I love GK. The first tier X I researched. It's so much fun. But I play it only in Brawls and Ranked too.
I got mine fast too , she is great , and with secondary legendary mod and Lutjens is even batter , in Asymetric battles just gem to play :)
I think the German BB's (Gneisenau and up) deserve an accuracy buff when they're shooting at a target close by, say, 8 km's or so. That way, the risk you're taking in brawling is rewarded, and you're not condemned to a war of attrition which you will lose because you've now become a pinata.

@@j_Snow Not true ! , GK have 105k HP , Schlieffen 76k HP , Ohio have great guns and decent secondaries , but both have 2 guns in turret 8 vs 12 in GK , there is also Mecklenbourg with 16 guns in 4 turrets , but those are 305mm , I have all those ships and in my opinion GK is balanced and DON'T need buff.
@@AllAhabNoMoby Buddy , if you are bad at game , so yes you want EVERY ship to get buff , I have decent numbers , I play game since 2018 and from about 2019 I have stop bitching about game , as I am experienced player and EVERY ship is unique in some way , secondaries on German ships give about 30% dmg doni in game , i have legendaru mod and Lutjens who after 100 seconday hit give -15% to secondary reload , GK is ballanced , you need to get better at the game . o7
idk why WG dont rework some old ships. If everybody says that GK is bad on dispersion, turret angles, superstructure dmg. Maybe the ship needs a little rework and make some negatives less negatives or improve other things.

The reason they don't do it is because the community doesn't band together to ask for it. Everyone has this mentality of "they don't do anything". "There's no money in it". But we need to ask for these things. I made a reddit post about this. We should be on a forum or something. War thunder community makes them change shit all the time cuz those guys are super history buffs and are extremely passionate about the design accuracy. We need to do the same instead of just "eh why bother, it's just WeeGee"
I love the GK but it really could need some buffs. Not necessarily because it is generally bad but because it’s strength don’t play a huge role in the todays game. Best example is the turtle back armor schema.
When the Gk was introduced in the game, Montana and Yamato were the only other BBs and both could be reliably citadeled at 15km and below when broadside. At 10km or below, multiple citadels were almost certain. Today nearly every battleships has a waterline citadel, space armor, fake turtle backs and so on. Have a hard to hit citadel isn’t as special as it used to be which is bad when considering that the GK is less protected against pretty much any other source of damage.
Fun fact. Napoli has better hitting dpm on the secondaries without spool up time.
She was a beast in her heyday.

@@Skerra-kk6sm Normal DD's have 165,000 HP in their casemate. This is unique to destroyers and makes it so that their midsection can never be saturated. This means that all hits to the destroyer's midsection will always deal 33% of Alpha as damage, and they can never saturate to 16.5%, or fully saturate to 10% like French destroyers.
French Saturation reduces the midsection compartment from having 165,000 HP like normal destroyers down to a 'reasonable' number like 2,800 HP in Kléber's case. This means once Kléber takes 5,600 HP to its midsection, it partially saturates and all incoming damage is reduced by half to 16.5% and once the Kléber has less than 6,200 HP remaining it can become fully saturate and only take 10% of Alpha as damage.
@@daptrius4983 so perhaps it's a matter of reducing the superstructure HP on the kurfurst so that it reaches saturation faster.
What do you think the viability of splitting up the superstructure into more sections can you help reduce incoming superstructure damage?
@@Skerra-kk6sm Kurfürst has 6,700 HP in its superstructure which is about 50% more than its contemporaries like Montana which has 4,000. Kurfürst needs to take 13,400 damage to its superstructure before it saturates. Reducing the amount of HP in the superstructure would have two effects, the obvious is that the superstructure saturates faster, but also whenever you use a repair party you heal less superstructure damage, and you would need to take less damage before the superstructure is fully saturated again.
The biggest reason this won't help the ship much is the same reason its superstructure has so much health. Kurfürst superstructure is massive, and it is an easy target to hit. Even if the compartment only had 1,000 HP and saturated immediately, it would still get targeted because 16.5% damage is better than ricocheting off the hull. It is also important to note that Overpens don't deal damage to the compartment they hit, or to the ship's Hull, they only deal damage to the HP bar.
GK during those tier 10 brawls is a godsend with 105k health

Pommern at Tier IX is an abysmal ship in Randoms, having the same problems as GK, but with only 15 inch guns.
Pommern's not great, but I'd say the situation is overall still better than GK's in randoms.
Pommern is a tier lower (can see T7 BBs which it can overmatch), has torps, is a decent bit shorter (11% shorter), turns better (both turning radius and rudder shift), is a bit stealthier, is a bit faster, and has a bit more range.
The only time you can brawl and using the secondaries on the GK in randoms is where there's a Thunderstorm in the battle. It will limit everyone to 8km of visibility and that's where GK can shine at least but the situation is rare and you need luck to get it.
I think the GK is my favorite BB, especially in the asymmetric battles. I have good games in Schlieffin, too, but the bigger guns seem to get more overpens right when I need solid hits.

I got the GK long before it became a coal ship. Back in the day it was my favorite secondary BB. But then the Preussen and the Schliefen happened. Not to mention that I grinned out the Ohio. So I played the GK only once in a blue moon. So I traded it for the Minegumo. I have over 600,000 coal, so I can get it back anytime that I want.

im going with not listing to a random youtuber on this one.. the gk seems more than viable when i play it.. works great in brawls ranked etc... so mush so that 75% at least of all these game modes always has a GK in the match..strange how you dont see it that way
I build all KM BBs for survivability and range and have a ton of fun and success that way. secondary build BBs are a thing of the past imho

had some respectable runs in GK with the small guns lately. The AP DPM is nuts and lots of people underestimate the reload
I find smaller guns with legmod and a tank/primary build works really well, even in randoms. you just need to know when not to push
For me its pushing for reload on those german BBs. If i want accuracy with standart build i play other ships in the first place. With the 500k module being occupied for secondaries, i value the quantity of shots much more than the quality. Getting out as many salvos as possible worked really well for me on ships like FdG, Preussen and GK. You also catch much more guys on the turn or before they disappear behind an island. And 420s having no overmatch advantage over 406 guns is the final nail in the coffin for the former.
I've been playing my GK prem with the 420 and love playing it, Doing pretty good to ! I do like my Prussian and Montana and Conquer better. I have Napoli and love that shop ! Working towards my first steel ship.
Turtleback armor scheme is mostly efficient at CLOSE range. However, as it is designed, the game doesn't happen at close range... BB AP at long range goes above the turtleback and bypasses it completely (or if you are 45 degrees angles, the turtle back has a weakness not unlike Yamato, under the turrets. Even at close range, with that angle you can be sent to the bottom very quickly by Lyon's 340 mm guns...
I had some of my best and most fun games in the GK but I have to admit, early game is hell in that girl. CVs spot you from the other side of the map, hit you for 12k and the enemy team focuses on you. But if you live till late game you just murder other BBs if you stay angled and only use your 6 front guns (and get close). I personally run a hybrid build with secondary mod in the 3rd slot but main gun reload in the 6th. And no close combat skill but survivability or lower dectabililty, next to the standard secondary skills.
You can't enjoy this ship in randoms. Ranked/brawls maybe you can make it work, but there are better options for that, too. And just like PQ says, you'll have a better time with Napoli, which crazily enough, in practice, appears to have better survivability. If you do play randoms with GK, the best way to have a good match, is just sit back and spam HE from 20km for the first half of the match and then push in when you find an opening, however this will aggravate your teammates (and may even get you reported), as everyone sees GK as a BB that should be pushing in, which you definitely should not do in randoms.

I truly believe the CareFirst got a sigma buff when it was turned into a premium. Turning broadside to a kurfurst at range used to never be an issue.

Gk is still my damagerecord ship at 312k, from just after the buff where all secondaries pen without ifhe. It may not be a good ship really, but man do I love it 😁

I actually like the full secondary gk. Is it the best build. Not really. Are the secondaries lacking. Ya. But I also have heavy ap. It’s fun. But I’ve been really playing the Maine lately. That ship will probably be nerfed.
Whether it's "worth" it or not, in the end only matters so much.
What matters is that it's the OG. The truth. The Big Voter. it has a reputation. It has prestige. So I still want it.

GK needs the -10% main reload skill on it's secondary build. That will nuke a lot of ships. Compared to Hannover, it's surprisingly tanky

in current random games, boats like kurfurst and hannover really struggle with ocassional massive dmg epic games
I am suprised that PQ didnt mention one of his biggest issues he has with German BBs, that in 2024 everyone and their mother knows to just full send into German Superstructure for disgusting damage. German BBs just get literally chunked and Ray Charles could even hit their superstructure.

@@PotatoQuality IMO, correct me if im wrong, but I believe that the way to rework the game to promote brawling again would be to remove full pen damage in superstructures. This game seems to reward mono ammo types too often. If you are versing an angled target, knowing your ammo is going to bounce, most of the time you can change that outcome by rolling HE into Superstructure. This kind of rework could give an avenue to reduce the amount of overmatching mechanics as well. It would also promote and reward the forward thinking people who can predict a turn out and plan that with a nasty AP to broadside.
Other than the rear gun arcs I have zero issues playing a full secondary GK absolutely NONE soon yeah
The bigger guns do 400dmg more that the others. But 3s longer reload. So imho its not worth it to get the bigger ones.

There is a special commander with an improved vigilance wich also improves the torpedo spotting range from hydro. so i thought i pick the biggest hydro in the game add vigilance and have the special commander... result is a 5.4 km torpedo detection! sounds great and fun, right? i allready had the GK and so its free to assign that 21 point captain. worst spend free/commander Xp ever to respec him. the maneuverbility kills that gimmick completly. its even a tankbuild and nothing exotic... GK is still just bad. guns lack the power because of the dispersion, you eat more damage in it than in other BBs, you handle like a sack of potatos and your gunangles are just a bad joke.
I always thought this ship was over balanced. Between the design and the numbers, there's just no escaping the bottom 1/3 of the T10 BB pecking order.
I actually prefer Kurfurst over Schlieffen, becase full secondary build also have more potent main guns. Also the bow is very strong, so againt lower health opponents you can just bow tank to finish them off. In minor angle the bow just bounces everything off. Secondaries+main guns from close range is very strong. With Kurfurst it's important to stay in longer range in the beginning and close in later game, so that you can bow tank them off. You also HAVE TO take auxiliary armaments, which prevents your secondaries to break. When watching this video. I notice most of your secondaries are broken and it becomes useless. You must have it, if you build secondaries. This video with broken secondaries do not demonstrate real power of secondaries, if you play with only fraction of your potential.

The most disappointing thing about the GK is simply that the lackluster ones wipe the floor when it comes to secondary's, the turret angles are horrible and the huge ship is just 0 tanky.

Schlieffen is insane if you are using Lutgens as the commander on how much damage those secondaries can dish out.
When I was still playing anytime I saw a GK wallowing around I immediately targeted it for easy damage. HE spam is obviously a killer but it's superstructure is impossible to miss regardless, so she's going to be hurt very easily. Add in her terrible concealment and other then ranked she really doesn't have a place in the game anymore, which really is a shame.
gk got 1 big flaw in the bow in front of the first turret if they hit you on that plate before the turret they can bow cit you and certain a experienced yammi knows that...and believe me bow cit hit can take 32K hp of a gk in 2 shell hits
Personally, I think Grosser Kurfurst needs tweaks to differentiate from Schlieffen, it should have dual purposed 150mm secondaries with Defensive Anti-Air Fire.

Ground GK when it was a tech tree ship, it was fun, not sure it's worth it now, that said it's still fun and if you play to its stregths and avoid its weakensses as best you can you can make it work, particularly in some game modes. Have to say I don't really enjoy randoms in any game mode now...
GK is not meant to play in randoms with the current meta. GK shines in Brawls and Asymmetric battles and if played properly in Ranked.
I genuinely feel like Wows needs a major armor overhaul, all these german ships with their "incredible armor" and their supposed purpose of brawling with that armor always just leads to eating 100% full pens from anything and just dying way faster than a ship with lower armor values. Maneuverability and the size of these ships should really be their weakness, you really have to commit to what youre doing and that alone is a massive weakness, but the armor should allow you to do that.
I also believe that random battles should be capped at 9v9 at max, not 12v12, thats just a complete mess and only leads to not fun games 90% of the time.
I love seeing gk’s on the enemy team; it’s just an insane amount of free damage for me, regardless of ship. Bb’s will get full pens at any angle into the superstructure, he will burn this thing to the ground in no time…
I hope they make Preussen a premium ship so no retraining cost and cheaper maintenance cost... maybe then I will reinstall back
I too use the bigger guns. They are more capable in my opinion. When I picked it up the youtube folks said use the smaller gun for reload. My experience is less reliable for damage vs faster reload. And yes I built for secondaries. Unlike the Schlieffen it has the armor to get closer like you don't dare in a battle curser. When close in I use the front guns only and protect my side. Its pretty good on the trops as well. That being said. I only take it out now and again. Its a little out of date.
If you're brawling bow on, use the smaller guns. You'll be bow to bow a lot and the extra calibre doesn't give you significant over match. The extra reload, on the other hand, let's your restart fires that got DC.

It's the same as the tech tree but with tiny touch different dispersion and range, is it not? About the most pointless premium out there, not bad - just... What's there to say about it? You get it in some random SC, play it once, shrug your shoulders and move on...

The basic problem is that whatever you want to do, some other battleship does it better.
The problem is that GK can only be good when playing defense, pushing with her is pretty much asking to get burned to death

GK has all the drawbacks of both Preußen and Montana with none of the advantages of either. Some people like it for some reason, but I can't stand how clumsy and inflexible it is, even in close quarters game modes. I'd rather bring Schlieffen or Ohio to those.
In a well made game would be a good, fun pushing battleship. Sadly another powercreep/camp meta victim. As soon as you compare it to like a Napoli you see how short changed it (and many other older ships) got.

German mainline BBs in a nutshell. Most strength turning into weaknesses as the game develops. Unless you want to spam ranked, don't play that line. It was my first line, don't make that mistake
And yeah 16:10 20.6km is laughable range these days. Some cruisers have higher range, like c'mon!
