I started crocheting about 2 months ago and started with a really cheap generic set from Amazon. Then a few weeks later, I purchased the Clover 6.0mm hook to try it out and what a difference! I couldn’t believe how much faster/easier it was to crochet when you use a good hook.
The Prym hooks work up similarly to the clover for half the price!!!
Clover is my absolute favior
Exactly what I did! Little did I know what a variety is out there but my Clover 3mm is lovely so I’m going to start getting more sizes
I absolutely LOVE MY CLOVER hooks! The only problem I have is I have my dads big hands. I have one furls hook that I literally just bought I really like it, but it's not my clover hook.
Juan, you’re not only a yarn enabler. Before your video was even half way, I ordered a set of the Prym hooks!
If you get any squeaking with these hooks, try rubbing them with a dryer sheet. It usually helps!
Lol 😂❤
You won't be sorry prym are great
I love mine but swop from them to the clover amour because some yarn doesn’t like Prym for some reason.
I noticed the Prym hooks were plastic, but see they also come in metal. Does anyone have any thought on plastic over metal? I have always used metal and like them. My favorite right now are the Clover.
Furls are my absolute favorite hooks. I have damaged hands and could not crochet without them. I use them almost exclusively. Not to mention they are beautiful. I love them.❤
To each their own. 🙂
I’m a FURLS person also! Ends of the earth for me! I just ordered my very last 2 Odyssey hooks :( discontinuing them now
Juan!!! You just saved me so much money by helping me avoid the furls hooks. Finally an honest review of them ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have furls but I'd never buy em again. The hook part breaks pretty easily in my opinion.
I bought a Furls and ugh! It splits yarns like crazy. It will go in the “hope it’s a collectible” pile.
@@etorres1890 I’ve been so tempted but then have to remind myself that I don’t need something because my favorites are recommending it. I’ve been crocheting a long time and always go back to my clover hooks! I am going to try the prim hooks though because they are fairly priced!
Yes, of course I ordered Prym hooks. If anyone asks, I’m going to say you hypnotized me 😊
Hi Juan. This by far was one of the absolute best tutorial on crochet hooks that I have ever seen. It was so very thorough and you gave so many good and bad points of why or why not to use each brand. Way to go Juan! Thank you!
I love the Susan Bates in-line hooks. I’m left handed too. The problem with the Prim hooks is that they are plastic and don’t glide as well as metal. Otherwise I like them.
@@susantremberth500 i am also left handed and I also love inline hooks! The Susan Bates is okay I feel like a get more drag and snag with them over the prym ergonomic hooks. I don't know why but I like the plastic of the prym.. I also like the luxury ergonomic hooks from hobby lobby
Thank you for showing all your hooks. I started with Susan Bates and still use them.
Hey Juan, You are so right about everyone has their own like and dislikes. With that said, I really like how you explain each brand of hook, why you like or dislike a hook it's very informational.
Oh, those really tiny hooks. I believe they are used in lace work but don't quote me.
I have been crocheting for about 50 years and currently have 3 sets of boye hooks. Mine, my mom's and my grandmother's. That is about all I use. I bought mine at a Lee Wards back in the 80's. I also have some hero hooks that were my grandmother's. I cannot imagine buying new one's. Thanks for the review.❤
I agree about the Furls (and Ommi) hooks. I’m loving the Tulip Red hooks right now!!
i agree there are hooks for all i prefer the boye hooks i do not care for susan bates and gave them all away to friends i have a few clover but there are all types of hooks like all kinds of yarn there is something for everyone for sure.
Juan, I could not believe when you choose Prym hooks as your favorite. Then later your said you have big hands. That must be why they work so well for you. I bought one hook to try it (J hook), and it hurts my wrist to use it. I have small hands, I think it is because the shaft is too long. I have tried holding up higher but it is not comfortable. I learn to crochet with a Susan Bates inline hook, and was looking for a good inline ergonomic hook, still looking. The couple of Boye I have are over 20 years old and I seldom use them. I will have to go check them out. I don't use because they so heavy. Great video.
I too have small hands, and LOVE the Pryms.
You might want to try hiyahiya hooks. They are pretty wonderful. Smoother than any I’ve used
LOVE HiyaHiya! I asked my husband for a set last Christmas. At the recommendation from Ross @smellslikeyarn, I also tried Zing hooks from Knitter’s Pride. They’re as good as the HiyaHiya!
Your video made my day! When you described the WeDot Crochet Hooks and the twists and turns that your hand is forced to do, I almost crashed the car laughing!!! I immediately at the next red light, ordered the Prym hooks. I am a relatively new crocheter but an avid one already. Found you through Crystals website. You are awesome. Love your honesty and your “East Coast” style❤️looking forward to getting my new hooks today and finishing my latest project!! Just love your channel and love of purple ❤️🌈
I learned to crochet with my mama's (complete set) S. Bates hooks, that's all I used until my daughter gifted me the Clover set. I love my Clover and S. Bates. The Furls are beautiful buuuut way to much money for me. Thx for the video.
I have a #1 steel Boye hook . It says "U.S.A. 35 cents" on the back! It's the first crochet hook I ever bought when I decided to teach myself how to crochet. That was July 1971.
Those tiny steel hooks you wondered about are for crocheting doilies, table runners, curtains, wall hangings, tablecloths.,.....I've made all of those things.
You're right.....old Boye hooks are terrific. I recently bought the same set you showed & I can sure tell a difference between them & my old Boye hooks!
I also have a size C Hero hook that says it was made in Germany.
Despite crocheting 52 years, I never gave a thought (until recently)to any differences in hooks....but there IS. And I sure never equated beveling to helping....I'll pay more attention from now on!
Juan I like the Dots hooks I go to them when I run out of Clover Amore and I am a pencil holder of the hook and I don’t have a lot of movement the the hook
I'm 71 years old and started crocheting about age of 18 I bought hooks at garage sales metal hooks I have all sizes and at auctions I have hooks someone made wooden handles I love them all
Boye is my very favorite hooks. Of course my hooks are dated in the 1970's. I have one that I have just about worn all the paint off of it. I will not give up my Boye hooks although I have tried several other types. And none of my Boyes came near $10 in price. By the way the steel Boyes are crochet hooks for thread crochet. Making doilies and such.
I’m a Susan Bates girl all the way. I like the inline hook vs the tapered hook. And the pointy head for getting into stitches.
I love my tulip hooks ! Thanks Juan as always 🧶😜🙌🏻
I liked your review, Juan . I just recently got a prym hook. I loved it so much that I ordered a set. I don't seem to hold them as tight as I do the others
I can't use my mom's hooks anymore because of arthritis.
Finally someone who agrees with me on the furl hooks. I wanted one so bad listening to all the hype about them. For my birthday I told my son I wanted one. He was so sweet and got me three. I started working with them and didn’t like them at all. After a few rows I was back to my tulip or clover hooks. Now they are decor not to be ever used again. Your review was great. Never tried a prym hook and I can c buying in the future. Another hook I do not like are the dot hooks. The dots on them actually rub on my hand and irritate it
Hi Juan , I am so enjoying your channel 💜💜💜
I would love to really see all of your nelson wood hooks and give a demonstration on using them a different weight yarns.
Very informative and well done video!!!
Almost a year later, I watched this video and checked my Boye hooks (I don't use any more) and they are manufactured/stamped USA. I only switched because I love the ergonomic hooks. Tulip and Clover brands.
As someone pretty new to crochet, this was SUPER helpful! Thank you.
I love the Prym and the Susan Bates. I also like the long hooks and I’m a pencil grip. They’re just more comfortable. Have a good night.❤
I have one of my Mimi's old Susan Bates Silvalume hooks and her Tunisian Hook. They are some of my favorites.
Hi, it’s so much fun to see what hooks other people use. I have very small hands, so I love my tulips, my clovers, and my beloved Susan date.……… both the regular and the soft handled ones. These hooks fit my hands perfectly, and I love them. I do have for oddessys, but seldom use them,
Thank you for the hook review. I have my old faithful I bought them in Mexico it the pate 80s, I always look at new hooks but never buy any 😂
Love my Prim hooks
Hello. Do your pryms squeak a lot with acrylic?
Hi Juan! I almost died laughing when you said "I mean...did they run this under a truck before they packed it? I'm just saying." 🤣🤣🤣 Great review! 10/10 must watch! This is my second comment on the same video! Too funny! ALL the things, guys!
I have the Amazon ones you showed that you said need bezels on them and they are my favorite over clover and prym actually haha! I love how long the handle is and I don’t have that much issue with slipping stitches myself
I love knitter's pride very smooth :))
I only use susan bates and clover hooks they are the BOMB.
I love "All things Juan" great video. Thanks!
I use the silver small Boye crochet hooks with crochet thread. I mostly use size 10 thread with them.
Your “Hookerpalooza” was awesome!!!
I gotta say I was so excited for the Prym’s hooks. Then I bought a few at once and realized they kinda drag and don’t flow with the fiber like my clover Amours do. I was so mad I spent all that money but they are definitely gorgeous 👏🏼
I have my moms Boye hooks from the 1970s they are my favorite hooks to use.
When I first showed interest in knitting and crocheting. My hubs and 23 yr old grandson hit a yard sale up where we live and got a huge box of redheart and a few hooks and neddles. I started knitting first. Then tried my luck with crochet. There was 1 boye hook and 2 Susan bates .so those are my favorites. I did get a set of clover.. I use them on certain projects or certain yarn. Thanks for showing us your hooks .
Hello Juan! Crystal from bag of crochet mention your vlog. very informativr,
I have old set of boye hooks I love them I had for years
I have some Hero, Boye, and Susan Bates hooks that I inherited from my Grandma after she passed. They are probably all the original versions. They are stored in an old ball and roller bearing can that has a Martha Washington Presidential Series Stamp that was issued in May 5, 1938 on it. So yeah... they are antique.
Thanks for your comments on Furls... I agree, was super disappointed that I kept dropping stitches with the Furls. I was raised on Grandma's Boye hooks... switched to Amour and Tulip a few years back... but have to say I was SOOOOOO HAPPY with the Susan Bates hooks when I tried them recently! They were like an answer to a prayer, after 40 years of crochet I no longer had issues with dropping stitches at all! I guess the inline hook is what works for the way I crochet. Would like to try Prym hooks as they are inline as well... but a bit hybrid so I'll start with buying one hook first.
Every time I try different brand hooks, I always go back to the Susan Bates, even their plastic ones work better for me than any other brand!
I do have a set of wooden hooks a lantern moon set, and they crochet very loosely. I love the prym and the clover, and I also love the dots set and knitters pride and hobby lobby sets
I love Hero hooks too. They don't hurt my hands but are hard to find.
Hey there,,, I have lots of hooks , and lots of the same sizes. Many were gifts that I don't really use,, they have akeward handles. I end up using the same 2 most of the time
I absolutely love my clover hooks
Thanks for the review. I also use Prym hooks due to hand pain and it has been helpful. My other set are the clovers.
I love my clover hooks but I really want to try the Prym hooks after watching this review. I also really like my Tulip hooks.
This is the best hooks review i've ever seen, the details you gave us is never talk of and i now really understand why som hooks are uncomfortable to use.
i,m a woman but i have a big hand too and have difficulty in finding long good hooks, my favourite is Clover but i wish they could make it longer or make it only metal then i could add those ergonomy handle and it will be longer, my second is prym because it is long but it doesn't work well with all types of yarn , for e.x cotton and so on. I've tried so many but i've yet to find any better than Clover and Prym for me, unfortunately i can not get my hands on Hero but hope one day i wll be able to .
Thank you so much for this amazing info and best review❤❤❤❤
I agree about the boye hooks, I have a set from the 1970’s and made in the USA and I have the new ones and the older ones are better
Thank you, very informative. I now know what to look for when buying new hooks.
Love love love your channel❤ thank you for putting a smile on all of are faces and thank you for inspiring us all ❤❤
I've seen several RUclipsrs who swear by Furls but then when they demonstrate something, the yarn is constantly falling off their hook! It looks like such a struggle. But I'm sure they work for some people.
Everyone has to find what works for them.. Clover Amour is my choice because smaller hands, longer hooks hit me on the inner wrist,, not comfortable at all for me!
Prym has risen to the top quickly for me as my go-to hook. I definitely need to run out and get more. Great video showcasing and explaining why you did/didn't care for the specific types of hooks.
I'm in england hi,I like the clover hooks best x
My hands are probably less than half the size of yours, Juan, and I adore the Prym over Clover. Clovers are a dream to crochet with because they are so smooooth but I find the longer shaft on the prym better. I will happily use both though. For amigurumi I prefer the clover but for the every day its the Prym for me. I love those flat handled cheap-ass hooks you showed. LOL I tried to love the beach wood but naw, not for me. They are crazy light though. I find that being able to use multiple hooks styles helps with hand fatigue and I change hooks frequently with no issues. Love you channel!!! P.S. please link the case you have your clovers in 🙂
Loops and threats hooks are really good
i just purchased my first prym hook. The tip is similar susan bates. My favorite are susan bates with the black grip. They glide for me. I have one furls. I have some boyds and some clover hooks. I have a set of ergonomic hooks. They are definitely short like the clover.
I like the clover j hook. I have that one too. But for certain yarns.
My first hooks were Boye and I couldn't work with them as they were too hard on my hands. I got a set of Clover knock-offs, and they are the most comfortable hook. I just ordered my first Clover hook and can't wait to work with it.
Thanks Juan for a great review. I actually was crocheting all day yesterday; noticed the yarn was not being grabbed by the hook it kept slipping. Just thought it was me. I was wondering what the difference was in all these different hooks. Well now I know. Looks like I’ll be getting a better set ; thanks Juan The Enabler 😂. Gayle
I have some red heart metal hooks I got at a thrift store. They are my favorite hooks. I also have a set of metal Leisure Arts hooks from England that were gifted to me in the 80's. The yarn glides on them so nicely.💜
My faves so far are the Yarnology ergonomic multicolor hooks. I have really small hands so they work well for me. I haven't found any metal ones that I actually like.
The Prym hooks were my favorite before I used Clover because Clover is another kind of smooth with the brushed aluminum head, but my Prym hook’s coating rubbed off or something because it used to be smooth but now I don’t feel anything other than dragging and pulling, however the larger sizes are really good for plush chunky yarn, I use my 10mm hook all the time, it’s my favorite blanket crochet hook too, alongside my clover 8mm
Juan my favorite hooks are Susan Bates. I am going to try the Prym when I go to Michaels again. I don’t like the Boye hooks. Tried them, but they were difficult to work with. Thanks for sharing the different hooks with us. Very helpful.
Juan, I wanted to let you know that on your recommendation I decided to try out the Prym hooks. I got the larger set 7mm and up (on sale at Michael's, of course) and I love them! My go to hooks for 6mm and below is still my Clover set, but I wasn’t as impressed with the larger sized plastic Clover hooks, they didn’t flow as smoothly as the smaller set. The larger Prym set on the other hand are smooth as butter and are now my go to. Thanks for the great suggestion!
Clovers I love them
I used a razor and sliced the rubber handles off of my Clover hooks and made longer ones with polymer clay. A bit of a slog, but a great result because there is just something about the Clover hooks that makes me crochet faster... the handle was the only downside.
I have an old boye 4.0mm hook that has 15 cents marked on the handle. I like it a lot. I've not tried the Michael's hooks. I have a couple furls but I am not fond of them. I like the Susan Bates hooks. Thanks for the review.
I’m using an I hook from Boye made in the USA, this is an older hook for sure. I love the Boye hooks. And I saw exactly what you were showing about the heads.
Prym hooks are my favorite also Susan Bates are want I earned to crochet with and they're my second favs
Hi. Do you find the Prym squeaky with acrylic?
@@Danceswithfishes I have never had that problem but I don't crochet tight and I crochet with many acrylic
@@darlenejessup4176 thanks. I wonder why mine squeak 😥
@@Danceswithfishes you might want to ask Juan the yarn addict or Jenn at the yarn geek on RUclips, cause I have no idea
Thanks for doing and sharing your opinion on hooks. I have an inexpensive set and may need to invest in better hooks.
I had the set of Prim hooks, liked the way they worked the yarn, But the squeak drove me crazy. Gave them to my daughter, she loves them. Plastic hooks squeak. I love my Susan Bates hooks, mine are all over 50 years old and they are wonderful. Made in the USA by COATS ABS CLARK. I have sets of Boye hooks also all very old and made in the USA. I also use wooden crochet hooks, I love them. Knit Picks are a good brand. The small Boys hooks in the set you have are for crocheting with crochet cotton thread. Fancy doilies and fine lace with the size 10 and up. I learned to crochet with these hooks when I was 5 years old by my mom and grandmother, I'm 76 now. Love your. videos, you love yarns and crochet and your face lights up when you talk about your projects that you are making and have made.
I love the Prym series too for both knitting and crocheting. I do have the older Boye hooks for lace yarns that I thrifted for next to nothing and I LOVE working with them whenever I do lace work. After my Prym's I do work with bamboo hooks and knitting needles. Been crocheting and knitting for some 46 years now.
My favs are Clover Amour and Tulip.
I bought my Pryms as a set, 2 sets with 5 each. I would recommend buying them like that with a coupon so they come out cheaper than individually.
I love the Furls Odyssey hooks. I’m sorry I couldn’t acquire the entire line before they were discontinued. I have the whole set of the Furls resin hooks and I find they only work on a small selection of yarn, as well as the streamline wooden hooks. I also use the Pyrm hooks and love how they fit in my hand. I have large hands and hate how the shorter hooks poke my palms.
I have 1 Hero hook I saved from a garage sale for 10 cents. I can't use straight hooks anymore but still have my mom's hooks. (Susan Bates & Boye). My favorites are Clover with erogomic handles. I only use aluminum hooks.
I cannot use hero or susan bates too thin for me to hold and the metal irritates my skin. I need thick grip ergonomic hooks. Prym is also my favorit. Addi is nice to hold but the metal part is too short for me to crochet. I bought some furls when I was in the States but dropped two and broke them in no time. Thank you Juan. I heard from you through Crystal. Love you both.
I have small hands, and so I love my Clover Amours.
Juan! I'm finally starting to get a few rows completed in single crochet. Now I'm looking for the "perfect" hook. 😆 Is it possible? As a newbie, I'm loving your content. ❤
Love long necks and ergonomic!
I started a couple months ago with Amazon aluminum hooks, and they did their job. Got me started with a new love! Then I lost my 5mm, that I later found, but only after I got my 5mm Yarnology hook. I LOVE IT! I am excited to find better aluminum hooks to try also. Oh heck,I'll try anything I can. 😁
I did try a friends clover hooks and after a few hours, I knew they weren't for me. Shaft is short, and the handle was like a chunk-o-junk in my palm. Straight aluminum float in my hand. In all fairness, my wrist and hand are a hot mess after an accident. I still want to collect all the pretties! 😊
Thank you . I was wondering why on some hooks. I have to you my wrist more. I thought it was the yarn. Know this makes sense.
Hi I use the Boye hooks love them, but they are the older. My Temu hooks are wonderful, I have no marks on the like yours. I can use all the hooks, but will say I have sim German ones that are extremely big. Over all I loved this video, you were definitely a good find.
Juan, I ordered a Prym size H & J hooks from Amazon not 10 minutes into your video! Thank you for this tutorial on hooks. It was excellent!
I like these. I use them
I use furls, but the wood streamlined are my favorite and the metal streamline. I think those are more like prym.
I’ll call myself a hook collector…I’ve gifted all except three of my hero hooks but, I’ve Boye, Susan Bates all the older ones. Anchor, Woodward, Gem, Coats&Clark and Clovers the regular ones plus some I can’t remember the make but will check..I’ve Furls, Nelsonwood, Clover Amour, Yarnology, Susan Bates, Ommi and Prym all ergonomic and I love them but Prym and Ommi are my absolute favorites, those brands are the least expensive but those are the ones I reach for daily.
Thank you so much for this hook review, it was great and you did an excellent job on it. Cheers.
Clover are my favorite!
Awesome review especially for a beginner like myself. When you said “Look at that quality…did they run this hook under a truck before they packed it”😂🤣. I appreciate this video and your experience. Unfortunately I still don’t have a favorite hook because I don’t have enough of them. Thanks for sharing🤗
The prim are my favorite ❤
I have learned a lot of new info about the different types of hooks that I didn’t know. Thinking about giving the Prym hooks a try.❤😊
I've noticed that Boye hooks have gone down in quality. My favorites are the Lite up hooks from the Crochet Dude. I bought them years ago and I know that Joann's still carries them but sometimes they are out of stock.
Good morning Juan . Thank you for sharing. 🧶
