Be More Chill - which recently had its world premiere in an extended run at Two River Theater, Red Bank, NJ - has music and lyrics by Joe Iconis, book by Joe Tracz, and is based on the novel by Ned Vizzini. The show was directed by Stephen Brackett with Chase Brock serving as choreographer. The orchestrator and musical supervisor was Charlie Rosen and the musical director and copyist was Nathan Dame. The Be More Chill cast album was produced by Kurt Deutsch, Joe Iconis and Charlie Rosen.
Praised as “a high-energy, imaginative, well-crafted world premiere musical” in The Star-Ledger, Be More Chill was lauded as “a vibrant, inventive musical that makes the most of every moment and features an abundantly talented cast” by BroadwayWorld.
Jeremy Heere (played by Will Connolly) is just an average teenager. That is, until he finds out about “The Squip” (Eric William Morris) - a tiny supercomputer that promises to bring him everything he desires most: a date with Christine (Stephanie Hsu), an invite to the raddest party of the year and a chance to survive life in his suburban New Jersey high school. But is being the most popular guy in school worth the risk?
The recording of Be More Chill also features original cast members Jake Boyd (Jake), Gerard Canonico (Rich), Katlyn Carlson (Chloe), Katie Ladner (Jenna Rolan), Lauren Marcus (Brooke), George Salazar (Michael), and Paul Whitty (Jeremy’s Dad/Mr. Reyes/Scary Stockboy). The six-piece orchestra includes Nathan Dame (Conductor and Keyboard), Danny Jonokuchi (Theremin/Trumpet), Dan McMillan (Drums/Percussion), Josh Plotner (Vocoder/Reeds), Mike Rosengarten (Guitar) and Amanda Ruzza (Bass).

Stupid Steven you are everywhere. But yeah you're right, I think it's bc people who listen to musicals like this are the ones who can resonate with the characters, especially the awkward ones like Michael. The panic attack during the song is just the icing on the cake, bc it lets us know that we aren't the only ones who go through stuff like that. I can guarantee you, I cried at least three out of the seven hundred times I've listened to it.

I honestly fell in love with this musical because of Will's voice. He sounds like a teenager with how bright of a tenor he is. Be More Chill was such an amazing musical especially for kids in high school because everyone can relate to it on some level. I watched it thrice because the music and energy was infectious. I'm so glad the cast recording released on iTunes

don't get me wrong I 100% love this musical, but everyone's talking like Joe wrote the storyline. I don't want to be that guy, but Ned Vizzini was an incredible author. HE was the one who caught the awkward moments and feelings that make this musical so great. This "pop punk teen story" was what Vizzini specialized in, and just thinking about him is making me start to cry. I admired him and his work so much. It's crazy to think he's gone.

And even though the musical was based on the book, he was the one who captured the “pop punk teen” feel of the book and still be able for the people watching it too get that vibe through the music and design of the characters. Main Character (Jeremy, Veronica, Evan) does something stupid to impress their love interest (Christine, JD, Zoe) and ends up regretting it and backstabbing their best friend (Micheal [He is such a cutie], Martha, Jarred) and the best friends are always and I mean *ALWAYS* the *BEST* character. Oh and don't forget that they always mess around with gay relationships (Boyf Riends, Dead Gay Son, Evan x Connor) but they *never* go through with it 😣 (except sort of in Heathers).
But yet I'm addicted to all these musicals (I'm just upset about the gay part)

The fandom is full of slightly angsty teenagers who relate to Michael... and that means the writers and composers did their work perfectly. I'm one of those teens, and Michael in the Bathroom really got me into the rest of the musical. Also the sci-fi. I love that shit.
But Michael's song is so emotionally intense in a way that's not commonly found in other musicals. It's so human, and everyone's been there, yet its often untouched on.

Hannah Johnson I think he did it on purpose. Because in the book there's a part where the teacher is taking attendance by calling last names and he says "Heere?" and Jeremy talks about how he always has to respond "present" so it doesn't get confusing.

Lisa Personally I don't think it's nearly as good as the musical, so don't feel too much like you're missing out. It's not terribly more inappropriate but it's definitely noticeable. It is interesting to see the origins of some of the musical characters, though.

It's playing in November from the 9th to 12th in Lakewood, NJ at the Exit 82 Theater. The tickets are only $20 each. I got mine last night. I don't know if I'll be able to get there with the rest of the costs since I'm all the way in Oregon, but I'm gonna try my hardest.

So sad nobody is listening to this musical or the 2019 version. I love this musical, and I feel like I'm the only one still in the fandom or the DEH fandom.
I love both casts, and this musical has had a good run.
I hope this will have some revival, or just millions of people come back to these two fandoms.

Oh my goodness... Watching everyone recording and still moving to the music and acting in character is so awesome. :D OH MY GOSH THERE'S A THEREMIN! These characters are just so exaggerated but not in an annoying way. I love the diversity of the songs and how they all blend in to tell this story. Michel in the bathroom makes me so emotional every time. It is so relatable. The actor who's playing Michel has such an amazing voice and does that song in such an amazing way.

I wish I could have seen this musical! It's up with Heathers as one of my favorite musicals. It prompted me to read the book and now Ned Vizzini is my favorite author!! I wish more people listened to it because it's really amazing!!!!
