What is the DeWALT Difference Atomic Vs XR Home Depot Sales

  • Today I will compare the Dewalt Atomic DCF809C2 kit from Home Depot to the Dewalt XR DCF887P1 impact driver. I go over 5 different exciting tests so stick around till the end. While the Dewalt XR kit comes with a 5.0Ah battery we will be using the 1.5Ah battery so that we can see the two tools perform the same.
    Honestly, if you can get the Atomic line at a sale price it might be worth your money, so If I were in the market for some new Dewalt tools and didn't need all the bells and whistles and needed decent performance I might actually buy the ATOMIC tools!!

    As an automotive mechanic, I prefer the XR. It works great as a bit driver, and when needed, I can snap in a 1/4” socket adapter and it makes a pretty powerful 1/4” impact wrench.

    May sound silly (until you try it). Please run the same tests with the 5AH battery in both tools. The real comparison in performance and price vs. performance would obviously be the 5AH XR impact driver vs 1.5AH Atomic impact driver. I noticed a significant difference in performance when I switched my older XR (single speed) over to 4AH batteries. I use mine mostly for automotive work. It now almost torques lug nuts to 100ft/lbs and broke 2 of my non-impact rated Craftsman sockets. Both were different sizes and previously not abused. And yes, now I HAVE to use impact sockets.

    I prefer the XR in most situations. I’m an electrician and when I did service work it was hands down XR all the way. Now that I’ve moved into doing generator installation I’ve come to find I can save some money on a few select tools by going Atomic. I have had a few Atomic tools fail early on, within a month of purchase. While I have yet to break an XR tool.

    I have both, I bought the atomic as a backup shop tool and keep my XR for field work. I'm disappointed in the atomic as it struggles with not enough torque but for electricians or someone who doesn't need full power it's a great option.

    The problem with all these "More Torks than the competition" impact drivers is that the fuckers snap screws when you try to use them for that purpose.
    Sure, it's cool that you can take off lug nuts with your impact driver, but I've got impact wrenches for that. I want my impact driver to drive screws, not 1/2in bolts.

      I need them to do everything including drive lags after pre drilling. They get 3/4 in and then i have to switch to a ratchet. Pricks. Speeds would actually be nice. But what would be nicer than anything is my battery's lasting more then. O.025 amp hrs. I switch to the drill if im worried about snapping screws or those particular screws are more prone to snapping more than others.

    • @haterskeephatin101
      @haterskeephatin101 Год назад +2

      @@eastonmtb2128more amps equal more power it's basic ohms law. A battery with 5ah can run 5 amps for one hour and a 1.5 ah can only run 1.5 amps per hour. If more amps didn't equal more power your breaker would have all the same amps for every fuse, and you wouldn't need a high amp fuse for the washer dryer or AC. Hope this helps.

      That's a tough call to make. Example same gear set motor switching and mofet pack, but one has a better heat sink on the mosfets. Mosfets stay cooler and the whole rig is more efficient. Tiny differences in design can save $$$ in build cost, plus most large tool manufacturers love to have a pricing hierarchy.

    Just to add, (and this towards comments in the thread, not towards the author) in no way is the Atomic "just a handyman" tool because it is a little slower than the XR. These are DeWalt tools and are sturdy and can and will handle rough job-site work all week long. There are brands that are half the price which are fine for less demanding work. Sure, a handyman can use the best too, but the Atomic is not to be relegated to handyman status,. that's Hart, Ryobi etc..

    I think the Atomic one knew it was going to get smoked by the XR, which is why it fell off the board when you did the intro. Seriously though, marketing people need to realize that not everything can be "the best". Remember when Gold cards were the best? Now it's Platinum or Rhodium or whatever took the place of platinum.
    Jokes aside, I can't help but think of the Atomic as the "Cadillac Cimarron". Initially, seems like a great idea to take a well-respected brand name and crank out a boatload of cheapies, but as Caddy found, it really just hurt the brand's image. Honestly, if they branded it as the top of the line B&D, then it would be a completely different angle and make the same company the same amount of money. I would be worried that the team designed to quite literally cheapen it, might have went too far.
    Ave mentioned in a video a while ago about how these impact drivers lose power over time, and I have to agree. Even my Rigid, which has a new battery thanks to the LSA (I'm a big fan of Rigid because of that), has less power than before. Less screws drilled per battery charge, and lag bolts that used to tighten all the way now stop before they finish. So with that thinking in mind, one could warranty it out (If Rigid allows for it -- it still works though), or keep buying cheap ones over and over again as their torque rating dips below the level you need. Conversely, if you spend more up front, get a tool that substantially exceeds your needs, then you should be able to get much longer life out of the tool before it hits the bin.
    I have to laugh every time that poor Ryorbi gets to the starting line. It must have a pencil sharpener motor in it!

    The XR is “priced a little bit higher”? Isn’t it $199 vs $129, ie 50% more?

      The Xtr is slightly bigger and has more specs on paper, but I think it definitely is one of the better impact drivers available today.

  • @dutchynehtam

    Hey man. I’m torn. Should I go with the Kobalt XTR impact driver or Ridgid Octane? Kobalt running a deal with their kit includes charger, 4.0 and case for $179 plus an additional free 4.0. Ridgid is on sale for $99 but no battery or charger and I need one. All I have is a Ridgid radio so I’m not invested too much.

    • @BudgetBuiltDiesel
      @BudgetBuiltDiesel 3 года назад

      Right now ridgid is having a pretty good deal on their subcompact stuff (online only) for 250 you get subcompact drill, impact driver, and an impact wrench. Two batteries and a charger. It’s in the special savings category.
      I’m going to go with ridgid once I get some money. Main reason is they have the tools I want and they’re decently priced.

      Don't go with ridged if you're a contractor. If you're a homeowner and is not gonna see everyday use than its more than capable but if you're using it quite often id gob with the kobalt, dewalt or milwaukee for long term durability

    Apples and oranges, you can't compare when using a 1.5ah battery up against a 5ah battery. For the price you pay here in England can't really complain about the atomic because it is only 2/3 the price of the 796 XR and thankfully they come with 2ah or 3ah batteries, I have the 709 "atomic" hammer drill came with 2x 3AH battery and the 3ah battery makes a difference and I will try it with the 5ah battery but to me what's the point when it's supposed to be a compact lightweight piece. It's done everything I have asked of it and done it so much better than the bosch PSB 1800 LI-2 which cost 110 and only came with 1x 1.5ah battery. The Dewalt dcd709 "atomic" came with TSTAK case two 3ah batteries and was only 125 pounds sterling.

    Looked like in test used different sockets. One impact one not...that matters

    • @norge696
      @norge696 3 года назад

      no it doesn't.... Chrome sockets may shatter if you use them on impacts. Literally the only difference.

    • @matthewthompson1082
      @matthewthompson1082 3 года назад +1

      No they do matter because the heavier the socket the more force that is generated to the bolt you are working on. Why do you think we use special impact sockets specifically designed for crank pulley bolts?

    Great comparison video bro
    I am a dewalt fan , not saying all others stink , just used dewalt for 20 plus years in many job applications.
    Personal experience; homeowner or maybe in home set , the non xr is wonderful , just starting out in construction world , non xr will work but , is slower , does consume battery (1.5) , to the point that the two battery pack is not enuff .
    So I recommend if your starting out , kinda first day stuff , atomic is fine but purchase a 3ah or 4ah xr battery to go with .
    Worker will be more productive , less frustrated ( battery swap) and I think better for the tool versus trying to get that last start stop or two outa tool before getting off ladder roof etc .
    Thanks g

    Is that dewalt XR the one that goes up in smoke all the time? I hear to stay away from the 887 lineup

    • @ClientGraphics
      @ClientGraphics  3 года назад +2

      Yes, but I’ve only ever seen them go up in smoke on RUclips videos. They get hot enough or spit out grease and usually show signs that the tool is under a lot of stress. Usually happens when they are run tool long. The Atomic was able to burn out a brushed Milwaukee. The 887 I have has been in use for almost 3 years. It did need a collet rebuild but has kept on working without issue.

    I don't understand the recurring commentary of "are you really going to drive more than two or three 5 inch lags" etc. ??? If I have a job that requires 5" timberlocks, I am likely driving them for the better part of a day,. dozens at minimum, so the difference is in fact quite important. The real question is how often does anyone drive 10 or less of any given fastener? Because if that's your use, it's not even work, it's playing around, in which case save some $ and get the Ryobi. I'll stick with my XR thank you and enjoy the additional speed when I'm driving dozens of fasteners all day. You've posted a good comparison, don't ruin it by marginalizing the advantages illustrated in your video with inaccurate editorializing.

    I used to find it amusing seeing people with unused power tools hanging on pegboards on some RUclips channels. I had a switch turn on, maybe off, because now i want to hang power tools on display like some sort of hobby collection fetish. Seeing that XR with dirt and scratches is giving me actual discomfort. How can you do that to such a beautiful work of art? Shame!

    So if a current Dewalt tool is 20V, but NOT the XR series, does that mean it's automatically the Atomic line? Or is the "Max" it's own line, and inbetween XR and Atomic... 😕🤷‍♂️

    • @ClientGraphics
      @ClientGraphics  3 года назад +1

      If a Dewalt tool is 20v then it’s part of the MAX lineup. The MAX lineup will include XR and Atomic and any 20v tool brushed or brushless. I think Dewalt used the 20v MAX to differentiate between the older 18v NiCd and XRP stuff.

      @@ClientGraphics , so if it's brushless but doesnt say "Atomic" in the item description, or ON the product, is there a chance it's still Atomic? If not, is it better? While still NOT being XR?
