I've watched hours of Jimbo's garage. I went out and bought some wrought iron and built a 12 foot single swing gate very similar to the style of the ones in this video. Project turned out great. So much great advice and fabricating tips in these fun videos. Thank you Jimbo!
Very well done. I am in the process of making security bars for my shop windows. got my corner clamps from HF. cheap enough that I don't mind if they get welded on. sure make a difference when building frames though.
Good project, and the result was beautiful. With a friend we also do this kind of work, people are very happy when they see a nice and clean job well done. Regards.
Great video as always, Jimbo! I wish you would have done this one about 6 months earlier. I had to build a gate for my side yard and never though of using self-tapping screws, that was a smart idea! I ended up using long but thin bolts running through the 1/2" sections to secure the metal backer. I didn't use privacy screen but rather solid 20 gauge sheet (just a guess on the guage) on the back for privacy and man oh man that was a pain to weld! I should have done the 1/8" bar clamped in place instead. I have a front gate to do and I will be following your advice this go around! THANKS!!!
I like watching your technique. Show the hinges and lockbox welding and self close. I have used your technique on my jobs and it has sped up the fab time. Thanks for that. Ps whats the beer you have in video?
I've been taught how to do all of this very differently. I usually use an L square to make my frames. Also even though the corner vise is quicker to make the frame there's a higher chance that the frame will warp a lot due to It not being on a flat and level surface. Also I start my welds on the outside corner joints first so my frame doesn't warp. And then I weld the inside corner joints. At the very last I weld the butt joint where the 45's meet but weld all of them in the same direction ex: from outside to inside on all 4 corners. All of this makes for the minimum amount of warpage.
I was always taught that when welding up 45゚ corners you wanna tack weld all 4 sides on each corner then Weld the top on all 4 corners then flip the piece over and weld the bottom and then Weld the outer and inner corner. The top and the bottom will have the least amount effect of pushing or pulling your part out of square if you weld the outer corner 1st what can happen is you end up opening your 45゚ corner to a 46° or 47゚ corner and if you weld the inner corner 1st you can end up closing your 45゚ corner to a 44° or 43° degree corner Depending on how much heat you're putting into the product and how well you have it clamped. Also if those parts really are cast iron how are you getting away with not preheating the cast iron to adequate temperature before welding or is it just decorative so it's not necessary? Keep up the awesome videos I love your channel you do a damn good job!
The gate came out looking great. I think the only thing I would do different is to use pop rivets instead of self tapping screws on the screen to get a better flush look.
Very nice gates and panels. Don't you love it when they change the design after you have them already built! One question. I have built a gate that has these slide on collars. After it is all built how do you keep the metal that is unpainted under the collars from rusting? Rain running down the pickets and through the collars drag rust down to the bottom rail. I thought you or someone else might have the answer to this problem. Paint or powder coating can't reach down into there between the picket and collar. The only thing I could think of is a weld through primer wherever the collars are going to be but getting the primer on the inside of the collars would be a major problem. Thanks for your video. Tom
Thanks for watching, Yes that is a problem that i have had in the past, I even tried to prime them before welding the m on, Not much luck there either. Jimbo!
Thanks for watching Jeff, Yes have done those and i have a video on it, However i had my local metal supply store create the radius for me. Jimbos garage!
viejo, disculpa mi ignorancia, pero jimbo dice castein a las plomadas que van en las varillas, se refiere a estaño, o a que material, pk le he buscado traducción y no le encuentro
Just would like to a minute to thank you ...... I recently just found your videos and would like to let you know you are inspiring, hopefully one day i can be in the line of work you do..... one question thou how big is your shop
I'm doing a similar gate and 2 short sections of fence for my backyard. What type of hinges did you use and how did you attach them? Would love to see photos or video of that part of the build. Thanks.
Do you weld all over the collars ? Or only tuck it? Also how do you protect it from rain and rust? (Obviously am asking this cause under the collar it wasnt painted)
Absolutely great video. Thank you!! Where do you purchase the privacy material? I looked at Kings but could not find it there. Is there lightweight material the gives you complete privacy? Thanks again for such well done videos.
Great project! I do have a question. What technique do you use to paint the security screen? I need to repaint my front security door and I'm concerned the holes will clog with paint.
How do you determine what size square tubing do you use? I want to build my fence but I am having a hard time finding out what gauge to go with. I want to use 4x4 post and for the frame 2x2 or 2x4 with wood slabs. Any help I would appreciate it. Thanks and keep the videos coming they are awesome.
Thanks for watching, Use at least 1/8'' for the posts and .063 or 1/16'' for the rest of the sq. tubing, That way you can screw the wood to the tubing with self tapping screws. Jimbos garage!
A mix of “regular” cast iron, and apparently, white cast iron, which is really hard, and brittle. You also never want to try to weld it. If you can’t cut it, you can’t use it for what you want. How white cast got into those parts is hard to understand. And boy, you sure like that style of collar.
woww Sir that was very good... thank you, now i have a better idea how to build mine p.s. impressed with your garage, very organized and have everything! amazing :)
Nice work Jimbo! Before they get painted, do you grind the entire piece to get all the splatter off etc? I dont see a link to that corner vice.. where did you find it? theres all different kinds, some are flimsy junk but yours seems to hold up. Thanks
Thanks for watching, There is usually very little spatter, Maybe a few little b.b.'s, Just knock them of with a small chisel, The corner vise is a Yost. Try Yostvises.com, Jimbos garage!
Hey thanks for the cool video I'm planning on making the gate soon and watching you with all your ideas gave me a few new ideas and help me plan out the fall project thanks again
Me and my daughter watched repeating the “JIMBOS GARAGE!” at the beginning, haha! Congratulations, great work!

Thanks Ken. It was good! Jimbo

Don't you just love it when a customer changes there mind half way through a job. Nice work.
It's refreshing to see someone with a clean garage . I think many DIY'ers don't realize a dirty messy garage can be a safety hazard
Gotta love mid project customer changes... Nicely done.
Thanks for watching Moe, Yeah lucky we caught it in time! Jimbo!
Thinking about doing first diy garden gate fabrication at my house. Keep these videos coming! Super helpful!!!
Turned out real nice, really like the look of the fence.
Nice job, lots of work. Thinking about starting to do some fabrication. I have a year of welding at school and 5 years industrial welding.
That was great. I need to do something just like that, so this was a great example of how to get it done.
Thanks for watching James, Just do it!! Jimbo!
Very well done. I am in the process of making security bars for my shop windows. got my corner clamps from HF. cheap enough that I don't mind if they get welded on. sure make a difference when building frames though.
Whew! That's a lot of work for one fella....looks good Jimbo. Thanks for sharing
If I heard you right your artwork is cast iron, I didn't know you could weld cast iron to steel but apparently you can. Thanks for the great videos.
Good project, and the result was beautiful. With a friend we also do this kind of work, people are very happy when they see a nice and clean job well done. Regards.

Ryan Minnick I use the same type decorative cast iron. I rarely preheat it because like you said it’s just decorative.
Looks great Jimbo... Always high quality work!!
Thanks for watching, Jimbos garage!
Jimbo's the MAN!!
I like your style, Jimbo!

viejo, disculpa mi ignorancia, pero jimbo dice castein a las plomadas que van en las varillas, se refiere a estaño, o a que material, pk le he buscado traducción y no le encuentro
Are the decrative metal cast iron or cast steel, I question just because i heard the cast iron would crack in some places?
Do you build the gate the exact size you want and attach Hinges or u have do it smaller including the hinges size?
Which type of Welding you are using? It doesn't need any feeler?
Please tell me Brand and model of welding machine. It was really awesome
Nice job
Jimbo is the fuckin man lol I like this dude!
Jimbo you think you could show how you do your measurements for the gate. How do you know how much space you need for the hindge and latch?
Thanks for watching, It depends on hindges and latches, but usually about
3/8'' to 1/2'' gap for both. Jimbos garage!
Very nice! It Makes me want to head out to the garage and weld something :)
Thanks for watching, Do it! Go weld something! Jimbos garage!

Great video 👍 my main question is how to get clients/jobs? I'm 24 wanting to start a gate business
Nice job Jimbo. I was wondering have you ever weld with a snap on welder I have the mm250sl and I know they are very expensive but work great
Thanks for watching Juan, No never have. Jimbos garage!
Great project! I do have a question. What technique do you use to paint the security screen? I need to repaint my front security door and I'm concerned the holes will clog with paint.

Are you welding cast iron decoration to the steel gate?
nice job u can see from both sides
Thanks for watching, One side is a little more difficult that the other to see through. Jimbos Garage!
Always time for a adult beverage !!

Hey jimbo! Love your work how do you go about quoting a job like this?
Mantap om👍👍
Hello JG, great work. Can you Tell me where to buy the half cut collars?
King metals.com Jimbo!
Try to grind with the flat part of the floppy disc and hit the weld first since is harder than the steel
I just checked on the best corner clamps... what a guy would do to get sponsored by them... I can see why you only have one!
Hey thanks for the cool video I'm planning on making the gate soon and watching you with all your ideas gave me a few new ideas and help me plan out the fall project thanks again
Thanks for watching Douglas, Jimbo!
