Personally I prefer this format of video. There are so many channels showing the same new releases it’s more interesting to me to see and hear about the items going into Mikes collection and why.
Maybe you could send that jazz record seller with regrets a bottle of bourbon. He could probably use it. 😃 It's fun to see what the record store owners buy for their collections. Have a great week.
Regarding VMP releases, I LOVE the small booklets, great essays full of information, specially great when talking about semi obscure Soul/Funk records that VMP usually releases.
Me too! I love reading the little books, gets me more into the album and love finding out more info. Always read while I’m doing my first listen and occasionally go back to them. I agree it’s a shame they can cause warps but other than that it’s a nice bonus in my opinion, nicely presented too.
Be a good person, and sell that Kirk LP back to the seller. Empathy my friend, will reward you x 1000.
I offered him a trade for other key records he had that I wanted. He passed but maybe in the future. You never know.
agreed 1000 percent
People who keep their records sealed should be called cover or jacket collectors. Call me old fashioned, but records are for music and playing. If I ever accumulate something sealed I don’t want I sell it or trade it so someone else can enjoy it and I can find something I’ll actually listen to.
Could we not gatekeep a fun hobby pls
I can see holding onto a sealed record for value. But those people are in it for the money and not for the music if their sole focus is collecting sealed copies. I've seen the same where people buy a sealed video game collection. I wonder what the point is other than looking at the boxes and a speculative investment with plans to sell later.
I have some sealed lps. Many times I double dip and just open one to play. I don't sell the unopened ones. I just keep them just incase one gets damaged.
I totally agree! It's a waste of vinyl to not play it! And besides there's scores of people who need a copy to play, and you have some guy holding it doing nothing with t!
yeah it also reminds me of people collecting old toys and action figures, where they keep them in the original packaging to maintain the value. Some people collect just for the sake of collecting. I can understand it but as a music fan I do find it somewhat offensive.
Thumbs up for keeping these videos going.. enjoy learning about what you like to keep for yourself vs. sell in the store.
I think that VMP Ornette Coleman is special too (I did a video on it) I read that essay/book. That record is so important it deserves it. The record changed American music so people new to it album have a well written background.
THAT SAID - how they ship it with the record maybe could be improved as you said. Don’t want the warps.
Please keep up this series. It’s super interesting. It would also be cool mention where all of these are sourced (if you can), ie ebay, Discogs, etc. or even to do a series where you go through best Discogs best eBay best private seller purchases you’ve made. Just a thought, but yes please keep these up!
This is enjoyable to watch since you are a huge music fan and record collector besides owning one of the best record stores anywhere. Learn a lot about issues.
I've been unsuccessfully trying to find Dominique Fils Aimé's album Nameless on new vinyl for a while.
I picked up Pat Martino's Baiyina, the OJC version, back when it could be had for $15. It's a fabulous album. Steve Hoffman insists that 99% of the 80's OJCs are all analog (he says he's seen the mastering notes and they only used a digital transfer if the analog tapes were too far gone to use. Sadly the OJC is now $75 and up for the OJC.
Both copies sent by VMP had nasty seam splits. Twice. They really need to revaluate how they are packaging things.
Sometimes I find you using a term that I'm sure you have explained to death in the past, but many viewers may not know what you mean. In this case, what exactly is a "Tippon" jacket and what makes it so special?

that record is not great because of its "historical significance" or because Miles Davis is playing on it, it is great because it has some of the best Jazz ever recorded ever on it by the unique CHARLIE PARKER !
I read the essays. I can’t say that they’ve warped any of my records.
Nebraska is a great album, even if you're not a huge Springsteen fan. The 2014/15ish reissue around the time of the box sets is very good, i recall they used the plangent process to improve the speed stability, since it was recorded on a portable tape machine. Remastered by Chris Bellman.
Vmp is pretty sweet, I don’t think they’re are worth some of the resale prices but still great
Haven't had a chance to listen to the full Nebraska album, but Atlantic City and Highway Patrolman both amazing songs. Very excited for this one.
Great video
Thank you Michael
Awesome job
I'm hoping for reissues of the 80's progressive jazz such as Pat Martino.
Cool to hear more about what you, as a collector, get excited about. I think most subscribers to your channel share your enthusiasm for vinyl (even if, sadly, we don't all have the same resources!).
Do you ever buy more current Jazz on vinyl. I see a lot of 60's and earlier Jazz but not a lot from the 90's to now. Like Kenny Garrett, Joshua Redman, Kenny Washington, Akira Tana, Arturo O'Farrill, The Baylor Project etc? It would be cool if ya did.
I bought up the same topic about the 80's and 90's like Garrett, Marsalis, Blakey and others during one of his unboxings and his response was like there was no good Jazz during that time. I thought it was such BS
@@mr.jazzfusionhiphop1298 Dang that's harsh. Probably just needs the exposure. I worked at a Jazz club in the SF bay area and gained a great appreciation for the newer stuff and wish it was more supported.
NEBRASKA IS HIS BEST ALBUM, FULL STOP.
Hi, how does the Ornette Coleman VMP compare against the ORG and Speakers Corner versions available? This series is great and appreciated, Thanks.
Michael 45 reads them - maybe he’s the only one
No Taylor Swift 4 versions of the same album in your collection ? Watching from London.
Can't understand not selling it back. You more than 99 percent of the people out there. Now you have a little bit more. Good on you mate.
The VMP releases I have sound incredible. I should probably get more of em.
That Roland Kirk is cherry.
I have, by and large, been quite pleased with VMP. While I have grown weary of Bruce over the years -- this is what you sometimes get when you saw someone back in the day -- Nebraska is stellar, much better than the OG, even though he seems overly self-serious at times. Can't wait for Live at the Old Quarter. VMP had a misstep with FTSOTS, an album that Townes disowned, when any other Poppy album would have been welcomed with arms opened wide.
Please more deep weeds, fascinating, living in the UK most of this jazz is unobtainium
I enjoyed this deeper dive into some of your purchases. Interesting and informative
That Ornette is really nice.
What I can't figure out is why my browser seems to lock up every time I try to go to to look at joining their record club. This isn't a one-time thing and it happens maybe all of the time. I've never been able to sign up.
Does this happen to anyone else?

I love Nebraska it’s my favorite.
I hate the olbies
I’m jealous of you Mike I love you lol
Yes, An AAA reissue of Birth of Cool would be great to have. Hey Mike a quick question: I love Mono presses but know there is a time frame in the 60s when the Mono that was made was not true Mono and was basically they just compressed the stereo mix into Mono. Typically, what years do we need to avoid buying Mono when they doing this? likewise, what are the early yrs to avoid buying stereo as this was fake stereo? Great video, BTW- the only question that went thru my mind was the price you paid for those lps? Even if you broke it down under 100/over 100/over 250?
Nebraska is the only Bruce Springsteen record I can voluntarily listen to. :) Also, do you have a quadraphonic decoder, ran to separate amps and 3rd, 4th speakers? If there were enough Quad records out there, I'd try it.

I love that Ornette Coleman record. I have other great Ornette albums as well. He helped make jazz more accessible for many. My fav Bruce album is Asbury Park and Darkness On The Edge Of Town
Great video Mike! Always excited to hear what you find in the wild to add to your collection. I will say, I would totally watch a video showing your "sleepfest" finds as well! I think that'd be fun too.
Good stuff. The compare/contrast and backstories most definitely help collectors.
💯💯💯💯
Yes keep doing them. They are as good as your Thursday morning must see video. Perhaps you could designate a certain day of the week for this video?
I'm not a "Springsteen" fan either, but I do have and like "Born in USA "! A lot of People shit on that one too!
Do you own any 78rpm records?
Some.
I love the speakers corner reissue of that Ornette Coleman. Great listen!
Cool post Mike. Thanks for sharing and keep up the series. Cheers
Mike...So when comparing your personal copy with stuff that comes in the store, do you ever take the best cover and marry it with the best LP (i.e. Frankenstein)? That is if they are the same pressing?
Yes. If it's the exact pressing.
Did you even bother comparing the VMP Nebraska to the OG? Seems like the word “digital” turned you off. The VMP pressing uses the same “Plangent” source from the Nebraska in the Springsteen 2014 box. It SMOKES your OG “analog” 1982 pressing.
I did. The VMP didn’t seam like it smoked anything.
Have not compared yet, but I will say that the Greetings From Asbury Park press reissue using that Plangent Process was a wonderful listen. Looking forward to comparing the others.
I love that Charlie Parker Dial record - fantastic cover too
Winner, winner, chicken dinner! 🎉
Go into the weeds Mike….. they’re the fun ones to see
Good stuff. New records discovered for me.
Fun and informative video!
This is a great series! keep them coming please
More please.
Brah triple threat 🤯🫣🫢
I’ve been looking for that dial as well, very nice .
Keep ‘em coming mike
