Currently working with old cine film of my recently deceased mother in law that was filmed at 17fps I've slowed it so that it's a realistic speed ~80%. The machine learning is making it come alive. It's as emotional as it is magic.
Smooth slo mo and enhance light and colour are unbelievably useful. You get a feel for what shots work best after a while. While i prefer in camera over crank there are many times when normal speed shots need to be stretched to cover underlay.
Excellent analysis. The new slo-mo feature will also have problems with objects that have chaotic or quasi-random motion like flickering flames or falling water as this type of motion is essentially unpredictable, although this is equally true of optical flow.
This is also very helpful when importing 30 FPS videos in 60 FPS projects ! (sadly you'll have to adjust the speed to 99.9% or 100.1% first, or else you can't use the option) Would be awesome to have a machine learning transition now, similar to Flux...
Wow! Perfect. That's exactly the problem I ran into recently. So thank you for teaching us the different solutions that Final Cut Pro offers now. Very helpful.
What’s the best way to clean up the project file after using it? I use the Delete Generated Library Files option but it never cleans up the slow motion part so I am left with project files with large sizes.
yes, yes, yes. It's annoying. I open file project (show package content). And I'm search folder "your folder footage name" -> Analysis Files -> Optical Flow. And I delete it. If anyone knows how to do this faster, write your method)
@@vollcovI’ve been doing that as well but in some instances the file size stays the same and in other instances it makes it small. Don’t know why Apple didn’t think of this when adding it.
It is a bit problematic that a lot of motion causes trouble, since that is precisely when we want to use slow motion…🤪 That being said, I find this feature fantastic. I haven’t experienced any issues so far. I use the Sony FX30 which crops the already cropped pic in slow motion. In the dark that makes slow motion pretty bad in the dark areas. Slowmo in fcpx is way better.
That’s a great point! What you could try if you know while shooting that you want to slow something down more then your camera is capable of is to bump up your shutter speed to reduce the motion blur. I’m pretty sure that’d result in a better outcome.
Great video thanks! Dope feature BUT makes a gigantic library sizes fast 🥵 just have to remember to delete analysis files later (or what they are called)
I have had strange artifacts when using this feature, I have reverted to the standard optical flow for now. Maybe it will work better on new projects and not existing ones
@@tubehead101 Ohhhh you're talking about stabilization. Adding frames and stabilizing are 2 different things. You'll have to use the stabilization feature in FCP. If you didn't already know, it's in your inspector window at the bottom. Give this video on stabilization a watch: ruclips.net/video/mFoCtxn7JUw/видео.html It should be pretty helpful
@@dylanjohndickerson No, actually I don't mean stabilization, I just mean to increase the frame rate so that the shot plays smoother, but at the same speed. As if I shot the clip at 60fps instead of 30. Or does stabilization do that?
using the locked on stabilization + the smooth slo-mo won't work too. the video is stuttering! i turned off the stabilization and everything worked out well
What do you think of the new Smooth Slow Mo feature?

That’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing 🙏
Works great. I got an iPhone recording from driving through a mine. This became a perfect background in slow motion after the upgrade.

Thanks so much, amigo! Yes you're totally right.
Apple did a really nice job with this feature. I've used it a ton already. Really handy when you need a shot to just be a touch longer to fill a gap.
Agreed! I think it was the best new feature of 10.8 in my opinion. Thanks for watching 😊
slow mo creates enormus cache file.
My god this is a total game changer!!!! Thanks Dylan.
Happy to help 😊
Love this feature. It’s super helpful when the normal optical flow/retime editor doesn’t quite cut it.
Which is often in my case. I always go with machine learning now 🤘🏼

You mean like the 'flow' transition that we have? But way better?

Raised an Apple feedback suggestion for it.
Thanks, I had forgotten all about this feature! Will be testing it out now, and have a night job this will be helpful for as limited to 30fps.
Happy to help, Brian 😊 thanks for watching
Great job Dylan. Thanks for sharing these updates!
Thanks for watching! 😄
I think you made the case for how useful it is. I'll use it now.
Awesome! Thanks so much for letting me know 😊
Thank you very much Dylan. You are doing an awesome job. ❤❤🙏🏻
I really appreciate it, Robin! Thanks for the support ❤
I had a 30fps clip that I wanted to use in my 60fps project. I used this ML smoothing to imitate 60fps clip. I have to say it worked rather well.
Great video! Can you apply smooth Slo-Mo via your tablet with M1 chip and continue the project on your intel iMac? Or will the change be lost?
Great question! I'm not sure though.
Thanks Dylan. Very interesting topic!
Thanks for watching and commenting, Steve!
Hey Dylan, smooth slo mo can save us if we don’t shoot in a higher frame rate ! Great video as always ! Many thanks !!
Really appreciate it, Denes! Thanks for watching 👊🏼

I like to shoot 60fps for my standard foootage, 120 for half speed slowmo. This is handy to give me quarter speed.

Really? That doesn't seem right. Even when you export? Or just when viewing back on the timeline?
@@dylanjohndickersonI recently used it for a real estate video and got artifacts as well after exporting.
Still using my Intel MacBook Pro. I guess it’s time to upgrade. I’ve been thinking about it anyway
Do it!
I wish I had a newer mac now. Damn it.
It blows, I know. Well, it'll be ready for you whenever you decide to upgrade. Maybe they'll make it even better by then.
@@dylanjohndickerson Indeed. I hate being out of the loop but then again, I don't have a few grand lying around either. So I will make do. Cheers!
Can you use smooth slow mo to increase the frame rate without slowing down the speed of the clip?
Nope. You have to slow it down to use it.
@@dylanjohndickerson Thanks. So if you just want a smoother shot without retiming it, any way to do that? Like to get rid of jitter on a panning shot.

Very interesting. I haven't tested that out yet so that's good to know. Perhaps there will be a fix for it in a future update.
This is not fare to the rest of us loyal fcpx users, so for that reason I'm going to Davinci Resolve Studio 19
What’s not fair?
