I've got a K8 1000 that I've had for 6 years, you might be interested to see how it compares to yours as I've done some modifications that you're tempted by. One of the biggest differences between new bikes is the gearing. Stock they are geared to do 101mph in 1st, which may be why you're finding it a bit flat. Mine is the following spec: - Arrow cans and decat pipe - Cresent/Micron headers - R&R remap 173rwhp 81ft lbs - Ohlins TTX shock - Ohlins steering damper - Kais fork cartridges - HM plus quickshifter - Brembo RCS M/C - Brembo radial clutch M/C - R6 monoblock calipers - Brembo discs - -1+2 gearing (I think, can't remember what I ordered now) It's a completely different bike now than it was stock. Also in regards to flickability, the 190/50/17 rear is a tyre no manufacturer uses, and stepping up to a 190/55/17 will make it turn in quicker with a slightly taller sidewall and should help flickability too. Either way, you can't go wrong with a K8 IMO!! Keep it up

I had a 2008 Gixer, the all black one. Bought it new and I sold it last year with 38,000klms on it. It had a full Yoshimura system, ECU flash, black screen. I never had it on track day but some of our very quiet, long straight roads I hit 296kph on it and 1100rpm shy of redline. I sold when I hit 63yrs old as I can't bend like a pretzel to fit on it. After I sold it, about 2months later, I bought a Royal Enfield Continental GT. Fun bike but no long distance bike, I have a HD Street Glide Special for that. So for my 64th birthday I bought, brand new a Suzuki GSX-S1000F. Pretty much the same feeling bike just sit upright a bit more. Oh on your Gixer pay close attention to the fork seals. I had to replace both. No brake problems though

Chops I’ve gone back to an older bike form newer ones ie R1, mt10.. I sold them and got myself a 2014 fireblade, it is what it is I use it for pure fun on a sunny day the throw it in the garage at the end of the day and don’t worry about it.. clean it put fuel in it and just enjoy it. Simple motorcycling but as much fun as you can have on the roads in the south east of England 😎
Come on Chops! We're the same age and have had a very similar biking history. Don't go all soft on us and keep moaning about the lack of a down-blipper, rev-match yourself and enjoy the interaction with the bike (and don't become down-skilled into the process! ;) :D ) I do like a QS for up-shifts, but want to do the rev-matching down-shifts still myself! :) Good review, shows just how little of the electronics suite goes towards enjoyment and usability of the bike, if you know how to ride.... Obviously, electronics make you faster on track, but unless you're racing, and pushing that hard, who really cares? :)
Even bikes in the sub 11-grand territory these days have transmissions and linkage so good, downshifts can be mostly instant and seamless. Just steady the throttle with barely any engine load, fan the clutch with a quick squish and that shifter drops at the toe seamless, engine jumps instantly to the lower gear RPM and you're all back with the clutch released and ready to either engine brake or blast off. Get a feel for this method under varying engine loads and you can be cruising at highway speed in top gear, in a couple seconds simply BLIP BLIP BLIP (down three gears in less time it takes to say "three gears" without any unsettling the chassis or smoking the clutch whatsoever) and WHACK the throttle off into the sunset with solid power. A clutch is a wear item, just like tires and brake pads. Don't be afraid to slip or fan it a tad, you don't need full-off disengagement, a big upset in power, a big lurch in chassis, a big gap in traction, followed by a slipping to match engine RPM to change a gear.
Like it ! Maybe £500 might get it up to date ? New rubber, discs, engine mapping, power mod ! It's not that far beyond what £20k+ will get you today ! Good stuff thanks for sharing

LOL Nothing wrong with that bike compared to today's. Lots of people still prefer something without the electronics. As far as what to call it: Gixxer 1000. That's how it's known in the streets. I'm not really a Suzuki fan, but when someone says they have a Gixxer 1000 I'm always happy to see one.
I made a Lamb Chop thingie and bought myself a used bike, a R1-16. It's been on it's side but after rebuilding it, ...can hardly wait until the snow will disappear. Living in Sweden.🥶
My first bike was a GSX-R600 K8 so looking forward to this! I always wanted the 1000 as the 600 isn’t a great road bike, it’s too flat until at least 8k but I loved the bike and always thought the 1000 would be amazing although these days I ride a S1000RR.
Had one of these since new, probably be the last new vehicle I will ever buy, so figured it was worth keeping. Over the years I have added a flat bar conversion (dodgy wrists), full Arrow system, PCV, 1 down on the front sprocket and 2 up on the back plus a taller 55 rear tyre...plus a speedo healer. I love it and it's plenty fast enough for what I need. Oh, and 'Analog' is probably the best description rather than Classic or Retro ;)
I owned a new k7 thou and modded it to death and the best mods were swapping the forks with k tech internals .fitting a WP rear race shock. Full yoshi exhaust system. Velocity stacks and pc5 yamaha R1 front calipers (huge diffrence in performance) braided brake lines ... one of my fav bikes I've ever owned !! I have a vid of it on RUclips with a silly loud exhaust before I fitted the yoshi system and i fitted galfer wavy discs front and rear and rear sets and a diffrent cam in the throttle and lots of carbon fibre 👍
Having owned my all black k7 thou for the past 5 years, I can say without a doubt, I don't need any other bike, this bike has it all, power, handling, looks and grace, I've recently ditched the twin arrows for an M4 streetslayer exhaust, and noticed a definite difference in the power delivery now that horrible cat has gone, my next things are a pc5, a brembo or hel master cylinder, and some new tyres, then it will be even better, enjoy the new ride chops 👍
You will not regret riding the RG500 Chopsy, I had a G reg 89 plate that I had in black, red and white, I regret selling it to the day, despite now having an S1000RR, I still miss it, crazy but true, the power delivery, the smell of full synthetic 2 stoke was intoxicating and those 2 upper and 2 under pipes from the square 4 smoking on start up were immense and very very satisfying ......... sounds like an awesome series mate, looking forward to it
Great video Chopsy, I have exactly the same bike. Bought it new in 2008 as a track bike, has a full yoshimura system and on track also a Yoshimura EM Pro ECU. Had to remove it for street use, if anyone are interested? The bike lost lots of power/Torque in the middle range with the std. ECU so it need a flash. Gearing gets much better with-1/+1 , a specially with a 55 profile tire . Helps the steering a lot, same with a good steering damper. I have Hyperpro forks and a re-valved rear shock with a progressive spring, made a big difference on the track 👍🏾 By the way my bike has only 2000 miles on the clock 😃
For a older bike I think that it looks better than some of these modern machines for sure. I've always had a soft spot for the GSXR from way back in the day as Suzuki have always had competitive solid machines ......even though they haven't been up there with their development as of late......they are still legendary. Great review again Chops......can't wait to see what you've got planned for it. 👍😊
@@LambChopRides Forgot to add you'll love the RD500 (bought one new in 1985 and wish I never sold it) never owned a RG 500 but had a RG400 import from BAT motorcycles in 1990. No electric start on these babies just a kick start, watch the 16" front wheel and narrow rev band and you'll love them!
I had that problem with brakes before. And fixed by cleaning and copper greasing the pins which hold pads, They was dry so it drag pads on and of when start braking and stop that if you put more pressure to the brake liver. Great to see some older bikes on Your channel.
Any casual passer by who didn't know bikes would think that a brand new bike. The slight paint coating and marks you point out are teensy grumbles. Seriously, what a beaut! I been looking at similar year MV Augusta F4's, and, like this, most of them are in immaculate condition for their age. But, I never considered a GSXr, so am watching this with much interest.
loved mine... best mod -1 tooth front sprocket at 10K it points at the sun lol... transformed the ride. Had the brake rotors replaced under warranty 2 months from new
Had me a K5 and just loved it, low kms and still had the stock pipe which was fine by me, quiet around town and really howled out country. the only big mod i made was to put a Brembo brake master cylinder and braided brake lines and she was good to go.oh i also had the suspension serviced, new oil and seals and i was a happy camper cant wait for the rest of the series Chops, Love that generation of bikes, keep up the good work mate
STRIP FONT AND REAR SUSPENSION AND GREASE EVERYTHING BEFORE THE SUN COMES OUT!!..! also while your at it check and clean all of the electrical conectors to avoid the green death!! That being said, ¬ I've had a k6 from new, ¬ oz wheels ohlins, 3 teeth up on the back, pipe, filter , power comander/quick shifter, with a custom map, and a set of helibars , I tried a few later models but other than a bit more top end they didn't offer anything more, except price, weight and nowadays complexity ( I can still service myne ), I appreciate how things have moved on in the tech department and as fantastic as it all is, how can you justify £20.000 + to go faster round a track. the old k6 has more than enough to enjoy a spirited road ride, without worrying too much if you bin it, , the only code it's ever thrown up in 15 years is the exhaust valve bollox ! all reasons why I still love it, !!. be careful chops ¬ you might end up loving yours!..
Keep, the twin cans… looks awesome and no problems with MOT, police or noise on track. Spend time and money on the suspension and brakes plus the gear emulator and power commander to open it up a bit.
Love this old bike series! It was either K5 or Gen 1 ZX-10R, both great bikes I just prefer the looks of the ZX and it has more sentimental value since my first bike with the original Ninja 900, the bike that started it all. With that said the '86 GSXR1100 has a special place in my heart :-)
A very pragmatic first ride review, can hear it in your voice. Some bikes blow you away as soon as you set off on them and others grow on you :). Hopefully with some tweaking you'll get the wow-factor!
If you can, dyno compare this with the new one. There would be timing retarding on the first few gears so get the plug for that for more low/midrange in 1, 2, 3. Go a lithium battery and single muffler to lose easy weight.
I'd call that a real one. Noughties bikes FTW. Fuel injection so no E10 gunked carbs, but no Euro p*sh. Love my 01 Ducati 750SS, the sound with twin remus cans and the clocks look like a Spitfire. Bellissimo.
Bike has 3power settings on lhs bar ,,read that an R1 throttle tube get the quick response you need ,, warped disc not give you a pulse at the lever ,, probably look at the head bearings ,,on the beast you put a translogic quick shifter ,, brilliant stuff glad to see you like it ☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
In regards to the midrange, the k7-8 gsxr ecu stock has timing retarder in all the lower gears, If you decat and then get the ecu flashed you could have that sorted out.
Have covered 100.000 km with exactly the same bike. Decat, akra single silencer made it more nimble. Best mod was drop a tooth on the front sprocket. Gave much more midrange for 20 € ! Had at least 4 warped front discs, common problem never solved. Breaking probably the weakest area of the bike. Bullet proof. Only a crash with a suv killed it at 130000 km. Still miss it.
First two easy things to do before thinking about getting new discs are to clean the discs with some fine-is sand paper or scotch-brite and obvs brake cleaner, brake dust builds up and can cause judder, it looks like the discs are older than the pads, poss not cleaned when new pads were fitted. Also make sure the front wheel is aligned correctly, as many people (even some mechanics) fit them without aligning before doing up the pinch bolts and that can cause judder too, rare but possible. Also saw people saying it could be your headstock bearing, at least that is easy to check without pulling it apart
There is a sweet spot with bikes around this time, 2004-8, the ZX10 and GSXR were light, good looking, powerful… afterwards they got uglier and heavier.
Older bike series? So much YES!!! Keep the K8 manual, Chopsy. Pure, analog, unadulterated fun! She's a sex machine. Glad to see no buyer's remorse. 👍👌 ❤❤
Older sportbikes in decent condition are as rare as hens teeth these days, good for you. I also agree with your opinion on road salt. I usually wait for a good rain before heading out on the highways in spring.
This is going to be a great series with the K8, and the retro/classic/old nails....will also be great: a real point of difference for your channel - you're going to be a busy boy!
Hey dude you just popped up on my feed I have owned a k8 and currently own a k7 I’m in the process of cleaning up a bit. I enjoyed you content. Congratulations on joining the gsxr bros!
She's a beauty Chops! Take it back to the dealer about the marks! If you don't ask!!!! Hope you keep the looks all original with the mods? Love the paint scheme and standard look.
So that's New tyres ,discs , rear shock, fork internals, headstock bearings. Power commander, link pipe, front sprocket, quick shifter, quick throttle 😂🤣😂🤣😂. Absolutely love how we all do the same thing. I'm going to be sensible and not spend a fortune on a new bike and then throw a couple of grands worth of upgrades at it.... but that's all part of the fun.
That coating you’re referring to that came off your bike.. it’s your first day excitement gloss coating coming off your own eyes..😁 It’s still a beautiful motorcycle! Maybe even gorgeous.
I got a K7. Dna airfilter decat exhaust and slip on and an ecu remap. bike produces 174whp if you do these to your bike it will really wake up. They got pretty good engines for their age
Chopsie, next year it'll qualify for classic insurance...that's why I bought a K5, living in Central London and it costs me £100 to insure....I fitted rearsets, a quickshifter and brembo RCS master cylinder...perfect cheap track day tool. I can also vouch for the comment re headstock bearings causing low speed judder. Enjoy!!
With a Ecu flash the low end mid range and topend will come alive even more.the Ecu is restricted very heavily in the Gsxr especially with the secondary throttle maps.great gearing for this bike is 17/45 if you weight over 160 and 17/44 if you’re under.a BMC air filter is recommend with full exhaust for this bike.these bikes can produce 170 whp stock motor with the right bolt ons and setup.great video 🤘🏽
Loose head bearings can give that brake judder you describe. In the garage hold the front brake on and rock the bike back and forward. If it's the bearings it can be felt through the top yoke. Have a look at a throttle tube from a 5vy R1 (04 - 06), if memory serves that will make yours q\a. Looking forward to the series on this bike.
I think we all have thought about what you're doing. when we get older and can afford the thing we wanted 10/15/20 years ago. we buy it, then find out how much things have moved on. I did a 2001 blackbird in 2020 £3000 then £1800 in respray fairing and wheels. new tyres. end pipes. leds. just couldn't ride it when caught out in the rain! sold it £3000. bought a XSR700 with ABS :)
She’s a sexy blue beast, buddy! Voluptuous and curvy K8💙 She’ll make a great track weapon. Get those front brakes sorted, some new Dunlop shoes, a sprocket swap, and that mid-range tweaked. And you’ll be laying down Rossi lap times. You made a great purchase, happy for ya, Chopsy🔝🎥🎬🔥🔥🔥🔥
Absolutely loving this series already !! I was disappointed with the mid-range of the 1000 k7 compared with the k5/k6 when they came out, but I rode a few with the de-cat pipe/ full systems and power commander - they were way spunkier in the 4 - 8k area 🙂 K7/K8 made 160 rwhp +/- when new.......is the next instalment ready yet ? !!!
On the rd drop the front 5mm, I also loved it with -1+1 gearing but as with a ecu map and a single can and decat also with a TRE these things were brilliant, it felt way more gruntier than my gen3s1rr I miss it dearly
@@patricksullivan6114 TRE(Timing Retard Eliminator). Most of the Suzuki models come with retarded ignition timing in the first 4 gears. This restriction is applied by Suzuki to limit the available torque in low speeds for road safety. After decat just do mapping on dyno for best AFR(Air to Fuel Ratio) and You don't need other modiclfications, You can do it but rather just spend time and money for good tires and go on track. 🚀
One thing to check for the brake judder , loosen front wheel and bounce the front end to settle and align the front wheel ... there is specific instructions in the manual . ..

Helps the steering a lot, same with a good steering damper. I have Hyperpro forks and a re-valved rear shock with a progressive spring, made a big difference on the track 👍🏾
By the way my bike has only 2000 miles on the clock 😃
Sounds great Olga 👍
For a older bike I think that it looks better than some of these modern machines for sure.
I've always had a soft spot for the GSXR from way back in the day as Suzuki have always had competitive solid machines ......even though they haven't been up there with their development as of late......they are still legendary.
Great review again Chops......can't wait to see what you've got planned for it. 👍😊
Thanks Dean 👍
Great video chops . Looking forward to the mods and you riding older bikes . We can't all afford new machines . Gixxer's forever 😁👍
i got me a 17 gsxr1000 too. its got a loud ticking till it warms up.
Get it up to Gav at MSG once the linkpipe is on for a proper remap and you wont need a power commander. GIXER specialists and all round great guys.
I've got a 99 600 srad, just love it cos it feels like I'm riding it instead of all the electronics doing all the work
Great flashback. I had a k5 for years and loved it. Only problem was keeping it corrosion free.
Still a thing if beauty, only miss ABS! Thanks for taking us along LCR
Thanks Iain 👍
Had the brake rotors replaced under warranty 2 months from new
Full pipe, Sprint filter, ECU flash, you'll have all the poke you need.
Love how it still holds up decently compared to new sports bikes, it’s a lovely example chops. Ride safe 🏍
I'd say it is a iconic used analog sport bike.
Best way to describe - Modern Classic.
Gsxr 1000 is a future classic for proper analog power superbike
First two easy things to do before thinking about getting new discs are to clean the discs with some fine-is sand paper or scotch-brite and obvs brake cleaner, brake dust builds up and can cause judder, it looks like the discs are older than the pads, poss not cleaned when new pads were fitted.
Also make sure the front wheel is aligned correctly, as many people (even some mechanics) fit them without aligning before doing up the pinch bolts and that can cause judder too, rare but possible. Also saw people saying it could be your headstock bearing, at least that is easy to check without pulling it apart
Great tips I plan to check all that stuff thanks 👍
There is a sweet spot with bikes around this time, 2004-8, the ZX10 and GSXR were light, good looking, powerful… afterwards they got uglier and heavier.
Look forward to the old stuff I’ve got a 2000 R1 and love it I’ll never sell it
Older bike series? So much YES!!! Keep the K8 manual, Chopsy. Pure, analog, unadulterated fun! She's a sex machine. Glad to see no buyer's remorse. 👍👌
❤❤
I’ve got a K6 and had the same brake judder, turned out to be the front wheel bearings and now everything’s fine
Thanks Gary 👍
You should of got a k5-k6 they really are something special
i'd class it as a modern classic in the making :)
Decent bike chops, you’re getting carried away with the mods already lol. Looking forward to the older bikes.
185 at the crank. I got an K7 with no cat and a carbon Yoshimura exhaust symstem and it makes 181 at the wheel and 121 nm.
Stonkin bike chopsy.. Looks and sounds amazing.. Look forward to your subtle changes... 😉👌
Hey dude you just popped up on my feed I have owned a k8 and currently own a k7 I’m in the process of cleaning up a bit. I enjoyed you content. Congratulations on joining the gsxr bros!
Thanks Rhys 👍
She's a beauty Chops! Take it back to the dealer about the marks! If you don't ask!!!! Hope you keep the looks all original with the mods? Love the paint scheme and standard look.
I absolutely loved my K8 brilliant bike. The knocking is the floating discs mine did it and my mates
OK interesting.. I've ridden other bikes with floating disks and they should do this.. maybe they just warp easy
A can of MrSheen the furniture polish is what you can gloss up your bike with "before" sale . 🤣😂. Genuinely works
Definitely would look forward to a RG500 review in the warmer weather Chops!
Enjoy!!
Congrats on your NEW ACQUISITION THERE'S NO GREATER BANG FOR THE PERFORMANCE BUCK THAN A BIKE🏍️
Future classic is a good description she is a keeper
K7 gsxr 1000 I had, with few mods and a remap made 171rwhp, was rapid!
That will do!! 😁😁
I had the k7, loved that bike, until a 90mph highside at pembury, 😳 when they snap.....they snap quick....... enjoy mate.
Dream bike riding sounds incredible! Great you’re getting that chance.
Get it in the garage and let’s see what you do to her.✌️🍻
You Sir, have an immortal bike.
I bought a street triple from a triumph dealer with what I’d call a bald tyre. They argued it had 1mm left which is legal and wouldn’t budge on it!
Take the PAR Valve off and lock plates. And take the injectors to be clean and balanced. Big difference on K8 balancing the injectors
Good tips 👍
its a beast on wheels belive had one best bike ever made
I think we all have thought about what you're doing. when we get older and can afford the thing we wanted 10/15/20 years ago. we buy it, then find out how much things have moved on. I did a 2001 blackbird in 2020 £3000 then £1800 in respray fairing and wheels. new tyres. end pipes. leds. just couldn't ride it when caught out in the rain! sold it £3000. bought a XSR700 with ABS :)
Try freeing up the bobbins on the brake discs. That might be the cause of the brake judder.
I agree the mid range is a bit weak
But a timeless classic for sure
I love the RSV, that is one to ride for sure
‘Future Classic’ is the appropriate descriptor, I believe Mr Chops.
i think a few minor additions like others are suggesting will make this bike awesome! Liking this series
Yes can't wait to get her all sorted Mike! Just need some garage space to work on her. Bloody Tuareg and 300 gasgas taking up all the spare room 🤣
I've never seen anyone on Gixxer with gloves and a jacket before. Nice video.
I own a k6 1000 with some mods lots of mid range power The yrs after that weren't as good
@@skatman3872 k5/6 were the creme de la creme of this era of gsxr looking forward to getting my hands on one ready for summer
@@rxl-soul8514 exactly right
@Rossi Carmichael probably wieght zx10s are nice I love the krt
@Rossi Carmichael Only the first gen ZX-10R was considered a « widow maker » because of the lack of steering damper (I think).
Get the gear selector emulator to get rid of the torque reduction in the first 3 gears Chops, makes the bike much more sprightly.
OK good tip 👌
On the rd drop the front 5mm, I also loved it with -1+1 gearing but as with a ecu map and a single can and decat also with a TRE these things were brilliant, it felt way more gruntier than my gen3s1rr I miss it dearly
Can you explain what to do once you decat the gsxr1000 About to add a Leo Vince to my K7 What is TRE? Thanks
I’ve just picked up a k6 one owner from new and love it
Do you think the k7 is a better bike than the k5 year
One thing to check for the brake judder , loosen front wheel and bounce the front end to settle and align the front wheel ... there is specific instructions in the manual . ..
Wow yes I forgot about this trick! Thanks I will check that 👍👍
Gonna love her I ride a 2006 GSXR 1000 in Sunny Cali great street bike!
I have a K8 1000 and a L7 1000r, love both of them for different reasons. I dont plan to sell either. The L7 is more of a longer cruiser for me
I have the K9, brilliant bike I've ridden the newer version and to be honest I prefer the k9 hands down
Good first ride out on the bike video and great to see you back on the GSX=R Lamb Chop.
Thanks Lyn! 👍
A proper ECU flash (and dyno session) would surely be much better than a Power Commander?
