      We had two C's, an 850 and a 900. The 850 had the 534 and it had plenty of power to haul 550 bu. of corn and keep up with traffic, even on the interstate when we hauled to a processor in Indianapolis. Two speed axle and 5 speed tranny which would hit you in the leg trying to get low or reverse, would hit dash in 2 and 4 and the seat in 1,3, and 5. They came out with an update on the shift linkage that took most of the slop out. THe 900 had a 401 (destroked version of 534 and 477) with a 6 speed Allison and it was a dog, mostly used to haul in from the field to bins in low gear. Lots of room in the cab, hot in summer, cold in winter, noisy all the time. Under load the manifolds would be cherry red, impressive at night but not so great in a cornfield. Finally scrapped the last one out this summer, sad to see it go but had no use for it any more and got over $1000 in scrap value.

      We had one in our fleet, an LN 900 with the 534 and its average fuel mileage was 2.7 mpg. The others average 4 mpg but gas in 1979 was still 53 cents a gallon for much of the year. When it hit $1.30 in early 1980 they parked most of the 534s.

    Nice truck !!! I had a 1966 T-950, with the 534 cuber. 5 + 4 transmissions. Originally had a fifth wheel plate, changed it to a winch truck. That engine is a pulling marvel, had the biggest Holley carb I ever seen 😂👍

    Our reserve engine(pumper truck) was a 1969 c600 with the fire service version of this 534 monster in it! Distributer had dual points set up,had the magneto ignition system for a backup. Had a 5 speed trans,and just a rerend. I got the points cleaned up and gapped and my Lt. Got that magneto nightmare lined out,and that was the runninest ol truck I ever seen. Loved it!
    Tried to buy it,but a neighboring volunteer fire department got it instead.

    Back in the 80's & 90's I was a firefighter. We had an 85 Ford pumper with a 3208 cat, a 5 speed trans. With a 2speed rear end. We always split shifted our truck. I was surprised to see you didn't. I guess you had a much lighter loaded truck since you just straight shifted your truck. I have to say watching your drive video made me homesick for our old 85 Ford pumper. Take care of it and yourself. Look forward to next video.😅

    • @kbittorf335
      @kbittorf335 7 месяцев назад

      Most volunteers could not figure out the 2 speed. The main pumper when I joined was a ˋ74 F-750 391 HD with a straight 5 speed and that truck could haul weighing in at just under 24,000lbs. fully loaded. It would easily achieve 70 MPH on the open rural highway! Those were the days...

  • @keithchrysler3732
    @keithchrysler3732 5 лет назад +5

    I had one of those. A 1960 F-700 that had a 292 v8, a five speed overdrive and the rear end had been replaced with an international K-8 axle. I used to haul 22,500 lbs of corn or soybeans to local elevators. Drove like a Cadillac!

    my Dad had an old Ford Louisville dump truck years ago and it was a petrol/gasoline automatic with a single 4" exhaust out the side and going down a hill under decell it would backfire mega loud and shoot a 3 to 4 foot flame out the pipe.......was awesome......LOL

  • @mikemorgan5015
    @mikemorgan5015 5 лет назад +13

    Poor dude has been working feverishly to get the old truck to start ever since the last video. Wonder where that ticking sound is coming from?! I can personally attest to the backfiring. As a kid with no money, years ago, I was trying to save gas by shutting off the engine on long downhills. Had just gotten a brand new muffler on my 1970 jeep pickup. Using this gas saving trick, I forgot to turn the key back on before I put it back in gear. When I released the clutch, obviously, nothing happened. I quickly reached down and turned on the key and BOOOOM!! Split that 2 day old muffler from stem to stern. UGH! Had to run with about 10 lbs of muffler wrap on it for a few weeks until I scraped enough money together for another new muffler. Valuable lesson learned. Fun memory in hindsight.

    Memories memories! In 1977 I learned how to drive tractor-trailer in a 1964 Ford F-750 with a 534. Noisy and of course steering by armstrong but I loved the old trucks. Probably the worst part of learning to back up was the 113 degree Phoenix weather that day!
    The 534s were good pullers but drank a lot of gas, often less than 4 mpg city in a tractor-trailer job pulling heavy loads.
    Wow never seen one with a huge crack in the exhaust manifold. Shouldn't be hard to find one as Ford made these motors for years and years.

    Tim, Glad to hear that old C-series fire off and run finally, it's crazy, but you talk about the technology and design of that truck, the C series was first introduced in 1957, it ran basically unchanged untill it was discontinued in 1990, only receiving few minor changes in styling, and minor engine and brake upgrades in it's entire 34 year run, the 57's and 1990's looked identical.... our last 1990 C-series still had the hole punched out in the doors ( rubber plug installed ) for the bracket that held the original 1957 style mirrors.... Love the channel, " later tater "

      YES, longest running Production line FORD C style of cab. I remember we had them in Fire Department, had a neat Looking Rescue body type. Door behind passages door with full cab bench seats. The back had a walk in full length door. I have pictures of me in cab. This was late 70s. The Post office in my area ran them as main depo to post offices as the bulk mail carrier. I always craved for that job running those great looking mail carrier. I worry that a Fire might start from fumes, on that sparks blowing around that cracked manifold. What say you.

It had a 391 Ford engine in it . they couldn't keep a pair of mufflers on it due to it backfired everytime you swaped gears . 5&2 transmission. They finally Straight Piped the truck after 2 pairs of blown mufflers. That 534 V8 was a huge beast of a engine! I wonder what the red line was, like 3,000 MAX? I like the brake booster, the remote location under the bed, twin boosters on the drivers side.
    I was really surprised that the WW2 6X6 duce used in France only had a 270" inline 6. I would have suggested a much larger engine, but I guess they did not come along until the 50's. A 330" Ford flathead V8 would have motivated the trucks at closer to 45 MPH.
    I think this 534 would be great to drive with a 25,000 pound GVW taking grain to a elevator or something, while using a 330" V8 would take a whole lot longer to get there.
