In my version of the story a Barbarian hero went to Avernus in an attempt to slay Yeenoghu with a war hammer and ended up hitting him in the scrot, and his healing factor caused the splattered sperm to grow into Gnolls.
It may not be what actually happened, but I tell the story like this because it is my job.

That seems kind of petty for demon lords lol
Probably not the lore I'd use. Not even sure why they'd be allies to begin with. I don't see Baphomet or Yeenoghu as the "allying" type.
You could almost make a more interesting story of Yeenoghu once being the hunting hound of a demon lord, maybe Baphomet. When the hound neared being as strong as the master, Yeenoghu could no longer be subjugated. That might have happened coincidentally around the invasion of an Elven kingdom. Baphomet might have "failed" taking the Elven kingdom, but Yeenoghu didn't because death and slaughter is his only goal.

“Some gnolls could suffer from a rare form of madness that could quell their intense hunger and evil instincts, causing guilt for their misdeeds and a pacifistic nature.”
This is official 5e forgotten realms lore. I don’t know when it was written in 5e’s lifetime but Wizards really seems to be on the fence with this race. I really wish they’d give more lore on these mad Gnolls because with this lore they could easily be made into a player race. Perhaps give them Fiend heritage like elves have Fey heritage. Or just make them Fiends since we can play as Sayters and other Fey

There's a gnoll fang of Yeenoghu in _Out of the Abyss_ that is affected by this very madness. He regrets all of the harm he's caused, and won't fight except in self-defense. However, the campaign states that if this fellow has something like Greater Restoration (or any other magical effect that cures indefinite madness) cast on him, he immediately reverts to the typical gnoll mentality.

I love gnolls and have used them since second edition. The Lovecraftian entry of the person who mentally connected with them in Volo's as well as the way they'll just rise up make them really work as enemies that aren't people and never were, more an infestation of hunger given physical form, which removes a lot of larger considerations. As a side note, Doresain was freed from Yeenoghu's service with the help of the Seldarine. This is why elves have immunity to the paralysis effect of ghouls.

It's been pretty fun, like when the party could have struck a serious blow to the cult that's trying to summon Yeenoghu but decided to take a long rest when they were hardly missing any resources. When they woke up they started to feel the effects of Yeenoghu lair and they all started to develop some of flaws, like the wizard who started to rail against civilization. Good times.

I can see Gnolls having different creation backstories on different realms, those on Toril are spawned from the hyenas that feasted in Yeenoghu's wake and are actually fiends, but on other planes such as Critical Roll & Eberon they had a creation similar to other races thus are humanoids. If we take this further I can imagine some planes where Elves are more fiendish, see the Terry Pratchett book "Lords & Ladies" for an example of this where they are closer to mildly psychic Dark Fae than the PCs of 5th edition.

It actually started sticking and there started to become good Gnolls following Gorellik vs the very pissed off Yeenoghu who was worried about losing his foothold on the Material Plane.

In my current Eberron game, I've always run gnolls as just another monster race with as much culture and freedom as any orc or goblin has in the setting. They tend to prefer a nomadic lifestyle and can get violent, but it's not like the "civilized" races are free from alleyway stabbings, so that's pretty much a wash. While somewhat rare, you can find gnolls in many walks of life in Eberron.
The most notable use I had was in the "Forgotten Relics" mini-adventure from the 5e Eberron book. The module has a bit where the PCs' skycoach is attacked by a strike team of Daask gnolls riding glowing disks through the air. I immediately replaced the disks with what are functionally flying skateboards (that work only in Sharn, naturally, and are incredibly unsafe) and described a punk-themed gnollish skater gang with piercings and wildly dyed mohawks that comes swooping through the 'canyons' between Sharn's towers, bouncing over obstacles and grinding along building facades. The players loved it, so I'm sure they'll show up again at some point.

Back in 1e/2e I had a campaign where I had one player's PCs fighting Yeenoghu, and another player's PCs fighting Baphomet - the two demon lords would both flee to an empty plane on the Abyss, and both parties would have chased them there, saw each other, and whatever happens would happen. Sadly one party completely destroyed Baphomet before he had a chance to flee. So I just had the plane start to collapse, forcing the PCs to flee into the empty plane where they would meet the others.

In 3.5 MM3 they restated Gnoll called Flind, in my game were the original creation of Gorllick and Yeenoghu, not having fully digested Gorllick can only create the Gnolls from the MM. But when a Gnoll eats a Flind they transform. In fact a Gnoll that eats a Gnoll with any template will gain the template of the Gnoll eaten. (It's a solo game for my buddy who is playing a female half-fiend Gnoll (Flind) fang of Yeenoghu, fighter 6/warlock 1.) He's hoping to have the campaign end with his Gnoll eating Yeenoghu and taking over his spot in the pantheon

I posted this rival to Yeenoghu to AJ Picket's who works especially well if you're incorporating Modern elements into your D&D setting.
Blaw Giza - Neutral Evil growing into an Arch-Yugoloth
Blaw Giza is Half Flind Half Arcanaloth operating an Inter-planear Crime Syndicate & Mercenary Force out of Sigil with aims of Godhood & displacing Yeenoghu over the Gnoll race, I guess I can name him Blaw Giza, Swahili for Dark Claw. Instead of being as chaotic as Yeenoghu he would have that nature tempered by his Yougoloth ancestry being a calm & calculating predator. Instead of dressing in ragged battle gear he dresses as a diplomat or if a modern version of Sigil a finely tailored 3 piece suit. His calculated cruelty can be quite Lawful if the situation calls for it, but he is not above getting his hands dirty either, & he knows that use of superior weapons, while less cathartic than using your claws, can cause FAR more casualties. On his person he carries a small firearm loaded with bullets made from Celestials bones, as he knows he's far more likely to be dealing with other Fiends via violent means. For Celestials he has plots in place to have them take care of any rivals & usually die in the process via webs of misdirection. If the Celestials he points at his rivals don't die, then it's FAR easier to finish off a wounded foe than one who is strong, go after the prey that limps after all.
While Yeennoghu is all about the beast's savagery Blaw Giza is focused on the incredible ability of Hyenas to get every last bit of use from what they kill & find, his watchword if forever Thrift. There is nothing Blaw Giza, his organization, & worshipers leave to waste if possible. While Yeenoghu leaves a battlefield drenched in filth & gore, if up to Blaw Giza every last inch of skin will be turned into leather or velum, & every possible bone put into use as a tool or trade item & absolutely anything of value taken to be used or sold. Sometimes they are so thorough that the area is cleaner than when they arrived. Mind you a forest won't be pristine, but instead if given enough time clear cut.
In service the agents of Blaw Giza are always practical & thrifty, letting NOTHING go to waste. Any enemy defeated is if retrievable made full use of, their skin, their bones, & if an illusionist is among his agents who killed them, their lives & positions as well. There's nothing like taking an enemy's position, organization, & properties, that's SO much easier if one can take their place & their face. If they had a sizable organization it's child's play to bring it down from within & liquidate anything of value if you are running it. The wise predator KNOWS to stick to the tall grass until it's best to strike when you can.
To his end of achieving Godhood Blaw Giza has infiltrated Gnoll cults not as leaders, but as advisors & lore keepers, all the better to rewrite the history & be the hand that throws the spear, letting Yeenoghu's faithful be the blade of the spear that they direct. Blaw Giza's also takes care to embrace mothers & caretakers of the Gnoll race, after all the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world. Also to that end he has taught his growing cult a rite that allows them to steal the memories skills, & knowledgeof those they consume if they make some kind of souvenir out of their remains. Frequently this is an unobtrusive ring or clasp. At greater levels this rite can be used to allow the wearer of the trophy to assume the appearance of those who they have consumed, after all waste not want not. In the Outer Planes Blaw Giza has mastered the art himself meaning he has the memories of any he's consumed, & sometimes those who have THEY have consumed, this makes his favorite meal filet of Elder Brain, but being able to masquerade as a Hound Archeon after dining on one has it's so that makes a great meal too. Indeed it's incredibly useful for a member of Blaw Giza's origination to assume the visage of an Angel in order to get a would be do-gooder to go on a rampage, or better yet a kingdom to go on a genocidal crusade "Because it's what Pelor wanted." Playing enemies against one another is a great specialty of Blaw Giza's organization & cultists. Rites are simple & covert consisting of a number of whispered words & hand gestures.
If Blaw Giza had his way with Yeenoghu's realm he'd stop the wasteful way the it's master leaves it untouched. As Blaw Giza sees it there's no point in having a forest if you aren't going to have lumberjacks at it, no point in having mountains if you aren't strip mining them, and a salt flat Savannah is screaming for SALT MINES. The Curswallows would be filled with oil rigs & poison harvesting stations, gathering up the toxin to be sold across the miltiverse. Everything in his worldview is a resource to be exploited to it's fullest. If you choose to Blaw Giza eventually take over the layer of the Abyss that Yeenoghu take over currently rules he'd turn it into an industrial nightmare where every square millimetre is being put to destructive economic use.
In his heart he aims to replace Yeenoghu in all things, including being the Gnoll progenitor, as all things can be conquered, even time itself, as belief makes Gods, so does it make their histories & the past of the Multiverse can be surprisingly mutable when it comes to the history of Gods. If he must consume other Gods, & Time itself in order achieve his goals, well ... a Gnoll is ALWAYS filled with hunger & Blaw Giza leaves NOTHING to waste.
Blaw Giza is usually armed with a small handgun in a modern setting, but will make use of anything he can get his hands on, being FAR more dispassionate than Yeenoghu about the act of killing, he just wants it done so he can loot the corpse & assets of a rival. Blaw Giza is also proficient with the "decorative" pick axes, mining shovels, & other farm equipment he has around his offices for "development."
    --------
My inspiration was the thoroughness of consumption of the Hyena, on the Savannah lions will leave the bones of a wildebeest they kill, the hyena can get at the marrow inside with it's powerful jaws. Nothing is allowed to go to waste, everything of use is taken. Th PCs could be put in a position where they can either aid Blaw Giza in his attempts to overthrow Yeenoghu or play them against one another, or you might make him into a full deity having replaced his predecessor in the past. Feel free to share this if you want.

I've been running a 4E game for a few years now with a player who's a gnoll rogue. His backstory is that he was a slave for a group of bandits that had captured him when he was young and made him participate in their raids. Shortly after escaping, he and the party stumbled upon his native tribe, where he found that his mother was the previous chief. He ended up being recruited by the medicine woman / witchdoctor / warlock named Urd who supported his mother and hated the new chief for turning away from Yeenoghu. And although he doesn't like Yeenoghu either, he ended up killing the chief and taking over mostly out of revenge for his mother who was killed by the new guy.
So anyway, Urd keeps pushing him to worship Yeenoghu, but since he hasn't yet, she's gonna probably find someone else to try to kill him and take the tribe next!
Basically, the gnolls in my campaign are on the edge of reformation, and as a rule of thumb, they're more concerned with the pack than with Yeenoghu, but if the alpha says to do something, they're gonna do it. The PC uses this as his explanation for why he hangs out with the party as he sees them as packmates (especially since they helped save him). As long as the PC remains the chief, things will be fine for the gnolls, but if someone else steps up, things might go south fast especially with Urd around and the PC being off on adventures all the time.

I'd love to run/play in a campaign where the goal is to help Gorellik overthrow Yeenoghu and 'restore' the mindless Forgotten Realms style gnolls to a more civilized state. Probably not any less angry, but less burn down your village and wear your face because they happened to be in the neighbourhood.

I found 5e PC stats for a Gnoll character online, and I'm currently playing one as a Path of the Beast Barbarian. Expertise in Survival, and can track anything like a bloodhound. His name is Ugot, he's always hunting because he's hungry, and his answer to any challenge is violence.
Very fun character! The Druid hates him because he's constantly eating small animals, and the Pacifist Wizard is perpetually horrified at the amount of violence he must contend with on a day-to-day basis.
Quote: "IF UGOT WAS NOT MEANT TO KILL, THEN UGOT WOULD NOT HAVE CLAWS AND TEETH . . . GET OVER IT."

I wish wizards would have kept using multi types for monsters. As long as you keep it fairly simple, you could easily keep gnolls as fiend/humanoid without breaking anything. I know this breaks some monsters like the giant/humanoid one with certain spell effects, but maybe spells with type specifics like that you could say it has to be pure type

I love yeenoghu's lore and tend to keep my gnolls as insane murder machines. Although, since any other race who falls under yeenoghu's influence starts acting the same way, I take that to mean all of that behavior is from the demonlord himself. So, if anything separates a gnoll from that influence, the creature essentially becomes a regular humanoid. (still affected by their own history and probably barbaric, but capable of civility and goodness.)

Here a possible origin of Gnolls, Gorllik and Enoghos that may explain the loop to the missing parts in the lore: at a point in goblinoid prehistory a subrace of these (possibly orks) made a matriarcal new order tribe leaded by 3 druid lycan orks that tooked the shape of werehyenas to imitate the social structure of these animals who the moast influncing of them who was indeed a female that wanted to break orcish traditional patriarcal stablished order revered (typical goblinoid inner strife) while the other 2 orks where siblings and although male were low in the ork chain of command and saw their opportunity for siezing power (plus the female was HOT from goblinoid standarts.. whitch does not differ way much from any other fay-blooded primal style humanoid), after the schysm they made their tribe descendants absorb in they're natural humanoid orcish features the hyena-like traits, following the matriarcal (still CE vertion) structure life stile. Thus Gnolls natural from the material plain could be in some other next edition a: "Creature type: Humanoid (subtypes: goblinoid, lycanoid, faykin)"; after centuries from the birth of this tribe the 2 brothers foght betwin themselves for power (but moastly for "the Chick") and amidst the fight they were attacked by a regular ork rival tribe who where specting just that right moment to ambush cause they considered these heretic in the eyes (or "eye", better said..) of Grumsh (plus wanted to expand lands.. of course), Enoghos died in the battle, if by orcish hands or his brother's remains unclear in goblinoid oral myth tradition (as epic NPC's he and the other 2 tribe leads do not die from age) and his soul went straigh into the abyss where he became a Demon Lord, while his brother within time ascended to godhood, the anonimal now lost to history female ork lycan scaped from the war far away cause she couldn't see the twins she loved fight over her, no one knew what happened after the strife.. although it is said as a Gnoll legend she both walks from Hell and "Heaven" (whatever vertion of heaven there is to Gnoll imaginary, whicever is their God, Gorlliks's plain, and this lost female leader somelike they're "Mother Mary" to Gnoll collective subconsious) since she loved both in their own capabilityes an personallities she could never choose, thus she breeds with both Enoghos in the Abyss and with Gorllik.. and from both unions were birth in fiendish hyenas (that are indeed the souls of mortal CE gnolls that died and were faithfull to Gorllik or consagred their lives straight to Enoghos, thus althroug all CE Enoghos is like the Devil to gnoll religion and these fiendish hyenas are kindda their "suplicants") When eating the corpses the Demon or the God leaves behind (after gaining a few experience Hit Dice from aiding Enoghos or his sibling when summoned to his fights, in mechanical game terms..) they become the Tanar'ri Leucratta (whitch should have an antropomorphic shape mode as well). Thus Gnolls were born from shaman ork that took the lycan template and their descendants evolved in an independant lyco-goblin race and although as real hyena animals they revere they follow a matriarchal structure, they see these male Gnoll Twins as their "alpha male within matriarchal society as much as possible.. sort of like BETA from The Walking Dead series". A cool new twist orcish branch..
