- Yamaha R1 vs Suzuki GSXR 1000 - Knox Superbike Shootout 🔥 P.1 The road.
Though in recent decline, Superbikes are still the pinnacle of motorcycle advancement, performance, technology. They represent the biggest thrill in the motorcycling and are designed to do just one thing, go fast!
In this 2 part superbike shootout test, we put 2 of the most famous sportsbikes ever made head to head, on the road and on the track!
Harking back to 2001, the GSXR 1000 is legendary. Throughout its history, it’s won and lost championships, been plagiarised, battered and bruised and is currently facing extinction by the Eurocratic powers that be. But the GSXR in this test will endure, only facing death by thrashing or crashing! Most recently updated in 2017, our GSXR has a 200hp inline 4 motor with VVT, 200kg wet weight and sports an exhaust the size of a nuclear bomb.
Yamaha’s R1 is equally famous, the latest edition packs a 200hp wizz banging cross plane crank 4 cylinder. The modern R1 is a no compromise weapon and has experienced huge amounts of success in racing and in the showroom since its 2015 introduction. With sharp and compact looks, a sound more akin to a MotoGp bike and a top drawer electronics package, it’s a tough bike to beat.
Thanks for watching part one of the Knox Superbike shootout. In part 2, join us we turn the heat up, take a deep breath and twist the throttle till it won’t go any further at arguably the UK’s most gnarly track, Oulton Park!

R1
GSXr, it’s the most similar to superbikes of the early 2000s
R1 🤌
@@ashdivakaran9664 honda cbr is pretty close
GSX for the classic i4 sound
I’ll take the Suzuki GSXR 1000 every time.
Idem è la numero 1 sempre
🖕🖕 I will always take r1
💪😎
Gimme both 😎
Yes SIR I am totally with u on that one, F a Hayabusa and ZX-14 any day because I am a GSXR MAN 👨 😀 😉 😎 😄 👍🏽
Yamaha had not been the fastest but in design in style, cornering, stability, refinement and pure engine is what its been success and loveable....
Once your get your ecu flashed since it comes with so many restrictions you’ll change your mind
I really love that SUZUKI 💪♥️👍gsxrr
You just can't beat Gixxer design and decal looks. Suzuki for the win
i love the R1 in yellow 😍
That’s a tough one. Two great, but very different bikes. I’d probably got for the Suzuki, purely for a bit more comfort and that ballistic motor. The R1 soundtrack is epic and looks menacing. I think the upgrades on the Suzuki will probably give it the edge on track. Look forward to part 2. Awesome work 👏
Thanks glad you enjoyed it! Part 2 incoming v soon! Aaron KNOX
Gixxer for bang for your buck. R1 for the looks.
Awesome to be part of this project, both bikes look epic! I hope everyone enjoys the video, stay tuned for part 2... 👌
Dont they! Nothing like a proper superbike 😆
Both beautiful. I really love all the 4 SS 1000 Japanese bikes. In my opinion you can't go wrong with any of them. They are powerful machines, beautiful to look at, fun to ride and above all .. RELIABLE!
Id take the Gsxr over the R1 for many reasons, I do love the r1 though, the engine, the design. Its beautiful. But imma have to go with the Gsxr
What are your reasons that you would go with GSXR???
@@MrWolf2212 any reason you can think of.💯
@@MrWolf2212 because suzuki has always been better than yamaha when it comes to street bikes.

Just found this channel after getting back into motorcycle riding…I’m guessing you make protective gear? I’d buy your stuff just because of this content and your presentation! Well crafted video! Even though you guys took a “pillion seat” in this, you come off as very genuine gents. I’m pretty judgemental and don’t like most people😇, including many motorcycle personalities🤷🏼♂️, but I get the impression I could grab a beer with you guys and have a hoot! I appreciate the narration as well. A new subscriber for sure and a future customer (once I wear out all the gear I already bought last month LOL😅) ,now heading over to your website to see what the hell you guys even do besides making great videos
Many thanks for your kind feedback, really appreciate it! Yes we make motorcycle protective equipment, all of which is listed in the description. Our RUclips channel is important to Knox and one of the eays we try to express ourselves as avid riders and makers of riding equipment. Thanks for subscribing and hope you find some knox products you like! Aaron Knox
Really excellent video, thanks. Like the different take on the road test and the reality that there aren’t any bad modern bike. Just chose the one that you desire the most! 💪🏻👍🏻
thank you so much for this vid. you put a huge amount of effort in it that is clear to see, and lovely to see a comparison between two bikes that don't cost 25k... but two popular peoples favourites. great job to all involved. can't wait for part two
Thanks Doug, appreciate the kind words! Part 2 coming v soon. Aaron KNOX
Reliable for sure Suzuki Gsxr1000
I wish more reviewers made bike reviews like you guys, it’s so friendly from a “normal” person’s perspective. Kudos to you and your honest opinions. Loved every bit of it!
Gsx r is phenomenal bike on the road
Fantastic review! Love both of them bikes, its hard to go wrong with any of them. Class 👏
Any thanks Matthew. Bith are great once modified. Gsxr is a death trap as standard. 😀 Aaron Knox
In general, very good and outstanding video!
Very good depth!
Keep up the fantastic work guys!
Many thanks! 😀
Great video! Can't wait for the track part.
Thanks Carlos!! Aaron Knox
Another fabulous video... thanks
What a Video ! You put that...ache in the video that bikers go through on seeing a King lose his crown due to the recent "developments" in the industry. A brilliant comparo between 2 Monsters who will always be in their Prime, no matter how the industry changes, or who comes to Challenge them.
Cross-plane and K5.
Always relevant.
Always a treat when you guys upload, narration and cinematography is always on point! Such an interesting head to head too
Thanks a lot really appreciate it!! 🙏
That’s what I said! This is the first time I’ve come across this channel and I’m very impressed. And I’m never impressed LOL
The GSX series are crazy
Gixxer for me, good video guys.
There’s a shop in Marietta GA that told me that the gsxr is the best bike money can buy. I guess he wasn’t lying.
Loved the video, I had a 2018 gsxr1000 for a year before someone turned out in front of me and that was it for that bike. I was genuinely shocked to hear about the suspension woes on the gsxr, when I had mine I pushed it HARD on the road, looking at it now I’m glad nothing bad happened to me….it’s just so weird because I never once experienced those problems and as I said I rode it hard.
I totally agree with your opinion on the engine, it is an absolute animal.
Thanks! Clearly not everyone has the issue, but on track and especially the tracks we have here in the UK, the set up is not strong enough. The revised system has solved it! Aaron KNOX
What a great video!! So engaging, I loved it. Personally I'd go for a Ducati V4s on pirelli super corsa tires, but of the two on offer in this video I'd go for the R1. Mostly because I had a gsxr750 already 🤷🏾♂️
Thank for this shootout and whoever made the music to go with the sweeping vistas deserves a medal.
R1 all day EERRDDAAYY❗️😈
Great oldschool review!
Thanks for the information on these machines.
Gsxr 1000 Ghost Rider!!!
Great cinematics and great narrative.
Epic review!! Nicely done
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good video!
A correction: The steering damper in the stock GSXR is rightly a bit underdamped.
However, The stock front forks/rear shock are far far superior Twin tube style solid piston architecture units but with softer spring rates for the street. (Especially the rear shock)
This is the same architecture as Ohlins TTx GP shock / Ohlins NPX used in FGR300 fork
The Nitron NTR3 race pro is an inferior 'De Carbon' architecture shock but with probably stiffer springs.
Same goes with the TVT PRO fork cartridge. It's an open style 25mm piston cartridge kit with probably stiffer springs
The Nitron units can provide more damping based on how they are shimmed but cannot match the stock units in small bump absorption
Get the stock Showa to a quality suspension shop who can replace the springs and adjust the shims. These things won WSBK titles.
Thanks glad you liked the video!
Re the suspension components, totally incorrect. The showa stuff on the GSXR1000r isn't great and is not capable to manage the power of the bike. It had already been set up by one of the leading technicians in the UK when we had the crash.
WSBK titles may have been won on factory Showa suspension, but don't get that confused with budget stock suspension with Showa brand label on.
End of the day, if the stock showa suspension was any good, the bike would be stable and it isn't... further, if it was good, most track day riders and racers alike wouldn't swap it out for proper race suspension like the Nitron stuff, but everyone does.
Thanks, Aaron KNOX
Beautifully shot
Anyone else find it bizarre that the comments on most review videos these days are just praising the video and creators rather than talking about the video's subject matter? Makes me wonder if the majority of commenters are just bots and the dead internet theory is true. Anyways, the R1 wins just because of its sound ❤️
Imagine caring
Well, in this particular case I can’t chime in with anything worthy because I’m not the biggest superbike guy, but man the editing and quality of the videos Knox produce is outstanding - and I can assure you I’m no bot 😂
LoL, shhhhh.... you talk to loud. Ccp no like hahaha ha 🥸
I think it’s because it’s an agreeable and factual presentation without drama, so the outstanding facet is the content quality and not subject matter.
I thought that was just me, nice to know I'm not the only one noticing this comment section phenomenon
My name is Geoff and I also have that gixxer. Nice video production chaps - well done. Look forward to the next.
Thanks Geoff, wonder how many "Geoff's" own GSXR's 😂. Aaron KNOX
The cinematics and edits in this video was just amazing , id defo go for r1 but i wouldn’t mind a 2009 gsxr 1000 as they were rockets back then
Thanks Lewis 👍
I had a 09 gsxr1000, nice bike but my 08 zx10r is hands down faster
Thanks for the video albeit incomplete.
Anyway.... easy to say have the Suzuki GSXR any day of the week 👍👍👍
Footnote added 16/10/2022
Especially when the famous Suzuki Gixxer has just won the Motogp here in Australia 🇦🇺 👍
I have the 2018 gsxr 1000r. I did find it a bit unstable until tightening up the suspension. It still hits bumps better than my car. I love it as much as I did the day I bought it
Great job guys!
Thanks Mick!
This channel is heavily underrated
dope production!
Thanks 💯
Nothing beats the looks of the Gixxer nor the comfort if you are a grown up.
I had a ZX-10R and then a GSX-R 1000 a few years back. To me the ZX-10R was just a untamed beast where as the GSX-R was so smooth and much easier to ride fast. Miss owning a street bike. Live in AZ now and great weather but drivers are crazy.
Love your work brother! Good to see your success building 👌👍
Many thanks Andre! Aaron Knox
What a fantastic video guys, really well done. I recognized all of the places in the video, they are some of my favorite riding spots, Hartside Pass, St. John's in the Vale, Bassenthwaithe etc. it's actually really weird to watch haha.
Well done, lovely machines.

R1 all day , now on my 6th 👍 only GSXR I’d have is the k5 k6 👍 had 3 and loved them things 👍👍🏍
leaving a comment for just the visual and audio pleasure this video provided me I mean the work capturing exhaust note and mixing it properly in video wow
Thanks Sumeet!
Very cinematic, also these bike manufacturers are my top favorites.
Thanks, glad you think so! Great bikes. Aaron KNOX
very cool video dudes :D
Many thanks!
Thanks for the vid. I own a GSXR-1000R but I feel like I never give it as much as it needs to perform. A shame. Still a really nice and comfy bike.
Any chance of seeing an in-depth video of the Starline dash on the GSXR? Been thinking about replacing my dash but haven't seen enough videos to drop for the buy.
A compare & contrast between Starline & OEM dash is hard to find.
Well tbh, we haven't fully got our head around it yet tbh. Plus we've had issues with the indicators since we installed it. The main benefit is for track work as it gives full data logging. Thanks Aaron Knox
@@KnoxArmour Come on then, I just need an excuse to buy me one :^)
I would pick the GIXXY but that exhaust though.
Yoshimura
Both bikes are lovely.
I've owned Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Ducati and, ahem, HD motorcycles in my 5 decades of riding.
I've never, ever, had any 'issues' with either my Suzuki or Kawasaki motorbikes and I simply cannot say that for the others. I've never owned a Yamaha, aside from a snare drum...
At this point in life, I'll take the relative plushness and comfort of the Gixxer even though the aesthetics on the R1 are infinitely better...thanks!
I liked the video lads, good shit. Where's this filmed?
Thanks! Its all in the Lake District, England. Thanks, Aaron KNOX
Nice!
thats great you guys have your own bikes and no press bikes, value arrives from personal use over the long haul not by paid manufacturers, thats what i do with my bikes i own and ride
I had a Tank Slapper on a dual carriageway, at 125 riding my SV100 back in 2008! Luckily, I just hit the tarmac and nothing else! Left Bikes alone for 8 years after that! Bought a FZR600 off a neighbour, rode it on the same Dual Carriageway as my accident and promptly crapped myself! Sold it immediately and just ride Vespa's now! Stay safe kids!
GSX-R 🔥
My dream bike gixxer😭😭😭
E muito bonita a cor da Suzuki e diferenciada!
Awesome video.. where was it filmed
Thanks Neil! All in the Lake District, its a nice place to be. Aaron
Loving the yellow wrap 👌
Lovely right hander there knee and elbow down 👍
Semi race semi road I'm running, send it and not over the barrier 😂👍
Looks great doesnt it?! Its actually a limited edition Kenny Roberts scheme from 2016. Thanks, Aaron KNOX
@@KnoxArmour ahh very nice yeah looks mean in that yellow, I have the 19 plate R1 in blue then I saw yours and thought damn wouldn't mind that wrap haha , ride safe ✌️
Problem with gearbox on mine at moment I'm hitting netreal or just completely missing it 1st straight to 2nd or I'm stuck in neutral, take it garage after work 👍
How much was the brake upgrade on the R1? Was it done in house?
Where did you find that awesome dash? Would love to get one for my gsxr
Loads of places sell them, they’re well over a grand though 😂
the GSX-R..... The bike has been one of closest thing to my heart
suzuKING,, 😀😀👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Not greedy or picky! I’d take either bike! I jus bought an ole 2001 R1 (6,100 miles mint condition) & my buddy has a 2005 Hayabusa 1300! These bikes are mad fast! 200-300 horsepower is mind boggling for 450-500 lbs bikes! Lol!!!!!
I went years without a bike while my kids were young! Feels great to be back in da saddle eating fiddle faddle 🤠😉😂
Great for you to get back on a bike! Ride safe! Aaron KNOX
Did I hear wrong or is there a hint of “fully stock GSXR is very dangerous, nearly fatal” ?
Didn't hear it wrong... the stock GSXR1000 is a dangerous bike and needs modification to make it safe. Aaron KNOX
Ive had two GSXR 1000s. an K5 chassis and now my 2017. 🥰
I have lived my life only with Japanese bikes from sports, naked to adventure bikes, Japanese bikes are so beautiful and awesome performance and gives us good comfort and confidence.
Awesome comparison. Just what I need when I’m trying to decide between the two.
I test road the R1 and didn’t really like it, it got too hot for Australia and was only fun when I got it on the open road.
I need to ride the GSXr sometime.
I’m hoping to get something similar to my ZX14r (ZZR1400) but 50 kg lighter
Go Hayabusa, +2 teeth out back BUT - swap rear tire over to a taller than stock 200/60 Ducati V4 tire and the thing will fall on its side like a 1k! Did it to mine. I also have the Greggscustoms Gsxr K7 tail kit on her and small front fender from a 600?. Theres your roomy sportbike that can handle and isnt fugly anymore. 4-1 exhaust and lithium battery its near 40lbs lighter than stock.
Thanks glad it was helpful. Gsxr is more comfortable definitely and some higher clip ons would improve again. Thanks Aaron Knox
@@05EVORS Very choice mods for the mighty 'busa!!
I miss my first gen 'busa...such a great bike. The only bike I've ever owned where I left it stone stock...stealthy speed is awesome...obviously.
@@elgar6743 why is it better than the Gen2
@@KnoxArmour Thanks. Keen to watch part 2.
Also, does the Showa BFF from the 1000r require upgrading too? I heard they’re a good setup
Will be getting my 3rd R1 this week. I never should have sold the first two. I did so with good intentions of riding more sane bikes in the future, but the Superbike bug bites hard. I keep going back. Once you know, you can't unknow. Even a MT10 can't scratch that Superbike itch.
Haha, yes well said, nothing compares does it! Aaron KNOX
What about Honda CBR1000 RRR SP Fireblade ?
The legendary Kenny Roberts livery, is spectacular looking, even on such drastically different aesthetics
I bought a new GSXR1100 in 1986. Been a big fan ever since.
Stick a full system on the gsxr , then take it too msg racing , they total transform the bike , smoother and they improve tc and quickshifter , and more bhp . 👍
9:54 is the most visceral impression of speed from a bike you get in the whole vid
LOL...right you are!!
Best Find of 2023 ! Let's get these gentlemen to 100k 🔥
Many thanks! Aaron KNOX
Well, if you ask me to choose a beast from these 2 it's damn difficult to answer that but going in deep and talking about my personal taste I would love to go with GSXR-1000R ( R version especially it has few more electronics and better suspensions), In terms of looks, again I love both the bikes but GSXR-1000 looks next level for me❤ In short I will go with the Suzuki with a heavy heart ( I have much love for the R1, I can leave 10R and S1000RR for R1)
I have no idea why some people find the gsxr1000 ugly, I mean the headlight isn't the coolest design but it's iconic
Have you ridden the standard model? The suspension on that has been good enough on the older years.
Haven't ridden the older model, but in fairness, I own the k8 GSXR 750 and have done most of the same upgrades on that to improve performance. Think the issue is that a monster 1000cc engine doesnt work well with budget suspension components. Thanks, Aaron KNOX
Gsxr ❤️
GSXR as a all round all day long magic motorcycle
The GSXR has a better engine and the R1 a better suspension.
Nitron shocks and forks are literally a work of art the finish on them 🥵🥵
And not to mention how well they work
GSXR1000 daily ride perfect for the road. R1 only for Track in my opinion not for long ride tbh
R1 is definitely less comfortable than GSXR1000. Thanks, Aaron KNOX
Lake District is so friigin beauuuutiful...if i had the chance I'd definitely build a tiny house on top of the hill and just sit there and enjoy the view with a cup of coffee in my hand....😍😍😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Yes, thats the dream!! Aaron KNOX
Switch from a 790 duke to a GSX-R750 I agree ergonomics aren't really a big deal. Doing a 300 mile days are equally uncomfortable IMO
Which roads are these, they look awesome!
All in the Lake District where we are located. Thanks !
I'd take both ♥️
the right choice! ;)
Given I just bought that K2 GRXR, I guess I made my choice! But without tech...nothing to get in the way!
I’m surprised to learn about the stock GSX-R suspension. These are supposedly the up-spec Showa fork and shock, certainly not budget. Equally surprised about the steering damper. I have a K9 with a similar unit and it’s excellent, I’ve experienced it do its job. Good to hear your experience though, much appreciated.
I would say someone’s run out of talent on that gsxr and are blaming it the bike. I personally own a 2021 gsxr1000r 100th anniversary edition and I’ve had no bad situations with head shake or it wanting to throw me off. I ride it hard on the uk roads which aren’t the smoothest. I’ve had it up to 180mph and it feels so planted it’s unreal. I’ve had the stock suspension dialed in by a professional to suit my weight ect. I really couldn’t be happier
Yes theyre supposed to be but theyre still v budget components. That steering damper is the same as on my 14 yr old 750. The new 1000 is a totally different bike tbh, different engine, frame geometry etc and is not stable when ridden hard. Thanks Aaron Knox
@@richardsmith7940 lots of owner feedback saying the same, its unstable and scary. Tbf, on the road you cant ride it that hard, but on track, its unstable as soon as you start going quick. Geoff was an international racer back in the day so knows how to ride a bike... Thanks Aaron Knox
@@KnoxArmour well I don’t ride mine on track so I don’t have an opinion on how it would handle in that situation but for the road with TC on setting 3 I can absolutely spank the arse off the bike out of corners and on the straights without a hint of stability issues.
Maybe the suspension upgrades would be a waste of money on a bike only used on the road but worth there weight in gold on the track where the rider is trying to shave seconds off there lap times
@@richardsmith7940 thats good. We'd at least recommend a proper steering damper. The stock one doesnt have any strength to correct an oscillation and theyre not too expensive for at least a piece of mind. Other than the stability issue, its a great bike... end of the day weve got 3 GSXR'S now 😄Safe riding. Aaron Knox
gsx all the way... ive seen pro racer dive on that monster
14:18 I assume you refitted the stock 2nd muffler to the R1 before weighing?
Yes, we just weighed as it was. Thanks, Aaron KNOX
You should check out the video of the 2005 gsxr1000 absolutely dominating a new Ducati on the track and the Ducati dealer couldn't figure out why. All the electronics take away from true rider capability I feel like
Both great bikes but if you're anything over 5 ft 8" tall, then it has to be the the GSXR! No denying, the R1 sounds great though!
I’m 6 ft 1 and love my r1
@@badass1g im 6ft 4,and its just a bit too cramped for me, although could ride it, but just not for as long as the Gsxr! 😂. Both great bikes though! 😎
