Why iPhones Don't Have Custom Ringtones

- If you’ve switched from Android to iPhone, you may’ve tried setting a custom ringtone. Only to find out that it’s not possible, unless you’re prepared to follow a convoluted workaround that often requires a computer, iTunes, and an audio editing app. For comparison, setting a custom ringtone on Android is as simple as navigating to settings and selecting an MP3 file. So why doesn’t Apple simplify the process on iPhone? Well, the short answer is greed.

"Well the simple answer is greed"
Oh my god. He said the quiet part out loud.
Maybe, but he’s not Apple, so he can say the quiet part out loud… If Apple said it… Well, that would be weird.
Well if the beginning said it better then the accident from that last paper base wasn’t even gonna work so…
It is not greed. It is safety. Tell me one andriod phone that is more safe if you store crucial data? Chinese android? I dont care if my phone rings Timberlake ringtone... i care if my project won't leak

I made my own personal ringtones using GarageBand. I didn’t just use the voice recorder and clip a song. I made my own. I’ve done it for heaps of people free of charge. The only thing is. I use their phone to do it. It gives it a unique feel as it is theirs and I can’t access it after. Makes me feel good.
I use ringtone maker and garage band
Not all heroes wear capes
I just import any song into garageband and convert it into its ringtone file. I have nokia tune as my ringtone.
That's cool, good job!
SAME I USE THE EXACT SAME THING!
I bought my first iPhone back in 2012. It was the iPhone 4S. The day I unboxed it, I set the phone to the "vibrate" mode and 10 years and 3 phones later, I still haven't heard my own ringtone since.
as someone from the industry, I am pretty sure that profits off ringtones are negligible. Not allowing or making it as hard as it is to set other than the few standard ringtones is just about brand recognition. Apple has always been very proud of its sound branding and sounds like the mac startup chime, the locking sound of an iPhone, MagSafe and obviously, the ringtones are so important for brand awareness that it would hurt a lot if you wouldn't hear them everywhere ;)
The reality is just that Apple is a shitbag company that thinks they deserve the right to tell you what you can and can't do with the thing you PURCHASED from them.
That basically means they are not creating devices for the Users?
@@manishgoyal7677 well if you would come to that conclusion based on ringtones alone .. maybe yes :D - imho that would be way to far fetched and it isnt like theyre giving no options either.
Yes I think this makes more sense. Most people even us from the third world know how an iPhone rings
The ability to set your own sound makes it much easier to know when your phone is ringing instead of somebody elses. But then, they have such a low market share, it wouldn't matter anyway.
The process of getting a custom ringtone on an iPhone is basically getting a sound you want, converting it to MP3, saving it to files, opening it in garageband, and then adding it as a ringtone. It takes some work but Android doing this natively is better.
All you have to do is copy the ring ringtone you want to the ringtone folder, or the notification folder if you are copying a notification sound.
doing all this workaround makes us feel powerful that we achieved something lol
I recently tried to move an mp3 file to garageband and open it there, even converting it to Aac it doesnt worked. I see the file, but you cant click and open it for whatever reason
you can use any song from apple music xD
I only once added my custom ringtone cut from a music clip the way you said, but wasn’t there an option to just also sync it via Finder (then iTunes)?

Same, I was ready to comment about how BS this video is but he's actually being honest this time.
Yeah I was ready for him to give some alternative explanation that more or less came down to user experience.
I have a ringtone called “Old UK Phone”. It’s a recording of the old-fashioned “ring ring” which we had in the UK. I’ve always had it on my iPhone, and because it’s part of my iCloud profile, it automatically transfers across phone upgrades.
Back in the early iPhone days you could easily convert and chop up songs (even after ripping the audio from RUclips) in iTunes and set them as alarms and ringtones - for free. The alarms and ringtones I made back then still work fine today 😎
My iPhone is on silent mode 99.9% of the time.

I turned it into a ringtone for my Blackberry many years ago. It was easy. I download the RUclips video as an mp3 and used an editor.
My first iPhone was a 6. I imported my Pheobe Snow ringtone from my Blackberry and it has been my ringtone ever since. I had an iPhone X and now I have the 12. I still have my custom ringtone.

Glad to finally hear you acknowledge Apples Greed.
I recently switched to IPhone after being an android guy since the Evo 4G (2010)
And some things apple does just baffle me, until I think about them wanting more profits
Lol... I thought I was the only one who noticed this.
We all can acknowledge that apple products are great (...and this is coming from an Android/Windows guy who also owns a Macbook and can afford an iPhone, BTW). It just surprises me why sometimes Apple will just deliberately take the longer route when there's a clear simple way that benefits the user and yet claim their products are "user friendly". They're just so good at making you pay the apple tax
It's really one heckuva rarity, seeing an Apple enthusiast actually straight up have that as one of Apple's biggest flaws as a company. All things considered, it's been a long time coming.
Devils advocate here. It’s a business model not a charity.
My last Android was a HTC Evo shift 4G
You can't maintain a business without making a profit.
I'm surprised the answer you finally gave was greed. Every time I read the titles, that's what I think until you prove me wrong.
I've been constantly using iPhone starting from 2011 I guess, but never knew about "Tone store" thanks! 🙏
I actually learned something from this. I had no idea that Apple sold ringtones as my dad always either made his own or got them off of a sound file website. Thanks, Greg! I appreciate the information.
Edit: My family owns very few Apple products so my dad did this on phones outside of the Apple ecosystem.
Just use 3u tools
I actually have about 40 custom ringtones right now. I just use the GarageBand iOS app, & wav audio files. I edit 30 seconds in the GarageBand to my liking, then save and export as a ringtone. All without touching my computer, and without paying a single penny.
This has also been one of the ways for a while now; it’s not a new method.

Garageband is pretty easy to use to set any sound as ringtone. Another way is to edit in a sound editor, save as m4a file and then rename it to m4r and drag over to iPhone in Finder. That's easy enough as well.
Much easier to just click on the song

I have rarely used built in ringtones on my android. I always prefer ones from my favorite songs, or whatever catches my attention. For now its the opening part of take on me. Once i had the star wars opening theme. one direction's rock me first few seconds are great for ringtone as well.
What saddens me the most is the ringtones I bought are no longer available on my iTunes account to download, probably because the publisher pulled them from the store. I miss them, they were cool and no replacements were ever added
Make your own in iTunes. There’s RUclips vids or explanations online. Better than buying separate. You can choose your own part of the song.

Going back as far as five-years ago, I used to create my own .m4r ringtones using existing MP4's on my Mac on iTunes. But, when iTunes became Apple Music, this became convoluted and now I just settle for the default ringtone on my iPhone. But years before iPhone, custom ringtones were popular and everywhere.
It’s actually super simple to create custom ringtones using Garageband. No PC needed

Finally you acknowledge in this video that it's about their greed, which could've been the short answer in other previous videos of yours too. Not saying that this was always the reason, sometimes the topics you brought up about Apple had nothing to do with their greed for profit, but lots of times I felt like you just avoided calling them out and came with some funny technical excuses about why some basic features are missing in their products😀.
I hope you will stay on this path and call their greed out whenever the case from now on.

Nice video! I also think marketing is a significant point. making it difficult to get free ringtones lets many people use their bundle. I think we've all heard iPhone sounds in movies etc
On androids (read samsung), it's not just ringtones, we can have different call background video for every contact & the best part is that we can choose these videos from local storage.
Apart from the GarageBand option that ppl have mentioned (which I have used), I have also used Apple Music’s songs, the downside is that the ringtone starts at the song’s beginning.
I just edit the audio to start when I want it to

But I have also been on mute for years😂
Last time I wanted to create a custom ringtone was on my iPhone 3GS, I downloaded a free app which created and stored my custom ringtones for free and they still follow my phones ever since.
I'm pretty sure you could save a file as m4a or something, rename it to m4r , add to phone, and you could set these individually for each contact?
Good video, thanks. I feel like “The short answer is greed” could answer a lot of questions from all the big tech players, not just Apple.
so why andorid does have custom ringtone but apple doesn't?
@@bornapc Because Google makes more than enough money advertising using your data, so there is no need to restrict anything usually.
On top of that, Android is an open platform, as you can see that Android from one brand to the other can, and is drastically different. It doesn't make sense for one to artifically restrict the features since it'll be easy to work around it, and it could possibly reduce sales.
I used to make custom ringtones like he explained, through my computer and then adding it through iTunes or something. One day Imogen Heap promoted her ring tone “Someone’s calling” and I loved it so much, I think she provided a coupon code so it was even free (or maybe I paid for it I can’t remember) but that’s been my ringtone ever since and I love it.
Are they ditching touchbar on new macbooks soon? can you make video on this?
This is why I love this channel. While you still have a love and passion for Apple, you call out their flaws as well, so you get the good, the bad, and the ugly. So many other Apple related channels act like Apple is this perfect company that can do no wrong (iJustine comes to mind), while non Apple channels find any chance they can to take a pot shot at Apple and their users. You sit firmly in an objective middle, which allows for more reliable and unbiased information.
As someone who was wanting to make his call ringtone that phone call sound from The Orville, especially after having been watching that last season since then, this really hits close to home after having a hard time trying to do something that I THOUGHT was simple enough to do. Really has me considering Android at this point because of such things.
I’ve always done it in the GarageBand app. Pretty much any sound file can be turned into an iPhone ringtone there.
i still remember when you had to type in a ringtone note by note on the very old nokia phones. good old days ❤️
I use an audio editor app on my computer to make my custom ringtone and adjust the volume if needed. I then use Garage Band to convert the edited file to make my iPhone ringtone. I’ve been using this method to help my family and me get our ringtones that we want. This way, we can save some extra money to purchase something else. I think if more people use this method to create free custom ringtones then they will also save some money for something else too. I also use the same method to make custom ringtones for my iPad and it work very well.
never thought I needed it but when someone says you can't have it, it makes you want it despite everything.

@@Samuel-7418 ah, pixel. I experimented with it for 2 years. I have a lot of Google services so I thought to try it out. It sounded appealing to me - the first phone from Google, 0 bloatware, reliance on ai and software processing power instead of hardware. And MKBHD was selling it like it was some kind of miracle phone. So I got a Pixel 2. It wasn't a magic phone by all means. Had some minor bugs but I had warranty. Camera was the selling point of it but honestly I wouldn't notice a difference unless there's like a 4 year gap between the phones. All of the phones these days have good cameras. My issue was the depreciation. After 2 years I bought Pixel 2 for 1000 and sold it for 200 while the same priced iPhone would go down max to 800 in 2 years. The day is closing upon us with the next apple event and announcement of iPhone 14. I was actually thinking of upgrading this/next year. I'm an apple fan but not religious and occasionally switch alliances. So I was browsing some Androids as well. However some comments from Louis Rossmann made me reconsider. He was discussing the state of surveillance by the tech giants and his desire to move away from Google monopolies (maps, mail, browser, etc.). I'm conflicted. I hate the idea of my info being sold, but I think I'm too dependant on the convenience of it all. What do you think?
@@nemozetbit I am actually thinking of switching. I love the camera, but the phone is missing things. You can't adjust the flash brightness, record on the telephoto lens in FHD @ 60fps, telephoto can't be used for portraits, panoramas only on the main lens, and a whole lot of other things. I knew Google collected lots of data, but now Google is collecting other data that they don't even need.

You can add your own ringtone. With iTunes you can select any of your mp3.
I think the other reason is the copyright. Apple can sell the song to you. The T&C states that the purchased song are only for private usage. So if you play the music on a house party then technically you break Apple's T&C.
You can make them with the voice recorder in garageband

What about individual text tones for contacts in Android? I've never seen it possible to have a group text thread where it rings through with the individual's text tone instead of a group message tone (same tone for everyone in the group).

One thing that is worth mentioning though is that yes apple changed the ringtone model in the 2000s, but with the older ringtone model it was optional because you could just add the song to your SD card from Limewire or record it with the recorder on your phone to set the ringtone.

I was lucky to have taught myself how to edit and manipulate audio files long before smartphones. I learned how for the precursor of ringtones, namely Windows event sounds introduced with Windows 3.1 in 1992! This was also before MP3s, just WAV files.
Sampling and editing sound files became a piece of cake, especially after getting some shareware called CoolEdit 2000 (it was eventually bought by Adobe and became Audition). I didn't sample music for Windows events, mostly just movie quotes.
I started sampling songs for ringtones even before I got a smartphone, feature-phones could play MP3s. When I got my first iPhone and asked the store tech how to make my own tones, I was shocked when he said you couldn't, you had to buy them! I wanted to give the guy the phone back right then, because I had a big collection of custom ringtones by then.
I figured I would just have to do it manually, like I already had been doing. Apple initially threw me a curveball with their seemingly proprietary .m4r format, but it's not really proprietary or encrypted..

I never had a custom or default ringtone on my Galaxy S3 when I first had one back in the spring of 2015. It gave up on me back in spring of the following year by the screen turning off and on. Along with the power button not working and the battery not holding much charge. My Galaxy S3 never had cellular service and I would always keep it at silence.
After it gave up on me, I would use the Galaxy Tab 4 (7 in. screen, white color). It was an upgrade and downgrade at the same time. Then in early October of 2017, I brought a Galaxy Express 3 which I still agree with my above statement of upgrading.
I would then upgrade to an iPhone 6s in mid May of 2018 which made a big difference. I remember that it took a me a bit to get used to the Apple Ecosystem. By mid May of 2020, I have upgraded to the iPhone 8 Plus which doesn't feel its age too much but I notice it that more storage wise just like I did with the 6s.
In early January of this year, I upgraded to the Galaxy S10 which still performs great! It honestly took me back when I would still use my S3.
Going back to the main topic, I have never had these phones with a ringtone. I find it unnecessary unless it is absolutely needed. I would use the flash notifications on both the iPhone 6s and 8 Plus. I do miss the notification LED light on the Galaxy S3 and HTC Rezound had. ( I used that phone previously before the S3 until it wouldn't charge no more.) ( My first ever smartphone was the Samsung Vitality or Admire in the red color back in mid January of 2013. Then I had the HTC Rezound in November of 2013.)
My Galaxy S10 is the phone that has cellular service and I am happy with it.
You still can set a custom ringtone but the method takes so much effort that most people don’t bother, and even if you do it’s still limited to 30 seconds which is terrible imo. I want to assign specific ringtones to specific contacts. Different rings for different people. Is this possible?
Ringtones go even further back than that. I remember when we had so send an sms with a code to recieve a ringtone. Monophone beeping obviously.
But Nokia had a custom ringtone maker even back then. And even my dumb phone back on 2010 or so had bluetooth and 6 MB memory, so I could move files over for ringtones and wallpapers.
On my most recent phone the system simply looks for a specific folder for ringtones (and notification sounds and wallpapers respecively) and I can just put files there. Much easier than navigating through the storage.
As a lifelong Android user, I've thought about buying an iPhone to switch things up a bit, but videos like this keep me grounded and remind me of why I should avoid Apple and their insatiable greed.

@@TinyBearTim but they didn't mention the free way at all, as if it doesn't exist. That says a lot and if you can't see past your fanboyism to acknowledge that, then Idk what to tell you.

Title: Why iPhones Don't Have Custom Ringtones
Answer: "Well the short answer is greed"
cool.......
i remember using an app to convert your own mp3s to ringtones. i used the battlefield 3 solomons theme most of the time haha. but nowadays who needs ringtones anyway
It is very simple. No need Garageband or anything. I have tons of custom ringtones and notification sounds on my iPhone. Just simply convert it to M4A then rename it to M4R and copy it (sync) to your phone. Just keep the length max 40 sec.
This and the WALLPAPER, THEME affairs are what discourage me from using an iPhone. Even though Android smartphones don't have good standby/idle battery time, of which iPhone is king, I still choose Android because everything is easy and simple with it (any Android device can act as an USB. Transferring file is super convenient, be it ringtones, images, whatever).
Seriously, I should have the rights to customize MY device the way I see fit.
Apple would make so much money if they allowed people to create and sell/share themes. Imagine a Mario themed iPhone theme that includes custom icons, notification sounds, wallpapers, etc. Or whatever minimalist RUclipsr creates a dope minimalist aesthetic theme package. Android has had cool stuff similar to that but they’re all resource intensive and kill the battery.
You can make a custom Ringtone(ruclips.net/video/NPza3LU_Gfg/видео.html), Theme and Wallpaper on IPhone.
You can customize your device with cases. You don’t own the copy of the operating system so it’s not yours or have any rights on it
@@DimitrisSartzetakis Lol "customize with cases". Are you being funny?
No, the OS is not mine, but it was sold with the device that has become mine. So, at the very least, I should have the basic rights to modify it the way I deem fit. Android is open, and so it is more user-friendly than iOS. When you have an iPhone, it's like Apple tells you: "This is your device, but you have to use it OUR WAY!". No thanks!
@@khaiphamba5991 what do you mean?
But iPhones do have custom ringtones.
@nikatoenail13xx I did mine via garage band
@@jaketheoctoling same, about 40 custom ringtones have become a result of that for me lol
I Honestly don’t mind the stock ringtones, I think the last time I genuinely cared about custom ringtones was in like 2010.
Because Apple users are robots without character that is the real answer
This. Half of them realize the greed from apple, but just justifies it. Pathetic
Wait, they do not have it?
XDDDD
Holy cow I totally forgot about this, lol. I had been making my own custom ring tones waaaay back then for free.
I know it's not precisely user friendly, but you can use your iPhone and create a ringtone in Garageband, using an MP3 file or creating a full song with its tools.

Hi first
@DreSaidSo haha funny 2017 meme
On Android, users can download any song directly from RUclips ReVanced and then set that song as a ringtone.
I use iMazing on my pc. Works totally perfect. I can add ringtones, movies, whatever i like even over Wifi. Auto formatting files and put them into the correct folder.
For years I've had custom ringtones for every contact on my list. I had no idea that you couldn't do that on an iPhone.
So this guy gives unbiased answers. I'm impressed
Sorry if this might sound rude but I think you prepared badly. You can use GarageBand in order to create your own ringtone for free and you just need a mp3 file too. It isn’t as easy as the way Samsung or android in total does because you can’t just click an mp3 file but it is not that much of work to do in GarageBand to convert a mp3 to a Ringtone.
You don’t need an audio editing app. iTunes itself can natively convert a clip from any song into an m4a AAC format, which you can then rename to m4r and drag back in to iTunes to get a custom ringtone.
Slightly inconvenient? Yes. Convoluted and hard? Not really.
you can easily do this by extracting the audio of a video and using an app
I have 100s of custom ringtones. Super easy to make, there's a program called Wondershare TunesGo, place any sound file and click export. Boom custom ringtone on phone. I have each of my contacts with a distinct tone so I can just hear it and know who is calling so I can be lazy and not have to look at screen lol. Same thing with custom text tones too. That way I can decide to take phone out of pocket or not. :D
