    You really can't beat the sound of a howling 5 cylinder turbo! You make a good point, the B5244T5 from the 05-09 S60 T5 is an awesome alternative to the B52544T4 found in the R's as they are nearly identical engines aside from the 81mm bore which is less prone to cracking vs the 83mm bore.

    V8 issue with balance shafts was only in first production years and it only concern XC90. Issue was caused by balance shaft bearings. The issue was solved in mid 2005, so all MY2006 models with V8 should be ok. Everything with chassis number greater than 212032 is 100% without this issue. S80 V8 didn't have this issue, it was only XC90 thing.

    The early Yamaha V8 for Volvo (2002 - 2005) had an issue with the balance shaft chamber that didn't have a drain hole in the chamber. Moisture could get in there and the balance shaft would become loose. In fact, it was advised not to do a engine pressure wash for this very reason. It was labor intensive even to fix a loose balance shaft. These V8s are found in the XC90, again 2002 thru 2005 models. By the time the V8 was available in the S80 (beginning with 2007), the issue was corrected with a drain hole that was incorporated in the chamber design.

    Technically the 6 cylinder you mentioned *is* a Whiteblock. Redblock versus Whiteblock essentially means (old) iron block engines versus (newer) aluminium engines. Formally, the Whiteblock is known as the Volvo Modular Engine. It was designed to be available in 4-, 5-, and 6-cylinder configurations, and be mounted in either transverse or longitudinal platforms.
    As others have pointed out, the engine nomenclature for the Whiteblocks actually made a lot of sense and gave a lot of information. So now you can break down what the names mean, one of my favourites is the D5244T (particularly the D5244T22). It was a 5-cylinder Diesel, 2.4 litre, 20v turbo which produced 220 horses and 310 ft lb in stock form and can be easily modded for much more power. Those things pull like a train!

    The D5's are really popular in Europe. Strong, Powerful, Tuneable, and most consider them to be BULLET PROOF!
    Not quite as smooth as a straight six, but they make a great sound.
    It is also not uncommon to encounter D5's that have done 300,000 miles or more, and still pulling like a train.
    Just make sure to keep the oil and coolant changes regular, no more than 10,000 mile intervals for the oil, and 30,000 between coolant changes, and 50-60,000 for Cam belt, water pump and tensioners.
    Check the EGR and Throttle body for carbon build up, as well as the intake every 50-60,000 miles, and clean them. Also check the swirl flap assembly fir wear, these may need to be replaced too at some point.
    And it goes without saying that ALL diesel engines will encounter DPF issues, especially if used for short trips constantly, so keep that in mind, you may have to remove the DPF to give it a thorough clean at some point. But with regular TLC, the Engine should outlast the rest of the car, unless you are OCD about detailing.

    FYI, the B6XX4X series are also whiteblocks. There are also three generations of whiteblocks, the original B6XX4X and the older B52X4X are N-series, with the turbo editions having the oil squirters feed from valves behind lids on the side of the block, and typically all had hydraulic lifters. RN-series got the new intake port style, VVT, mostly solid lifters and squirters mounted internally. On the 5 cyl. most things are interchangeable, between N and RN except the cylinder heads, which got different oil-return pads. On the 6 cylinder most anything is interchangeable between N and RN-series. The RNC whiteblocks, the 6 cylinder became its own thing with internal timing gears at the rear of the block, and selectable lift valve train in addition to normal VVT. The RNC five cylinder I'm not shure of how much, if anything, is interchangable.

    Not forgetting the B5234T3 in the T5's 2319cc. This engine was bored out to 2.4 and to 2.5, however the v70r 2.5 needed shimming to stop cylinder wall cracking so much better to use the 2.3! A simple remap can take this engine from 250BHP up to 326BHP

    • @tinybartini
      @tinybartini 3 года назад

      Exactly! I was going to say same - 2.3 T5 best option for 'reliable' / robust option to start with! 2001 pre-facelift V70 with it and Aisin auto box may feel sluggish at times and strained by that transmission, but still makes me smile in stock 250BHP / 2 tonne car. I really wanted 'R' but the prices never got down enough and never will, so V70 T5 was the only option, 3 years on, few things fixed and I still got it with 250k+ miles on the clock.

  • @T5_T-Rell
    @T5_T-Rell 4 года назад +2

    the B5244t5 is much better than the 4t4 found in the R, seems like alot of people in the volvo community are still blind to the capabilities in stock form. They can handle upwards of 600WHP. if you go on the forums there are some people making higher Hp on these engines. One of my friends from the other side of the U.S. Is currently making 530whp on his S60r with 4t5 swapped in. The engine is stock.

    I have a question,
    I want to turbocharge my volvo and i have a volvo 850 2litre wirhe 126 hp. How much boost/hp can this engine handle with high reliability?
    300-400hp would be enough.
    Thanks in advance!

    I’ve got the 2.0 v60 polestar, as much as I love the immediate power and snappy trans in it. I miss the sound of the 3.0 I had in my previous Volvo. I just couldn’t beat the price I got my polestar. Learning the maintenance nuances involved was a bit of a hurdle but overall I’m happy. I do think I’m going to get that beautiful 5 cylinder v70R if my car ever gets smashed. That sound is legendary, and even more utility with a bigger box. =)

    I have all 4 engines of the list you mentioned except the newer one.
    You are correct on the v8. The older ones with the red dipstick. The newer with yellow dipstick were modified by volvo. But still an issue and a pain in the ... to check.

    2005 to 2007 XC90s were the only years the V8 had the problem with the water. In the 2007 V8 S80 it was fixed. The transmission is the weakest point in these cars. Mine started slipping at 170xxx. I read that a cooler does wonders for it though. I sold my V8 S80 but plan on getting another one for a build in the future. It’s my favorite engine of all time.

      Do you think if you just kept the fluid good in it that itd be okay or does it get hot either way and need a cooler? In 2008-2010 different transmissions? Are they any better?

    • @MATRIXRAIN
      @MATRIXRAIN 4 года назад

      Volvo states It’s suppose to be lifetime fluid but I think lifetime to Volvo is ten years but anyway I still would change it at least every 50,000. Some say don’t touch it. I’m no expect so do your research. That’s not the problem though the valve body is known to be break down and need replacement. Not sure why maybe because of the powerful V8.

      My dad's V8 XC9's transmission started slipping at 94,000 miles (it spent most of its life in the Boston suburbs, so it probably shifted a lot. It goes into 5th at 35, so I do mean a lot). That trans sucks. I hate it with a passion. The gears are way too long (3rd is good for over 110 MPH), shifts take ages, and the programming forces it into the highest gear possible ALL THE TIME. The efficient tuning is what kills them I think. Slips the hell out of the converter clutch on each shift to try to be "smooth" when shifting into 3rd at 1300 RPM at 15 MPH. Burns the clutch and heats the fluid up like crazy. It's a bummer, because the rest of the car is so good. That engine is amazing. Screams like it belongs in a sports car. Has anyone manual swapped a Volvo with the V8? I mean, the TF-80SC was offered alongside the M66 manual on the S60R, so theoretically it might be possible?

    I have a 97 960 3.0L, I6, 24V, 181HP white block B6304S and it is one of the smoothest running engines Volvo ever made. I can get 28-29 mpg on the highway at 65 mph in a 3600lb car that has a .36 Cd.
    The thing people never realize is the 2.3L Red Blocks along with the 850 and S70 93-99 2.3L to 2.5L five cylinder white blocks and the 95-98 I6 white blocks are also able to easily last over 250K miles with routine maintenance. FYI stay far away from the pre 1995 I6 white blocks they have casting issues. The 1995 and up I6 white blocks are solid motors.
    You were talking about using a Volvo motor in a project car, I got a wild one for you. Since I stand taller than six foot it will never work for me the car is too small, but if you're under six feet tall think about it.
    The car is a SAAB Sonett III, two seater, fiberglass body, four speed, FWD that weighs in around 1800-1900 pounds. Think about the weight to power ratio with a 200-300 HP Volvo engine under the hood? They came with a Ford V4 under the hood making around 110 HP. A number of owners of these Sonetts in the seventies and eighties stuffed V6's from Ford Capri's in them.

    Regarding Redblocks.. Look for the Jens Gustavsson Dyno test engine. Stock pistons, 8 valve head, close to 1000hp
    Some things I like:
    -Easy to find and reasonably cheap - There isn't some variant XYZ which is the one you absolutely need to make power but is unobtainium.
    -High quality - Its very likely your 300Kkm block still has more than enough life left in it to make reliable double+ stock horsepower and rebuilds are a rare occurrence. Studs don't break etc.
    -Many of them are turbo charged and already making decent numbers in stock form - you're not starting with a weaksauce engine to start with when swapping or modding
    -Even the NA variants are stout and share many things with the stronger versions - I have been running a B230F+T at more than double the stock B230F power level for over a decade now and the engine just takes it with ease.

    I’ve got a couple questions that hopefully you can answer:
    I’m the 2nd owner of a 2002 XC70 with the B5244t3 engine.
    I’m looking to get more power for the wagon, but before I begin, is this block a good starting point for that goal?
    Also, in regards to the type R v70... I ran into a wrecked v70 type R and the exhaust was still attached to the body.
    Would it mate, or would it be beneficial to pick up to the 02 XC70 ?

    The 6 cyl is a whiteblock so this list has a bit of redundancy, I'd modify "whiteblock" at the last spot as the "5 cylinder whiteblock".
    As for those, if you want to build power, not just any 2.4L will do. You need to find one with an 81mm bore. The 2.3's all have this, you can swap in a crank with a longer throw if desired, or seek out the 2.4L with the 81mm bore which already has the longer stroke and slightly higher compression, but they're much harder to find. FCP Euro already commented the specific engine number for anyone interested.
