- I got the chance go record digging at the iconic record store Amoeba in Los Angeles Hollywood California, stick around to see what I thought about the famous music store and find out what’s in my bag.

So you did like the shop or didn't? I'm sort of put off by few things you said having previously put a visit virtually top of my bucket list. Some things seem too good to be true. Where's the fun work of finding a bargain there compared to a charity shop or record fair? I think I'd question the curation or lack of it. Kinda reminds me of hmv or when tower was in London. Ho hum. As long as you are reasonably happy. Travelling with records on planes, trains isn't the easiest either.
No travelling with records is always worrying 😬
I did like it there, I did, but will I travel all the way back there, no. If it was local to me I would most likely go every day or every other day. Will you find a bargain, probably not, everything is reasonable priced and I would say a little bit cheaper than the prices here in the UK.
I think it was because I had very limited time and trying to go through as much as I could within my time frame. Definitely better than hmv but maybe not as better as smaller independent shops when you can go around at more leisurely pace and maybe have a conversation or two with the owner/staff, which is the best thing about the smaller independent local record shop.
We seem to collect the same way....my suggestion again, keep it sealed and find an open playable one. :)
U guys need to remember Aomeba records was a bigger store with 3 floors with a lot of records and cds and movies back in the Day There new location isn’t the same anymore The store got really small and don’t carry as much as they use to buy the important thing is having the place open again and keeping physical media alive 😅😅😅💿💿💿🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙

That looks nicer than the San Fran one I went to - loads of homeless from the park milling about ! They are both daunting to start with though ! I didn’t find a lot either tbh in the preowned sections / and what I did buy were not what I thought too - (reissues) / good fun though 🎉

I’m in Australia and would love Amoeba to open a store in Melbourne
But I was surprised they don’t grade their Records
Shows you how good the Japanese Record shops are with their curation and grading process
Iv never been, but you are not the first to mention how good the Japanese are with their records.
Japan is certainly going on the bucket list.

Great vid and such a lot I haven't heard of. Did not know Frost, will check them out. Baby Bertha sound interesting. I'm on a quest to pick up local bands and Fareham is very much near enough.
The Tear Gar album on Regal has been a top want of mine for years. I had no idea there was an album before that - for some reason I assumed they were a 'one and done'. Have never seen or heard of the one you showed.

OMG! CHECK OUT FROST!!! I think you will really like them.
Both baby Bertha and Tear gas are much softer rock compared to their follow up albums, but still worth checking out.
I can maybe understand the confusion with Tear gas because they quite different sounding albums but their follow up was on a different label and just titled ‘Tear Gas’.
Yes I have been completely blown away with local talent, I thought these underground obscure bands only existed in the psychedelic era in the USA 🇺🇸 but they are blowing my mind and only on my doorstep 😅
Plus opening a sealed is a rare joy in collecting! Take care

I’ve shopped at Amoeba in San Francisco and their used records weren’t sealed. Sounds like a somewhat annoying experience. I find huge record stores overwhelming, and smaller stores easier to shop in. At least you didn’t come back empty handed. I vote to open and play the Frost album for what it’s worth. Cheers.

Admittedly Amoeba doesn’t label or rate any records. Got burned in Berkeley with the first Jefferson Airplane lp that had a bad skip on one tune. Still I find them interesting. I tend to gravitate to another store in Berkeley called Rasputins. Nice you came across the pond to visit. 🖖🚀
It was very good but yeah it had a few negatives but given the opportunity I would go back 👍
Unless you are planning to resell it you may as well open that Frost record. It's not like it's a Beatles butcher cover or something like that...

Had a great time in 🇺🇸 and at amoeba, I think you are right, yes it rare to find a sealed record but it’s not necessarily a rare record but how often do you find a sealed record again from the 60s/70s?

Hey Fellow Record Collector, I live in Pasadena Ca just minutes from Los Angeles and 25mins from Amoeba Hollywood, in fact I just returned from there. It can be a blessing and a curse living so close to so many great record stores. My record collection has grown and my wallet suffers. It’s an always a treat record shopping here in Los Angeles glad you made it and nice scores.

I’m curious as to what you spent on these records.
Don’t go too much in details about money as it’s more about the music.
That being said I did find that Amoeba to be slightly cheaper (about 20%) than what they go for here in the 🇬🇧.
By my own principles I never pay a penny above what they are worth.
Hence why I never order anything from the 🇺🇸 as postage prices, VAT are really expensive
Aomeba records In Hollywood is the place we’re I buy all my cds 💿 and movies but it’s like 1 hour in bus to my house u need to bring a lot of money 💴 to Aomeba cause it’s worth it
I don’t collect cds, do they sell pre-owned cds? And is it the same process that they have to open them at the till?
@@martinsvinyl1985 what I don’t like about Aomeba though they mix all the new cds 💿 with the used cds on the racks check on the aisles if they don’t have the plastic wrap then there used but if they have the sticker with the wrap then there brand new they need to separate the used with the new that’s what I don’t like

Hey Martin. My wife asked me once why I was going to open up a sealed record from the 60’s. I told her that the most important reason I collect records is I love spinning records. If I don’t open it in my lifetime I’d just be saving it for the next guy….. that’s not happening! It’s different for everyone but personally I’d open it😀
Your right I would be depriving myself from that joy, why should I wait for someone else to be able to enjoy it when I can.
But I can’t help shake the feeling what if there’s not many sealed ones left.

Hey Martin, nice haul. Glad you finally got a Dust hard attack, one of my favorite albums. I have the Frost album also, great find. Dick Wagner had another band after Frost called Ursa Major, I believe it came out in 74 or 75. It is very good. So keep an eye out for it. Good to see you again and happy hunting!!
Yeah but I want a first pressing (it’s just the collector that I am 😅). Ursa Major is on my radar 😊
I have that second pressing of the Dust record. I like those blue labels. The original pink label copies have a gatefold cover. That's how you can tell next time you're at Amoeba and can't open it.
Some of the represses/reissues also had the gatefold cover.
I’m afraid this will most likely be my only visit to Amoeba 😢 as I don’t think I’ll visit California again

Great stuff again Martin. I dont know if it ovelapped with your visit but I know Amoeba recently did a big drop of psyce, space rock , prog, which they announced & apparently it was chaos. People were grabbing 50 albums & then deciding at the counter what they wanted. I dont know a single album you showed...which is a good thing! I reckon i've got one big trip in me, but I reckon it will be Tokyo, thanks for the video, really interesting stuff.

Yes it always pays to check the record. So many times a seller has said its an excellent copy and I run
into problems not checking.
Huge store to take in, i have heard its a very seedy area to walk around from travellers. Cool you found a few
things to take home as well as the very important AMOEBA bag!.
That Dust cover artwork was on my bedroom wall for all my teenage years. Very nostalgic for me, one day

I get why they 'wrap' the used records in that store and clearly its high turnover/quick revolving stock but it would be so much better if they included a simple info sheet at the front stating the pressing and vinyl visual grading - that is what the big stores in Japan appear to do.
I am not familiar with any of the records you picked up but interesting to hear that Mike Garson was in Brethren - its his musicianship on Aladdin Sane that helps make it my favourite Bowie album. I believe Mike was from New York so maybe there was an East Coast connection for Brethren?
and, my vote would be to open the sealed record!
Yes, from a business point of view it doesn’t make sense to keep having staff constantly opening and resealing records and putting them back on the shelves, maybe that’s why the shelves are so disorganised? A simple sheet/sticker/label is all it needs. It would save a lot of man hours, surely?

Hopefully your Frost lp is the gold label first press rather than the 1976 reissue. I bought a sealed copy of it in the late 00s (they were quite common on US eBay back then for $10 or so). The sleeve is pasted exactly like the OG so impossible to tell unless you crack it open. Lovely copy of Teargas...that does look minty. Brethren has a drum break used by the hip hop group Gang Starr so it's always been popular. Nice to see Cressida and Spring on the wall. That copy of Second Hand - Reality on the wall looked like a nice copy....the sleeve always suffers from damage. Great UK psych lp from 68 that slides under the radar somewhat. $300 was a bit too heavy on it though. Nice buys mate. Cheers Nigel

Fingers crossed for you mate but still a nice copy if it's the repress. I eventually replaced mine with a UK original for cheap. It's a superb psych record either way. Cheers Nige
