I agree, a little sidebar on "how to use this monster" would be a great addition to a statblock.

For the mirage arcane, use it to make a trap. Let the party walk into the illusion room and when it ends, the illusionary floor drops out and they're over a lava pit. Use it to basically lure them into traps

I personally would give our six horned demon lord a nice boost of 300 HP because in D&D 5e burst damage is king especially when you have a giant meaty monster like Baphomet. I also gave Baphomet back his breath weapon from earlier editions with some tweaks to make it fit with 5e mechanics. I also make his heart cleaver attack do way more damage averaging 50, and make the damage magical on top of adding some necrotic damage also giving heart cleaver the ability to negate healing for a round. This makes Baphomet a serious threat, and allows him to stand up to parties popping 100 plus damage in a round.

One last thing, I beefed up Baphomet's charisma and intelligence saving throws to a plus 11, and a plus 13 respectively as Baphomet is actually really smart.

Awesome! I'd love to fight him some time

I figure that Heart Cleaver with a range of 15 feet (and Baphomet's height of 20 feet) should easily be able to reach over a Wall of Stone spell (10 feet high) to reach a PC that is on the other side of the wall. Most PC's would not have the reach or height to be able to attack back with a melee weapon. This is another way for Baphomet to isolate PC's albeit it temporarily from him while using the wall defensively and still being able to attack over the wall.

Apparently in the old lore the damage caused by his magical weapon couldn't be healed through magic. Might make for a more Dangerous encounter

Some more interesting interactions with maze:
You are not incapacitated while there, so you can instead use your action to buff up, heal up, etc. if you don't like your odds of passing the DC20 check, and just wait for the concentration to be broken.
Since it is an ability check, it is also impacted by stuff like guidance, jack of all trades, hex and the Poisoned condition. So there are ways of swinging the odds in your favor both as the party using the spell and as the target of it.

It's worth mentioning that the charge attack places them at a juicy 15ft distance from Baphomet, conveniently the same reach as Heartcleaver, his other legendary action
Honestly, for the maze, I think an interesting alteration to it would be that he banishes someone into a maze, and he can then step into his maze spell and fight the person inside, and then they can be running around inside as he enjoys the hunt. When/if they drop, the spell ends and they pop out in unoccupied spaces. Or maybe it can banish the target to the Endless Maze if he concentrates the duration. Or at the beginning of the encounter, he randomly sends party members to places in his labyrinth layer. I dunno, but I agree the spell feels meh at best
Make the druid auto-frightened from the regional effect when they wild shape lol

My favorite thing in 3.5e Baphomet from Dragon 341 is this one simple feature where his horns do crit dmg at 19-20, and if it crits, it does x3 the damage.
It depends Ig on the party but in case they're stronger than expected its an easy last-minute change
Also another thing that I dont like (and its probably just in comparison to other demonlords), but I dont feel like Baphomet's INT is high enough (?), he's got the 2nd lowest next to Yeenoghu and in defense of 5e WOTC hasn't canonized the Tower of Science.
-But previously Baphomet owned a Tower of Science, and he used it to make his own demons from scratch (some sciences involved taxonomy, vivisection, dissection, bone frameworking and others). So he's a pretty methodical guy when he creates demons unlike the usual Flesh-warp route most demonlords do. It actually works so well that Goristros are owned by many Demonlords because they send hunters to kidnap goristros for their own use. Baphomet lets them do this because: he can make more, and cuz it makes him more famous.

Dang I wish that was canonized. That sounds like something that should have been in Mordenkainens

Looking at soo many dragon stat blocks, it’s feels like a typo frightening presences is a full action to use and not a part of his multiattack. Everyone else doesn’t have this problem even the Cyclops Borborygmos from GGtR understand how to be scary and smack peaple at the same time.

The biggest change that I saw between OotA and MToF is that all of the demon lords in OotA are immune to nonmagical piercing/slashing/bludgeoning damage, NOT nonmagical piercing/slashing/bludgeoning attacks, meaning that RAW demon lords in OotA are immune to fall damage but not in any other context.
My party pushed Yeenoghu down a 500 foot pit for zero damage and we didn't realize that the immunity was presumably because of a printing error in the book until months afterwards.

Honestly with how cool that would have been I understand being upset. That's a Balrog moment

We actually still keep the "damage" writing more
so we got no "drop an anvil on him" gigs
cuz we think its much more fitting for abyssal lords to always land on their feet when they're pushed off a cliff

I know this is old. I'm planning on running the creature for my players in a homebrew campaign. To handle the maze spell, I'm reducing the DC by 5 each turn. Thematically, it feels like the player progresses through the maze, so the DC gets lower (they get better) at solving the maze as they go along. This seems like a fair way to run it.

Im setting Baphomet up as the bbeg of a homebrewed out of the abyss. My party of drow will have to defend Ched Nassad from him, his demon creations and an orc hoard given to him by Gruumsh

Frightful presence DC is pretty high, and 120' radius is going to complicate matters for anyone that isn't a paladin or have the heroism spell or equivalent.
In addition he gets reckless attack and naturally has a +17 to hit so he's nasty.
I'd also add the Maze spell to him.
If I was running Baphomet I'd lead with Maze on any potential PC with low INT while engaging the Healer in melee, relying on fear to keep PCs from engaging. Then clean up the rest with multi-attack.

    • @MonstersMulticlass
      @MonstersMulticlass  2 года назад +1

Yeah I'd be interested to run him once or twice and see how much the fear portion matters.
But the +17 to hit makes reckless feel a little pointless unless you're just crit fishing.

@@MonstersMulticlass I'd definitely avoiding attacking recklessly with him.

I can't believe he doesn't have some form of knockback.
Plant life grows thick? I would make his whole lair difficult terrain.

My party is about to face him, the maze is on Roll20 with dynamic lighting so they are completely in the dark past where their characters can see.
I'm thinking Maze spell might randomly teleport the player back into the maze
