Calling Black Kids "Oreo"

  • Have you ever been called or heard someone called an "Oreo?" These racialized names make me really frustrated, angry really. My son talked to me about being called an Oreo and how he made sense of it. Well, his reasoning didn't make much sense, so mama had to school him. The term is rooted in the lie that Black people are inferior and if they excel that means they are "acting White." I share why this thinking is flawed and not rooted in history or reality.

So then being uneducated is better? We aren’t supposed to have good language skills otherwise you’re labeled an Oreo. How screwed up is that? I was in the local Chinese take out and the people who were coming in to order food all sounded as if they never attended a school in their life or ever used a dictionary and these were adults and Americans in NYC. Cursing and slang throughout all the conversations. They obviously weren’t Oreo’s.😂

I had been questioned by both white and black people about myself. When I was little, my white friends asked me why I don’t sound like or act like the other black kids in our school. (The majority of the black kids acted street and tried to be tough. So I wasn’t too offended by their question because they were ignorant of the different variations of black people.) I responded, “because I wasn’t raised to act that way. My parents taught me about etiquette and respect.” I briefly explained that just like white people, black people come from different backgrounds. As for the black people, one of my cousins referred me as an Oreo because I speak properly. I asked him, “So only white people can speak proper English? Gee way to empower the black community... Don’t be educated because it’s a “white thing”! And we don’t want to be like white people now do we?” He told me I was being too sensitive about his jab, but I just told him that I find it annoying that in order to be “black” you have to behave and act like a certain way. The funny thing is I’m mixed with 5 different ethnicities, but I’m more predominantly black and native. However, I had decided to identify with all of them, but didn’t stick to one group. I had gotten tired of the apparent limitations of what was expected out of a black person from both white and black perspectives. One expecting to see to see a stereotype and the other basically saying “I’m not a real black person” (I’ve been judged more often by other black people than I ever had with white). Basically, I said “fuck it. I don’t exclusively belong to one ethnic group.” This gave me the insight to spot some hypocrisy and issues that are usually ignored in the black community. As well as allowing me to explore other cultures of my different ethnic backgrounds.

I was born and raised in predominantly black city. Many of my classmates were smart and well spoken as we were in the higher achieving classes from first grade on. I remember being told many times that I had good diction. No one was accused of “acting white” because they were high achieving. When I heard the term “Oreo” it was referencing black people who were perceived as self loathing and didn’t acknowledge or associate with other black people, smart or otherwise.

Lol "professor" black professors in Morocco. What kind of Afro-nationalist fairy tale is this? Historically, the University Of Al Quaraouiyine can be considered as one of the first signs of higher education, but not completely, because like other universities after them, they were controlled and administered by the church, and this to a large extent prohibited the teaching of what could contradict Islam or Christianity and did not accept those who were not of a given religion. The first universities in the more modern sense, where there was freedom of ideals and speech, were founded half a millennium later in Prague and Krakow, although perhaps because today's Western universities are more orthodox in liberalism and progressivism, the comparison with the first religious universities is perhaps more appropriate.

I think the importance is on how it is baing said. Was it said derogatorily? It just means you don't behave typically. Like, for example, if you look asian, have an aversion to spice, prefer your food bland and loves country music, other asians will call you a banana 🍌. It doesn't automatically mean something is wrong with you.
People try to create stupid labels to communicate what they mean without explaining all the time.
People need not be too uptight about it. You are not oppressed if you are not being oppressed.

OReo, a Black person who is regarded as having adopted the attitudes, VALUES, and behavior thought to be characteristic of middle-class white society, often at the expense of their own heritage. It seems the definition has been watered down lately to attack any black person trying to better themselves. It wasn’t supposed to be about smarts or being able to communicate. Mlk and Malcolm x would not have been called Oreos. Maybe Carlton but not uncle Phil and aunt viv.

What is wrong with a person liking people of another race? Like there aren’t mixed families all over this country. So do you mean like all the white college kids out there now who hate being white?
