This video is just great. As a beginner in Xiangqi who has some chess experience I understood everything because Joel shares his thought process very effectively. I hope much more of that will come in the future.

This really shows how out of depth I am.
Me when I lose 4/5 pawns: "Well, fuck."
Him when he loses 4/5 pawns: "WELL THAT WAS TERRIBLE OF HIM."
    O.o

So like in chess development > material. We need more lessons like this but a bit better production wise cause the sound vol was a bit low on that one.

Great first lesson! Thanks very much for posting this. It answers most of my 'opening' questions with one simple principle.

Hi, I am discovering Xiangqi for 2 weeks now and i am enjoying the gameplay very much. These video's are great. Thanks and hopefully we will see more video's. Do you know of any clubs or people in the Netherlands that play Xiangqi regularly?

Specialy the tempi quantification and the confidence and the plan to materialize this advantage

Wow. Coming from Western chess, I'm totally dyslexic on the material vs tempo difference in Xiangqi.

I mean in Chess if you hang three pawns in the opening and have no clear attack its borderline resigning. But here the cannon going around collecting pawns seem bad. More complex game tree i guesss

Excellent advice and guidance, but is it possible to have the pieces with the correct xiangqi design as I find it confusing using mainly normal chess picture?

Yea, it is sad and unfortunate that Chinese Chess, Xiangqi, does not have enough people trying to popularize it as a complimentary game for those who play International chess.
I know that plenty of people play it in China, Viet Nam, and in communities outside those two countries, but there is still no well developed software which can use the engine to teach people similar to how Chess programs do. The notation is cumbersome, and there are shockingly few instruction books in English.
It is sad because as an established variant of Chess it is a very fun game. As a player of Int'l Chess I really enjoy Chinese chess. The same issue is the case with Makruk. I guess Makruk or Cambodian Chess at least has an excuse which is that it never became popular outside its region.

That is why our channel is producing English Xiangqi content! Hopefully more people will be attracted to Xiangqi and give it a try!
Speaking of the Xiangqi engine, we have recently implemented an analysis board on Xiangqi.com, you can try it out on play.xiangqi.com/analysis/board

I think to much value has been given to the pawns. Let an AI run lose on a ton of games and you'll have your bot fixed

    Couple things:
First: is fide rating and xiangi rating comparable to one another
Second: these tips are now null and void due to the engine’s upgrade in strength
Third: you didn’t actually explain much besides attack and defense
Fourth: you provided no logic or reasoning behind your moves and not even to explain strength and weaknesses in the position which you also didn’t do or not much of, anyway.

Fifth. You said a couple of things. So don't be so critical.
