behind the driver there's a very clear, substantial hole that leads to the mesh. It's an open headphone. Just because the DT990s hole is bigger, that doesn't somehow make the DT880 only partially open. The DT880 also has a bigger soundstage than certain other 'fully' open headphones. Grado anyone?
Otherwise, good video. 880 600 Ohm premiums are my desktop headphone, they're good stuff.

Personally, I prefer the DT990s, as they more closely match the Goldenears target, which is the perceived neutrality, rather than the actual neutrality of the headphones. I've heard them both, and plan on buying the 990s soon. I hope Beyer gave you money for this, because they've got themselves a new customer now.

I had a DT880 pro for about 2 week until one of the drivers started to fail. I didnt like the soundstage of the lack of bass, they were also a little to tight, I returned them for the DT990 premium 250 ohm and they sound much better than the 880s, I have them connected to a audioengine D1 DAC and a Schiit Magni amp.

Other reviews have noted that the 32 Ohm are noticeably inferior to the 250 or 600 Ohm, are not tight in bass or treble, and are not recommended. I have the 600 Ohm plugged into a 5.1 receiver using my PC digital out and they sound amazing. They replaced my 12yr old low Ohm Sennheiser and are not as hard to drive as I expected with only about a 6 db boost on the volume knob needed. If you need an amp to run the 250ohm you can most likely drive the 600ohm.

Been looking for a while for a VS comparison on DT770 pro / DT 880 pro and DT990 pro as i'm undecided what to buy, I owned a pair for 10 years DT770 pro and my question is this, are DT 880 pro considered an upgrade to the DT770's? as I noticed you said the bass can be more stable on the DT770's? which is putting me off the DT880's.

Hi, thank you for the nice overview :)
    My questions are:
1 - how do you think the 250 ohm ver works with a presonus firestudio mobile? (150mW/CH @ 60 Ohm load)
2 - According to your experience, which of the two cans are better for both worlds? (entertainment/studio) (honestly speaking i'm a bit concerned with the clamping force of the pro ver...)
Currently using Grado sr225i: in short, good sounding HP but quite uncomfortable :(

If you are looking to get these for your PC you don't really need an AMP.
Most onboard soundcards should be able to run everything to about 350ish-400ish Ω.
And if you are looking at the 600 Ω version you should have an external AMP anyways.
I have the 990s, and everything people talk about 'hearing footsteps exactly where they come from' with 7.1 surround sound headsets I can say about them ten folds.
I can't immagine the 880s being much worse, since they are the same drivers just semi open instead of fully open.
    .
Every game just sounds so crisp, it actually becomes nice turning the ingame music for stuff like dota back on.

Since the Pros aren't available in the 600 ohm version, I wonder whether your preference for the Premiums has more to do with the impedance than with anything else. In other words, if you were to evaluate the 250 ohm versions of the two models, would you still prefer the Premiums or would you consider the two models to be virtually identical?

But, I do not know if it takes a break-in or not, but the DT880 Premium is clearer in terms of sound, I hear much better music and details ... it's normal? Я с вами полностью согласен, версия Edition, лучше PRO, в Edition есть хорошие верха и бас чистый, а в PRo этого не хватает

I can wear my Sennheiser 558's all day without realising they are on my head. I haven't worn them longer than that though.

My next headphone to add to my collection will either be a DT880 or an Audio Technica 900X

HD558 or 598s imo have a much better sound than these. The sens have a slightly dark coloring of the sound which helps fatigue a ton!

Why, If stated in a previous video that anything above 320 kbps is unnecessary (can't tell difference according to you) and a waste of space, would you spend the amount of money these headphones cost just to listen to mp3 quality music? Please enlighten me

I am looking for a nice pair of headphones for listening to music (Rock and Electronic) and for gaming. Open headphones seem like the way to go and the Audio Technica AD ATH 700X looks pretty good but I am using ATH M50s at the moment and while the sound is nice and flat and great for monitoring audio, I find them uncomfortable after a while and they are not great for gaming as the sound stage is tiny. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

DT-770 pros highly recommend, you will most definitely not be disappointed on comfort and sound.

I'm in the same boat as you. I can't suggest specific headphones but if you want to keep the M50s you can go buy "Shure HPAEC940 Replacement Velour Ear Pads" which are a great replacement for the shitty stock pleather pads

I figured you listen to metal on occasion. How would you say do the Beyerdynamic handle themselves with high speeds like blastbeats etc. Is the DT 880 "fast enought" for genres like Black and Death metal or have you had better headphones for those musical genres?

semi open and open back headphones has sound leak which is pretty suck and this is why they are more for studio

I just ordered a pair of 880 premiums at 600 ohms. My primary use for these with be mixing and mastering at my home studio. Do you have an amp you would reccomend that I get for these or should I consider getting the 250 or 32 ohms. I am working on a budget so what do you think my best option is. And what would be my ultimate option.

When you say the 250 need an amp? How about if your connecting them directly to an audio interface? Such as the Roland quad capture?

Nice set of headphones. I'm looking to buy some new ones because the ones I'm using right now, Logitech G930 isn't really the headset for me.
One question though: What kind of microphone do you guys use on the recordings of these videos? are there any upcoming reviews for microphones?

So aren´t the 880´s very similar to most Sennheisers? In the sense that they are clean and balanced but dont stand out in any manner? Maybe a bit boring? Please take a look at the HE-400 from Hifiman.
    Thank you.

No not quite, the Beyers are brighter in the treble and not as "lush" or laid back sounding as the Sennheisers. So Sennheisers are a bit more relaxing, while the 880s are more exciting, but also moire unpleasant at higher volumes especially :) ( Compared to Sennheisers HD5 and HD6 series)
