- In this video I show one method of cleaning silver things to include coins. This is the method I use to clean some of my silver coins and made this video to show the people who ask me about that in my other coin find videos. Remember, most coin experts are now saying to never "clean" any coins. However, they will "restore" them for you for about $50 per coin (unless they are valuable coins and then the price rises dramatically). It's your money, choose wisely.

I've cleaned lots of silver in the past and wish I had known this. Thanks for the continuing education of your fans.
I just used this method for a 1945 mercury dime and a 1967 Kennedy half dollar. it worked great. this is the easiest and best method I've tried so far and will be using it for my entire silver coin collection
I've done this recently. The idea to sprinkle soda on the coin is a good one, will try that next. This method works great on the patina, but not on "milk spots" or some other stains. Tooth paste will come in handy there. Just mild rubbing.
Oh, and I use WAY more soda. Cleaning soda actually. And poor boiling water in a bowl. Lazy me, but it works. Some modern .999 silver coins had reddish patina on one side, perhaps from UV. Got that off also.
The really old circulated brown silver coins just wanted their tooth paste.
If you add a little salt in with the baking soda ( 1 to 1 mixture) it works instantaneously and you don't need to boil the water.
thank you
Beau when I was younger you've just reminded me that we were taught that chemistry trick in college to clean the silver cutlery and I'd forgotten about that all these years later.
I can vaguely remember being in the classroom quite mesmerized
Also Beau any vids you do and upload will be interesting because you have that Teacher quality about ya
Really appreciate the time you take to share your techniques!!!
Many thanks. I have 4 silver dollars that have sentimental value to me for their dates. Although they are from 1888 to 1923, they are not collectable. They were very dark with tarnish, but bacame sparkling and shiny after your treatment. Thanks, Dave
Surfacesofie you aren’t supposed to clean those I think
Yea, cleaning silver coins DESTROYS their value, you just turned a possible 100+ dollars into about 40-50 dollars.
Randomness Amethyst not bullion though
That's why I kept it around 50 minimum, since each is about 13 or so in silver content.
Jerry Diaz No, it is still worth it's weight in silver no matter what condition, unless there is a loss of weight. For example, I buy "junk" silver for its weight, not face value. Cleaned or not, it's still silver, worth it's weight. You never clean a coin that has "numismatic value ", but junk...no worries. Either way after this cleaning method, he said no scratches at all. Win win situation for him.
Heat the baking soda in a 450 degree oven and it becomes washing soda. This works better and is especially good for cleaning rust off iron using the battery charger method.
What a GREAT idea... I don't have any silver coins but my wife has a lot of silver jewelry. It was the easiest clean method for small silver jewelry and even the chains came out fabulous... Thanks a million. BTW I up to about a hundred of your videos now and still haven't found a way to contact Beau about his recommendations on Garret and how to donate to the cause... Thanks. MIKE from Idaho
Jewelry is ok but once you clean a coin not only have you destroyed history but also scammed yourself out of whatever the coin was worth.
I have used this method several time since seeing this video, it works great on coins I find under pine trees. Sometimes the crud is so thick though, I have to use a soft toothbrush to get it off under hot water. Even so it leaves no scratches, it is great! I do not recommend letting it sit too long though, it will give a worn coin and unnatural, just minted glow.
Did you know you can use aluminum foil, fabric softener (1/4 cup) and a tablespoon of salt to do the same thing? Using hot water, not boiling water. It will work real fast and clean 100% better! As a matter of fact, if you leave a coin in this solution more than 10 seconds on each side, you will ruin the coin. That's how strong the solution is.Awesome video. Thanks a lot.
Nice! I'll have to give that a try on some of my more junkier silver to see how it works out. Thanks for another great tip.
Very cool. I've used toothpaste or baking soda on my silver scrap coins and just rub it under water bc it doesn't matter if I rub or not,..but this is a good method for cleaning coins without the rubbing. Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Always an education. Thanks, Chigg!
This sure looks to be the easiest and most effective way to make them shinny! Thanks!
Shared this video on my Facebook, you are explaining things very easy so everyone can follow what you suppost to do. Thanks again for this vid Beau!
Great info on using baking soda to clean silver coins ! Will use it on my finds ! Thanks for sharing
Great method Beau, I do that too. I use water as hot as it comes out of the tap and get pretty good results too. Nice video.
Awesome results! Once I get the tarnish off my silver I give it a bath in lemon juice. I got that tip from someone here on RUclips. So far my silver has stayed tarnish free. Thanks for the tips. HH and Merry Xmas.
RIP your coin's value.
Tried it out tonight and it worked great. Thanks for the video!
That is some good tips Beau... Thank you for all the videos you share!
I used hot water but never thought of heating it more ,thanks Beau
awesome. saving this vid for future reference.
Hi Beau. Great method for cleaning Silver. I'm definitely going to try this. Thx for the tip. I sure do hope you have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New year. -Drew
This works! I did it tonight...Thanks Beau
WOW!!! Thanks for this!!!!
I know
@@mythicming ok
does rubbing the coins with baking soda and water (paste) hurt? Thats what ive always done without problems. Questioning if im possibly scratching the coin by using the paste? Thanks!
Works great:) all I ever use is baking soda. Happy Holidays:) Thanks for sharing:)
What are your thoughts on using electrolysis to clean sliver coins? I have found some silver coins that had crusty, hard, black stuff on them and the electrolysis took it off! Of course, valuable coins I wouldn't do this with, but these coins were unreadable, and now look great! Love all of your videos, look forward to the next one!
I used baking powder a tooth brush and some hot water it worked really well
Woww. Thank you for this video. I have seen so much for silver cleaning but this was the most easy to understand. THANK YOU for sharing. :D
thanks aqua chigger! great name by the way!. I've tried the foil, tablespoon of salt, cold water trick on sterling silver silverware tho I've always worried that I'd ruin a coin by cleaning it wrong thus de-valueing it, just in case one day I found out it was a rare, unique, priceless item. lol
I have found a jewellery cleaner that claimed to be used on all metals, gems, soft stones like opals etc. I started using it on junk jewelry and bravely worked up to my good stuff. They all look great. As an extra cleaning step, I use a small battery operated jewelry cleaning machine. puts the sparkle on them. just dry and wear.
It's called Jewel Renew by the makers of Ring Snuggies. I get it at Walmart 2fl.oz.(59ml.) for $4.88
I really go thru it so I always buy 3/4 at a time. try it and let me know what you think. I will HOLD MY BREATH!
Perhaps all in my head, but thought I noticed in using dip jar cleaning solutions for 925 jewelry that it removes detail on coins and filigree on other items. From your demo here and how great and safe the results appear to be, I shall be giving this a go, thanks! ps and without salt as not sure if it would make it more corrosive to detail.
Yup....... Good Job on the silver....... what do you do to clean up old bullets, I have a few with a white clay coating that wont wash off with water & soap.....Maybe I can give it some electric treatments? never tried to charge electric into lead before?
Finally a great video showing what to do with silver and cleaning it. If you don't mind, I would love to download this vid, incase I need to clean my own silver in the future :D
I sure hope so aswell! Got a few silver coins that could use cleaning. including a silver trading token from the US (one that no one seems to reconize)
***** Here a link to a photo of this coin: tinyurl.com/p2qu3ew Perhaps you know what it is. and what date it should be. ;)
***** it should be at least 80s/90s, I got this one from a fleamarket early 90s. When I got it, it was entirely black. Did not know it was silver until a year ago.
Oh I will for sure! It's a nice and rare peace of my small coin collection! :)
Superb man.. It really worked.. Thanks a lot
This is my favorite method as well. Nice video, Beau
can you elaborate on the differences between baking Soda and baking powder? .. I can never seem to understand, aren't they both bicarbonates of salt ?
Donald is 100% correct, never rub, clean coins, if worth more then face, leave it alone!
OUTDAMNSTANDING VIDEO! Thanks, Beau.
Just to say... wow! 👍
i tried on a stuborn black rosie that would come clean and now its clean. ty!!
Do you find the sulfur fumes to be tolerable if done in the house or do you recommend doing this outdoors? I am assuming because there was no explosion that the sulfur fumes won't ignite with open flames?
Is it ok to add Luke warm water as I don't want to add hot water as I will be using it for some religious silver items in it .. Will Luke warm water also give same result
thanks for the tip! and your outtings. happy new year to you.
Great video!
Thanks for sharing your info.
Always enjoy your videos.
Great vid Beau... Simple, easy, quick and inexpensive! HH, and Merry Christmas to ya!
Awesome video...very helpfull and not damaging.
great tip Beau , merry christmas
I gave this a shot on some very tarnished American Eagles, worked very well. I have a couple of proof medallions (mirrored finish) with toning on the edges, will this technique work on proof silver?
Cool technique! Thanks for sharing!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
i tested it was very good .. thank you ♥
ty for idea I have very big round silver platter that's enscribed on front and back and about 75 years old and weighs heavy
Very good instructional video.
Thank you for sharing!
Subbed.
Would this be ok for pre 1947 silver british coins? the 50% silver ones (shillings, florins etc)
Webster I know this comment is old but wondered if you tried it out as I'm looking to do same thing with my New Zealand 50/50 silvers thanks
hi,good video. I saw a similar one and the person added salt to their solut8on. they actually boiled their water with salt in it and poured it in then added the baking soda.
after seeing this video I see the salt must not be needed. does anyone have any comment on adding salt? does it make things work faster or is it unnecessary all together?
thanks
how do you chose spots to detect on or is it just hit and miss thanks
thanks im just getting into detecting I live in florida so I have a good chance I figure to get some good finds I tried a lil around the historic side of my town but it seemed picked clean also been trying abandoned houses and plan on some beaches
Great video, thanks!
Thanks so much this will help me make $300
Thanks for the tips!
Excellent as always. Can you also make one for cleaning Copper coins? I have many large cents that I've dug that I'd like to learn best way to clean em. Thanks!
thanks for the great tip karla happy holidays
Good stuff brother, Thanks for sharing man, DD.
Beau:
Cleaning coins and reducing the patina brings down their value GREATLY !!!!!
I'm against coin cleaning but in this case, it doesn't bother me because this coin have no numismatic significance.
Hey Beau, how do you clean old gold gilded jewelry? I found an old Mormon pendant that I think is gilded. It's in pretty good shape, but I'm afraid that if I clean it too much, i'll ruin it. What do you recommend?
Thanks man, love your videos.
Hmm ok. I wish I could send you a picture of it to see what you think. It looks gold, but I'm just not sure exactly what it is.
Great video friend 👏 👏 👏 thank you 🙏
I heard those denture cleanser tablets take off the tarnish as well
Hey beau, was wandering how much profit you get monthly for metal detecting and do you sell all of the relics?
***** thanks for your vids and answering our questions. oh, and merry christmas!
Does that devalue coin or show as “ cleaned”?
Nice one I will give that a go.
Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna try it...
beautiful works like a champ
Thanks a lot just used it on my mercury dime worked!
I guess I will busy now.. .awesome !!!! Thank you ;-)
Great tip, thanks!
I found a 1972 half dollar and I want to clean it what should I use? It's not that dirty just some smudges but still would like to make it look nice.
Okay thank you. I'm trying find methods to clean clad coins and suggestions?
I cleaned clad coins I dug with vinegar and baking soda it helped a little but not much. I also cleaned some wheat pennys' with little result.
Lol is there ways to make a coin tumbler?
Okay thank you i used to clean coins the way you did in the video clad and wheaties.
AuqaChiggar, Very Cool. Looks fairly simple, I'll have to see if I have any baking soda and try it on a silver bracelet that I have been trying to clean. Tarnex didn't work so I'll try your method if I can find the baking soda. I know I have some somewhere around here. I definitely have everything else. Thank you for the tip!
Okay, Thank you again for your tips! I love to watch your videos! I'm going to the water today to metal detect near it as my detector is not water proof. I think only the coil can go into the water. I'll check my manual again before I try it though. HH and GL!
Thanks for the video very good info appreciate it
What year is the coin
Thanks for the tip! nice clear video, cheers,g.:)
Will that work with silver plating too?
might try that at weekend ..will this method work with silver plate or just full silver ?
yeah i would think so beau theres nothing in there that looks to harsh ..might try it on a few cheap bits first just to make sure lol
Derek Naylor Metal Detecting UK ml
i tried it yesterday on a heavy encrusted mercury dime from the bay (saltwater) - did not work well.
Could you also do this with coins that are not silver? Or is it only for silver coins?
+Aquachigger I would be more inclined to a mechanical process such as tumbling with stainless steel shot...
Lollimewire on copper use vinegar and salt
I wonder if I clean clean Nickels with this method?? Just curious
Don't clean coins, it will reduce value and beauty of a coin.
Does this method gives you scratches ?
good demo
Saved me spending £20 on cleaning solution
nice video!!!..just Subscribed!!..keep uploading more!!
That is a great way of doing it an inexpensive too.
good info thanks
Can i clean my medals using this method
How long will it take for your coin to tarnish as it was before you cleaned it?
We will all be long dead by then :)
Does this remove toning?
can you use baking soda on all coins?
Matthew Larkin probably not since this is chemical reaction between the silver oxide (tarnish) the aluminium foil and the baking soda.
Add Viniger and a chemical reaction happens and works great
I soaked a regular quarter in vinegar and I could read it before I soaked it afterwards I couldn't even make out it was a coin
Beau will this work on v nickles?
Nice video, will log this away in the memory bank. Any more detecting videos coming up?
thats so cool
