This is great - I've been looking for more insulation ideas for doing this sort of thing in our Canadian climate. A lot of these "build your own" alternative home videos are in places where they don't have to deal with snow and -40 windchill ;-)
Well thanks for putting it on you tube. I am planning something similar myself, will put some videos up on my channel when I start next year. One major benefit is the freedom this life can bring. Beautiful natural home you built, little or NO mortgage. free energy from the sun, growing your own food, the fresh air............. ah It's going to be quite the journey getting there but thanks to those that have gone before me. Very inspiring.
Amen! My husband and I are planning on buying some land and building an off-the-grid, self sufficient community, hopefully in the next couple years. I'm so glad to see so many people taking the leap to get off the grid. Damn the man! It's time for a REAL change.
@bukkworm a real satellite will cost a lot, but yeah you can have the interwebs in very very remote locations. I worked for cox and one of their take overs was only partially in the state, because the rest was in the mountains and those people had satellites for everything. We didn't bother even trying to market to them because we couldn't go up there.
you can also use sedum on the roof, low growing succulents that don't need any maintenance once planted and are lovely when in flower. Make for great insulation as well and are ideal in dry areas as well as wet ones like Scotland/Ireland.
Living off the grid is the way to be self-sufficient. This is a good example to follow. We in Canada are working on an alternative green housing that can be designed to be operate off the grid in the near future. If you want to see it, feel free to view our channel.
Fantastic video. They succeeded while the Ontario government is still doing their "I don't know". Is there anyway they will come to Green Shows, or Environment Fairs? Do they have a blog or have they made their bed and breakfast?
It depends on where you are I heard most of Missouri does not have building permits. Some counties are allowing them some are not. A friend of mine out side San Antonio, TX has a container home and aquaponics and waste treatment facility of their own. It just depends on where you are and who you have to deal with.
my biggest problem that Im trying to find a solution to is the battery problem (for turbine or solar). they have to be replaced every few years, and then they're useless, its more waste. is there any solution?
There are heritage laws in some places (dictating the colour of paint etc), there are permits that if you don't get you can be taken to court (for extensions, any kind of renovation), and the council dictates what kind of house you are allowed to build... everything has to be registered, on paper, and signed, by you and the council... or they have the right to tear your house down.
The issue of the battery problem. Currently there is not much to offer. Thye just die from the recharging. Keep them cool, keep them balanced and well watered. Use distiled water. It will prolong the life of them. I also recomend keeping well clean. Keep checking your wiring for ground faults and stuff like that.
Trust me, anyone living off the grid who has extra power DOES sell their extra power to the local power company. Most just make enough power for themselves because it's very expensive to get set up with enough batteries, solar panels and/or windmills.
I live in Canada, I herd of a place Lasquti bout an hour away from Vancouver BC thats off the grid, if I had the money to move somewhere warmer to grow food year round.
You are correct, sir. But that statement only applies, if you have a big house and a ton of electronics. I don't know if you're familiar with "tiny houses on wheels", they don't need much, but they are super small and almost no electronics. I think going small is better for this type of living.
Most videos of tiny houses I have seen have a microwave oven, I don't understand it and usually shown as a special feature. On the other hand, I love the way people turn them into wonderful living spaces.
those tiny homes on wheels are cool but if you have a family it doesn't work, not big enugh but they are really cool I love them just wish I could put my family in one, sorry if I jacked your comment
Ahhh a great place to live...unless you are native. I am Ojib, from the city, went to their Pow Wow one summer & was shocked at the bigotry in Wiarton....many non-natives stared at me in town & when I asked the owner of 3 Friends restaurant if there were issues between the natives/non...she said there was a long history...that made no sense to me...she said she oculd tell I was native but "different" ??? She could tell I was not from there?? So sad I will be honoured to view your other vids thks
for the price of that high level breaze you can spend little 15 on a 1,2k device that spins at a very very slow 3.4m/s with built in ac inverter..wind spire
these people might have not the neatest interior to show - but the house looks roomy enough - 2 full floors plus the loft - look out - where a nice place to sit and read books - or bird watch --- I am sure the bottom floor has a cold room - place to skin deer and moose - etc... nice place to just get away and live nice - bothering no one else
The cameraman seems a bit pushy...but I guess he cuts straight to the point (despite sounding rude at times). Have they thought about using compost as a means of heating?
Uh, burning wood (not to mention the back-up gasoline generator) may be "off-the-grid" but is not in any way "carbon-neutral." It's like, "I'm off the grid. I run all my own power on a coal stove."
well it couldn't go too far out of control, there's only so much root space.on the roof, as compared to the ground where roots can go as far as they can push down
That's so messed up. But it's unfortunately true. Talk to the folks in Arizona about this. They have huge battles with their inhabitants over stupid stuff like this all the time. Makes you wonder why something hasn't been done about this. Why can't the Govt just leave us alone?
How much does it cost to set up a house like that? Almost seems like it's a rich person's green conscious solution... Sort of like "we certainly have the cash $ to be on the grid". Off the grid, very high tech, burning trees, big bed and breakfast house. How very babyboomer "green" of them!
I dont see what being Canadian has to do with it. Why do you feel so entitled to see inside her house. This video was taken and THEN she was told it was going on youtube. That is a bad and rude a guest as you can be. Even worse you leave it open for mean comments. She was showing the off the grid parts, I think you do a these ppl a disservice leaving the comments section open to jealous, nosy and nasty commenters.
I think the reason the inside of the house is not shown is because the outside of the property was of such poor video quality that there was probably no detail visible from the interior shots. Off gridders are special people and living outside the box pisses some people off.
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad, he who amongst the community of Jews or Christians hears about me, but does not affirm his belief in that with which I have been sent and dies in this state (of disbelief), he shall be but one of the denizens of Hell-Fire
@bukkworm .....I'd be more worried about a user-name that connotes intelligence whereas your misspellings & vulgar vernacular (As in gross use thereof rather than a degenerated obscene sense) leads one to believe that you would not suffer too much without an internet connection........GaaaaacccccckkkkkkkK!

Wow, wish we could have seen the fireplace, sounds fascinating. Congratulations on your wonderful accomplishments!
Love your design concepts!

"The windmill isn't turning?"
...."its not windy".....lol too funny:) beautiful home though thanks for posting:)

Mullen Stalks at 3:44 my favorite hand drill. and smoking the leaves is a natural remedy to alleviate the respiratory .
Fantastic! Is that tall structure at the end of the vid a Ham Radio tower?

One nice homestead. Great job.

Wow, that is what I want!!!! Living off the grid!!
Thats awesome I would love to live like that
looks great on the outside, would love to see inside too.

How do you get a lawnmower on the roof ?
can I contact this person to know more about their experiences?

Is my grandpa doing this interview?
great home looks like a good life
very cool, is this in bc?
cool house, you people R tuned in 4 sure
What region of Canada is this in? What is the vintage of the home?
These are friends of mine. They are on in Bruce County, Ontario. Built about 2004.
I was disappointed a I really wanted to see the inside of the house.
Mary Flentge Me too.
@ProductionRadical Judging from others I've seen and the amount of labour I assume they put into it themselves, I'd say $150,000 - $250,000.
where is this? on a gulf island?
Trust me, anyone living off the grid who has extra power DOES sell their extra power to the local power company. Most just make enough power for themselves because it's very expensive to get set up with enough batteries, solar panels and/or windmills.
what do you pay in taxes every year for the land and house
I live in Canada, I herd of a place Lasquti bout an hour away from Vancouver BC thats off the grid, if I had the money to move somewhere warmer to grow food year round.
Is this house in Ontario?

good luck to you... love this!
Really nice, and doesn't look that hard to build!
those tiny homes on wheels are cool but if you have a family it doesn't work, not big enugh but they are really cool I love them just wish I could put my family in one, sorry if I jacked your comment

it looks like a "Green" Yurt. I've always thought living off the grid will be fun, and cheap.
AND THE TRUTH SHALL SET US FREE
for the price of that high level breaze you can spend little 15 on a 1,2k device that spins at a very very slow 3.4m/s with built in ac inverter..wind spire

hey i luv this about to get a motor home put solar above it
and do my thing this everyday life is boring
The cameraman seems a bit pushy...but I guess he cuts straight to the point (despite sounding rude at times). Have they thought about using compost as a means of heating?
This is all good and dandy on small scale, but what about on a large scale.
Uh, burning wood (not to mention the back-up gasoline generator) may be "off-the-grid" but is not in any way "carbon-neutral." It's like, "I'm off the grid. I run all my own power on a coal stove."
@Hellhound30x You sir have batears.
What? Is it a bed and breakfast? What do you mean, strange one?
Wish I could hear her talking. The audio on this video is very poor.
@ConnorPwns21
Ireland is mostly like that too :D
Hard to hear the lady speaking.....she speaks so softly. Interesting.....would have liked to have seen the inside of the house......
well it couldn't go too far out of control, there's only so much root space.on the roof, as compared to the ground where roots can go as far as they can push down
yes, fill your batteries up with water, that'll work...
That's so messed up. But it's unfortunately true. Talk to the folks in Arizona about this. They have huge battles with their inhabitants over stupid stuff like this all the time. Makes you wonder why something hasn't been done about this. Why can't the Govt just leave us alone?
why is canida so aead and america so behind??? WE FUCKING NEED THAT GREEN TECH STUFF!!!!
How much does it cost to set up a house like that? Almost seems like it's a rich person's green conscious solution... Sort of like "we certainly have the cash $ to be on the grid". Off the grid, very high tech, burning trees, big bed and breakfast house. How very babyboomer "green" of them!
NICE!!!
@jrbowen81 get better speakers... I can hear the woman just fine.
hear the judgment in his voice when he realizes their generator runs on gasoline
Nice.
why wouldn't it be allowed? You're allowed to build your house however you like on your own property.
I would leave my menial high-stress job and go set up a yurt in the middle of fucking nowhere, but I am enslaved by debt.
I think I would get lonely.

why do they think that living off the grid means they cant mow the lawn?????
I would never use this house for a example .
I can't live without electricity.
This started off like a porn (excuse the crassness)...but what an amazing structure.
It never says they are totally off the grid.. Relax
Why is she whispering.. does she have a self esteem problem?
Very poor quality video and sound, not to mention the fact that we never saw the inside!!
I would never use this house for a example . Anyone can do nothing .

Enjoyed this video to learn something new, but I would of liked to be hearing the lady without the straining to hear what she had to say.
