    Couldn't agree more with the stage 0 before you start adding power. I have a stage 2 (350bhp) v70 2.4 T5. It is tuned by shemtek (u.k based) and he always recommends stage 0 before tuning. A brief explanation of this would be
    -Plugs and coils. My car had the original coils on and after I tuned it, each one was dropping one after the other. I replaced them all for genuine in the end.
    -Pcv system replacement. Expensive using genuine parts but prevents your cam seals and crank seals leaking in the first place. Also a bad pcv can cause maf error codes which can upset a tuned car
    -replace all the one way valves on the engine and check for boost leaks from pipes and the turbo inlet pipe.
    -replace tcv (turbo control valve) if its old as these commonly go wrong on higher mileage volvos
    Like the dude in the video says, tuning volvos ain't cheap, especially if you want the job doing right. But it's soooo worth it 👌

    great outline on safely modding P2s! we need more content like this.
    There are actually some very recent tuners entering the p2 community. developing tunes for 04 and 05+ P2s for all trim types. they currently have multiple examples of reliable stage 1 and 2 tunes on the road. stage 3, 3+ and 4 are currently being developed and tested now. some very talented tuners and builders got together and have been working to understand how volvos ME7 engine management system works in great depth. they are not just re-using existing tune files that got passed around and adjusting them...they are developing their own tunes from scratch which is huge.
    Hilton has been the only option for P2s... but his backlog is like 6-9 months right now which is a bummer. luckily the p2 community will be getting the support its needed very soon!

    have had several volvo 5-cyls, never had a turbo, until i got a 2000 s60 2.4 200hp all leather spaceball. One of my first was also removing the last muffler that was brand new haha. Then i cut out the airbox, dont care that i suck warm air, i just wanted the sound. Then i got a stage 1 ecu tune. 250hp, man, it felt like i bought a new car again! after that one spark went out, but before that i checked my injectors. And yeah, the injectors really needed a clean, did a flow test, and none of them where in sync. One of the injectors flowed like 1/3rd of what it should, it was really bad. Changed out that one and flowchecked and cleaned them out with injectorcleaner and a cleaning program on the flowchecker. Anyhow, check your injectors is what i want to say to everybody with this story.

      Volvos fuel injectors tell you plenty of things. They sure let you know how expensive they are, but also the severity of how it treats your car when they’re not working correctly. Very good point with the fuel injectors!

    I just found your channel and subbed 🤘
    I own a 2000 V70 T5 Geartronic with about 311.000 Miles (500.000 km) for over 5 years now. It has been a learning curve... But there is a lot of information about these engines out there, just well hidden🤫
    What i have learned so far :
    2.4 and 2.5 engines need to be shimmed! Even stock the cilinderwalls tend to crack at the top.
    It is a lot of work but in parts it's only the shims and a gasket-set for the head.
    The 2.3 engine's (like i have) don't have that issue😁
    All of the engines have oil seals in the sump that are critical for the oil pressure, replace them for oem and have one less thing to worry about.
    They all have a PCV system, replace only for the ones that have Volvo stamped on the bags😉. The sets cost a bit more but i have had trouble with good branded others causing my camseals to blow out and leaving me with an oil soaked timing belt, happy days 🥳
    For sparkplugs only use - i know i am repeating myself a bit now - Volvo original sparkplugs. These engines just love them ❤.
    When changing the timingbelt make sure the waterpump has a metal fan (is that what you call the part that pushes the coolant??). There seem to be pumps with a plastic fan and according to the forums those can break in time.
    As for the oilcooler on the back of engine, the one that was leaking on your S60, try to find a bigger one.
    They are sold for crazy money by "performance" brands but the very same bigger ones were used on -i think- certain XC90 engines and those have the same fitment.
    And ofc do a good quality oil, oilfilter, fuelfilter, airfilter, coolant, ignition coils(oem) and your engine is good to go!
    Radiators with the plastic sides, vacuümhoses, enginemounts, original plastic air and pressure piping are all weaknesses with age.
    Changing the rods for H-beam rods seems to be the general advice if you want to take the tuning seriously, a path into the mist i am about to take 🥴.
    Now the limit will be our automatic gearboxes, from what i understand it's critical to have an extra cooler for the oil and to have the tune not go flat-out in first and second gear and she will be able to take a beating. But i haven't found any numbers on how much they can really take.
    I hope my essay here helped anyone out there, my rambling is pure from my experience and in no form do i claim to know it all so please do comment if you (the reader) disagree.
    These Volvo 5 cilinder engines are something else..... 🥰

    • @Maartjinski
      @Maartjinski 11 месяцев назад +2

      Also if your engine runs a bit rough, has starting issues and/or has poor gas mileage it's likely that the coolant temperature sensor (near the thermostat) needs to be changed. It is often overlooked when diagnosing a problem bc scanning software usually doesn't pick up on the bad sensor and the gage on the dashboard isn't effected by it. The gage shows a temp calculation by the ecu. From what i understand the gage also isn't very precise and can't be fully trusted.

      I'm Dutch and i am on (i think you call it) benefits as my right shoulder has been upgraded with a steel ball joint and i am no longer able to work. Wrenching results in days of pain but helps to keep my sanity.
      The 850T5 has always been on my bucketlist but i couldn't find an affordable one.
      So i bought this car "cheap" bc of the mileage as a project car and as a big family car to take on holidays.
      We have a tiny shed and i have had to do all the work outside with jackstands, handtools and a basic obd plug with a free diagnostic app. I've managed to just keep her running and spread the costs by upgrading only when parts were in need of replacement or if i could find a good deal.
      There have been times i just wanted to sell her for scrap and be done with it (even recently 😇 ).
      With the help of a Haynes manual, RUclips, forums, advice from Volvo specialists and a lot of patience i really got to know my car and overcome every hurdle she's thrown at me thus far 🤞
      I just love my Swedish fast brick😂

    What's up friend!!! First of all I want to thank you very much for bringing this type of professional content, since there is not much formal information about tuning Volvos. Secondly, I also want to thank you for taking the time to answer each of the comments on this video, really thank you very much for supporting this community.
    I would like to ask for your advice on the small project that I have in mind, I have an automatic volvo s60 2007, sadly in my country (Mexico) manual volvos s60 and R are practically non-existent, and although I love the car, the engine, its incredible sound and His performance wanted to know if it is feasible to tune the car even if it is automatic, or what would be the limit of the transmission. For example I could do the remapping and get the power up to 300Hp, however I don't know if the transmission would hold. I have also seen some things about intakes and I have seen that the vast majority put blue (snaab) however I wanted to know if it is possible to create one from another material, a personalized one since shipping is quite expensive for snaab.
    I have many doubts about whether to start the project or whether to look for another platform like a 350z or something like that.

    • @WhipGetters
      @WhipGetters  Год назад

      We both want to say thank you for all the good vibes you’re throwing our way! We really appreciate you supporting us while we try and bring better and better content everyone’s way and push Volvos to a higher standard. And about your project, depending if you car has a turbo or not, you can modify the car either way to a certain point. There have been plenty of people modify the N/A cars. This can range anywhere from having an exhaust, custom intake piping, porting and polishing the intake manifold, and sometimes even a tune. With turbos it’s a different story. With turbo Volvos you can do a tone more. Tuning, intake piping to aluminum, bigger turbo, injectors, ignition coils, downpipe, transmission cooler, and much more! As you stated, the transmissions in the non T5s and Rs are hard to hold some power. They’re basically glass if you’re not careful with them, we’ve been there done that… a lot of the turbo models can hold anywhere from 300hp to 350hp reliably if you have the supportive mods and you DON’T launch the car from a dig in automatic transmissions. The automatic Volvos don’t really agree with launching from a stand still position. This can overtime or even a couple of times ruin the transmission very quickly!😮‍💨 As long as you keep your maintenance and care for this car no matter model or engine, it should take care of you for how long you want. Our S60 2.5t has 179,000 miles and it’s a stage 3 big turbo. We’ve had some rough bumps in the road to that complete stage, but giving the car what it needs to maintain it, has gotten us that far! Hopefully some of this info helps. If you need anything more don’t be afraid to ask!😎👍

    Good basic info, everyone forgets stage 0 before mods. Also those new to modding should also consider supporting mods besides power adders. Adding 150 hp means nothing if your transmission hasn't been looked over, same goes for brakes and suspension. Did this on my IS with no regrets. Spent more $ on brakes, suspension, transmission than i did power adders because power means nothing if you cant get it to the ground or control it.

    I've got the 2.4i inline 5 in my S40. It's got 130K mi on the clock and I paid a shop to do the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, injectors, brakes & fluid, and a bunch of the suspension (shocks, struts, tie rod ends); all of it at around 120K mi. Serpentine belt is intact, no cracking or fraying, haven't noticed a slip. I *think* I can get to the ignition coils myself without bringing it in for a service. So the million dollar question: is it possible to do crank seals and cam seals without a proper mechanic shop? Is there a way to know yes/no they definitely need to be done? Is this beyond the scope of a shady ree mechanic? Cheers and thanks for the great content!

    • @WhipGetters

      When we did our crank seals and cam seals at one point and whooooh let us tell you, it was an adventure. BUT not impossible. We had the timing wrong after countless times thinking we fixed it. Just make sure to check your ps and qs, and always try and watch tutorials. There’s plenty of really good ones out there that will help you. The only real way to know if they need to be replaced is oil leaking. There’s no other way to really tell if something’s bad until it shows itself. @@ryanpillay2679 pretty straight forward. Theres some good write ups on volvospeed. Its been 2 years but you need the 99-00 front engine mount bracket, the 98 accessory bracket bolts up with 5 out of 6 bolt holes so you can use all your current accessories (alternator, ps, etc). You use your current crank sensor, and cam sensor on the rear of exhaust cam. The rear of the intake cam is already threaded for a rotor plate, you pop the plastic cover and drill the hole 1/2" deep (cant remember exact bit size but on the forums). So you can attach your 98 rotor and distributor cap. The accessory belt fits slightly tight with rn idler pulley use belt 060690 Napa part# if cannot get this specific belt punching in part # online should give you dimensions to find similar. Your stock hard line fuel lines wont fit the bend over the cam cover i used gates e85 submersible fuel hose from the regulator on the rack to jic fitting at the rail. • @WhipGetters
      @WhipGetters  2 года назад +2

      Since it’s the naturally aspirated one, the exhaust system set ups will be a little different. But what you can do is do a muffler delete and factory resonator delete and install a smaller but high flow resonator which should give you a nice purr and some great noise for not being super loud. Our S60 being straight piped is loud but not as loud as some N/A 4 bangers and v8s straight piped. The odd firing pattern of the 5 cylinder gives it a lower tone. But if you want some nice purring and noise, that should do you good! Also there’s no such thing as a stupid question!😎

      It’s always the smallest things that have the biggest impact. Our S60 is having a whole fuel pump problem, which we have to fix anyways because the fuel cut that happens just makes the car not drivable.🫤

      @@WhipGetters thanks for the reply mate! So far my car haven't had any jerking or turn off by itself. But then, was expecting to check on the fuel pump too.
      Btw, i just replaced the aisin gearbox coz it got filled with gearbox coolant.
      So, after changing the gearbox, i could feel the gear changing wasn't that smooth. Felt like it shifts hard from R to D and likewise. Other than that frm 1st to 2nd and 3rd too. Was kinda stressed up to drive in jam/city coz if it shifts down, could really feel the jerking. Any suggestions on this?

      Majority of the FWD Volvos came with the really shitty transmission I think it’s the AW55-50SN Trans which sadly couldn’t handle a lot of power once you started. After a while the S60 transmission is was slipping and slamming into R & D whenever it was warm. We replaced the transmission to one with way less mileage, and once we did that, everything with the transmission was fixed! Also, good to notate, the FWD Volvos do NOT like hard launches!😂

    What is the performance potential of the 2.5L 5 cyl? Whats a typical stage 1 make, stage 2 etc? Quarter mile times? Im interested...nice alternative to the price of an RS3 for that sound!

    • @WhipGetters
      @WhipGetters  Год назад +1

      The potential can be tremendous but that all just depends on your budget. There have been guys taking these motors and making them complete monsters making 500hp reliably but that takes redoing the internals and more. Stage 1 - 3 is definitely worth every amount of work put into it. From 0 to 2 it’s a completely different car. Stage 3 makes it a completely different animal! For the quarter mile times we’re not sure as far as modified cars, but there’s plenty of data online for stock forms of the cars!👍

      Not sure what you’re asking, but we think you’re asking how to do stage 3 on a P2. Normally you’ll do your stage 1, and stage 2 to get to stage 3. Everything that supports stage 3. Either stage you’ll most likely need a reliable tuner that can have your car run nicely at those stages. It’s not too difficult to get their, especially if your pockets are deep!🤙

    Did you have to change anything for the 18t turbo or is just a bolt on

    • @WhipGetters
      @WhipGetters  2 года назад +1

      You should be fine, just make sure your flange for your exhaust down pipe is angled if angled. The 18T I got had an angled exhaust flange and bolted right up to the exhaust manifold. If yours is straight flanged, find a straight flanged 16T or 18T. If you have the same flange, it is a direct bolt up. If this was confusing just let us know!😎

    • @lynnmei4346
      @lynnmei4346 2 года назад +1

      No. Do not get misleading. 18T can be bolt on. BUT it will BENT your ROD. This problem has been discussed a lot on Volvo forums. 18/19T K24 turbo bolt on is a guarantee BENT ROD. You will need a special TUNE for big turbo.
      For the flange part. All TD04HL - xxT turbo share the same exhaust housing.
      The only safe choice for bolt on is 15g/16t.
      Btw. I own 2 850R sedan.

    • @WhipGetters
      @WhipGetters  2 года назад

      You’re right, but we weren’t misleading! Of course any bigger turbo will require a tune and it’s supported mods as mentioned in the video. It also squares down to what block you have as well. Understandable, and you taught us something we didn’t know either!😎

    Just wondering about the exhaust, you mentioned a 3" straight pipe, is that 3" turbo back, with decat and muffler delete and single exit?? If that's the case, do you suffer from drone at all, if so at which RPM range? I have a Ford Mondeo 2.5T (UK) with the next gen B5254T3 engine with 3.5" down pipe, down to a 3" decat and a 14" straight through centre resonator with rear muffler delete which then splits into 2.5" dual exit after the rear subframe and it drones between 2.5 and 3k revs, just wondered if it's the car, engine or exhaust setup..

    • @WhipGetters
      @WhipGetters  2 года назад

      The car has a single exhaust. Full 3” off turbo back. No resonators, no mufflers, no silencers or cats. Drone really isn’t bad in the car. It probably is the worst on highway rides from 60-80mph. Other than that the odd firing pattern of the 5 cylinder and the turbo doesn’t make it drone like you’d think! A lot can do with exhaust noise as far as engine modifications too. That’s a whole other book of things, but mainly it’s just the exhaust!😎 We hope this helps!
