    Nice project! I was a Ford truck mechanic back in the seventies. I use to say it had a mystery shifter. You never knew what gear you were going to get. When the shifter was in any gear there was enough slop for another couple of shift patterns. I like the fact that it has a Y block. All I remember was the FE/FT engines, the Cat 3208 and the 401/477/534 Super Duty gas engines.

      I had a buddy that drove a 1969 cabover Ford grain hauler with dump bed during harvest for his brother in law. I have no idea how he could find a gear in that thing! I thought maybe because the thing was 20+ years old at the time (This was the 1990's) that maybe the linkage was worn out but looks like this was status quo. I do like those old trucks.

    • @FlatThunder
      @FlatThunder  2 года назад

      Thanks for sharing Bill! The shifter is still a little mysterious to me now. I'm used to top loader gear shifters that area way less sloppy. I too am starting to like the nostalgia behind the Y Block engine. It's a piece of history. Thanks for watching! 👍😁

    Most Y-block canister filter's take a either a Wix 51004, 51271 or equivalent. There are some variations over the years but those are the common filter element. Can convert to spin-on with a Napa 4124, also available from places like Dennis Carpenter, etc.

      Thanks! I will look into these parts. I'm leaning towards a spin on for functionality, but it kind of removes the historic element. Thanks for watching! 👍😁

    Wix 51271 Cartridge there was a adaptor available to use a spin on and that took the old fram PH8A, yes lubing all the joints on the shift linkage is needed plus it looks as if it has a 2 speed rear end . If it doesnt have air brakes it wont be wedge style but if memory serves each shoe has its only wheel cylinder most likely they are partially rusted and in need of rebuilt or replaced it will take a little research but most likely they are still around nos if nothing else

    Greetings from the Ohio Porters. 🤩 Love the old Ford Cabover!🥰 I drove a 1965 C800 back in the day. Have such wonderful memories of that truck.🥰 It had a 390 gas engine…I don’t remember what oil filter or gas filter it took, other than the fuel filter was an inline metal casing. The exhaust manifold leaked, so we had to finally take it off and replaced the gaskets so that it would sound right. It was a 5 & 2 speed. Those trucks were so awesome. Hope that you really enjoy this truck! It’s unusual, classy and has lots of style and character! Oh, make sure you check the wiring harness under the cab/behind the grill…it has a plug that can sometimes come disconnected. Mine did. Good stuff! Keep On Truckin! 😎🤩✌️

    • @FlatThunder
      @FlatThunder  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! I will check that wiring connection. It would be really cool if that was the problem area and a easy fix. Right now none of the accessories or lights work. I was shocked the ignition/starter circuit was functional. She's had a few farmer modifications! The old C800 sounds like a fun rig! Thanks for watching! 👍😁

      @@FlatThunder 🇺🇸 That plug caused lots of problems for us until we found that it was loose. I remember being on the side of the road trying to get it running and spending hours of troubleshooting on it. I have many fond memories of that truck. We put hubcaps on those Dayton wheels, lots of lights on it, a hitch for pulling trailers/mobile homes and a toolbox behind the cab. It got lots of use! I loved that single axle tractor and drove it to high school.🥰 You could turn that thing around on a dime and it sounded really good once that exhaust leak was fixed! I’m glad you have the truck. Great job showing the OIL changes.
    I know what your going through. My 353
    Detroit, on my Backhoe TOY just like you and the RED girl. Has ALL filters canister just like your truck. Like some of the other comments. Sense it's basically a big SOCK. Why not just clean the element good. I have the same issue on shifts on SeaGrave. I have my DASH points for where to push shifter. I some times just sit in cab when I Run her. And just shift without moving to FEEL it go in gears. Plus ithe shift lever shows you where a reference point is. The comments are right. I have a tone of linkage going back to
    Spicer. Then there this funny looking YOKE
    Because of my PTO for pump. I removed a lot of the RODS going back to spot were pump transfer case was. There is a guy who has a Transfer case for my Pump, he will just give me.
    I like the idea though of just having a portable pump. Then I can spray water as I drive her.
    Keep doing the how too videos. I learn so much from you. I will do a U- Tube video on my 71
    SeaGrave for you to see my Engine, and it Running, I have 4 SIRENS on her. Two coaster
    Two Electric.

      I will watch the video of your SeaGrave when it's uploaded! The free transfer case sounds like a winner. 'Anything free is worth saving up for' 😁. In case you haven't researched it yet, IIRC there are adapters available to convert the Y-block to a spin on type filter. The various displacements were installed in a wide variety of Ford & Mercury cars and trucks. I'm pretty sure Lincoln as well. As for the Y-block engines, there is still a ton of parts available for them if you wish to improve what you have. If you plan on keeping her, you might look into some upgrades in the future. Best wishes! 👍🏻🇺🇸👨🏻‍🏭

      Hi Max! I researched a conversion kit to convert her into a standard spin-on filter. However I haven't gotten any further. The biggest hold up on parts is finding a solid reference to indicate I have the correct part number. I think I started referencing a Lincoln or F100 model. I am still slowly working on her. • @landistitman2973
    @landistitman2973 2 года назад

    I watched all the other videos and I love this truck. I saw in one of your videos you have the fuel pump wired to the coil pos. That should only have about 6 volts in the run position due to the points. Usually during cranking the coil gets 12v and then it goes through a ballast resistor to drop to 12v. This might be why you had fuel pump issues. Might be worth looking into a electronic conversion for the points as well.

    • @FlatThunder
      @FlatThunder  2 года назад

      Hi Landis! I believe you are correct. The stepped down voltage at the primary side of the coil made my fuel pump operate at a whisper. I temporarily gave it a manual feed from the battery. She needs a ton of wiring to get all the systems working correctly. Thanks for watching. 👍😁

    Actually very impressed. You did guess right where what plug was on the gearbox. The old oil was just moisture contaminated and very old from the looks of it. Metal flakes maybe to do the fact the clutch master went bad a long time ago and the shifting was incorrect to begin with and some of the gears got grinded in the process.

    • @FlatThunder

    While not as much fun as driving it you could jack up one side and put it in high gear and let it run a while to get things warmed up. Also to "wash out" a trans rear end even an engine get them warm drain the fluids put in some diesel fuel and run them for a short period of time. Re drain and refill with clean oil. I have done it many times. The diesel has enough oil in it so it won't hurt anything and the thinner liquid will wash out all the gunk and fines. In a pinch you could remove the oil filter to find out which one you need then wash it out and reinstall till you can get one. Old stuff is a lot more forgiving than the newer stuff.

    • @FlatThunder
      @FlatThunder  2 года назад

    • @MaxGiganteum
      @MaxGiganteum Год назад

      Never run an engine without oil! If you're going to do the old timers diesel trick then do it immediately prior to your oil change. You pour ONE quart of diesel fuel into the crankcase when the engine is hot and let it idle for 5 or 10 minutes then promptly drain it plus swap out your filter. Will this help keep your internals clean? Yes. But so will using a quality synthetic oil. On a seldom used vehicle, it doesn't make sense to run synthetic but that's an owners choice. Best wishes! 👍🏻👨🏻‍🔧🧰🇺🇸
