I LOVE your book! So much profound and practical wisdom. The way you define and explain what's happening in the body had me on tears on several occasions. Thank you for the work you do.
Yes!! I've heard about this book, but never knew exactly what it was about. I am a bodyworker and see again and again from my practice how "the body keeps the score" in our behavior and the storing of emotions/trauma/etc. So glad there is a somatically-based book about anti-racism! I have definitely found, as a white-bodied person trying to be more conscious of the racist society I was socialized, white privilege, and my own implicit biases, that simply "intellectually learning" about racism, though important, has not helped me overcome the visceral "white guilt and shame" that lives in my body, and that I sometimes feel come out in social interactions completely unconsciously (adding to more white guilt and shame...) Have been looking for more tools to overcome this cycle and continue my learning. Thanks for this! Downloading book now!
absolutely crucial to do this work. I am very happy to have a group to read and PRACTICE, and I would agree with resmva's recommendation not to mix groups. I think us white bodied people need to do the work on our own.
Kira! I always love and appreciate your wise words and teachings-- and did over 20 years ago when we worked together. I'd read Menakem's book and your analysis adds much to this important body of work. Hope your family is well--Deb Habib
Hello Dr. Banks, I’m curious if you could give me the name in writing of the person you mention ( Adofo?) who came up with the piano metaphor you mention. Thank you so much for your work.
Here in October 2020 - I so need to read this book. It was sold out a few months ago when I went to bookstore. I need to try again or order it as soon as I get a couple more dollars.
Sis thank you so for the video. I am so humbled by your review

Thank you for making this review! I want to tell everyone about the book, and this makes it easier.
I'm on chapter 7 and so moved by it to action around trauma. I assign Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome to my students.
I will have to read this book.
