This has been brought up a lot in the comments, so I’m adding this Addendum regarding Reel In. In short: Don’t use it Reel In damages the fish’s health while damaging your line. Don’t use it at all. Instead, treat the mini game like a fighting game as I described in the video. That’s the main reason why I never covered the command: it’s practically useless.
I though so too. My issue is that despite hitting every prompt, all but one boss fish makes me run out of line anyway. And you don’t get a new Rod until you gaucho them all. But the rods i have arena strong enough. So i hit every prompt and it still gets away. Is there something i have missed to make the line hold better???
So I beat the entire game and did all the sub quest and got almost all the trophies for it but I couldn't stand fishing in this game. All it took was this video and in a few hours I caught every type of fish and platinumed a tales game for the first time. Thank you for this video! Once you know the mechanics (looking back on it, I don't know why it wasn't clicking for me when it's so simple lol) fishing is pretty fun!
The game does not tell you about this but there's a button to Reel In. This will damage both you and the fish, you can use it while doing the stick left or right prompt and it will damage the fish more but leave you in the same spot on your HP bar.
Just wanted to say out of every video I watched this one comment helped me more than all of them I watched. I was wondering why you needed to even have a reel button if it really did nothing LOL. Thank you.
This comment literally saved me from never fishing. I’m constantly pressing the X button once the game put me into fishing for the first time and wondering why the hell I kept failing.
...I saw the two buttons next to each fish, but I never made the connection. I thought it was pure luck, and combos of soft and hard shaking that decided the fish you caught. Thanks, mate (Y), now I can finish my collection. Sub earned.
The first 10 fish were hard to catch with the crappy pole, novice pole gives you at least 3x as much leeway and makes the next 10 fish super easy. The last 24 fish with the sniper pole are incredibly easy. So just keep trying, it gets easier as you go on.
This was helpful. I'm damn near end game and barely even invested in fishing at all. Now that I have a better understanding I'll be investing more time into it thanks
I feel so stupid! I changed my lure, but didn’t think of changing my rod… I struggled so much with this that I gave up my dream of the Platinum trophy. All my fish got away… But then I changed my rod to the one from Kisaras Solo battle, and I got all the fish with no problem at all! I held down the reel in button constantly, and pressed the correct buttons and didn’t loose a fish again! (Well, I pressed the wrong button on one of the Boss Fish, so I had to try again, but only once). And I got my Platinum trophy 😁!
Thank you very much for clarifying the instructions for fishing in the exquisitely beautiful world of ToA. I've been floundering during each awkward attempt to catch anything. Kept getting messed up on irrational fish movement. I thought the button that popped up was random- you took the frustration out of L1..R1..R2 mistakes whew !! Thank you 😊
Just unlocked fishing, and this was a SUPER helpful video! Without this, I don't know that I ever would've understood how to use the buttons to choose which fish you're trying to catch. Really unique mechanic that I've not seen before. Wild how the dev team came up with something new for a fishing minigame when it seems every game is doing fishing minigames nowadays lol
@@BacklogBattle Yeah lol I never even noticed it for the longest time! It mostly does chip damage, but it really adds up and is still definitely a big help, especially for speeding things along when you're doing well with the button prompts and have plenty of slack in the line.
You don't have to cast when the marker turns yellow if you're farming a particular type of fish (probably the Pirarucu family as they sell for the most) with the correct lure. You will always hook one no matter what.
I managed to catch all fish up to the talka pond on my own, but I'm here just because I love the game and this content, haha. Edit: one thing I noticed, but it might be just an inaccurate observation, it's that a higher rarity lure and rod also affect how fast your tension bar rises.
Nice! You could also mention that you gat a 3 star rod for beating 60lvl challange in traning grounds with Kisara (you won't be able to beat it at low level thought)
Okay, I was very frustrated by this minigame at first and I'm here to provide motivation for others who might feel the same. At first, almost every single fish I hooked would get away because, seemingly, the fish had more stamina than the game gave me. I would hit all the QTE's and everything, but it seemed like the fish were just too good. Here's the thing... At first they are. Or maybe they're not too good, but your gear is just abysmally bad. This kind of tip might be frustrating to hear, but just keep fishing. Follow the extremely useful and enlightening advice in this video and once you get the Novice Tackle (pole) after catching 10 individual species of fish, things start to get WAY better. It's wild how much of a difference a minor improvement in your pole can make. At first this minigame really frustrated me but now I'm psyched every time I find a new lure or fishing spot. Fishing has actually become one of my favorite things to do in ToA lol. It's fun once you understand it, and it can net you _multiple tens of thousands of gald_ relatively fast. Definitely much faster than farming resources, that's for sure. Also, NEVER "reel in" when you have a fish hooked. Just run the fishes stamina down by hitting the QTE's.
One thing you don't mention is when to reel in (X button on Playstation). When the double arrows are flashing left or right there is a small window while fish is fighting you that you may reel in and relieve tension at a faster rate on your line. Window lasts as long as the arrows are flashing. Using the reel in mechanic at any other time seems to only add tension faster and potentially break your line.
Many others in the comments have asked and said the same thing, so I’ll share what I told them: it’s mostly useless. I’ve never once had to use reel in, even when capturing tough boss fish. Treating fishing more like a fight than an actual fishing game is more helpful than trying to use Reel In, hence, why I didn’t include it on purpose
@@BacklogBattle I agree. Once you understand the mechanics, reeling in is fairly unnecessary. Just noticed that it went unexplained and wasn't sure if it was intentional or not. It could help a beginner if their struggling with line breaks maybe get that edge. Thanks for the response and great video!
This was so helpful and simple thank you! The game doesn’t do a good job at explaining it and now I’m grasping it thanks again! The big fish with 2 health bars are very difficult is there a tip for those ones? I think I need to keep collection better rods and bait I’m assuming that’s key!
very VERY help helpful, im in love with this game but i keep running out of money so i need to fish but the game was doing such a poor job of explaining it to me. thank you so much!
I don't understand it tho.. My "health bar" is going to red so quickly, even though I'm doing everything correctly, it's just annoying because I've tried some fish for like 20 times, caught only one in the end...
Have you tried to go down the list of fish as opposed to catching specific ones? There are some that are easier to get than others. I don't quite understand what's going on though. I've managed to use the same basic lure and rod until much later in the game and while I've encountered some issues, I can't say I encountered what you've experienced. All I can suggest is follow the prompts. Any single addition to it - like continuing to hold down the Left Analog Stick in the same direction when there are no direction prompts - will count against you. Also, don't press X. That's a useless button.
@@BacklogBattle I've been trying to fish at each pond once I got there, caught 2 or 3 in total, but tried like 50 times, cuz I lost so much "health" every time I have no prompts, when it doesn't say what I need to press, I loose so much that in seconds it's red... Idk, it's just really not fun imo. But hey, maybe I'm just way to used to how it felt in the Zelda games idk
I have a question. What does it mean, when you hook a fish (and before you start feeling it in), then in the middle of the screen, you'll randomly see Kisara's eyes flash on the screen? Great video by the way!!!
All of those years of playing rune factory with their fishing mechanics as well as recently with Genshin impact's fishing is going to pay off! The fishing really doesn't look that bad in this game especially since you don't have to worry about what usually happens and that is you have to sit and wait and hope to God that a fish you want is gonna pop up whereas here you just have to remember a button combination in order to get the fish that you want. You still have to fight for the fish but it's not as OK this is gonna be annoying. Also Kisara looks very wholesome in normal wear, like a loving wife so thanks for the fishing tip and I just noticed that Biefu lure, meaning we better get the legendary Kobayashi rod that was mentioned in previous games lol. Seriously great job!
Could you make videos more in depth on each character’s combat? I can play Alphen fine now but everyone else is really weird. Law is super slow and his attacks have almost no range so I feel like I can’t do anything. I don’t understand how Shionne or Rinwell work really. I haven’t unlocked the other 2 characters yet. I am also having a lot of trouble deciding which artes to use. On Alphen only some of them allow you to hold down the button to do more damage since I tried switching my starting arte Swallow Blade out for something else and I couldn’t use Flame Edge with the new one at all.
There are more blazing sword moves you can unlock as skills, but I've only found one more and I'm at the fourth lord. There is a fire proficiency counter in the status info screen so I assume you can unlock some moves that way as well .
I haven't used Shionne a whole lot, but one thing I can say is that for her attacks where she chucks out a bomb, you can hold the button for extra damage, at cost to using her special ammo. You can reload her special ammo by holding L2 and pressing R1 I believe, and while it starts at 2 rounds, you can upgrade it to hold more at once through her skills. Rinwell took a long while to get used to, but she's one of my favorites now. For the artes that take time to cast, you can hold down the button they're set on if you want to delay it. Or while you're holding the button down, press R1 and Rinwell will stock the move for one attack, after which she will automatically use it. After stocking a spell, you can use the spell again to instead unleash a stronger move of the same element. When you see an enemy's circle meter indicating that they're charging a spell to cast, you can use Rinwell's boost attack to interrupt the enemy's spellcasting, and then she'll automatically throw that spell back at the enemy after a short amount of time. I hope that wasn't too confusing!
Finished campaign today, now I see i have to catch some fish so I can get the platinum trophy 😒, hate this kind of thing lol, question: to get better rods I need to go the pond or is any good one hidden in some chest?
Reeling in is bad. Just make sure you anticipate the left and rights. When it jumps jerk left to right or right to left and press the button the fish usually goes left or right after that.
It damages the fish, but also damages you. You can use it while doing the left or right stick and it will damage the fish more, but will leave you in the same spot on your bar instead of going up.
@@BacklogBattle Oh I see, I personally hate grinding for currency in JRPGs so I don't mind using the DLC to get more gald. But I only use this in the endgame to not make the games difficulty trivial.
Honestly, I didn't really grind for currency at all. Most of the money I got is either through occasional fishing or side questing. I don't know if you noticed, but this is a game that doesn't have a million side quests. And even in the late game, there's certainly not a lot you'd have to deal with. At the end of the game, I had about 400k and that's just through side questing and occasional fishing and selling to vendors!
I don’t use X at all. Pressing or holding the X button actually makes the line unstable and break easily. Go over the tips here for battle and forget using the Reel In button!
Fishing Expert gives you rods when you catch different kinds of fish. Lures can be obtained through side quests. I’m not sure if there are lures that you can buy from shops.
there is 1 lure i bought from a shop the next town after u meet fishing master. i dont know if u can get it via subquest but i just bought it as its 300 gald
I don't understand no matter what order I push the buttons in I'm only catching bass. I'm even trying the ones that don't even use the button that allures bass.
I guess the step I was missing was I hadn't asked someone for help. Doing the exact same thing I've been doing and it's working correctly now. Who knows
There are a few recipes that use the fish, yes! Otherwise you can sell the fish for money. IIRC if you sell the fish, you still keep the ingredient. For example if you catch a Golden Catfish, you can sell the fish but the actual ingredient is called Boss Fish, which is separate. Strange, I know!
@@BacklogBattle I tested this for a while last night, and it actually does increase the chances that you'll lose the fish...doesn't seem to offer any benefit though
I have no idea why i'm having so many issues fishing now. I already completed the fish list years ago, and it wasn't this difficult before ha. Since the DLC came out long after i moved on from this game after platinum the first time through, i had other games in my queue to play. But now that it's kind of on sale, i was considering it.,But i just played through ng+ doing everything i can, but can't catch shit for fish.
Nothing except make you fail. That’s why I didn’t explain it. Use the other things I talked about. To be more specific, it depletes the fish’s life while depleting the strength of your fishing line. Not worth using at all.
I don't know how you do it but I've only caught 20 fish so far and it's taking me forever and I finished the game the one time and press continue and I still am having trouble catching these fish 20 different fish I should say
Yes ,I have 4 fishing rods one I got in the trading ground but I'm still having trouble catching fish they get away when I there is a little bit of red
@@BacklogBattle Actually nah. I just ACTUALLY tried it and got 31 different fishes already. Fishing is the only content left before NG+. It's just I'm lazy to find the bait and going back and fort
I never knew what those buttons in the bottom right corner was because the game had to do it is so bad at giving you examples. I was just mashing random buttons and saw the fish came didn't know that's what those meant

@@Road_to_Dawn yeah that was really helpful thanks. I just need to figure out which artes to use for them.
@@quickpawmaud the game does tell you this btw
Thanks for this, I was mashing A to reel in -_-'
Finished campaign today, now I see i have to catch some fish so I can get the platinum trophy 😒, hate this kind of thing lol, question: to get better rods I need to go the pond or is any good one hidden in some chest?
Pond!
What fish sell the most and are a relative “easy” and quick catch?
Any and all of them!
Reeling in is bad. Just make sure you anticipate the left and rights. When it jumps jerk left to right or right to left and press the button the fish usually goes left or right after that.
Also once you get the strong fishing rod forgot what its called , fishing becomes very trivialized.
Even the bosses get chunked per input.
What does x (reel in) do when battling a fish? I don't feel like it does anything..
It doesn’t do anything
i noticed by pressing X u lose a little line strength for a small amount of damage. Its not that worth imo
It damages the fish, but also damages you. You can use it while doing the left or right stick and it will damage the fish more, but will leave you in the same spot on your bar instead of going up.
so do none of the rods affect how fast fish get away? i keep losing fish because the bar goes red before i even get to certain prompts.
Everyone seems to have this happen but it never did with me! Are you pressing the Reel In button? If you are, don’t!
Lmao wtf are those shades on alphen, I want them 😂😂
You da 🐐!! Thanks 🤣
Ngl this is easier for me to do since its mostly similar to FF XV's fishing..and i fished a lot there
I keep losing fish my tension bar is NEVER in the green. How do you get it so low
Don’t use the Reel In button
Very helpful thank you
Nice tips
Thanks!
0:40 why do you need a shield when fishing? >:-D THANKS caught my 1st fish. Hopefully 1 of many
Once a fish is hooked, do you hold the reel in button, or do you mash it?
You don’t press it at all. You just follow the commands I indicated in the video
Really? Seems counterintuitive, I assumed you skipped it because it would be ridiculously obvious that you would want to reel the fish in.
@@BacklogBattle Finally tried it and got it working, thank you very much. I was struggling hard on that tutorial.
Would you consider a skill artes 101? The skill tree etc is quite intimidating to me
Skills 101 would probably be my last video on the game
@@BacklogBattle nice! excited to see it!
Thanks!
Question: are all the DLC costumes only available with the Digital Collector’s Edition? (bc I was thinking of buying a physical copy)
Currently yes. 🙁
@@BacklogBattle actully i have a physical copy and there is a good amount of outfits to buy on the microsoft store
What are the rewards of fishing besides the costume?
Actually you don’t get the costume from fishing! Fishing is the most lucrative way to make money in the game.
Very helpful
OK so reeling in I didn't hear ypu explain do you hold X or tap it?
I don’t use X at all. Pressing or holding the X button actually makes the line unstable and break easily. Go over the tips here for battle and forget using the Reel In button!
@BacklogBattle thank you for that I'm just coming off replaying breath of fire 3 and 4 and so used to those fishing mechanics
Golden catfish? How?
Which lure?
How do I stop my line from snapping once it's already in the red zone O.O
My best advice is never use Reel In. Ever.
Honestly, I never got into fishing cuz the tutorial was basically like "want the controls? Look it up lmao" but now I need to for titles
Hopefully this video helped!
Where to buy fishing rods and lore?
Fishing Expert gives you rods when you catch different kinds of fish. Lures can be obtained through side quests. I’m not sure if there are lures that you can buy from shops.
Thx and thx for your hastily response 👍
there is 1 lure i bought from a shop the next town after u meet fishing master. i dont know if u can get it via subquest but i just bought it as its 300 gald
@@Kiiisssen thank you for helping clarify!
@@BacklogBattle im not sure if there are more as thats as far i am into the game but i love checking out stuff like this
How do I press the buttons for specific fish? Like I press both of them at the same time?
Alternately. One shrinking ring = one button
I don't understand no matter what order I push the buttons in I'm only catching bass. I'm even trying the ones that don't even use the button that allures bass.
I guess the step I was missing was I hadn't asked someone for help. Doing the exact same thing I've been doing and it's working correctly now. Who knows
Not even going to lie I've had easier boss battles than this. The game didn't even tell you what to do when the bar sows up to reel it in.
And some buttons are just set up to make you fail! Don’t fall for that reel in button lol
Do you get anything from fishing? Other than money?
Do you need to fish in order to get some recipes?
Help plz, thx ^^
There are a few recipes that use the fish, yes! Otherwise you can sell the fish for money. IIRC if you sell the fish, you still keep the ingredient. For example if you catch a Golden Catfish, you can sell the fish but the actual ingredient is called Boss Fish, which is separate. Strange, I know!
@@BacklogBattle mind putting those recipes here?
Sorry if it's too much to ask.
Thx.
@@BacklogBattle so when i sell all commodity items does it also sell all fish i could use to cook or only the ones that i can sell for gald?
@@phil_zupra_b5880 only ones you sell for gald!
@@BacklogBattle great thank you
What does X do while battling the fish?
Nothing. Don’t ever use it
@@BacklogBattle I tested this for a while last night, and it actually does increase the chances that you'll lose the fish...doesn't seem to offer any benefit though
@@SorenPenrose allegedly it will damage the fish while damaging your line. Why do that if you can just do it safely by not using it? 😂
I am so dumb I never notice the buttons beside the fish names XD
I have no idea why i'm having so many issues fishing now. I already completed the fish list years ago, and it wasn't this difficult before ha. Since the DLC came out long after i moved on from this game after platinum the first time through, i had other games in my queue to play. But now that it's kind of on sale, i was considering it.,But i just played through ng+ doing everything i can, but can't catch shit for fish.
@@厶しりあらな check the pinned comment for more tips
What is reel in button do? U didn't explain that
Nothing except make you fail. That’s why I didn’t explain it. Use the other things I talked about.
To be more specific, it depletes the fish’s life while depleting the strength of your fishing line. Not worth using at all.
After the first minute of video i paused and checked that I am not at MTQcapture channel... >_>
Surely I don’t sound anything like her haha
At any point am I supposed to press "X" to reel in fish?
Never
I don't know how you do it but I've only caught 20 fish so far and it's taking me forever and I finished the game the one time and press continue and I still am having trouble catching these fish 20 different fish I should say
I think that’s the requirement to get the fishing rod upgrade right? Have you done that yet?
Yes ,I have 4 fishing rods one I got in the trading ground but I'm still having trouble catching fish they get away when I there is a little bit of red
I got the upgrade but the one from the trading ground is better
@@bulletproofangel and just to confirm, you’re not pressing the Reel In button while you’re doing all of this right?
yes
I notice the later I press the button the more damages it does to the fish. FYI
You need to earn the best rod from the fishing guy so you can catch the silver marlin
wait???????? what word was i supposed to remember?????? :) :)
🤐👍
Fuck fishing, rip my last 2 Kisara's skills
You can do it! If it’s not working out right now, revisit it later!
I only have a couple fish left but he won’t give me the lure to catch any what do I’d i
Holy crap. This made a world of difference. The game does not teach you very well
Worst mini fishing game ever lol but thanks to this video i'll try and give it a shot again as was too annoying when i first tried
Did the video help?
@@BacklogBattle actually it did got them all 👍🏼
@@challicedarkon awesome! I hoped you liked fishing a little bit more!
This is a great tutorial, but the mini-game itself is TERRIBLY designed. Mini-games are supposed to be fun distractons, and this is NOT THAT.
Apart from the fact that Reel In is more detrimental than it is helpful, I can’t see why it’s bad.
@@BacklogBattle Hey man no hate on you. I appreciate the content you make for the JRPG-loving community. I am just salty because I am VERY disappointed in Arise so far and they just added to that with the fishing mechanic. I was so excited for this game and am really struggling to get through it for a variety of reasons.
Anyway maybe the fishing process will grow on me...
