    I haven't read the book or know half of the damn musical, but from what I'm hearing:
    the book- Everyone is a dick except the Squip
    the play- Everyone is ok except the Squip
    seems reasonable

    I kind of preferred the Squip in the book. He was a metaphor for different medications for dealing with mental illness. It's a side of mental health you almost never see and I'm not as fond of the way they just made him represent low self esteem as a concept.

      I definitely preferred book squip. I didn't know he was a metaphor for mental illness though. Now the whole book makes a lot more sense. I often wish I had a squip so that it could help me with my anxiety so I probably should have made that connection.

      It was honestly one of the most intresting parts of the book for me. Trying different medications until you find the right one is a very common experiance but you almost never see it shown in media. All to often character try one type of medication and then bam they're fine. I really admired Ned Vizzini for attempting to show the process, even if it was in a very out of the box way.

    Both versions seem appropriate for what they are trying to do. The musical version of the show would have been too "dramatic" and all over the place for a book, but the book version would have been anticlimactic and underdeveloped. Either way it's a genuinely interesting story and I am loving the musical, even though some of the songs are inherently very sad or sinister the show manages to make all of them catchy and/or fun, which isn't an easy thing to pull off. Also Michael in a Bathroom makes me cry everytime.

      You captured my thoughts _exactly._ Also the fact that I see them kind of separate?
      Like yes, it's the same names and plot points we all know and love, but other than that I don't really find a definitive connection between the musical and the book; Since everyone who made the musical wasn't Ned Vizzini himself, they kind of had to do just that. Take the familiar names and plot points (not to mention the cliffhanger) then work with what they had. I just can't seem to choose one or the other because they just aren't the same. That doesn't mean I can't compare them, I just can't say 100% which one I "liked more."
      Anyway, I personally loved the book as much as I did the musical itself. The book was good for a book format and the musical was good for a musical format.

It's one of those things where one doesn't ruin the other you know? They're both very true to story and character and you kind of just love them both and how they play off of each other.

    My favorite character is actually Jeremy, followed closely by Rich. Still love Michael though.
    ~Warning: Really Fleckin' Long~
    My reasoning (this is coming from someone who has only listened to the musical, not read the book. But I've read the script.. so... that counts?):
    Jeremy just seems so much more realistic with more realistic character traits and problems than Michael. I feel that when people say things like, "Oh, he's such a jerk! What a douche canoe!" I feel like they are forgetting some major things:
    1) Jeremy was completely being bullied by Rich and Jake in the beginning, there's no argument there.
    2) Jeremy had neither a mom nor a dad to lean on and get support from. The one that he DID have did literally nothing until the very end of the musical.
    3) He was under immense pressure from the Squip and from basically everyone around him. I dunno about you, but personally I make really bad decisions under pressure, and I'm assuming Jeremy is too.
    4) Jeremy was *almost raped* by Chloe. How do people just gloss over that?! Does "Do You Wanna Hang?" just not exist?!
    5) The Squip was freaking brainwashing him. Can you honestly say you would not have done the same in Jeremy's position? It may seem greedy and stupid now, but he was given the choice to either keep being a 'loser' or get everything he's ever wanted in life. I'm not proud of it, but realistically I would have jumped at that chance.
    6) Jeremy isn't psychic. How would he know how his actions would affect those around him, including Michael?
    Plus, he just seems so sweet to Christine and seems like a genuinely nice guy.
    Don't get me wrong, I freaking love Michael, but I he just doesn't seem like he could be *real*. Peer pressure doesn't affect him ("There's never been a better time in history to be a loser!") and honestly his character doesn't extend farther than 'Jeremy's friend'. Seriously, the only problem he ever faces revolves around Jeremy (thus creating the tearjerking "Michael in the Bathroom"). You might say, "Well, duh. Jeremy is the MAIN FREAKING CHARACTER." True, however, even other side characters have problems not revolving around Jeremy. Take Christine, for instance. Christine is unsure whether to go out with Jake or not because she doesn't know if he is committed to being in a relationship- after all, he is notoriously a player. This storyline doesn't intertwine with Jeremy's life initially, but all of Michael's problems are because of Jeremy.
    Also, Michael freaking has no flaws. Again, love the guy, but I find myself particularly liking those who are realistic characters (and let's be honest: everyone has a flaw, and Michael not really having one makes him seem OP, or the musical equivalent).
    This was never meant to be some kind of Michael hate-speech, I was only just stating my opinion... which nobody asked for and was extremely long. I'll let myself out.
    (Also I like Rich 'cuz Gerard Canonico is a gift from God, okay? I really don't know why he's my second favorite, only that he is).

      Yeah, I don't know how he characters act in the book, because I have yet to read it (planning on getting it soon, though!). From what you said in the video and in the comments, I'm also kinda expecting the Squip to be my favorite book character, even though I quite like how Eric William Morris portrayed the Squip in the show!
      Also, I kinda got started writing this comment and I just couldn't stop. Glad you found it interesting though :D
      I was afraid that people might think I was hating on Michael though~

    • @KelpieRider
      @KelpieRider 7 лет назад +27

      Cookie Doge I really get what your saying, especially that bit about Chloe, like, that's gonna be traumatic as fuck but pretty much everyone glosses over it. But with micheal, and I might be biased, I do love him, one of what I see as his major flaws is his disregard for Jeremy's feelings ie 2 player game. Jeremy tries to tell michea l about how he feels being so low in their social structure and being bullied bit michea l brushes him off. As well as later when Jeremy tries to tell him what having the squip is like, and showing some major red flags, Michael flies right passed it. And Jeremy was clearly shaken in the bathroom scene, probably in shock, and Michael doesn't notice.

    • @ThatLazySnail
      @ThatLazySnail  7 лет назад +15

      The SQUIP in the book is great, but you are right Eric William Morris did a fantastic job. I didn't think you were hating on Michael either it's your opinion and you had completely valid reasons for saying everything you said. You are totally entitled to your opinion and this comment furthers conversation about the show/video which is all I can ever hope for from comments.

      ((this is for show Michael and Jeremy, not book Michael and Jeremy, mostly since I haven't gotten a copy of the book as it is, and so, haven't read it))
      I feel like Michael's disregard for what his peers say is sort of an interesting part of him? Like, you could read into it as him being nonchalant as as shield against what people say. It's surprisingly easy to pretend not to care or act upbeat, and use your friends as a shield to just push away or bottle up how you feel. Because hey, if you have someone else there, it's easier to pretend what people say doesn't matter, or just put on your headphones and drown it out. This is also kind of why Michael in the Bathroom is really sad for me at least, since it's Jeremy very openly casting Michael down and forcing him to acknowledge that he's a loser, as well as abandoning him. On the list of other flaws, we have:
      -being dependent on Jeremy to a rather unhealthy degree
      -being pretty lazy honestly
      -Kind of painfully optimistic to the point of naivety (it'll all be better in college!)
      That said though, Jeremy is still an awesome character, and I like him as much as I do Michael ^^. They're almost like two sides of how people deal with being bullied, Michael tries to brush it off and pretend it doesn't exist, all while coating it in optimism for the future, and Jeremy wanting to do something about it in the present, and being openly unhappy with his standing. And yeah, Michael could use more flaws, but he does feel like a very real character to me. Honestly, this could also very easily just be me projecting onto Michael at this point, but I can't really care anymore.

      @AliceInWonder98 6 лет назад +13

      Well when you read the squirt for Be More Chill you see in the end that Michael admits that he dose care about being cool but he knows it'll never happen i don't think he ever notice how alone he was till Jermany ditched him he realized he really dose care about those things and now dosnt have is best friend to distract him. Also you see that Michael is also bullied and called the anti social kid with the big headphones It's hinted that he's only really hyper active and adorable when he's around Jermany but everyone else he's shy and quite so I think you should give Michael more credit as realistic cause everyone has that one friend that if they lost they lose it especially in high school im not saying your wrong about Jermany he desvered more credit but your alittle off about Michael

    I listened to the a show probably a million times. And read the book once. I adore and love every part of the book, but since I listened to musical first, I don't know if I should be disappointed in the book or the musical. The book was very anticlimactic, but the Squip made everything SO much better. I think the idea of the Squip and Jeremy (and maybe Michael?) having a mutual relationship and writing the book for Christine was very clever. And the fact that Michael was oblivious to everything Jeremy was doing was hilarious. But they never played Apocalypse of the Damned together... IM STILL PISSED.

    Spoilers
    I loved the book but hated the ending.
    I wanted something dramatic with all this buildup with writing the book to give to christine but all that happens is a simple "google it"
    I'm mad.
    The stage adaption was better in terms of the ending and overall I liked the way they portrayed the squip being the villain.
    In the book though the squip tries to do it's job but fails and accepts that he is flawed technology and asks for Jeremy to get rid of him instead of blowing the school mad shit crazy.
    My favorite character in the show would have to be either the squip and in the book Rich would have to be my favorite character.

    I’m reading the book rn, and I love Be More Chill bc it kind of helps me to realize that, although I don’t believe that SQUIPS actually take over a high school somewhere out there just yet, there r some people that have a way worse time in high school than I’ll ever have. Not only is Be More Chill relatable, it’s so far fetched it helps me see the world from a different perspective. I always thought things like “oh no I failed this test the world must be ending,” but Be More Chill reminds me that some high school kids have it a lot worse. Some high schools might not even have proper desks or blackboards or anything. My school is very privileged to have things like that that give the students the best education they can manage. It helps me remember to take a deep breath and keep things in perspective

  • @emmadykstra9087

    Your points are pretty good but I think the fact that everyone in the book is less feeling and less caring is a kind of commentary on what it feels like to be left out. In my experience, when you're alone all the time you tend to base your thoughts and actions toward other people on general stereotypes and what you collect of them through general interaction. In a way you kind of lose yourself as well, moving through your interactions in a kind of clunky, awkward way, not knowing what to expect from the other people because you don't care enough to find out. I remember completely losing my personality at one point and drifting through life aimlessly. I didn't care enough to find out about other people but i desperately wanted to be left out. Michael in the book actually supports my belief because he does act like my "best friend" did towards me for the longest time. He's just there so Jeremy has someone to talk to. He's Jeremy's link to being "normal" and "cool" so that's why he keeps Michael around. In a way, I feel like the show couldn't portray what I saw in the book and what made the book special for me personally and just made it more relatable to a larger audience. Sorry for the long comment and all lol I just relate to the book so so much more than the musical but I really like both anyway.

    • @ThatLazySnail
      @ThatLazySnail  7 лет назад +4

      That definitely makes sense since Jeremy and the Squip were a metaphor for the author and his mental illness. The story is definitely about learning how to deal with people. I really like your comment it does a really good job kind of explaining the feel of the book. I definitely relate to being excluded or the inability to talk to people and you are right, the show doesn't do as good of a job at portraying that.

I like the kind of villain build up of the squip in just how its attempts to just follow its objectives which is to make Jer cooler and get him the girl he likes, just goes to the extreme but then I would have liked for the squip to come to the realization that he wasn’t really helping Jer and for him and Jer to kind of have a heart to heart talk as he is slowly deleted away.

    I haven't read all the book, but what I did read, I hated. For me, the characters are the most important part of any story, and I didn't care about/disliked all the book characters. The females were portrayed as stereotypical popular high school "bitches", and the dudes were just all assholes. Jeremy's super fucking weird, and also superficial and sex crazed. Michael's the same way. In the show, all the characters get real development, Michael's adorable, sympathetic, and probably gay,.Jeremy is likeable and I understand and forgive his actions, Christine's an actual character, Rich is an actual character (and bi!!) and also I sympathize with him, they're all just so much better.

      I didn't hate the book but I will agree that the girls are stereotyped and the boys are rather sex crazed but I didn't find that to be that inaccurate for high school boys. Plus you have to take into account that you are only viewing the story from Jeremy's perspective in the book and his kind of an idiot and is probably putting HIS feelings onto everyone else. But the characters in the show are definitely better.

      Star Orchid He is all but confirmed to be gay, but that line meant (TW: suicide) he wished he had killed himself instead of going to the party.

    • @Maddie_TMC
      @Maddie_TMC 7 лет назад +1

      I think it was confirmed somewhere he was gay, but the "offed myself" part had nothing to do with that. What Living Dreamer said is correct, he was having a panic attack because of what Jeremy said and was wishing that he was dead rather than have to go through that.

    tbh i liked the musical more than the book, mostly because in the musical, the characters were actually likeable (but book squip is still precious) and in the book christine was kind of an ass, but so was jeremy tbh

    personally, I freaking love the musical adaption of the Squip and the book adaption of him.
    His portrayal in the book made you feel more attached to him and feel more sad of how he insists that he has to be shut off, though in the Musical it feels satisfying to see the villain get taken down. But if the Musical stuck with everything from the book I wouldn’t mind.

    the play in the musical is so funny to me because imagine you have the pov of someone attending the school play. youre watching midsummer night's dream because your child is in it but in the middle of the play some twink bursts into the room screaming about mountain dew red and squips, whatever those are. and then everyone starts screaming. and youre just so confused

      Well, I mean we never see them go on a date, but we know they do because of these lyrics from Voices in My Head courtesy of themusicallyrics.com
      JEREMY (spoken):
      Yeah, but...who wants things to be hard?
      Look, I almost destroyed the school, maybe all human civilization.
      I know the last thing I deserve is another shot.
      But...
      CHRISTINE (spoken):
      Just say what’s on your mind, Jeremy.
      JEREMY (spoken):
      Lunch?
      Just the two of us.
      CHRISTINE:
      And any voices in our heads?
      JEREMY:
      There might be voices in our heads
      But I swear
      The voices there
      Will be the regular kind
      CHRISTINE:
      Me and the voices in my head have made up our collective mind
      JEREMY:
      What do they say we should do?
      CHRISTINE:
      I think that all of us want to go out with you

    The end of the musical I think mocked those movies that always end with the main character with their crush? Idk I think I read it somewhere
    But anyways, I love the musical! It's relatable to a lot of people(in my opinion) I haven't read the book, but I want to so badly!

  • @Emanymph

    I signed out the book earlier, and I was like "if this is as good as the play, I'll be happy"
    Turns out the squip isnt evil and the epic scene at the end doesnt happen.
    MY LIFE IS A LIE
    Both were great though. I wish I had a squip! (the book one, of course)

    • @ThatLazySnail
      @ThatLazySnail  6 лет назад

      Same (about the squip). The whole concept of the SQUIP is so much more fascinating once you realize that the author was using it as a metaphor for anti-depressants

    As someone who read Be More Chill (and pretty much all of Ned Vizzini's books) about a year or so before the musical came into existence, thank you for doing this! Most people don't even know that BMC started as a book, and don't know how differently it ends. I remember listening to the sound track for the first time and the last few songs REALLY tripping me up.

    I have only heard the soundtrack and i LOVE the S.Q.U.I.P. but they make him the bad guy. He is just doing his job and helping Jeremy. I personally hate the ending of the musical. They deactivate the S.Q.U.I.P. but he still haunts Jeremy in his head as the villain. I haven't read the book yet but i will definitely try to

    I watched the musical and read the book. What I find interesting, is that in the show, Christine agrees to go out with Jeremy, but in the book she rejects him and it never really confirms if they ever go out. I can't say which one is better. Also Rich becomes more of a friend to Jeremy once he gets his SQUIP. But in the show, that doesn't really happen. ALSO!!! Michel goes to jakes party and it never shows him having a mental breakdown or something like that, he is in the bathroom with an Asian girl. I LOVED the song Micheal in the Bathroom so much, so this was a little disappointing. Overall, I think the book is worth reading and the musical is also worth watching.

      Here is a link to where you can buy the book: www.amazon.com/Be-More-Chill-Ned-Vizzini-ebook/dp/B00ZD7MQHU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503374404&sr=8-1&keywords=be+more+chill
      I don't know how much money you have, but it's not super expensive? If you can't afford it they might have it at used book stores (cause it's kind of old). They might also have it at a library? It just depends on your local library and how big it is and what kind of books they stock.

    correction on the mountain dew red thing, modern day mountain dew code red is not the same as the original mountain dew red, the original mountain dew red was discontinued thus why they made it such a big deal in the story "where are you gonna get a bottle of mountain dew red" then jeremy replies that he has a friend who collects vintage sodas (Micheal)

    be more chill content is all 1 or 2 years old at this point but ive just gotten into it a few months ago and? it hnestly changed my life. it gave me characters to see and feel and watch grow as the story continues onwards, it bridged onto dear evan hansen which threw more beautiful characters nto me like the stuttering mess that is evanhansen and the sarcastic smol of jared kleinman! overall musicals changed my life in ways i cant describe. goodnight!
