Phoenix was robbed here... he deserved the Oscar for this performance. I'm glad that after Joker this masterpiece comes to the attention of more people.
He was among A listers seniors yet he has an oscar now yet Joaquin doesn't. . Joaquin had bad luck with years of nominations. . He lost to benicio del toro phillip seymour hoffman and daniel day lewis.
@El Chingon Agreed. Someone made a video essay that pointed out how "You Were Never Really Here" was also a deeper Joker movie than "Joker" itself. What inevitably happens is an actor, such as Rami Malek, begins with nuanced projects. And then as they progress, they take bigger paychecks, until they become the superficial Bond villain. More people are going to see comic book movies and 007. So those huge pictures take incredible actors and put them in rubber suits. The only rubber suit that had dignity in my opinion was Christian Bale's. The Dark Knight is a political thriller, much more philosophical than the recent Joker.
Whilst I agree that Phoenix is INSANE in this film - I think Philip Seymour Hoffman really stole the show for me. His performance was so layered, the intensity behind the charisma was just captivating and so enthralling to see. This entire film is a masterpiece.
I actually disagree. Hoffman was spectacular but Phoenix in this gave THE best acting performance of the entire decade. It's so nuanced, eccentric, complex and terrifyingly haunting as well.
Psh, Daniel day lewis, heath ledger and phoenix. The best characters Ive witnessed in us films. Phoneix being maybe the most flexible, ddl the one that can transform the mlst, psh the most subtle and heath, well, his joker was just savage.
The screenplay and the cinematography of this movie is really something. After I read a few negative reviews and a lot of people hating on this, I re-watched it twice and if anything I just like it even more now. Thanks PTA!!
This may not be one of my favorite films but it definitely is one of the most exquisitely filmed and magnificently acted movies ever made. It sticks with you.
I'm speechless, I saw this movie last night and this is one of the best movies ever. Joaquin and the late Philip Seymour are incredible. So frustrated to no see it before
Me personally, there has only been one performance I’ve ever seen as good or better than Joaquin’s performance in this movie. That was Daniel Days role in “ There Will Be Blood “ Joaquin has so so much talent in him, he his hands down my favorite guy 👍🏼👍🏼
Funny thing this movie and There Will Be Blood is directed by the same guy, and yes Daniel was awesome in his role, haven’t seen this one yet but hopefully I will...
I can't believe Rami Malek won the Oscar before Amy Adams and even Joaquin (even though he won the succeeding). Who would have guessed it? It's truly astonishing!
I couldn't deal with what Phoenix has been dealt. His immensly talented brother dies of an oberdose along with the captivating costar of this film, pushing himself in role after challenging role while dealing with loss that I don't even understand. Amazing work.
Something like this will never be made again. It exists in time totally unique. Watch it again and again and let your mind being blown right out of your f*cking scull.
As much as I respect all of Daniel Day Lewis work, Joaquin was robbed of an oscar win that year. Lincoln was probably not a top 3 DDL performance either
No way dude, DDL was great in Lincoln as JP was in Master. Both performances were phenomenal and both could win. There was no shame to lose to each other because, in that year, these two were the only performances that outclassed every other performance. There was no robbery here
I’m with you, I love DDL, but I felt like Phoenix was robbed. DDL even thanked him at the Bafta awards that year and said his performance was incredible during his speech. For PTA tho.. Freddie Quell and Daniel Plainview are some of the greatest characters in film for our generation.
If you came here from Joker, PLEASE give this film a chance! It has incredible performances and explores the "father & son" dynamic in a really interesting way!
No guys it's the trailer of Inherent Vice. Looks like one of the best films ever made, actually one of the most boring ones. That trailer really was a masterpiece.
By far the best film of this decade 2010s. I don't give a shit about the general public not giving it's credit. It's a hard film yes, a film that demands from your mind and that's not what people want today in cinemas, thinking.
I saw Lincoln and I saw this film, and, as much as I know Daniel Day Lewis is a genius worthy of an Oscar any year, I *STILL* believe _Joaquin deserved the award more for this performance._
Freddie Quell is still the best performance of Phoenix's career, with Arthur Fleck being a close second. As many people have already mentioned, he was robbed of an oscar.
What an AMAZING movie....WOW......i just stumbled across it, and i dont even recall it coming out....Joaquin was just off the charts amazing.......hoffman was typically superb.......this movie was a masterpiece of art...
Really wish that I could see that cut of the jailhouse argument shown at 1:51 The original is already amazing, but it would be cool to see another way it could of went
Such a beautifully strange film, seen at least 4 times and showed to multiple confounded friends of mine haha. Some of the best acting in film history is here. It's so cool how PTA evolved as a director after the great Punch-Drunk Love, his movies became less show-offy, even more psychological, classical, slow, visually rich, and basically perfect, much as I love his turn of the century films too. Other than Inherent Vice and Licorice Pizza which were more like his older style.
WOAH! I just watched this and had to leave a comment; really good movies centered around human relationships, behavior and dialogue driven, are kinda rare these days, especially weird ones that capture slices of life that go unnoticed and I really do love the weird ones most of all.
i hate the fact that every comment is about Phoenix and none is about what a fucking great talent we lost when PHS left us. He was amazing in this movie
Good movie, the third act and the final disappointed me. Hoffman great as usual, Phoenix, a beast as always. I Hope He finally gets the Oscar award for his role on Joker!
The "chemistry" between Joaquin and Philip is amazing. I have so many questions? We know Quell is from Lynn, MA (maybe)? I think the sand woman at the end represents his mother, not his sweetheart.
When I first saw this movie it just rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't like it, and then about a year after something compelled me to watch it again and I thought it was a masterpiece. And on a third viewing I was like this might be the greatest movie ever.

Javier Fernandez 100%!! You are so right. Phoenix’s performance in this is masterful (lol)
Yeah I just watched this trailer because Joker was dreadful but Phoenix was great
You clearly haven't seen Lincoln
I love Phoenix but Lewis nailed it in Lincoln
@@stefantiosavljevic2630 Lewis had to mimic a real person. Joaquin had the harder job

Absolute masterpiece. The shot from off the bow of the boat while the music plays is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen.
This is was the biggest piece of shit ever🥲🥲 i Watched the movie because of this comment and i lost 2.5 hours of my life
Never saw this, but There Will Be Blood is one of my top 5. Does this movie hold up in 2024?
Wow what a cast. Even young Rami Malek was here!
PANoramic TV I've seen this film more than 6 times and I just realized when I saw your comment that Rami Malik was in this movie.

Tiki80 but also Joaquin called the Oscars bullshit, which is a fact
Also a young Jillian Bell, from Workaholics fame.
Joaquin and Philip both deserved so much more praise for their incredible roles
And Amy!
Still watching this masterpiece in 2019. Rip Philip Seymour Hoffman we will always remember you.
Fn Phenomenal as always. One of the greatest. As is Pheonix
After joker (2019)
This film is one that has stayed in my mind for years. It was magnificent, how it didn't get more notoriety is beyond me.
Maybe* because it was adapted from the beginnings of scientology and L.Ron , Hubbard . Maybe??
Joaquin phoenix's performance in this film is even more ambiguous than joker.
His performance here is by far his best. Joker was fine but this is next level shit.
Yeah. I love Daniel Day-Lewis, but Phoenix hands down, should've won Best Actor.
