I afforded games as a kid by only buying recently failed consoles out of the bargain bin. Consequently I had only the unpopular consoles when they were new-ish and bought the popular ones a generation late, enjoying all the games I missed years after everybody else. This however meant I got to experience different games than my classmates and they were always astonished by the weird consoles they'd never heard of when I had them over. Thanks to the good taste of the local game shop owner who recommended me games for Jaguar I wound up only buying the absolute best games it had to offer. I started with Tempest 2000 and was blown away, wondering how Jaguar could've failed with games this awesome. It was a very selective, distorted impression of that system's overall library but the Jag having less than a dozen good games wasn't a problem for a kid who couldn't afford loads of games anyway.

The snowboarding game isn't using Mode 7, but line scrolling, the technique used to draw the road in many racing games like Outrun or Hang On, hence why it can have hills & dips where the mode 7 tracks in Mario Kart and F-Zero were flat

You can't go wrong with either of these consoles. SNES was well stocked with excellent games as well as some killer apps like Actraiser, A Link to the Past, Mario World etc. The Jag had some killer apps that simply couldn't be done on SNES like Rayman, AVP, Skyhammer, Battlemorph, Tempest 2000, Defender 2000.

So the reason for the 1/3 screen HUD for the Jaguar version of RAIDEN is because in the arcade the screen is on it side allowing you to see more vertical then horizontal, adding the hud fixes the aspect ratio to make it closer to the arcade.

You missed a few such as Dragon's Lair (Jaguar CD), Flashback: The Quest For Identity, Gods (recent homebrew port), Pinball Fantasies, Syndicate, and The Chaos Engine (recent homebrew port). I only listed homebrew ports that I know have a physical release. AtariAge just added 3 more to their store, and I know of at least 4 more that have been licensed for release on the Jaguar that are still in the works that will be sold thru the AtariAge store. The Jaguar now has more aftermarket releases by far than it had commercial releases back in the day (from AtariAge, Songbird Productions, GDG, and others). And I like the Jaguar controller.

@ 15:07 Yay, Doom! Okay, SNES Doom is impressive as a technical achievement, but that aside, it's pretty rough. Resolution and frame rate are poor, among other problems. But, it does have good-quality music during play, and its level layouts are *far* more complete than the heavily-edited Jaguar levels. Also it should be mentioned that the stuttering-snowstorm effect seen in the SNES Doom footage here is due to emulation, and is not seen in the actual game.

I believe the huge status bar in Jag Raiden was to preserve the aspect ratio of the arcade game, which iirc was longer vertically than horizontally. If the bar wasn't there there would probably be no horizontal scrolling at all on the Jag version, and also you would have a load of enemies that would not have been seen that would now be seen and would shoot at you, making the game far more difficult. It's not in any way due to the Jag's capabilities, as I think this is mostly running off the 68k rather than the custom chips. Bit cheap (probably due to timescales and budget) to use the status bar rather than rebalancing the game, but more authentic in a way.

Lol but the problem with all these comparisons is that we didn't expect better versions of 16bit ports by the time they came out on the Atari Jaguar people had been playing them for years.
The graphics are prettier than the SNES expected but are they are they as good as the Playstation? Which is what Atari had to compete with because it was considered next gen so people upgrading skipped Atari and just went straight to PS1/N64 and some special people like me the Sega Saturn 😋

It’s common knowledge that despite the complexity of the Atari console, most games turned out to be better on Jaguar than on the SNES due to more powerful hardware (obviously). Some games like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Raiden, NBA Jam T.E. and Troy Aikman NFL Football looked and performed better on Jaguar, while other games fall short like Double Dragon V and The Bruce Lee Story. Both of these games look way better on Jaguar (particularly Bruce Lee) but have less content for some weird reason.

This is so strange...why did the Snes games typically have better color?! The Atari Jaguar had the same color capabilities as the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation with 16.7 million colors available....very strange.
The Snes version of NBA Jams was...okay. It was the weakest entry in the 16-bit console category. The lack of music during gameplay and the announcer sounding like he's in a bathroom didn't help matters at all. NBA Jams on the Jaguar however was the best version of that game in the 1990's. Mot only does it cream the Snes version but it beats the Saturn and PlayStation as well. It features the closest to the arcade that we ever got...still too this day. The characters scale, announcer is crystal clear, effects pop all over the screen...this is why I got a Jaguar in 1994 (well for Doom at first but you get it).
Addendum- Why would it be difficult to imagine the Jaguar having a better version of a game? It wasn't just a little better than the Snes...there is no competition between the two hardware wise. The 16-bit Motorola microprocessor it used as a helper chip by itself would run circles around the Snes...think twice as strong as the Genesis main processor.

too bad they were so lazy doing the the jaguar version of pitfall. however the rest showed the power of jaguar. i loved playing raiden on the jaguar, that menu on the side was made to keep the original size of the game intact because in the arcade the screen was laying on the side making it a 3:4 instead of 4:3 proportion. It was a good move IMHO. also the snes version was some what too easy against the bosses but when you die I think you come back in a checkpoint instead of a re-spawn, that was annoying. in FPS games the jag was unbeatable in its time, and the controller was the best for it, even more in some cases with the 6 button controller. . great video BTW

I had Pitfall on the Jaguar. I actually really liked the game. But when my friend got it for his Sega Genesis (I never saw the SNES version), I did get really butt hurt because the Jaguar and Genesis version looked completely identical. I take it that Pitfall is one of the games that ignored the Tom and Jerry chips and just used the 68000 processor. Unpopular opinion on Raiden... I think it's overrated on any system. At the time it was launched, it had major competition from the 16-bit systems which had mature libraries of hundreds of titles, and new ones being released every week.
1993 was Mortal Kombat II and Street Fighter II Turbo / Hyperfighting on the SNES & Mega Drive.
3DO was out, and had next gen versions of the EA sports games.
Sonic 3 was released, and the Arcades had Daytona USA about to launch.
Jaguar had some serious competition, and really needed to make a splash with both next gen games, and a well rounded software library that both appealed and impressed.
It was never going to be easy, but they did not do very well, considering this is ATARI. They had a decade worth of know franchises to update and get the best versions on their new console, but they didn't really seem to understand what they were doing.
For it to launch with a controller with A,B,C and start with no shoulder buttons or additional controls for Arcade fighters was completely short sighted.
